The exploration of active ingredients and new activities of industrial crops could expand their scope of applications. Liriodendron chinense (L. chinense), an important ornamental and economic forest tree in China, has been widely used in timber, medicine and landscape. Flavonoids are major constituents of L. chinense leaves, while their effects of preventing brain damage are still unclear. In this study, flavonoids from L. chinense leaves (LCLF) were obtained through AB-8 resin chromatography and UPLC-MS/MS assay indicated that 16 compounds were identified from LCLF. LCLF treatment showed significant scavenging activities against DPPH•, ABTS•+, •OH, FRAP and total reducing power. D-galactose-impaired exploratory behaviors, cognitive functions and histopathological alterations in hippocampus of mice were obviously recovered by LCLF administration. Network pharmacology results demonstrated that LCLF could produce the healing efficacy through multiple pathways, mostly related to oxidative stress and inflammation. Further i n vivo experiments revealed that LCLF treatment could regulated MDA content, SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activity, as well as the production of inflammatory factors (NO, IL-1β and IL-6). The underlying mechanisms of LCLF were probably related to Nrf2/HO-1, NF-κB and AMPK/SIRT1 pathways. Molecular docking results and surface plasmon resonance analysis validated that especially hesperidin in LCLF had strong binding activities with all 8 genes in the mentioned pathways. Our study revealed the beneficial effects of LCLF on oxidative activity and D-galactose-induced brain injury, offering experimental support for its potential application in pharmaceutical and other industries. Background: Nurses play a core role and encompass the main workforce in health care systems. Their role model of health promoting lifestyle behaviors (HPLB) would directly or indirectly affect their clients' beliefs or attitudes of health promotion. There is limited evidence on HPLB in clinical registered nurses. The current study aimed to explore the HPLB and associated influencing factors among clinical registered nurses in China. Methods: A multi-center cross-sectional anonymous online survey was conducted in 2020. Participants were asked to complete social demographic information as well as the revised Chinese edition of Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP). Independent-Sample T-Test, One-Way ANOVA, and categorical regression (optimal scaling regression) were the main methods to analyze the relationship between demographic data and the score of HPLB. Results: 19,422 nurses were included in the study. The mean score of self-actualization, health responsibility/physical activity, nutrition, job safety, interpersonal support, and overall Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile were, 27.61(5.42) out of a score of 36, 22.71(7.77) out of a score of 44, 10.43(2.97) out of a score of 16, 22.05(3.97) out of a score of 28, 20.19(4.67) out of a score of 28, and 102.99 (19.93) out of a score of 144, respectively. There was a significant relationship among Hospital levels, working years, nightshift status, and monthly income per person, and mean score of all subscales and the overall HPLP (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Nurses who participated in the study presented a moderate level of health promoting lifestyle behaviors. Affordable housing has emerged as a key issue in urban development in a wide range of countries. Themes in research on affordable housing development across the world are reviewed. Affordable Housing Communities for low income households have been built on a large scale in developing countries such as China during the last two decades, mainly in urban fringe areas. Evidence on the impact of the location on access of residents to services is rare. Studying Nanjing, this paper compares spatial access to services between Affordable Housing Communities and Other Housing Communities by measuring distances and imputing walking time between residential land parcels and facilities. Affordable Housing Communities have significantly poorer access than Other Housing Communities, because of poor neighbourhood provision of low order services and poor access to high order services. A household survey of Affordable Housing Communities and Other Housing Communities records the daily lives, degrees of satisfaction and community attachments of residents. Residents in affordable housing have low degrees of satisfaction, weak community attachments and desire to move. The findings emphasize that service provision should be planned to keep pace with Affordable housing construction, so that these communities become better places to live. • Affordable Housing Communities (ACs) are found in Nanjing's periphery. • Access to services was measured as walking time from land parcels to facilities. • Residents in ACs have poor access to health care, schools and shopping malls. • AC residents were dissatisfied with the lack of access and wished to move. • Planners need to invest in making services accessible to AC residents. Unprecedented urbanization in China has directly resulted in residential vacancies, which has seriously stunted sustainable development, a part of China's new-type urbanization plan. Understanding the various types and mixes of residential vacancies is critical for the advancement of our knowledge of speculative urbanism and for devising vacancy-mitigation policies, but this issue remains insufficiently studied. Using municipal water consumption data, this study proposes a feasible and general-purpose framework for providing innovative insights into the variability in residential vacancies at the household level and the mixture of residential vacancies at the building level. This framework was applied to the city of Changshu, China, and four categories of vacant residences at the household level were identified: seasonally vacant residences, long-term vacant residences, newly built residences and occasionally vacant residences. The first category is closely related to tourism and seasonal industries, while the last three exhibit a Matthew effect. In addition to revealing significant and intensifying spatial clustering and three patterns of changes in vacancy mixtures (i.e., emergence, disappearance, and increases or decreases), the results identify particular types of vacant residences at the building level (e.g., extremely low-entropy long-term multihousehold buildings). Aims and objectives. To develop an explanatory framework to understand depression among community-dwelling Chinese older persons in Macau. Background. Depression has been described as the most common psychological problem among Chinese older persons. Dominant psychosocial theories are derived from research conducted mainly in western societies and similar research in Chinese populations is scant. Design. Mixed methods. Methods. Qualitative and quantitative methods (mixed methods) were employed to collect data from 31 participants between 2007-2009 in Macau. Results. Four categories of factors related to depression emerged: (1) negative thinking, (2) physical limitations and complaints, (3) present living conditions and social support and (4) past experiences. Each category interacts with the others and, consequently, one category both affects and is affected by others. The categories captured participants' life-long hardship and bio-psycho-social-cultural disability that lay at the root of their negative thinking. The consequences and impacts of their negative thinking appear to feed and sustain depression. Conclusion. The framework offers a deeper understanding of the nature and meaning of the experiences of depressed older persons in a Chinese context. Relevance to clinical practice. The findings have several implications for clinical practice. First, the cultural context of Chinese older persons should be emphasised in nursing practice. Second, the root of depression among Chinese older persons is seen to lie in their social, family, cultural and day to day living issues. Aim. To determine the prevalence of depression level of older men in Macau and identify factors that predict depression. Background. Studies have revealed the contribution of psychosocial factors such as stress, dissatisfaction at work and stressful life events to older men and the mental health burdens pose a grave threat to their quality of life. Design. A descriptive survey. Method. The study was conducted from July-August 2004 in six parishes in Macau; 839 older men aged 60+ completed a structured questionnaire. Outcome measures. Predisposing characteristics, social and daily activities, health history and need/behaviours and depression level were collected. Multiple logistic regression models were used to identify factors to predict older men who will have depression. Results. The prevalence rate of depression of older men was 8·6%. It showed that a history of stroke ( p = 0·039), insomnia ( p < 0·001), palpitations ( p = 0·014), poor social network ( p = 0·005) and self-perceived health status ( p = 0·001) and perceived low ability to meet living costs ( p < 0·001) were significant risk factors for depression. Conclusion. We should focus on older men by reducing their burden to meet living costs, improving their sleep quality and helping them to expand their social network. These should help in both prevention and recognition of the onset of depression. Those with the low social network scores could be targeted for more intensive support from the beginning. Relevance to clinical practice. It is important to screen regularly for depression status among older men in the community. Reducing water use and relieving negative environmental consequences contribute to regional water and ecological sustainability. This work examined water resource efficiency (WRE) and the effects of effective crop water use from the perspective of the water footprint. WRE was defined as the ratio of consumptive field water use (CWU) to the total crop water footprint (CWF), including the blue water footprint applied (BWFA), green water footprint (GWF), and grey water footprint (GYWF). WRE for the cultivation of the main crops (rice, wheat, maize, beans, and tubers) produced in China during the period of 1996–2015 was determined from estimates of provincial CWFs and CWUs. The results show that national CWF was estimated as 678.5 Gm³, of which GWF comprised 55.1%; the national crop CWU was approximately 455.6 Gm³ in the period considered, and this included 82.1% green and 17.9% blue water. The spatial patterns of CWF and CWU densities differed greatly but were stable over time, with increasing trends exhibited from 1996 to 2015. The national WRE for crops was 0.672, and that for beans was 0.869, an efficiency larger than that of any other crop. The indices for rice and wheat were approximately 0.630. WRE cannot be replaced by the global efficiency (GEF) or generalized efficiency (GE) indices, either for scientific evaluations or for considerations of spatial distributions. This study aids in the evaluation of effective water resource consumption by considering the process of agricultural water use, and also the impact of crop production on water quality and quantity. Hence, WRE is an advanced indicator linking measurements of water footprint with assessments of crop management and the sustainability of regional water resources. OBJECTIVE: Chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HBC) or both constitute the majority of cases of liver diseases in China. Pathologists often need to differentiate between the morphological features of HBV and HCV. The aim of this study was to explore the differences in inflammatory activity, fibrosis and morphological characteristics in various types of chronic viral hepatitis. METHODS: Inflammatory activity and degree of fibrosis in liver biopsies taken from 224 patients with chronic hepatitis were determined according to the Diagnostic Criteria of Chronic Hepatitis, China, 1995 . Each of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) and the hepatitis C virus nuclear core protein (CP10 ) were detected on paraffin sections of the biopsies by using immunohistochemical methods. Patients were divided into HBV, HCV and HBV + HCV infection groups and the differences among these groups were assessed on the basis of histopathological characteristics including inflammatory activity, fibrosis, steatosis, intrahepatic cholestasis, Councilman bodies and ground-glass hepatocytes. RESULTS: The HCV infection group had more severe inflammatory activity, fibrosis and intrahepatic cholestasis than did the HBV infection group. The degree of inflammatory activity and fibrosis in the HBV + HCV infection group was moderate, but the degree of intrahepatic cholestasis was the most severe of the three study groups. Ground-glass hepatocytes were only noted in HBV-infected specimens. There was no difference in the occurrences of steatosis and Councilman bodies among the three study groups. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of inflammatory activity and fibrosis induced by HCV in hepatocytes is more severe than that induced by HBV. While accumulating evidence shows that air pollution exposure is an important risk factor to influenza prevalence, their association has been inadequately investigated in mountainous regions with dense populations and high humidity. We aim to estimate the association and exposure-outcome effects between exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO 2) and influenza prevalence in a mountainous region with a dense population and high humidity. We investigated 14,993 patients with confirmed influenza cases from January 2013 to December 2017 in Chongqing, a mountainous city in southwest China. We developed distributed lag non-linear models with quasi-Poisson link to take into account the lag and non-linear effects of NO 2 exposure on influenza prevalence. We estimated that the cumulative effect of a 10 μg/m3 increase in NO 2 with seven-day lag (i.e., summing all the contributions up to seven days) corresponded to relative risk of 1.24 (95% CI: 1.17–1.31) in daily influenza prevalence. Comparing to annual mean of the World Health Organization air quality guidelines of 40 μg/m3 for NO 2 , we estimated that 14.01% (95% CI: 10.69–17.08%) of the influenza cases were attributable to excessive NO 2 exposure. Our results suggest that NO 2 exposure could worsen the risk of influenza infection in this mountainous city, filling the gap of relevant researches in densely populated and mountainous cities. With the unprecedented pace of urbanization in recent decades, urban vacant residences have increased dramatically. The problem of numerous vacant residences has been severely criticized. The lack of comprehensive data obstructs revealing the spatiotemporal dynamics and the contributing factors of the vacant residences at a fine scale. This study proposes a feasible and general-purpose framework to analyze the vacant residences using municipal water consumption data. First, a residential vacancy identification method is proposed to identify the vacant residences, and the spatiotemporal characteristics of the vacant residences are analyzed using the spatial analysis methods. Second, the relationships between the residential vacancies and the service environments of the neighborhoods are examined using the random forest method. The framework was applied in Changshu city, China, and the results revealed a concentric circular spatial structure for residences. The results also indicated that the diversity of the facilities and services (FASs) has the highest impact on residential vacancies. As the degree of enrichment of the FASs approximates 1 or the percentage/diversity of the FASs increase, the residential vacancy length decreases. Delivery drones are yet to be adopted as a systematic delivery system for humanitarian operations but have the potential to substantially increase the efficiency and effectiveness of future delivery options. Thus, we analyse the impact of factors affecting the adoption of delivery drones by logistics service providers for humanitarian operations. A conceptual model of potential barriers to adoption and development is created using the Technology Acceptance Model theory involving security, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and attitude as factors that affect the intention to use. We validate the model using empirical data collected from 103 respondents by the 10 leading logistics firms located in China between May and August 2016. through a survey to examine factors currently affecting the intention/non-intention to adopt delivery drones. The results show that ease of use and addressing key security considerations about the drone, the delivery package and the recipient are crucial for adopting the technology as a specialized delivery option for logistics service providers. This is the first study of its kind and contributes to understanding the operational, supply chain and behavioural factors in the adoption of drones by logistics services providers for humanitarian operations. Two new termite-pathogenic species, Ophiocordyceps globiperitheciata and O. longistipes, are described from Yunnan Province, China. Six-locus (ITS , nrSSU , nrLSU , tef-1α, rpb1 and rpb2) phylogenetic analyses in combination with morphological observations were employed to characterize these two species. Phylogenetically, O. globiperitheciata is most closely related to Hirsutella cryptosclerotium and O. communis, whereas O. longistipes shares a sister relationship with O. fusiformis. However, O. globiperitheciata differs from H. cryptosclerotium by parasitizing Blattodea and producing clavate, unbifurcated stromata. Ophiocordyceps globiperitheciata is distinguished from O. communis by multiple stromata, shorter asci and ascospores. Ophiocordyceps longistipes differs from O. fusiformis in producing larger stromata, perithecia, asci and ascospores, as well as smaller citriform or oval conidia. Morphological descriptions of the two new species and a dichotomous key to the 19 termite-pathogenic Ophiocordyceps species are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gender controversies and stigmatization on the internet occur from time to time. This research analyzes the "Yang Li Event" by crawling 10,507 posts on Weibo and sampling 184 reviews on the Zhihu website. Sentiment analysis verifies male-female netizens' attitudes are polarized and reveals that negative emotion is dominant on the Internet. Male netizens' posts use various rhetoric to construct the images of radical and pseudo-feminists, which is in turn placed in the contemporary China socio-cultural context for interpretation. Efficient agricultural water use is required for food safety and water alleviation on a global scale. Combining the water footprint and agricultural water use paradigms and enveloping water resource movement and its impact on the environment in the agricultural production process, a hybrid framework for agricultural water utilization and efficiency evaluation was constructed in the current paper. The indicators water resources use (WRU), efficiency (WRE) and productivity (WRP) are used in this framework for the total water exploitation, the effective utilization rate and the production capacity measurement, respectively. An empirical study on the framework was conducted with major cereals (wheat, maize and rice) in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (PAMs) of China. The national WRU, WRE and WRP values of integrated cereal were calculated to be 669.0 G m³, 0.633 and 0.679 kg/m³, respectively, from 1996 to 2015. The PAMs with high WRE values were located in southwestern, northeastern and northern China, while the ones with low values were clustered in northwestern and southeastern China. The spatial distribution pattern of WRP is consistent with precipitation. The water use efficiency (WRE and WRP) of the three specific crops in this framework increased over time. The WRE of maize was significantly higher than that of rice and wheat, while the WRP of wheat was the lowest. WRU measures the total water resource appropriation during crop growth in both quantity and quality; WRP was able to show where water use efficiency needs to be improved; and the function of WRE to indicate water saving potential could not be replaced by notable indices, such as irrigation efficiency or generalized efficiency. Climate change has resulted in an increase in drought severity in the species-rich tropical and subtropical forests of southern China. Exploring the spatiotemporal relationship between drought-tolerance trait and tree abundance provides a means to elucidate the impact of droughts on community assembly and dynamics. In this study, we measured the leaf turgor loss point (πtlp) for 399 tree species from three tropical forest plots and three subtropical forest plots. The plot area was 1 ha and tree abundance was calculated as total basal area per hectare according to the nearest community census data. The first aim of this study was to explore πtlp abundance relationships in the six plots across a range of precipitation seasonality. Additionally, three of the six plots (two tropical forests and one subtropical forest) had consecutive community censuses data (12–22 years) and the mortality ratios and abundance year slope of tree species were analyzed. The second aim was to examine whether πtlp is a predictor of tree mortality and abundance changes. Our results showed that tree species with lower (more negative) πtlp were more abundant in the tropical forests with relative high seasonality. However, πtlp was not related to tree abundance in the subtropical forests with low seasonality. Moreover, πtlp was not a good predictor of tree mortality and abundance changes in both humid and dry forests. Karst forests are habitats in which access to soil water can be challenging for plants. Therefore, safe and efficient xylem water transport and large internal water storage may benefit tree growth. In this study, we selected 22 tree species from a primary subtropical karst forest in southern China and measured their xylem anatomical traits, saturated water content (SWC), hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and embolism resistance (P 50). Additionally, we monitored growth of diameter at breast height (DBH) in 440 individual trees of various sizes over three consecutive years. Our objective was to analyze the relationships between xylem structure, hydraulic efficiency, safety, water storage and growth of karst tree species. The results showed significant differences in structure but not in hydraulic traits between deciduous and evergreen species. Larger vessel diameter, paratracheal parenchyma and higher SWC were correlated with higher Ks. Embolism resistance was not correlated with the studied anatomical traits, and no tradeoff with Ks was observed. In small trees (5–15 cm DBH), diameter growth rate (DGR) was independent of hydraulic traits. In large trees (>15 cm DBH), higher Ks and more negative P 50 accounted for higher DGR. From lower to greater embolism resistance, the size–growth relationship shifted from growth deceleration to acceleration with increasing tree size in eight of the 22 species. Our study highlights the vital contributions of xylem hydraulic efficiency and safety to growth rate and dynamics in karst tree species; therefore, we strongly recommend their integration into trait-based forest dynamic models. Jar burial is a particular burial practice generally used in the Neolithic period of China. However, the rarity of finding prenatal individuals limits the ability to study their treatment in jar burial contexts. In this paper, to study the postmortem treatment of this specific age further, we focus on three jar burials of infant individuals excavated in 2021 at the Gangshang site in China, where the skeletal remains were relatively well preserved. The skeletal remains of three well‐preserved individuals are presented into inverted ceramic tripods near the residential area and with a crouched posture. In terms of this condition, we apply the osteometric method to estimate the range and mean of age at death for each individual investigated. Meanwhile, we use micro‐computed tomography (CT) scans to help judge the degree of microbial bioerosion. Besides, histological analysis on skeletal remains combined with the Oxford Histological Index (OHI) assessment allows us to estimate the developmental stage at the time of death by analyzing the results of micro‐CT scans. By using osteometric methods, the results show that the gestational age of the three individuals is 22–26, 24–28, and 22–26 weeks, respectively. The results of the micro‐CT scans indicate that all three fetuses died shortly after birth, or had died in their mother's uterus before birth, with the OHI score of 5. Moreover, we indeed observe infant skeleton remains with no bacterial bioerosion, indicating that it is effective using this method to judge the developmental stage at the time of death with a specific taphonomic environment in the Gangshang site of the Dawenkou culture period. Combined with the placement of the jars in which the three infants were buried, it is believed that this unique placement method was intentional and specific to the infant deaths. These results are instructive for exploring the postmortem treatment of dead infants by ancient residents of the Dawenkou culture period (4200 bc–2600 bc) in Shandong Province, China, and the significance and possible causes of the unique burial type. Many young women were believed to die due to pregnancy and childbirth in the past, yet few cases of pregnant female burials have been reported in bioarcheological literature. Therefore, this paper reports the burial of an adult female (H49‐1) and her infant (H49‐2), who were buried together in an early Western Zhou pit at the Sanbulijia site, Jiaodong Peninsula, Shandong Province, China. It is the first reported case of obstetric death in thePre‐Qin Period in Shandong Province. The mother–child relationship was proved by ancient DNA evidence and archeological context. The infant's remains were placed between the adult's lower legs. Skeletal histological evidence suggests that the infant died during or shortly after childbirth. Sacroiliac fusion of individual H49‐1 may have resulted in dystocia. Furthermore, a special postmortem burial ritual—pit burial, was carried out for both the infant and the mother. H49 is the first Zhou Dynasty pit burial (multiple burial) with an exact radiocarbon date in the Shandong Peninsula. Background: Talaromyces marneffei (T. marneffei) infection has been associated with adult-onset immunodeficiency due to anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies. We aimed to investigate the clinical features of non-HIV-infected patients with T. marneffei infection in southern China.Methods: Between January 2018 and September 2020, we enrolled patients with T. marneffei infection who were HIV-negative (group TM, n = 42), including anti-IFN-γ autoantibody-positive (group TMP, n = 22) and anti-IFN-γ autoantibody-negative (group TMN, n = 20) patients and healthy controls (group HC, n = 40). Anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies were detected by ELISA. Clinical characteristics and clinical laboratory parameters were recorded.Results: Compared with anti-IFN-γ autoantibody-negative patients with T. marneffei infection, anti-IFN-γ autoantibody-positive patients did not have underlying respiratory disease; more frequently exhibited dissemination of systemic infections with severe pleural effusion; had higher WBC counts, C-reactive protein levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and neutrophil and CD8+ T cell counts; had lower hemoglobin levels; and were more likely to have other intracellular pathogen infections. Most of these patients had poor outcomes despite standardized antimicrobial therapy.Conclusion: T. marneffei-infected patients with higher anti-IFN-γ autoantibody titers have more severe disease and complex clinical conditions. Background Hematogenous dissemination of Talaromyces marneffei can result in multiorgan involvement (skin, lung, and reticuloendothelial system involvement); however, few studies have reported intestinal T marneffei infections. We investigated clinical features, management, and patient outcomes concerning Talaromyces -related intestinal infections. Methods Patients with Talaromycosis between August 2012 and April 2019 at The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, China, were retrospectively analyzed. Patients presenting with intestinal Talaromycosis and endoscopy-confirmed diagnoses were investigated. We also undertook a systematic review of the relevant English and Chinese literature. Results Of 175 patients diagnosed with Talaromycosis , 33 presented with gastrointestinal symptoms, and 31 underwent stool cultures, 1 of which tested positive. Three patients had gastrointestinal symptoms and negative stool cultures, and endoscopic tissue biopsy confirmed a pathological diagnosis. A systematic review of 14 reports on human Talaromycosis identified an additional 16 patients. Fever, weight loss, and anemia were the most common symptoms, along with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Abdominal computed tomography showed intestinal wall edema and thickening and/or abdominal lymphadenopathy. Endoscopy showed erosion, hyperemia, edema, and multiple intestinal mucosal ulcers. Of the 19 patients, 16 received antifungal therapy, 14 of whom recovered and 2 died. Three patients received no therapy and died. Conclusions Gastrointestinal disseminated Talaromycosis is not rare and can affect the stomach, duodenum, and colon, and may involve the entire digestive tract. Colon is the most common site. Endoscopy is needed for patients presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms in T marneffei- infected endemic areas. Systemic application of effective antifungal therapy can improve the prognosis. • Camellia gymnogyna Chang tea plant, found in Guangxi Province contains three different purine alkaloids. • Theobromine synthase was from Camellia gymnogyna Chang, purified, and characterized. • 7-Methylxanthine was a favorable substrate for theobromine synthase. • Full length cloning, subcellular localization, and polygenetic tree analysis of the theobromine synthase gene. Camellia gymnogyna Chang (Cg C), a wild tea plant, was discovered on Dayao Mountain, China. However, research regarding this tea plant is limited. Our study found that Cg C contains theobromine, caffeine, and theacrine, among which theobromine content was the highest (14.37–39.72 mg/g). In addition, theobromine synthase (TS) was partially purified from Cg C leaves, up to 35.87-fold, with consecutive chromatography, and its molecular weight was found to be approximately 62 kDa. The optimum reaction time, pH, and temperature for theobromine synthase from 7-methylxanthine was found to be 6 h, 4, and 45 °C, respectively. TS expression at both mRNA and protein stages was higher in the first than in the fourth leaf (P < 0.05). Subcellular localization of TS indicated that it was localized in the nucleus. These results indicate that Cg C can be of scientific value and could lead to efficient utilization of this rare wild tea germplasm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: The objective was to determine whether serum uric acid concentrations were associated with metabolic syndrome in a population from Wuhan.Methods and Study Design: 5,628 subjects (2,838 men, 2,790 women) aged 18-80 years were recruited in Wuhan, China. Biochemical parameters of venous blood were measured by standard methods and metabolic syndrome was defined by Chinese Diabetes Society criteria. Association analysis was performed by logistic regression.Results: 8.2% of the included subjects were confirmed as having metabolic syndrome and 14.4% were confirmed as having hyperuricemia. After multivariable adjustment, logistic regression showed the odds ratios of metabolic syndrome for subjects in the highest quartile of serum uric acid concentration was 2.84 (95% CI: 2.09-3.86) compared with those in the lowest quartile and no gender difference was found. For each component of metabolic syndrome, subjects in the highest quartile of serum uric acid concentrations had increased multivariable odds ratios for high BMI (OR: 3.29, 95% CI: 2.71-3.98), for hypertension (OR: 3.54, 95% CI: 2.93-3.86), for dyslipidemia (OR: 2.49, 95% CI: 1.98-3.14), but not for hyperglycemia (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 0.87-1.67).Conclusions: Odd ratio of metabolic syndrome was significantly positively associated with serum uric acid concentration among the present sample of 5,628 subjects in Wuhan. Background and Objectives: The aim was to investigate the association between peripheral circulating white blood cell count (WBC) and the metabolic syndrome among populations in central China.Methods and Study Design: In the present study, 5,278 subjects (2,412 women, 2,866 men) aged 18-75 years were recruited through a health check program in Wuhan, China. Biochemical and haematological parameters were measured by standard methods and the metabolic syndrome diagnosed as defined by the Chinese Diabetes Society criteria for Chinese.Results: Both WBC counts and prevalence of metabolic syndrome were significantly higher in men than in women (p<0.01). Participants in the highest quartile of white blood cell count had significantly higher odds ratio of metabolic syndrome (3.79, 95% CI: 2.64, 5.44), compared with subjects in the lowest quartile. The trend remained significant after adjustment for confounding factors and in further subgroup-analyses.Conclusions: Metabolic syndrome prevalence was significantly and positively correlated with the total white blood cell count in this Chinese population. A combined study of zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating, trace elements and Hf isotope was carried out for gneissic granite from the Sanzhishu area in Jingning, SW Zhejiang Province. Nearly all the zircons separated from the granite exhibited oscillatory zoning and high Th/U ratios (>0.1). The REE profile showed a pronounced positive Ce anomaly, negative Eu anomaly and an enrichment of HREE, which are typical characteristics of magmatic zircon. Thirteen concordant or nearly concordant analytical data yielded a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 1860±13 Ma (MSWD=0.084), representing the formation age of the granite. The magmatic zircons had negative ϵHf(t) values of -15.6 to -10.0 and two-stage Hf model ages of 3.1 to 3.4 Ga, indicating that the granites were formed by reworking of ancient crust. The major- and trace-element data indicate that the gneissic granites are metaluminous high-K calc-alkaline rocks and exhibit the same geochemical characteristics as aluminous A-type granites, implying the emplacement of the granite in a post-orogenic extensional tectonic setting. We conclude that the Paleoproterozoic crustal reworking event in the Cathaysia Block of South China marked the transition from assembly to break-up of the Columbia supercontinent. Long-term surface NO 2 data are essential for retrospective policy evaluation and chronic human exposure assessment. In the absence of NO 2 observations for Mainland China before 2013, training a model with 2013–2018 data to make predictions for 2005–2012 (back-extrapolation) could cause substantial estimation bias due to concept drift. This study aims to correct the estimation bias in order to reconstruct the spatiotemporal distribution of daily surface NO 2 levels across China during 2005–2018. On the basis of ground- and satellite-based data, we proposed the robust back-extrapolation with a random forest (RBE-RF) to simulate the surface NO 2 through intermediate modeling of the scaling factors. For comparison purposes, we also employed a random forest (Base-RF), as a representative of the commonly used approach, to directly model the surface NO 2 levels. The validation against Taiwan's NO 2 observations during 2005–2012 showed that RBE-RF adequately corrected the substantial underestimation by Base-RF. The RMSE decreased from 10.1 to 8.2 µg/m3, 7.1 to 4.3 µg/m3, and 6.1 to 2.9 µg/m3 in predicting daily, monthly, and annual levels, respectively. For North China with the most severe pollution, the population-weighted NO 2 ([NO 2 ] pw) during 2005–2012 was estimated as 40.2 and 50.9 µg/m3 by Base-RF and RBE-RF, respectively, i.e., 21.0% difference. While both models predicted that the national annual [NO 2 ] pw increased during 2005–2011 and then decreased, the interannual trends were underestimated by >50.2% by Base-RF relative to RBE-RF. During 2005–2018, the nationwide population that lived in the areas with NO 2 > 40 µg/m3 were estimated as 259 and 460 million by Base-RF and RBE-RF, respectively. With RBE-RF, we corrected the estimation bias in back-extrapolation and obtained a full-coverage dataset of daily surface NO 2 across China during 2005–2018, which is valuable for environmental management and epidemiological research.
