Background: Given the serious consequences of depression and the lack of information about it during the crucially developmental period from the National College Entrance Exam (CEE, i.e., Chinese gaokao) to college, this study aimed to estimate the cumulative incidence, prevalence, age of onset, correlates, and service use of depressive disorders (DDs) among youth who passed the CEE and were enrolled at Hunan Normal University in China. Methods: A two-stage cross-sectional epidemiological survey of DDs was conducted from October to December, 2017 among 6,922 incoming college students (98.5% effective response, N = 6,818, 71.4% female, age range: 16–25 years, mean age = 18.6). Using a stratified sampling method based on the risk of depression, 926 participants (mean age = 18.5, 75.2% female) were selected and subsequently interviewed with the Kiddie–Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia–Present and lifetime version (K-SADS-PL). Results: The sex-adjusted 9-month (i.e., 3 months pre-CEE, 3 months after CEE, and 3 months post-matriculation) incidence of new-onset DDs was 2.3% (standard error [S.E.] 0.3%), and the sex-adjusted 1-month, 6-month and lifetime prevalence were 0.7 (S.E. 0.3%), 1.7 (S.E. 0.2%) and 7.5% (S.E. 1.3%), respectively. The median age of onset was 17 (interquartile range: 16–18) years. Critically, over one-third (36.5%, S.E. 0.6) of depressed youth had their new onset during the 9-month period. The risk factors for depression included having mothers with higher education, experiencing major life events, being female, and experiencing parental divorce or death. The adjusted lifetime treatment rate was 8.7%. Conclusion: The 9-month incidence of new-onset depression from gaokao to college among the youth sample in China is similar to the global annual incidence (3.0%), but the 1-month and lifetime prevalence are significantly lower than the global point (7.2%) and lifetime prevalence (19%). These findings suggest a high proportion of new-onset depression during the CEE to college among the sample youth in China. The risk of depression is associated with familial and stress correlates. Low treatment is a serious concern. Emphasis on early prevention and available treatment for adolescent and young adult depression is a critical need in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the operation of railway vehicles, the quality of bogies directly affects the operation quality and driving safety. Wheel set is one of the most important components in bogie, so the maintenance of wheel set is very important. For a long time, the detection of train wheel sets in China is still in the stage of manual measurement with backward technology and low efficiency. A new automatic detection method of wheel flange tread based on fuzzy neural network image processing technology is proposed in this paper. This method can accurately detect the defects of wheel flange tread. It collects the original image of the tested wheel set through the digital camera, inputs it into the computer, through certain calculation and processing, and compares it with the model established based on fuzzy neural network, so as to detect the defects of wheel flange and tread. First, the research status of wheel tread defect detection is summarized. Second, the basic principles of digital image technology are studied, the image processing models are confirmed, and the image processing method based on fuzzy neural network is established. Finally, eight wheel set treads are selected to carry out defect detection, and the analysis results show that the proposed method can obtain the better inspection precision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The adaptive evolution of visual systems has been observed in many cavefish. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations, which include regressive changes such as eye degeneration. Here, we analyzed phylogenetic and expression patterns of 6 eye‐related genes (crx, foxg1b, opn1sw2, otx2, rho and sox2) in 12 Sinocyclocheilus species from China, including 8 stygobionts and 4 stygophiles, and examined photoreceptor cell morphology of these species. Those eye‐degenerated species of Sinocyclocheilus were polyphyletic and showed different degrees of photoreceptor defects in responses to cave environments. The eye loss and degeneration are the result of convergent evolution. Although S. anophthalmus grouped with the eye‐normal species, it displayed not only a high degree of eye degeneration but also significant expression differences in eye‐related genes compared with the eye‐normal species. The gene foxg1b, which was determined to be under positive selection, might play an important role in the process of eye degeneration in S. anophthalmus based on differential expression. Eye‐related gene expression and selection may have contributed to the polyphyly of the cave species. We examined gene expression and duplication in 6 eye‐related genes and revealed that these genes displayed considerable diversity in relative expression in Sinocyclocheilus fishes. Otx2 and sox2 were significantly up‐regulated in individual cave species, while the other 4 genes (crx, foxg1b, opn1sw2 and rho) were significantly down‐regulated. The argument over the effects of financial structures on economic growth remains unsettled. This study, therefore, compares the dynamic correlation and lead–lag relationship between the different financial approaches within the banking sector (that is, traditional bank loans versus innovative financial leasing) and economic growth. We employ a continuous wavelet analysis using time-series data from 1982–2017 from the US (the world's largest developed country) and China (the world's largest developing country). The empirical results show that (1) episodes of significant correlation usually emerge during periods of reform, crisis or policy implementation; and (2) in China, traditional banking promotes economic growth in the long term, while the real economy only imputes the evolution of banks during critical economic reforms in the short term. Meanwhile, financial leasing could only promote the development of the real economy under suitable regulation; and (3) in the US, before the crises, the irrational growth of the real economy could increase bank assets, while during the crises, the traditional banking approach harms economic growth, and after the crises, financial leases play an important role in recovery. Aim To compile an inventory of freshwater fish species in China, and to investigate these data to determine spatial patterns in species richness, endemism and threatened species for the purpose of facilitating conservation. Location China Methods Literature, databases and fish collections were examined to create an inventory database of freshwater fishes of China. This list was analysed to determine species richness, endemism and threatened species. spss and origin software were used to determine relationships between these three parameters across the area and length of river basins. Coefficients of fish diversity for each major river were calculated using the Gleason Index. Results Chinese freshwater fish fauna is comprised of 1323 species; the majority of species belong to Cypriniformes and Cyprinidae. Of 877 species endemic to China, 161 of 199 threatened species are endemic, with most classified as 'endangered' (85 species) or 'vulnerable' (70). Species endemism and the number of threatened species correlate positively with species richness. River basin area and length have no direct bearing on either species richness or endemism. The Pearl River was identified as the most species-rich system. It also has the most endemic and threatened fish species. Main conclusions China's vast size, variable geography and climate influence patterns in species diversity and endemism. Its freshwater fish fauna is rich and largely endemic and a significant number of these endemic species are threatened. Dam construction, water pollution, overfishing and invasive species pose threats to native biodiversity. National assessment of threatened species is urgently needed. The Yangtze, Yellow and Pearl rivers require prioritized national protection. Environmental effects of development require serious consideration and, potentially, proactive conservation efforts and mitigation. Development on international rivers needs to consider environmental policies of all countries owning spans of the systems, particularly the wishes and concerns of nations with lower spans of a system. A new loach, Oreonectes elongatus sp. nov. is described based on collections from Mulun Township, Huanjiang County, Guangxi in China. It is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: most elongate body (body depth/SL 8.62-10.68%), blind, a forked caudal fin, obvious adipose dorsal crest and ventral crest; entire body naked and de-pigmented. Although the new species has a similar distribution with O. macrolepis, it can be distinguished by scales (absent in O. elongatus vs. present in O. macrolepis), shape of snout (elongate vs. round), the opposite position of the dorsal and pelvic fins origins (behind vs. front). The new species shares the same possession of dorsal and ventral crests, a forked caudal fin, eyeless, naked body and incomplete lateral line with O. translucens, but can be distinguished from the latter by caudal fin crest (more developed and translucent in O. translucens), longer anterior nostril tube and barbel, extreme of pectoral fin reaching 2/3 of the distance between origin of pectoral and pelvic fins, more vertebrae (4 + 38-39 vs. 4 + 32). Late Permian coal deposits are widely distributed throughout southwestern China. This paper describes the petrological composition of the last coal seam in the Longmendong section of the Emeishan area during the latest Changhsingian (Permian) and records important information regarding the evolution of the mass extinction event that occurred at the end of the Permian. The results show that the dominant coal maceral group is vitrinite, followed by liptinite and inertinite macerals, and the coal minerals include quartz, chamosite and pyrite. The pyrofusinite and carbon microparticles occurrence modes could have been formed during wildfires in the adjacent areas. The β-tridymite occurrence modes and the high proportions and occurrence modes of magmatic quartz indicate that synchronous felsic volcanic activity occurred during the peat mire accumulation period. The chamosite and quartz occurrence modes suggest that they primarily precipitated from Fe-Mg-rich siliceous solutions that was derived from the weathering of nearby Emeishan basalt. The pyritic coal balls occurrence modes in the C1 coal seam are likely the result of coal-forming plants and Fe-Mg-rich siliceous solutions in neutral to weak alkaline conditions during late syngenetic stages or early epigenetic stages within paleomires. Flood management is a complex issue in Chinese cities that exhibit high populations and have undergone rapid urbanization. Urban flood management (UFM) approaches can be used to mitigate urban flood risk. To address urban issues of poor water quality and urban surface flooding, the Sponge City Program (SCP) was initiated in 2013 in China. The SCP aims to provide an opportunity for Chinese cities to improve their current UFM practices. This study looks at Guiyang (a pilot sponge city located in SW China) as a case study to identify the challenges and opportunities of UFM in China. Guiyang is a valley city surrounded by a hilly landscape. Using interview records and flood data, we illustrate that the primary type of flood in Guiyang is fluvial rather than surface water flooding. In Guiyang, the current function and targets of the SCP have yet to engage with the catchment level flood management, instead mainly focusing on the site-specific context (i.e., community level). Catchment flood management planning (CFMP) and natural flood management (NFM) both address this problem and may be a more suitable approach to manage flood discharge from the upper and middle catchments in Guiyang. In addition, it is suggested that a mixed option combining "hard" infrastructure (e.g., reservoirs and floodwalls) with "soft" flood management measures (e.g., improving people awareness and participation) may improve urban flood resilience in Chinese cities. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has been counted on for conserving threatened marine fish since it regulates the commercial international trade of these species. Implementation of the international treaty for Mantas included on CITES Appendix II is challenging due to insufficient information on species identification and markets management. To fill the gap in such aspects, we identified five species of Mobulid rays (Mobula spps. and Manta spp) by using COI and NADH2 mtDNA markers in dried ray gill rakers from Chinese markets, namely, Mobula japonica (representing 54.8% of the sample set), M. tarapacana (14.4%), M. kuhlii (13.3%), M. thurstoni (6.4%), along with Manta birostris (11.2%; CITES Appendix II). The utilization and conservation statuses of these species were discussed. Based on combination of DNA barcodes and key morphological characters, we developed a three-step process for identifying the gill rakers of Mobulid rays which has been adopted by frontline enforcement in China. We hope that our work can serve as a foundation and basis to reinforce objectives of international treaties, regulation of consumer-driven markets, regional cooperation, and national fishery management on endangered elasmobranchs in China as well as related countries.

One new species is added to the genus Sinocyclocheilus, the largest cyprinid genus in China and the largest cavefish genus in the world. Sinocyclocheilus gracilicaudatus sp. nov. is similar to S. donglanensis but differs to other congeners in having normal eyes and scaled body, curved lateral line with 59-64 lateral-line scale rows, half-hard dorsal fin spine, 8 gill rakers and 8 predorsal vertebrae. Compared to S. donglanensis, the new species has a longer and more narrow caudal peduncle (caudal peduncle length 21.3-22.7% vs. 16.8-20.4% of SL; caudal peduncle depth 10.5-12.0% vs. 12.5-15.5% of SL), smaller eyes (eye diameter 5.8-8.3% vs. 6.5-10.9% of SL) and longer barbels (maxillary barbel length 16.6-24.3% vs. 11.1-21.1 % of SL; rictal barbel length 19.5-21.6% vs. 11.3-21.1% of SL). The new species is distributed in a subterranean river, belonging to the Longjiang River system; S. donglanensis occurs in the Hongshuihe River system, a system separate from that where the former species occurs.

The growth of four mangrove species seedlings, namely Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Kandelia obovata, Aegiceras corniculatum and Acanthus ilicifolius in sediments contaminated by spent lubricating oil, even at the lowest oil dose (2.5 L m(-2)), showed different degrees of sub-lethal damages. All the seedlings of K. obovata and A. corniculatum were killed at 10 L m(-2) oil, while the lethal oil dose was 15 L m(-2) for A. ilicifolius seedlings. B. gymnorrhiza was the most tolerant species to oil pollution, which could survive under the highest oil dose treatment (15 L m(-2)). Biochemical responses including superoxide radical (O(2)(-)) release, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malonyldialdehyde (MDA) content in both leaves and roots of the oil-treated seedlings were increased significantly with oil dose, and presented a positive relationship with leaf and root biomass., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. We have investigated the exocytotic characteristics of neutrophils from allergic patients and healthy volunteers employing the whole cell membrane capacitance (Cm) measurement. The mean serum IgE level from allergic patients (423.75 +/- 12.75 IU/ml) determined by chemiluminescence immunoassay was much higher than that of healthy volunteers (28.47 +/- 16.68 IU/ml). Intracellular dialysis of buffered Ca2+ and GTPgammaS triggered biphasic exocytosis. The total capacitance increment displayed a steep dependence on pipette free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]p), with maximal stimulation achieved at 10 microM. A significant decrease in the total capacitance increment was observed in the allergic group at [Ca2+]p >10 microM. Moreover, at submaximal stimulatory [Ca2+]p of 1 microM, the maximal rate of exocytosis in allergic patients (Vmax = 20.75 +/- 6.19 fF/s) was much faster than that of the healthy control group (Vmax = 7.97 +/- 2.49 fF/s). On the other hand, the Ca2+-independent exocytosis stimulated by GTPgammaS displayed no significant difference in either the total membrane capacitance increments or the maximal rate of exocytosis.
