6‐Benzyladenine (6‐BA, a synthetic cytokinin) could improve the ability to resist adversity. However, very little attention has been given to its role in alleviating waterlogging damages on grain growth. A field experiment was performed to investigate effects of exogenous 6‐BA after waterlogging for 6 days at the third leaf stage (V3‐WL + 6‐BA) or the sixth leaf stage (V6‐WL + 6‐BA) on grain filling, and endogenous hormone of summer maize hybrids DengHai605 (DH605) and ZhengDan958 (ZD958), which were planted popularly in China. Exogenous 6‐BA alleviated waterlogging damages on grain filling by improving grain weight and volume, which was beneficial to yield increase. Grain yield of DH605 under V3‐WL + 6‐BA and V6‐WL + 6‐BA increased by 16% and 12%, respectively, compared with that of V3‐WL (waterlogging at the third leaf stage) and V6‐WL (waterlogging at the sixth leaf stage), while the corresponding values for ZD958 increased by 20% and 15%, respectively. Moreover, exogenous 6‐BA alleviated waterlogging damages on grain endogenous hormone content by increasing levels of endogenous indole‐3‐acetic acid, zeatin riboside, and gibberellic acid, and decreasing level of abscisic acid in grain of waterlogged summer maize during grain‐filling periods. Global climate changes have led to frequent and recurrent heat stress, which has seriously affected the world maize production. The experiment presented in this paper was carried out during the maize‐growing season in 2021 and 2022 at the Huang–Huai–Hai Region Maize Science and Technology Innovation Center (36°09′N, 117°09′E) in Tai'an, Shandong province, China. The test site is located in the semi‐humid warm temperate continental monsoon climate zone, soil is brown loam. We selected different heat‐sensitive maize varieties: heat‐tolerant variety Zhengdan 958 (ZD958) and heat‐sensitive variety Xianyu335 (XY335) to study the stress effects of high temperature on the development of tassel in the key stage of its differentiation (the 12‐leaf stage, V12). We found that exposure to heat stress during the V12 stage significantly reduced the tassel size and the anther dehiscence area, making it difficult to disperse pollen, thus effectively reducing pollen production. In addition, heat stress had significant negative effects on pollen development, resulting in deformed pollen and lower pollen viability and germination rate. Our results also showed that heat stress significantly increased the activities of key reactive oxygen species‐scavenging enzymes including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase, and that the malondialdehyde and H2O2 content in tassels exposed to heat stress were significantly higher than those control group, where it should be noted that for the XY335, these effects were more pronounced than for the ZD958. The endogenous hormone content of tassels exhibited a variety of responses. After heat stress, the zeatin and salicylic acid content in tassels of both maize varieties were significantly lower than those in the respective control groups, while the abscisic acid and gibberellin acid content were significantly higher. With respect to the jasmonic acid and 3‐indoleacetic acid content, the two maize varieties exhibited opposite responses: in tassels from ZD958 plants subjected to heat stress were higher than those in the respective control group, while in tassels from XY335 plants, they were lower. The observed changes in protective enzyme activities and endogenous hormone contents induced by heat stress significantly affected the development of maize tassels and significantly reduced the amount, activity and germination rate of pollen. Cytokinin is known to be involved in the regulation of plant responses to counteract the adverse effects of stress conditions. This work investigated the effects of exogenous spraying of 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) after water logging for 6 days at the third leaf stage (V-3WL + BA) and the sixth leaf stage (V-6WL + BA) on grain yield and growth of summer maize hybrids DengHai605 (DH605) and ZhengDan958 (ZD958), which are planted most popularly in China. Waterlogging under field conditions delayed the growth process, decreased leaf area index, chlorophyll content and dry matter accumulation, resulted in a significant reduction of grain yield with a decrease of 30.30% and 18.78% under V-3WL (water logging for 6 days at the third leaf stage) and V-6WL (waterlogging for 6 days at the sixth leaf stage) of DH605, 30.39% and 21.38% under V-3WL and V-6WL of ZD958, respectively, compared to the control (CK). By contrast, exogenous application of 6-BA effectively alleviated the adverse effects of waterlogging on summer maize by delaying leaf senescence, increasing chlorophyll content and improving photosynthetic performance. At tasseling stage, the P n of V-3WL + BA and V-6WL + BA in DH605 increased by 9.57% and 8.38%, respectively, compared to that of V-3WL and V-6WL, while the corresponding values for ZD958 increased by 2.96% and 4.05%, respectively. Those responses are conducive to the accumulation of photosynthetic products, increasing grain filling rate, and improving ear character, and then leading to increase grain yield of summer maize. Grain yield of DH605 under V-3WL + BA and V-6WL + BA increased by 15.57% and 12.39%, respectively, compared to that of V-3WL and V-6WL, while the corresponding values for ZD958 increased by 20.05% and 15.32%, respectively. Clearly, spraying exogenous 6-BA could effectively improve grain-filling characteristics and photosynthesis of waterlogged summer maize, resulting in a significant increase of grain yield, compared to water logging treatments. Aims: To realize the so-called "Second Green Revolution", it is imperative to study the roots of crop plants, and identify those traits that improve the efficiency of nitrogen (N) acquisition. We aimed to evaluate how the N acquisition efficiency of six hybrid maize lines commonly grown in northern China depends on their root anatomy. Methods: Maize hybrids classified as having high nitrogen uptake efficiency (HNUE) and low nitrogen uptake efficiency (LNUE) were grown under high-N and low-N conditions in the greenhouse and the field. Results: Under N stress in the field and the greenhouse, HNUE increased shoot dry weight, root length density, N content and nitrogen use efficiency compared to LNUE. Low N availability increased the percentage of root cortical aerenchyma and the size of cortical cells. Root anatomy, with greater formation of root cortical aerenchyma and larger cortical cell size, was associated with increased specific nitrogen absorption efficiency (SNAE) and shoot biomass under N stress. Under low N availability, the percentage of aerenchyma and their total area had significant positive correlations with the shoot dry weight, total N uptake, SNAE. Conclusions: The results suggest that plants in limited N availability form more root cortical aerenchyma and have larger cortical cells, which is of benefit to root growth, soil exploration, N acquisition, and shoot biomass. These observations support the hypothesis that root anatomical phenotypes that affect the metabolic and construction costs of producing root length merit consideration as selection criteria for breeding to improve N acquisition in hybrid maize. Clarification of influencing factors (cultivar planted, cultivation management, climatic conditions) affecting yields of summer maize ( Zea mays L.) would provide valuable information for increasing yields further under variable climatic conditions. Here, we report actual maize yields in the Huanghuaihai region over the past 50 years (1957-2007), simulated yields of major varieties in different years (Baimaya in the 1950s, Zhengdan-2 in the 1970s, Yedan-13 in the 1990s, and Zhengdan-958 in the 2000s), and factors that influence yield. The results show that, although each variety change has played a critical role in increasing maize yields, the contribution of variety to yield increase has decreased steadily over the past 50 years (42.6%-44.3% from the 1950s to the 1970s, 34.4%-47.2% from the 1970s to the 1990s, and 21.0%-37.6% from the 1990s to the 2000s). The impact of climatic conditions on maize yield has exhibited an increasing trend (0.67%-22.5% from the 1950s to the 1970s, 2.6%-27.0% from the 1970s to the 1990s, and 9.1%-51.1% from the 1990s to the 2000s); however, interannual differences can be large, especially if there were large changes in temperature and rainfall. Among climatic factors, rainfall had a greater positive influence than light and temperature on yield increase. Cultivation measures could change the contribution rates of variety and climatic conditions. Overall, unless there is a major breakthrough in variety, improving cultivation measures will remain important for increasing future summer maize yields in the Huanghuaihai region. How to improve nitrogen (N) efficiency and reduce environmental pollution caused by N loss has attracted much attention. However, limited research has lacked a comprehensive exploration of the effects of applying UAN under the micro sprinkling fertigation on reactive N (Nr), fertilizer efficiency and net benefits including environmental costs, plus associated responses of the microbial metagenome. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of N management practices on maize yield, Nr losses, and soil microbial community composition and function. Urea and urea ammonium nitrate solution (UAN) were used as N sources, and three N application rates (210, 168 and 0 kg N ha−1) and two fertilization methods (micro sprinkling fertigation and traditional fertilization) were set as the three key components. The results showed that micro sprinkling fertigation treatments reduced Nr losses, increased yield and N efficiency. Compared with urea, the total NH 3 volatilization and N 2 O emissions of UAN under micro sprinkling fertigation were decreased by 14.8% and 30.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the N reduction (FU1) treatment promoted plant N uptake, was saved 20% of N by affecting soil NH 4 +- N and NO 3 --N content, compared to that of urea, and it regulated the microbial abundance of N cycle function related to denitrification and N respiration, reduced global warming potential and greenhouse gas emission intensity. N application method, N source and N rate affected the diversity and composition of soil bacterial community, and altered Nr emissions by changing the abundance of functional microorganisms related to N cycle. Overall, improved N management practice was more conducive to increasing maize yield and net income, saving N resources, and reducing the risk of environmental damage. Our results contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the impact of N management on summer maize production, providing an effective N management practice that is conducive to "green agricultural development". In the Huang-Huai-Hai region of China, continuous rain is the main meteorological constraint for summer maize, accompanied by stresses of both waterlogging and shading. To evaluate the independent and combined effects of shading and waterlogging on summer maize at different stages, a field experiment was performed to study the grain yield, crop growth, and canopy functionality of summer maize in response to waterlogging (W), shading (S), and their interaction for a 6 day period starting at the third leaf stage (V3), the sixth leaf stage (V6), and the tasseling stage (VT). Shading, waterlogging, and their combination stress (S+W) significantly decreased the grain yield of summer maize. Among these, the simultaneous stress induced greater yield losses than single stresses at any growth stage. The reduction of yield induced by waterlogging at early and late stages differed from 20–40 % to 3–16 %. Shading at VT stage induced most serious losses of grain yield. The grain yield of summer maize was closely related with the crop biomass accumulation. Shading, waterlogging, and their combination stress significantly decreased leaf area index resulting in serious reduction of the radiation interception. Besides, the leaf SPAD value and photosynthetic rate were also significantly reduced by the stresses, which led to notable reduction in radiation use efficiency (RUE) of summer maize. Thereby, the total accumulated crop biomass was decreased. Moreover, the biomass partitioning to ears was decreased. Accordingly, the 1000-kernel weight and kernels per ear were decreased by the stresses, leading to yield losses. This study explored the differential responses of radiation interception, canopy functionality, and RUE to waterlogging, shading, and their combined stress at different growth stage, furthering our understanding on the yield and growth for summer maize crops under persistent rainfall conditions. • The response of yield components to combined stress at different stage was differed. • Waterlogging at early stage reduced radiation interception and RUE decreasing yield. • Shading at VT lowered incident radiation, decreased kernel setting reducing the yield. • The combined effects of shading and waterlogging on grain yield was greater than single stress. Irrigation, fertilization, and cultivation managements play important roles in crop production in the North China Plain (NCP). This study aims to compare crop yields, and water and N use efficiencies (WUE and NUE) in a wheat–maize cropping system under different integrated management practices and recommend the best management practices (BMPs). A two-year experiment involving four integrated management practices was conducted in Tai’an City, Shandong Province in the NCP. These management practices were designed as follows: (1) traditional farming practice (FP); (2) optimized combination of cropping and fertilization (OPT-1); (3) practice for high yield (HY), which does not consider the cost of resource inputs to maximize grain yield; and (4) further optimized combination of cropping and fertilization (OPT-2), which is based on the HY practice. Soil water movement, nitrate transport, and crop growth were all simulated using the soil water, heat, carbon, and N simulation (WHCNS) model. Results indicated that simulated soil water content and nitrate concentration at different depths in soil profiles, leaf area index, dry matter weight, and grain yield were all in good agreement with the field-measured data. Simulation results indicated that the amounts and dates of irrigation and fertilization, planting method, planting density, and sowing date had obvious effects on grain yield, water drainage, total N loss, WUE, and NUE. The annual average total N loss under the OPT-1 practice decreased by about 28.6% compared with the FP practice, whereas the annual average grain yield and NUE increased by 27.7% and 25.7%, respectively. The largest annual average grain yield and total N loss occurred in the HY practice (23,590 kg ha −1 and 240.6 kg N ha −1 , respectively). Although the annual average grain yield of the OPT-2 practice was 15.4% lower than that of HY practice, the NUE was 19.2% higher in OPT-2 than in HY. The annual average nitrate leaching under the OPT-2 practice was the lowest and reached 25.5%–60.0% compared with those under other practices. Among the four practices, the OPT-2 practice achieved the most preferable results; the lowest N loss and the highest NUE were obtained at the expense of a slight decrease in grain yield. The experiment is to explore the efficient and comprehensive utilization of maize straw resources to achieve the sustainability of the soil fertility under double cropping of winter wheat and summer maize. Summer maize hybrid Denghai 605 (DH605) and winter wheat variety Tainong 18 (TN18) were used as experimental materials. Based on all winter wheat straw returned to the field, the treatment of all summer maize straw (SR) and half of summer maize straw (1/2SR) and summer maize straw not returned to the field (CK) 3 experimental treatments were tested for 8 consecutive years. Under the condition of normal nitrogen application of 210 kg ha−1, two split areas were set to reduce the amount of nitrogen fertilizer by 15% and 30% (SR-15%、SR-30%、1/2SR-15%、1/2SR-30%、CK-15%、CK-30%) at the beginning of the 2016 wheat season. In the first two years of reduced nitrogen application, the yields of SR and 1/2SR treatments were significantly higher than that of CK under the same nitrogen application conditions, while the yields of SR, 1/2SR, SR-15%, and 1/2SR-15% were not significantly different. In the third year of the process of reducing nitrogen fertilizer, compared with SR, 1/2SR, and SR-15% treatments, the yield of 1/2SR-15% were significantly reduced by 9% under winter wheat season. During winter wheat and summer maize season, the nitrogen use efficiency, and nitrogen absorption efficiency of SR and 1/2SR were significantly increased compared with CK treatment under the same nitrogen rate, of which SR-15% treatment was not significantly different from SR and 1/2SR. The pre-anthesis nitrogen transfer rate and nitrogen harvest index of summer maize treated with SR, 1/2SR, SR-15% and 1/2SR-15% were also significantly increased, compared with CK and CK-15% treatments. The win-win situation of ecological and crop yield can be achieved by return half of the straw to the field or reducing the nitrogen fertilizer application by 15% under the condition of straw returned to the field. • Returning the full amount of summer corn to the field can stably replace 15% of the nitrogen fertilizer application. • The yield stability and NUE of SR-15% treatment are not significantly different between with SR and 1/2 SR treatments. • The 1/2SR treatment can achieve a synergistic increase in crop yield and nitrogen utilization under NCP in China. Abstract: Excessive nitrogen (N) fertilizer application, outdated fertilization techniques, and non-optimal planting patterns are current cultivation problems with summer maize (Zea mays L.) among smallholders in North China. To try to solve those problems, this study examined four integrated agronomic management treatments-MT (FP: traditional farming practices; OPT-1: an optimized combination of cropping systems and fertilizer treatment; HY: treatment based on high-yield studies; and OPT-2: further optimized combination of cropping systems and fertilizer treatment) and four N application rate treatments-NT (0, 129.0, 184.5, and 300.0kgha−1). Maize grain yield and N efficiency were determined under each treatment. Grain yield, yield components, individual/population dry matter weight, N partial factor productivity (PFPN), N use efficiency (NUE), and agronomic efficiency of N (AEN) were measured. Results from the NT revealed no significant increase in grain yield in response to N applied above 184.5kgha−1 and increased yield was achieved by the MT. In MT, the change in sowing method from relay intercropping to direct seeding was effective in avoiding maize rough dwarf virus and in encouraging mechanized production; individual and population dry matter accumulation from the tasseling stage (VT) to physiological maturity stage (R6) increased in response to delayed sowing date and harvesting time; grain yield increased significantly from more ears per hectare due to increased planting density; and high N efficiency was achieved after optimizing fertilization patterns. In this study, OPT-2 obtained 67.0%, 104.0%, and 53.5% higher grain yield, PFPN, and NUE, respectively, compared to FP, achieving high yield and high N efficiency. Abstract: Field experiments were conducted at the Luancheng Agro-Ecosystem Experimental Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences during the winter wheat growing seasons in 2006–2007 and 2007–2008. Experiments involving winter wheat with 1, 2, and 3 irrigation applications at jointing, heading, or milking were conducted, and the total irrigation water supplied was maintained at 120mm. The results indicated that irrigation during the later part of the winter wheat growing season and increase in irrigation frequency decreased the available soil water; this result was mainly due to the changes in the vertical distribution of root length density. In ≤30-cm-deep soil profiles, 3 times irrigation at jointing, heading, and milking increased the root length density, while in >30-cm-deep soil profiles, 1 time irrigation at jointing resulted in the highest root length density. With regard to evapotranspiration (ET), there was no significant (LSD, P <0.05) difference between the regimes wherein irrigation was applied only once at jointing; 2 times at jointing and heading; and 3 times at jointing, heading, and milking. Compared with 1 and 3 times irrigation during the winter wheat growing season, 2 times irrigation increased grain yield and 2 times irrigation at jointing and heading produced the highest water-use efficiency (WUE). Combining the results obtained regarding grain yield and WUE, it can be concluded that irrigation at the jointing and heading stages results in high grain yield and WUE, which will offer a sound measurement for developing deficit irrigation regimes in North China.
