Seed production plays an important role in aquaculture. The sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus is an important marine aquaculture species in many Asian countries. By 2020, the annual total seed production of A. japonicus reached 551 billion individuals in China. However, the traditional method of culturing A. japonicus larvae is cost intensive and causes environmental pollution. In this study, we developed an eco‐friendly method for rearing sea cucumber larvae. We designed a cage system to provide a suitable living environment for larvae in open‐air outdoor ponds, and then, we identified 0.2 larvae per ml as the optimal stocking density for larval rearing. We also found that substrates made of oyster and scallop shells were optimal for larval settlement. A. japonicus larvae showed good survival, growth, development and settlement when cultured using this low‐cost and non‐polluting method. Background: Although professional identity is a strong predictor of career choice, only a few studies have reported on medical students' career attitude during a public health emergency. This study investigates the changes in medical students' professional identity and career attitude during the COVID-19 pandemic, evaluates their mental health and social support system under stress, and explores the relationship between their career attitude and other factors. Methods: An online survey of 6,226 Chinese medical students was conducted to collect information on demographics, professional identity, and career attitude. The collected data were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and the Social Support Rating Scale. Results: The results revealed that most (80.8%) of the participants did not change their career attitude and the professional identity of most participants strengthened, and they preferred to participate on the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of depression and anxiety among medical students was 22.86% and 35.43%. Low social support, depressive symptoms, male gender, and higher grades were factors that negatively affected career attitude. Conclusions: After the outbreak of the pandemic, it was necessary to conduct diversified professional identity research to support medical students, especially those with low social support and depressive symptoms. Background: As one of the oldest traditional dyes, people worldwide have used natural indigo for centuries. Local people have unique knowledge about indigo identification, which is crucial for indigo quality control and determining the dyeing effects. However, such traditional knowledge is rarely documented and explained. Therefore, the aims of this study were to document and assess the traditional knowledge used by local people when identifying natural indigo paste as well as quantitatively explore the characteristics and material basis of such traditional knowledge. Method: Three field surveys were conducted between 2019 and 2020. A total of 283 traditional indigo-paste artisans were interviewed in Guizhou, Yunnan, and Fujian Provinces. The frequency of citation, mention index, and fidelity level of each indigo-paste quality criterion were calculated to determine the most commonly used, recognized, and important quality criteria. To explore the characteristics and material basis of the traditional knowledge, we analyzed 21 indigo-paste samples using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD), pH, and particle size analyses. Results: Local people possess unique knowledge to identify natural indigo. Based on this knowledge accumulated over thousands of years, four criteria (color, taste, touch, and dyeing ability) were chosen by local people, and using these criteria, nature indigo was divided into five quality grades. The best quality indigo paste was judged according to the following folk criteria: dark blue in color with a purple-red luster; smooth and difficult to wipe off; having a sweet, bitter or spicy taste; and easy cloth dyeing. Additionally, the higher the contents of indigo and indirubin—especially indirubin—the better is the quality of the indigo paste. Within the pH range of 9–12, high-quality indigo-paste was more acidic. There was no significant relationship between particle size and quality. Conclusion: The ancient methods used by local people for identifying natural indigo are comprehensive and unique. By documenting the various folk quality criteria and conducting quantitative analyses, this study revealed the importance of indirubin and pH for assessing the quality of indigo paste. These findings differ from existing quality standards for synthetic indigo. The mass mortalities of sea cucumber Apostichpous japonicus have prevailed in northern China, mainly attributing to the emergence of extreme environmental conditions, that is hyperthermia and hyposalinity. The high‐quality sea cucumber seedlings appear to possess more robust resistance to adverse conditions. There are usually indoor‐ and outdoor‐cultured seedlings in industrial production of sea cucumbers. Although the outdoor‐cultured sea cucumbers are practically considered to be more strong and robust, the effective evaluation approach to distinguish these seedlings has been scarce. The current study compared survival and immune performances of indoor‐ and outdoor‐cultured A. japonicus under combined exogenous stressors, that is hyperthermia and hyposalinity. Results based on secondary stress induction revealed that the activities of immune enzymes and levels of catecholamines in body wall of outdoor‐cultured seedlings were prominently higher than those of indoor‐cultured seedlings recovered for 0–72 hr following sublethal stress (30°C and 25 psu of salinity). The opposite case occurred on immune enzymes in coelomic fluid of the two sources of seedlings except for myeloperoxidase. Importantly, the outdoor‐cultured seedlings, which were recovered for 72 hr after sublethal stress, exhibited a 93% of cumulative survival rate following 7 days of recovery after lethal stress (33°C and 20 psu of salinity), 27% higher than the indoor‐cultured seedlings. Collectively, the outdoor‐cultured A. japonicus seedlings showed more superior quality than the hatchery‐produced seedlings in terms of survival and immune performance. These findings provide practically useful information towards quality distinction of the indoor‐ and outdoor‐cultured sea cucumbers, which could benefit the aquaculture industry to obtain high‐quality seedlings. The concentrations of eight heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were measured in the sediment, the isolated microplastics from the sediment and the body wall of sea cucumbers from farms in China. Accordingly, the heavy metal concentrations in the sediment were below the class I upper limit of Chinese sediment quality guidelines. Among heavy metals, the median concentrations of Cd and As were higher in the body wall than in the corresponding sediment. Additionally, the median concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn were higher on the microplastics than in the corresponding sediment. Furthermore, there was no significant correlation among heavy metals in sediment, sea cucumber and microplastics. This study contributes to the understanding of the heavy metal accumulation in the sediment, the microplastics and the body wall of the sea cucumber. Protein is a necessary nutrient for the sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus , an important commercial species in China, South Korea and Japan. In this study, the dietary protein requirements of two newly discovered color morphs—white and purple was investigated and compared with the common, green morph. The green, white and purple morphs were fed a diet with five different protein levels (1, 6, 11, 16 and 21%) for 60 days with a mixture of soybean meal and fish meal (1:1) as the protein source, and their growth, energy budget, physiological and immunological performance were measured. Results showed that dietary protein levels had a significant effect on the growth performance of A. japonicus (P < 0.05). The maximum specific growth rate (SGR) and proportion of energy allocated for growth occurred at dietary protein levels of 6 and 11%, and the food conversion efficiency (FCE) was highest at the 11% protein level, indicating that the optimum dietary protein level for these color morphs is at ~ 11%. Apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter (ADMD) and crude protein (ACPD) increased, but the ingestion rate decreased with increasing dietary protein levels, due perhaps to the decreased sea-mud content of the diets. The energy allocated to excretion, and the free ammonia and malonaldehyde content in coelomic fluid increased with increasing dietary protein levels, which can be explained by enhanced protein metabolism. Trypsin activity decreased significantly when dietary protein was > 16%, indicating that the protein content was beyond the digestive ability of sea cucumber, and that excess protein in the diet inhibits protein digestion. Catalase (CAT) and glutamic–oxaloacetic transaminase activity was positively and significantly correlated with SGR, indicating that rapid growth was supported by a robust immune system and effective protein metabolism. At a 1% dietary protein level, the purple color morph had significantly higher SGR, FCE, ACPD and CAT activity, and allocated more energy for growth than the green morph, indicating that the purple morph may be better adapted to a low protein diet than the green morph. The white morph had lower SGR, FCE, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and CAT activity, and allocated less energy to growth, but had a higher excretion energy and higher free ammonia content in coelomic fluid than the green or purple morphs, indicating a difference or physiological defect in protein metabolism in the white morph. An artificial oyster shell reef was deployed in Rongcheng Bay, East China. However, the effects of this reef on the surrounding macrobenthic communities were unknown. We compared sedimentary factors, macrobenthic biomass, abundance, and community composition and ecological indicators between the reef and non-reef areas over a one year period. The mean values for chlorophyll a (Chl a), total organic matter (TOM), total organic carbon (TOC), and total nitrogen (TN) content in surface sediments in the reef area were slightly higher than those in the non-reef area. The Chl a levels differed significantly between the two areas, but the TOM, TOC, and TN were not significantly different. The abundance of crustaceans was significantly different between the two areas, but the abundance and biomass of polychaetes, echinoderms, mollusk did not differ significantly. The permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) revealed that the macrobenthic community differed significantly through time and analysis of similarity multivariate analyses (ANOSIM) revealed that the macrobenthic community differed significantly in some months. The ecological indicators revealed that the environmental quality of the reef area was slightly better than that of the non-reef area. Overall, our results suggest that the artificial oyster shell reef may change the macrobenthic community and the quality of the environment. Despite the lack of an effect in the short term, long-term monitoring is still needed to evaluate the effects of artificial oyster shell reefs on macrobenthic communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A national anthem is arguably one of the most powerful symbols for a nation-state, with impact beyond its ceremonial purposes. One source of its power lies in the lyrical content, bearing imprints of the past and texts for potentially guiding future behavior. In this paper we study the social foundations of national anthems with the Chinese national anthem as a case by analyzing its production through two changing texts-the lyrics of the anthem and key political documents from the period of 1949-2005. The current national anthem, 'March of the Volunteers,' adopted in 1949, was forbidden during the Cultural Revolution, and was restored in 1978, albeit with a new set of lyrics, and used until 1982 when the original lyrics were restored. Drawing upon the literature on collective focus (as defined by Cerulo) and social relations (as informed by Weber), we build a theoretical model for understanding the changes in the Chinese national anthem. According to this model, the creation of collective memory in the form of a national anthem is conditioned by the cognitive and social context in terms of the type of collective focus (singular or multiple) and the kind of top-bottom social relation (rational or traditional). In recent years, antibiotics have been widely detected in coastal waters of China, which raising concerns for coastal biodiversity and aquaculture. This study evaluated the effects of short-term exposure of norfloxacin (NOR) on oxidative stress and intestinal health of the large yellow croaker Pseudosciaena crocea. Juvenile fish were exposed to four concentrations of NOR (0.1, 10, 100 and 1000 μg/L) for 14 days. The results showed that NOR inhibited growth and threatened the survival of juveniles. According to the changes of intestinal microbiota, we found that NOR led to a significant decrease in intestinal microbiota diversity, with the decreased relative abundance of Proteobacteria , but the increased Tenericutes. From the perspective of microbial function, NOR inhibited metabolism, cellular defence mechanism and information transduction process. In terms of biochemical indicators, NOR caused an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) level and inhibited superoxide dismutase (SOD) and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) activities. Catalase (CAT) activity was activated at low concentration but significantly inhibited at high concentration of NOR. Moreover, there was a high correlation between change in biochemical indicators and change in the microbial community. Overall, environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1 μg/L) and high concentrations (10, 100 and 1000 μg/L) of NOR have negative effects on the defence function and intestinal health of large yellow croaker juveniles. Background: Historically, indigo-yielding plant species were important cash crops from Central Asia to the southern United States and Central America. Indigo-dyed textiles were widely traded along the legendary Silk Road that linked China to Europe. Today, due to the labor-intensive nature of indigo extraction at the household level, lifestyle changes and the widespread availability of commercially produced indigo paste, traditional indigo extraction methods have declined in villages. Yet Li textile weavers on Hainan Island are internationally recognized as producers of indigo-dyed textile using warp ikat techniques. In contrast, Hainan Miao weavers produce indigo-dyed textiles using batik (wax resist) techniques. The aim of this study was to document the indigenous knowledge on indigo-yielding plant species used by both Hainan Miao and Li people on Hainan Island, China. Method: Ethnic uses were documented during three field surveys, through a questionnaire survey of 193 respondents, comprising 144 Hainan Miao and 49 Li traditional dyers. Mention index (QI), Availability index (AI), and Preference ranking (PR) of each indigo-yielding plant species were calculated to screen out plant resources with potential development value. Results: Five indigo-yielding plant species (from four plant families and four genera) were historically used by Hainan Miao and Li dyers. However, just four species are still in use. Strobilanthes cusia was the main indigo source for Hainan Miao dyers. Li dyers also commonly use Indigofera species (I. tinctoria and I. suffruticosa) for indigo extraction. Wrightia laevis is less commonly used as a contemporary indigo source. Indigo extraction by steeping in water to which lime is added to increase the pH is sharing by the five indigo-yielding plant species. Strobilanthes cusia had the highest QI, AI and PR values in Hainan Miao villages. Indigofera tinctoria had the highest QI and AI values, but Indigofera suffruticosa was preferred by Li dyers. Conclusion: In the process of modernization and urbanization, some Hainan Miao and Li dyers retain the traditional indigo extraction methods. We found that Strobilanthes cusia and Indigofera tinctoria have the most potential for sustainable indigo production in the future. Furthermore, this study documents the details of extraction method from Wrightia laevis for the first time and the use of Ricinus communis seeds in that process. As one of the last places globally where Wrightia laevis is still used for indigo production, the may also be a nice market among textile collectors and museums that keeps the tradition of Wrightia laevis production and use for indigo extraction alive. We explored the relationship between stress and depression among 296 new urban older adults in China aged 60 years and older, along with the moderating effect of relocation duration and the mediating effect of anxiety. Participants completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales–simplified Chinese version. Results show that stress was a risk factor for depression, relocation duration moderated the relationship between stress and depression, and this moderating effect was mediated by anxiety. The importance of focusing on and preventing mental health problems among new urban older adults in China is discussed, with a focus on stress-induced anxiety and depression, and the feasibility of intervention at different stages postrelocation. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles of terrestrial ecosystems play key roles in global climate change and ecosystem sustainability. In recent decades, climate change has threatened the nutrient balance of dryland ecosystems. However, its impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (STN) in drylands of China are still unclear. In this study, the structural equation model (SEM) was used to explain the relationship between environmental variables used by the best model and SOC or STN. Then Adaptive Boosting Regressor (AdaBoost), Gradient Boosting Regression (GBRT), Extreme gradient boosting Regression (XGBoost) and Random Forest Regression (RF) were used to establish the prediction model of SOC and STN based on soil samples along with environmental variables. The performance of these models was assessed based on a 10-fold cross-validation method using three statistical indicators. Finally, we predicted the SOC and STN of soil samples from 2000 to 2019 based on the best model. Overall, the RF model performed better at predicting SOC and STN in drylands than the other three prediction models (AdaBoost, GBRT, XGBoost). Climate factors were the main factors affecting SOC and STN in the study area. In the Alashan, a dryland in northern China, the precipitation in the growing season increased from 2000 to 2019, at a rate of 12.9 mm/decade. During the same period, the annual sunshine duration significantly decreased by 66 h/decade. Along with interannual hydrothermal variability, SOC showed a fluctuating upward trend at a rate of 0.04 g/kg/decade, while STN exhibited a fluctuating downward trend at 0.003 g/kg/decade from 2000 to 2019. Due to the effects of climate change, dryland were considered as potential sites for carbon sequestration. However, due to the annual hydrothermal variance causing dynamic annual changes, it was deemed unstable. Moreover, it would cause STN loss, which might reduce soil fertility. The photovoltaic (PV) power plants' power generation is affected obviously by the cleanliness of the photovoltaic modules. The dust is the primary source causing the pollution. Natural dust deposition is affected by human activities and meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and PM10 concentration in the region where PV modules are installed. The research efforts so far have been focused on predicting PV power outputs, however, in the real operations the PV outputs can significantly deviate from the prediction due to the dust pollution which, unfortunately, has not been fully investigated. This paper, to the authors' best knowledge, is the first research to analyze the dust composition and evaluate its impacts on the PV power outputs with the real field test data in East China Collected through a series of experiments completed in the lab of the Institute of Distributed Generation and Microgrid, Zhejiang University of Technology, in East China. A PV output forecasting model was set up first based on the irradiance and the component's temperature. Then a complete meteorological and electrical data online monitoring system was developed for data acquisition. The morphology of the dust particles on the investigated photovoltaic modules was observed by a scanning electron microscope, and the composition of the dust particles was measured by X-ray fluorescence. The research found that the dust accumulated on the surface of photovoltaic modules tend to form clusters under the influence of rainfall which is one major cause on fast dropping PV outputs. The analysis shows the dust deposit mainly comprises of SiO 2 and CaCO 3. Further analysis indicates in East China, the average dust density on PV modules is 0.644 g/m2 in a week and consequently the dust reduces the PV output power by 7.4% one week. The research is of significance not only in terms of giving the real-data based analysis on dust properties deposited on PV panels, but also on revealing the relationship between power output attenuation and dust deposition, which helps improve the PV power output prediction accuracy and develop efficient cleaning strategies for photovoltaic modules. • The dust deposit mainly comprises SiO 2 and CaCO 3 in East China. • The average dust density is 0.644 g/m2 in one week. • The dust reduces the output power of photovoltaic modules by 7.4% in one week. • PVIG performance of inside radiation and electricity yield is evaluated. • The thermal model is developed to predict accurate hourly electricity yield of PVIG. • PVIG shows the advantage in uniform distribution of inside radiation. • PVIG with checkerboard layouts increase the annual electricity yield by 2.2–3.2 kWh m−2. The agricultural photovoltaic panel integrated greenhouse (PVIG) are attempted to improve the utilization of solar energy for sustainable agriculture. This study proposes a numerical method to predict the radiation distribution and the electricity yield of a PVIG throughout the year using 3D radiation model and thermal model. The radiation model is validated in a PVIG in the southeast of China with 36 rooftop PV panels of straight-line layout and the PV array covering 25% of the greenhouse roof area. According to simulation of conventional greenhouse and PVIG with straight-line (La), crisscross (Lb) and checkerboard (Lc) PV panels' layouts, the performance of different PVIG is evaluated in terms of the non-uniformity of the radiation distribution, the radiation intensity and the electricity yield of PV panels. The non-uniformity of the hourly radiation under the La layout is not much different from the layout Lb and Lc, and the cumulative weekly radiation under the layout of La is increased by 8.3% and 12.7% in the experimental PVIG, respectively. The thermal model of PV panels mounted on the greenhouse roof is developed to accurately predict the PV electricity yield, considering the impact of greenhouses and external environments on PV panels. In contrast to the layouts of La and Lb, the annual electricity yield of PV panels with the layout of Lc raises by 3.2 and 2.2 kWh m−2 respectively. Compared with conventional greenhouse, the distribution and intensity of cumulative weekly radiation are not significantly affected by the optimal PV array covering 25% of the greenhouse roof area. The seabed desertification has increasingly highlighted the importance of benthic habitat restoration. Strategically engineered artificial reefs emerges as pivotal in achieving restoration objectives. However, the significant influence of foundation species on biotic components and ecosystem attributes within diverse artificial reefs has been underrecognized. This study collated twenty Ecopath models of artificial reefs and their corresponding natural control ecosystems along the coasts of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, China, categorizing them into five distinct system types predicated on the biomass and productivity of foundational species. Our results suggest that dimensionless indices, rather than actual system values, were posited to facilitate inter-comparative analysis. The comparative analysis revealed differences in biomass distribution, energy utilization, and trophic structure across the five ecosystem types. All the artificial reef systems collectively enhanced the utilization of primary production. Foundation species components formed the cornerstone of system functionality, significantly impacting ecosystem stability through modulation of energy flow dynamics. Distinct impacts were observed from shellfish and macroalgae; the former augmenting the detrital food chain, while the latter bolstering the grazing food chain. Bisphenols are emerging endocrine disrupting pollutant, and several studies have reported that they are already ubiquitous in various environmental matrices and intend to deposit in sediment. The primary sources of bisphenols are river and sewage discharge. Sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus), a typical deposit feeder, is one of the most important commercial marine species in Aisa. However, the effects of the bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues bisphenol AF (BPAF) on sea cucumber was unclear. In this study, we carried out field survey in major sea cucumber farming areas in northern China, with the aim of determining which bisphenol analogue is the major bisphenol contamination in this aquaculture area. The results showed that the presence of BPAF was detected in four sampling sites (Dalian, Tangshan, Laizhou, and Longpan). The mean level of BPAF in Laizhou sediment samples was the highest which reached to 9.007 ± 4.702 μ g/kg. Among the seawater samples, the BPAF only have been detected in the samples collected at Longpan. (0.011 ± 0.003 μ g/L). Furthermore, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the single and combined toxicity of BPA and BPAF on sea cucumbers. The concentrations were informed by the findings based on the results of field research. (0.1, 1.0, and 10 μ g/L). After exposure, the body weight gain, and specific growth rate showed no significant changes (P > 0.05). We observed the histological alterations in respiratory tree of treated sea cucumbers including the fusion and detachment of lining epithelial tissue, and increase of lumen space. However, the catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione (GSH) activity was not significantly changed (P > 0.05). We evaluated the effects of BPA and BPAF through calculating the integrated biomarker response index (IBR), and the results indicated that the toxicity of combined treatment was higher than single treatment. Microplastic ingestion by the farmed sea cucumber is undocumented. Microplastics were isolated from the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus that was collected from eight farms along the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea in China. To examine microplastic ingestion, the intestines were isolated, digested and then subjected to the floatation test. The microplastic abundance in the sediment ranged from 20 to 1040 particles kg -1 of dry sediment, while the ingested microplastics ranged from 0 to 30 particles intestine -1 . After filtering the coelomic fluid, the extracted microplastics from the coelomic fluid ranged from 0 to 19 particles animal -1 . Thus, we speculated that microplastics may transfer to the coelomic fluid of sea cucumber. The ingested microplastics did not correlate with the animal body weight but was site dependent, suggesting that sea cucumber may serve as sentinel for microplastic pollution monitoring in the sediment. The microplastics were identified by Fourier transform infrared micro spectroscopy, and the polymer types were mainly cellophane, polyester, and polyethylene terephthalate. This study revealed that, microplastics widely existed in sea cucumber farms, and that sea cucumbers ingest microplastics as suitable with their mouth open. Moreover, the microplastics might transfer to the coelomic fluid of the sea cucumber. Objective: To investigate differences in genetic risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Han Chinese as compared with Europeans., Methods: A genome-wide association study was conducted in China with 952 patients and 943 controls, and 32 variants were followed up in 2,132 patients and 2,553 controls. A transpopulation meta-analysis with results from a large European RA study was also performed to compare the genetic architecture across the 2 ethnic remote populations., Results: Three non-major histocompatibility complex (non-MHC) loci were identified at the genome-wide significance level, the effect sizes of which were larger in anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA)-positive patients than in ACPA-negative patients. These included 2 novel variants, rs12617656, located in an intron of DPP4 (odds ratio [OR] 1.56, P = 1.6 × 10(-21) ), and rs12379034, located in the coding region of CDK5RAP2 (OR 1.49, P = 1.1 × 10(-16) ), as well as a variant at the known CCR6 locus, rs1854853 (OR 0.71, P = 6.5 × 10(-15) ). The analysis of ACPA-positive patients versus ACPA-negative patients revealed that rs12617656 at the DPP4 locus showed a strong interaction effect with ACPAs (P = 5.3 × 10(-18) ), and such an interaction was also observed for rs7748270 at the MHC locus (P = 5.9 × 10(-8) ). The transpopulation meta-analysis showed genome-wide overlap and enrichment in association signals across the 2 populations, as confirmed by prediction analysis., Conclusion: This study has expanded the list of alleles that confer risk of RA, provided new insight into the pathogenesis of RA, and added empirical evidence to the emerging polygenic nature of complex trait variation driven by common genetic variants., (Copyright © 2014 by the American College of Rheumatology.)
