Purpose: This study aimed to investigate awareness of tuberculosis control among post-treatment tuberculosis patients, in order to provide a basis for future preventive and control work in this population. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on post-treatment patients with tuberculosis in seven districts of Jinan City between July 2021 and December 2022. A face-to-face or telephone interviews using structured questionnaires for the research subjects were conducted by data collectors. Analyses were carried out first for all subjects, and then separately for male and female subjects. Results: A total of 837 valid questionnaires were collected, of which 495 were males and 342 were females. The awareness rate of the core TB knowledge was 82.46%. The ≥ 65 year group in the total group (OR=0.43, 95% CI: (0.28, 0.68)), male (OR=0.47, 95% CI: (0.27, 0.83)) and female group (OR=0.40, 95% CI: (0.19, 0.86)) was lower than that of the control group. Educational level and monthly income are the main factors of TB cognition in total group. People with university or higher education (OR=2.05, 95% CI: (1.38, 3.05)) and with a monthly income of ≥ 6,000 (OR=1.89, 95% CI: (1.10, 3.25)) had a higher awareness rate. The group with current residence in the city was more aware than the reference group. Conclusion: In the future, the communication of the main transmission route, suspicious symptoms, and cure of TB needs to be strengthened for the post-treatment TB patients. The elderly, those with secondary school education or below, agricultural workers and low-income people are the groups with weak knowledge of TB, and they are also the groups that need to be focused on health education. Phellodendron has always been of great significance in promoting human health and ecological restoration. However, human activities and climate change have severely affected habitat, population dynamics and sustainable use of Phellodendron. Little is known about the geographical distribution pattern and their responses to climate change of Phellodendron. In order to reveal the impact of climate change on Phellodendron, we conducted a study based on natural distribution data of two species (297 occurrence points), 20 environmental factors, and an optimized MaxEnt model. Our results identified the main environmental factors influencing Phellodendron, predicted their potential geographical distribution, and assessed migration trends under climate change in China. Our analysis showed that Ph. amurense and Ph. chinense have potential suitable habitats of 62.89 × 104 and 70.71 × 104 km2, respectively. Temperature and precipitation were found to play an essential role in shaping the present geographical distribution of Phellodendron populations. Based on two future climate scenarios, we forecasted that the potential suitable habitat of Ph. amurense would decrease by 12.52% (SSP245) and increase by 25.28% (SSP585), while Ph. chinense would decline by 19.61% (SSP245) and 15.78% (SSP585) in the late‐21st century. The potential suitable habitats of Ph. amurense and Ph. chinense would shift to northward and westward, respectively. Hydrothermal change was found to be the primary driver of the suitable habitat of Phellodendron populations in the future. We recommend establishing nature reserves for existing Phellodendron populations, especially Ph. chinense. Our study provided a practical framework for the impact of climate change on the suitable habitat of Phellodendron species and guided regional cultivation, long‐term conservation, and sustainable use. Atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) chemistry is of critical importance to air quality during polluted haze events, especially in China. However, current air quality models (such as WRF-CHEM, WRF-CMAQ, Box-MCM) generally underestimate the concentration of HONO, leading to a lack of fundamental understanding of haze pollution. Here, by combining field observations during haze events in Beijing and modeling results, we developed the new parameterization scheme for heterogeneous nitrogen dioxide (NO2) reaction on aerosol surfaces with the synergistic effects of relative humidity and ammonia, which has not been considered in existing air quality models. Including NO2 heterogeneous reactions into modeling significantly improves the estimation accuracy of HONO and OH levels, with the contribution reaching up to 91% and 78% during pollution episodes. The OH derived by HONO can partly explain high concentrations of particulate matter. Together, our work provides a new approach to illustrate the formation of HONO, OH, and haze with the consideration of heterogeneous NO2 → HONO chemistry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most variations in the human genome refer to single-nucleotide variation (SNV), small fragment insertions and deletions, and genomic copy number variation (CNV). Many human diseases including genetic disorders are associated with variations in the genome. These disorders are often difficult to be diagnosed because of their complex clinical conditions, therefore, an effective detection method is needed to facilitate clinical diagnosis and prevent birth defects. With the development of high-throughput sequencing technology, the method of targeted sequence capture chip has been extensively used owing to its high throughput, high accuracy, fast speed, and low cost. In this study, we designed a chip that potentially captured the coding region of 3043 genes associated with 4013 monogenic diseases, with an addition of 148 chromosomal abnormalities that can be identified by targeting specific regions. To assess the efficiency, a strategy of combining the BGISEQ500 sequencing platform with the designed chip was utilized to screen variants in 63 patients. Eventually, 67 disease-associated variants were found, 31 of which were novel. The results of the evaluation test also show that this combined strategy complies with the requirements of clinical testing and has proper clinical application value. Genetic testing: One-step targeted sequencing helps diagnose genetic disorders A new DNA screening method potentially offers a one-step solution to the challenge of diagnosing genetic diseases. A team from China led by Xiaoming Wei from BGI Genomics in Shenzhen and Yang Wan from the Fuyang People's Hospital has designed a DNA chip that captures the coding regions of 4,013 disease-causing genes plus another 148 common chromosomal abnormalities. The targeted next-generation sequencing strategy can detect a variety of genomic alterations including single-letter mutations as well as chromosomal abnormalities including insertions, deletions and duplications of larger pieces of DNA. The researchers ran the test on blood samples from 63 patients with genetic disorders. Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is capable of causing transboundary diseases characterized by fever, nodules on the skin, mucous membranes, and inner organs. The disease may cause emaciation with the enlargement of lymph nodes and sometimes death. It has had endemic importance in various parts of Asia in recent years, causing substantial economic losses to the cattle industry. The current study reported a suspected LSDV infection (based on signs and symptoms) from a mixed farm of yak and cattle in Sichuan Province, China. The clinical samples were found positive for LSDV using qPCR and ELISA, while LSDV DNA was detected in Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles. The complete genome sequence of China/LSDV/SiC/2021 was determined by Next-generation sequencing. It was found that China/LSDV/SiC/2021 is highly homologous to the novel vaccine-related recombinant LSDV currently emerging in China and countries surrounding China. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that the novel vaccine-associated recombinant LSDV formed a unique dendrograms topology between field and vaccine-associated strains. China/LSDV/SiC/2021 was found to be a novel recombinant strain, with at least 18 recombination events via field viruses identified in the genome sequence. These results suggest that recombinant LSDV can cause high mortality in yaks, and its transmission might be due to the Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, which acts as a mechanical vector. Based on the daily temperature and precipitation data from 1961 to 2021 obtained from 2019 national meteorological stations of China, and by means of Meteorological Drought Comprehensive Index (MCI) and some improved identification methods, we identified all drought event processes in all the seven regions of China in this paper. We also carefully analyzed these regional droughts and made following conclusions: drought was spreading towards southern China with an increasing frequency; consecutive drought year group occurred in all the seven regions of China with an increasing frequency under the background of global warming; both drought duration and comprehensive intensity consistently changed with the area affected by drought, with a correlation coefficient of 0.52–0.67 and 0.88–0.99 respectively, and passed the significance test of 0.05. The method used in this paper could be employed to effectively monitor and evaluate drought processes from multiple dimensions including duration, comprehensive intensity and area affected by drought. Microbiota in the pit mud (PM) plays a crucial role in the production of Chinese strong-flavor liquor (CSFL), the most popular distilled liquor in China. However, previous studies used total microbes, instead of viable ones, for the characterization of the microbial community in this environment. In this study, we used propidium monoazide (PMA) combined with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to verify the effect of non-viablee bacteria on the characterization of PM bacteria. After PMA concentration optimization, 50 μM PMA was chosen to pretreat 5 and 20 years PMs. The qPCR results showed that there were 50.78 and 71.84% of non-viable bacteria in the 5-year PM and 20-year PM, respectively. Both copy numbers of total bacteria and viable bacteria were significantly higher in 20-year PM than those in 5-year PM. Nevertheless, in terms of bacterial diversity and composition analyses at the operational taxonomic unit (OTU), phylum, class, and genus levels, 16S rRNA gene sequencing results displayed no significant differences between total bacteria and viable bacteria in both PM types. In conclusion, it is necessary for non-viable bacteria to be considered in determining absolute biomass of bacteria in PM, but not necessary in the analysis of diversity and composition of PM bacteria. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first attempt to analyze viable bacteria in the PM of CSFL and provides useful information on how to accurately characterize a microbial community in a PM environment. Background: Acute diarrhea is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, particularly in those under the age of 5 years. Rotavirus is recognized as the leading cause of acute diarrhea in children, however, the contribution of bacterial pathogens as causative agents varies throughout the world. Here we report a hospital-based prospective study to analyze the characteristics of bacterial pathogens associated with acute diarrhea in children under 5 years of age.Methods: Stool samples were collected from 508 patients with acute diarrhea under 5 years of age who presented at our hospital. Nine pathogens were isolated and identified by culturing, serology or PCR, these included Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Vibrio cholerae, diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC), Aeromonas spp., Plesiomonas spp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Campylobacter spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica. Antimicrobial sensitivity tests of these pathogens were conducted. The most commonly detected pathogen, Salmonella spp., was further investigated by PCR and sequencing of antibiotic resistance-related genes.Results: Pathogens were identified in 20.1 % of the 508 samples. The most commonly detected pathogens were Salmonella spp. (8.5 %), followed by DEC (4.7 %), Campylobacter jejuni (3.0 %) and Aeromonas spp. (2.0 %). The resistance rates to ampicillin and tetracycline in Salmonella spp. were >60 %, but were <30 % to cephalosporins and quinolones. More than 50 % of DEC strains displayed resistance to ampicillin, cefotaxime and tetracycline, and 60 % of C. jejuni strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin but highly sensitive to the other antibiotics. Among 12 cephalosporin-resistant Salmonella isolates, TEM-1 and CTX-M-14 determinants were present in two (16.7 %) isolates. PCR screening for plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes revealed gyrA mutations in one of three highly quinolone resistant isolates.Conclusions: Salmonella spp., DEC, Campylobacter spp. and Aeromonas spp. were the most commonly detected bacterial pathogens in children under the age of 5 years with acute diarrhea. Our findings indicate that ampicillin and tetracycline are not suitable as first line therapeutic drugs against Salmonella spp. Resistance to third generation cephalosporins and quinolones was also detected. TEM-1 and CTX-M-14 genetic determinants, and gyrA mutations, were the major mechanisms associated with high levels of cephalosporin and quinolone resistance, respectively, in Salmonella isolates. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze stability of Jintan underground rock salt gas storage caverns during operation period. Some factors such as complex geological and operation conditions and high variability of physico-mechanical parameters which will influence the safety of underground storage caverns are also considered. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, taking account of stability and sealability, numerical models of single cavern and two caverns for Jintan rock salt are established and calculated based on Mohr-Coulomb criterion and damage-dilatancy criterion. Response surface method combining with Monte Carlo method are adopted to calculate the failure probabilities of elements near the caverns. Various working conditions including different operation pressures and distances between caverns are also considered. Findings – Shear failure is the main failure mode of Jintan underground rock salt gas storage caverns. The major failure area is located in the middle of the cavern. Reliability of the middle part of the cavern improves as storage pressure increases. Research limitations/implications – According to the simulation results on stability and sealability of caverns, the smallest internal operation pressure should be controlled strictly during the gas release process. Plastic area and failure probabilities of elements near the caverns increase obviously as the distance between caverns decreases. Damaged and dilatancy areas have the same trend. Twice the diameter of the cavern is recommended as the minimum distance between caverns. The tomato is an important economic crop that is a main ingredient of some prepared food as well as a focus of the agricultural industry. Optimizing nitrogen (N) fertilizers is essential for sustainable agricultural development, while the excessive use of N fertilizers leads to environmental and food production problems. As a soil amendment, biochar has been widely used to improve soil quality and crop yield. However, little information is available on the effects of biochar and N fertilizer reduction on tomato plant, soil characteristics in tomato cultivation and tomato production. In this study, a greenhouse experiment was carried out in Yangling, Shaanxi province, China, including four biochar levels (0, 30, 50, and 70 t ha−1) under drip irrigation and four N application rates (170, 190, 210, and 250 kg ha−1). The results showed that adding too much biochar (e.g., 70 t ha−1) and reducing N fertilizer too far (e.g., by 32%) will not lead to satisfactory results in terms of tomato growth, tomato yield and quality, and economic benefits. Biochar addition could significantly enhance microbial abundance, enzyme activity, and tomato growth compared with non‒biochar treatments when reducing the amount of applied N fertilizer by 16% or 24% (N2 and N3). From the perspectives of tomato yield, tomato quality (sugar‒acid ratio and vitamin C (VC) content), and economic benefits, optimal application rate of biochar and N fertilizer based on the silty clay loam soil of northwest China under drip irrigation is proposed, respectively. The proposal is based on both multidimensional nonlinear regression models and a comparison with experimental treatments. For example, biochar addition at 50 t ha−1 and reducing N fertilizer by 24% achieved the greatest tomato yield. Compared with non-biochar treatment under the corresponding N fertilizer level, soil enzyme activity (urease, phosphatase, and catalase), microbial abundance (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes), leaf gas exchange parameters (gs, Pn, and Tr), and biomass increased on average by 88.76%, 7.49%, 43.23%, and 39.67%, respectively. Based on a comprehensive consideration of tomato yield, VC content, sugar‒acid ratio, and economic benefits, 35 t ha−1 biochar and 200 kg ha−1 N fertilizer is the recommended combination of biochar and nitrogen fertilizer for local farmers. Background: HL is the second most common congenital disability in China, and its high incidence brings a serious burden of medical and educational sequelae. HL genetic screening enables the identification of individuals with inherited HL and carriers in a large scale., Objective: This study aimed to measure the detection rates of hearing loss (HL)-associated gene mutations in the Gannan population. The molecular etiology and risk factors of hereditary HL were also analyzed., Methods: In total, 119,606 newborns from 18 districts of Gannan were enrolled in this multi-center study conducted between April 2019 and April 2021. Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) was used for primary hearing screening 3 days after birth in quiet conditions, and OAE combined with automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) was applied 29-42 days after birth for those who failed or missed the initial screening. Meanwhile, high-throughput sequencing of hotspot HL-associated mutations in GJB2, GJB3, MTRNR1, and SLC26A4 were performed., Results: Among the 119,606 newborns, 7796 (6.52%) failed the hearing screening. Genetic screening revealed that 5092 neonates (4.26%) carried HL-associated mutations. The detection rate of GJB2, SLC26A4, MTRNR1 and GJB3 mutations were 2.09%, 1.51%, 0.42% and 0.24%, respectively. The most prevalent variant was GJB2 c.235delC (1.74%). The second most prevalent variant was SLC26A4 c.919-2A > G (0.93%). The population who failed the hearing screening had a lower proportion (24.64%) of SLC26A4 gene variants compared to the population who passed (37.46%). Genetic screening identified 4612 (3.86%) carriers who were normal in hearing screenings. The concurrent hearing and genetic screening identified 480 (0.40%) neonates at high risk for hereditary HL., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the concurrent hearing screening and high-throughput genetic screening would greatly improve the effectiveness of newborn HL programs. Background: Thalassemia is an extremely prevalent monogenic inherited blood disorder in southern China. It is important to comprehensively understand the molecular spectrum of thalassemia in an area with such a high prevalence of thalassemia before taking appropriate actions for the prevention and treatment of this disorder. Herein, we explored the clinical feasibility of using next-generation sequencing (NGS) for large-scale population screening to illustrate the prevalence and spectrum of thalassemia in Southern Jiangxi., Methods: Blood samples collected from 136,312 residents of reproductive age in Southern Jiangxi were characterized for thalassemia by NGS. A retrospective analysis was then conducted on blood samples determined to be positive for thalassemia., Results: In total, 19,827 (14.545%) subjects were diagnosed as thalassemia carriers, and the thalassemia prevalence rate significantly varied by geographical region (p < 0.001). A total of 40 α-thalassemia genotypes including 21 rare genotypes were identified, with -@- SEA /αα being the most prevalent genotype. 42 β-thalassemia genotypes including 27 rare genotypes were identified, with the most common mutation IVS II-654 C > T accounting for 35.257% of these β-thalassemia genotypes. Furthermore, 74 genotypes were identified among 608 individuals with combined α- and β-thalassemia. Notably, most individuals with rare thalassemia mutations had mildly abnormal hematologic parameters including microcytic hypochromia., Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate the great heterogeneity and diverse spectrum of thalassemia in Southern Jiangxi, emphasizing the importance and necessity of persistent prevention and control of thalassemia in this region. Atmospheric oxidizing capacity (AOC) is the fundamental driving factors of chemistry process (e.g., the formation of ozone (O 3 ) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA)) in the troposphere. However, accurate quantification of AOC still remains uncertainty. In this study, a comprehensive field campaign was conducted during autumn 2019 in downtown of Beijing, where O 3 and PM 2.5 episodes had been experienced successively. The observation-based model (OBM) is used to quantify the AOC at O 3 and PM 2.5 episodes. The strong intensity of AOC is found at O 3 and PM 2.5 episodes, and hydroxyl radical (OH) is the dominating daytime oxidant for both episodes. The photolysis of O 3 is main source of OH at O 3 episode; the photolysis of nitrous acid (HONO) and formaldehyde (HCHO) plays important role in OH formation at PM 2.5 episode. The radicals loss routines vary according to precursor pollutants, resulting in different types of air pollution. O 3 budgets and sensitivity analysis indicates that O 3 production is transition regime (both VOC and NO x -limited) at O 3 episode. The heterogeneous reaction of hydroperoxy radicals (HO 2 ) on aerosol surfaces has significant influence on OH and O 3 production rates. The HO 2 uptake coefficient (γHO 2 ) is the determining factor and required accurate measurement in real atmospheric environment. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the diagnosis, treatment, and care for tuberculosis (TB). Delays in seeking TB care may result in increased community transmission and unfavorable treatment outcomes. We sought to understand the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the proportion of patients with TB who delayed seeking the diagnosis and care for TB and explore the reasons for their postponement., Methods: We surveyed a representative sample of outpatients treated for pulmonary TB from June to November 2020 using an anonymous standardized questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of factors associated with the postponement of TB care. We used routinely collected surveillance data to assess trends of TB reports before and after the emergence of COVID-19 (2017-2019 vs. 2020-2022) in Tianjin, China., Results: Among 358 participants who were diagnosed with pulmonary TB during the COVID-19 response, 61 (17%) postponed seeking TB diagnosis due to COVID-19, with 39 (64%) citing fear as the primary reason. Female sex (aOR:2.0; 95% CI: 1.1-3.7), previous antituberculosis treatment (aOR:3.2; 95%CI: 1.4-7.6), and TB diagnosis during the first-level response (aOR = 3.2, 1.7-6.2) were associated with the postponement. Among all 518 participants receiving antituberculosis treatment, 57 (11%) had postponed their regular healthcare visits due to COVID-19, 175 (34%) received no treatment supervision, and 32 (6%) experienced treatment interruption. Compared to 2017-2019, reported pulmonary TB declined by 36.8% during the first-level response to COVID-19, 23.5% during the second-level response, 14% during the third-level response in 2020, and 4.3% in 2021., Conclusion: The COVID-19 response reduced the number of people who sought and received diagnosis, treatment, and care for TB in Tianjin, China. Atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) is a dominant precursor of hydroxyl (OH) radicals, and its formation mechanisms are still controversial. Few studies have simultaneously explored effects of different combustion processes on HONO sources. Hereby, synchronous HONO measurement in urban (BJ), suburban (XH) and rural (DBT) areas with different combustion processes is performed in the North China Plain in winter. A box model is utilized to analyze HONO formation mechanisms. HONO concentration is the highest at the DBT site (2.51 ± 1.90 ppb), followed by the XH (2.18 ± 1.95 ppb) and BJ (1.17 ± 1.20 ppb) sites. Vehicle exhaust and coal combustion significantly contribute to nocturnal HONO at urban and rural sites, respectively. During a stagnant pollution period, the NO+OH reaction and combustion emissions are more crucial to HONO in urban and rural areas; meanwhile, the heterogeneous reaction of NO 2 is more significant in suburban areas. Moreover, the production rate of OH from HONO photolysis is about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that from ozone photolysis. Consequently, vehicle exhaust and coal combustion can effectively emit HONO, further causing environmental pollution and health risks. It is necessary to expand the implementation of the clean energy transition policy in China, especially in areas with substantial coal combustion.

The field observation of 54 non-methane hydrocarbon compounds (NMHCs) was conducted from September 1 to October 20 in 2020 during autumn in Haidian District, Beijing. The mean concentration of total NMHCs was 29.81 ± 11.39 ppbv during this period, and alkanes were the major components. There were typical festival effects of NMHCs with lower concentration during the National Day. Alkenes and aromatics were the dominant groups in ozone formation potential (OFP) and OH radical loss rate (L OH ). The positive matrix factorization (PMF) running results revealed that vehicular exhaust became the biggest source in urban areas, followed by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage, solvent usage, and fuel evaporation. The box model coupled with master chemical mechanism (MCM) was applied to study the impacts of different NMHCs sources on ozone (O 3 ) formation in an O 3 episode. The simulation results indicated that reducing NMHCs concentration could effectively suppress O 3 formation. HONO is an important component of reactive nitrogen (N r ) and precursors of OH radical. However, the source and removal of HONO are not clear. Here, measurements of HONO (May 18-31, 2018) were conducted in Xi'an and Xianyang simultaneously for the first time. The relationship between HONO and other N r (such as NO and NO 2 ) in two cities was analyzed. The mixing ratio of HONO in Xi'an was 1.2 ± 0.8 ppbv, and that in Xianyang was 1.2 ± 1.1 ppbv. The nighttime HONO mixing ratio was higher in Xianyang, while the daytime HONO was higher in Xi'an. Compared with the contribution from heterogeneous process of NO 2 , direct emissions and homogeneous processes (NO + OH) were less important for nocturnal HONO formation in these two cities. The relative contribution of heterogeneous process in Xianyang was more important than that in Xi'an. The reaction of NO 2 upon aerosols surface was identified as an important source of HONO for two sites. The conversion of NO 2 on the other surfaces might attend the heterogeneous formation of HONO in Xianyang site. Daytime HONO budget analysis indicated that there was an additional unknown formation process of HONO at two sites. The net OH production rate from HONO (from 08:00 to 17:00) was 1.6 × 10 7 and 1.3 × 10 7 molecule/(cm 3 s) for Xian and Xianyang, 5.2 and 3.5 times higher than from O 3 photolysis. Besides, a dust storm appeared during this observation period, and the impact of local emission and transport processes was separately analyzed. Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is an important indicator for photochemical pollution, formed similar to ozone in the photochemistry of certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of nitrogen oxides, and has displayed surprisingly high concentrations during wintertime that were better correlated to particulate rather than ozone concentrations, for which the reasons remained unknown. In this study, wintertime observations of PAN, VOCs, PM 2.5 , HONO, and various trace gases were investigated to find the relationship between aerosols and wintertime PAN formation. Wintertime photochemical pollution was affirmed by the high PAN concentrations (average: 1.2 ± 1.1 ppb, maximum: 7.1 ppb), despite low ozone concentrations. PAN concentrations were determined by its oxygenated VOC (OVOC) precursor concentrations and the NO/NO 2 ratios and can be well parameterized based on the understanding of their chemical relationship. Data analysis and box modeling results suggest that PAN formation was mostly contributed by VOC aging processes involving OH oxidation or photolysis rather than ozonolysis pathways. Heterogeneous reactions on aerosols have supplied key photochemical oxidants such as HONO, which produced OH radicals upon photolysis, promoting OVOC formation and thereby enhancing PAN production, explaining the observed PM 2.5 -OVOC-PAN intercorrelation. In turn, parts of these OVOCs might participate in the formation of secondary organic aerosol, further aggravating haze pollution as a feedback. Low wintertime temperatures enable the long-range transport of PAN to downwind regions, and how that will impact their oxidation capacity and photochemical pollution requires further assessment in future studies.

Background: Acute diarrhea is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, particularly in those under the age of 5 years. Rotavirus is recognized as the leading cause of acute diarrhea in children, however, the contribution of bacterial pathogens as causative agents varies throughout the world. Here we report a hospital-based prospective study to analyze the characteristics of bacterial pathogens associated with acute diarrhea in children under 5 years of age., Methods: Stool samples were collected from 508 patients with acute diarrhea under 5 years of age who presented at our hospital. Nine pathogens were isolated and identified by culturing, serology or PCR, these included Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Vibrio cholerae, diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC), Aeromonas spp., Plesiomonas spp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Campylobacter spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica. Antimicrobial sensitivity tests of these pathogens were conducted. The most commonly detected pathogen, Salmonella spp., was further investigated by PCR and sequencing of antibiotic resistance-related genes., Results: Pathogens were identified in 20.1 % of the 508 samples. The most commonly detected pathogens were Salmonella spp. (8.5 %), followed by DEC (4.7 %), Campylobacter jejuni (3.0 %) and Aeromonas spp. (2.0 %). The resistance rates to ampicillin and tetracycline in Salmonella spp. were >60 %, but were <30 % to cephalosporins and quinolones. More than 50 % of DEC strains displayed resistance to ampicillin, cefotaxime and tetracycline, and 60 % of C. jejuni strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin but highly sensitive to the other antibiotics. Among 12 cephalosporin-resistant Salmonella isolates, TEM-1 and CTX-M-14 determinants were present in two (16.7 %) isolates. PCR screening for plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes revealed gyrA mutations in one of three highly quinolone resistant isolates., Conclusions: Salmonella spp., DEC, Campylobacter spp. and Aeromonas spp. were the most commonly detected bacterial pathogens in children under the age of 5 years with acute diarrhea. Our findings indicate that ampicillin and tetracycline are not suitable as first line therapeutic drugs against Salmonella spp. Resistance to third generation cephalosporins and quinolones was also detected. TEM-1 and CTX-M-14 genetic determinants, and gyrA mutations, were the major mechanisms associated with high levels of cephalosporin and quinolone resistance, respectively, in Salmonella isolates.
