Siberian wildrye (Elymus sibiricus L.) is widely cultivated in the central and western regions of China. It is an important agricultural produce and utilized in animal feed and is also important for ecological environment protection. It is of great significance for the preservation and production of germplasm resource to elucidate the seed aging mechanism, such as delaying seed aging, prolonging seed life as well as repairing seed vigor. Information on seed aging including aging conditions, physiological and biochemical characteristics, damage to genomic DNA and genetic integrity of germplasm resource is limited but necessary for germplasm collection, conservation and effective commercial use. However, it is rarely reported on the transcriptome analysis of seed aging in Siberian wildrye. In this study, we analyzed the differentially accumulated TDF (Transcript-Derived Fragments) by cDNA-AFLP technique using 136 pairs primers, a total of 653 TDFs were identified. These up-regulated TDFs were picked for sequence alignment and functional analysis. The results showed that the sequences of TDFs are highly homologous in plants, which are pyruvate kinase, metal transport protein, DNA damage repair protein, lectin receptor kinase, and leucine zip transcription factor. Additionally, chloroplast structure was destroyed and energy consumption was increased in seed aging, at the same time, it could resist aging by increasing transcripts of relevant defense genes transporter genes and corresponding DNA damage repair genes when Siberian wildrye is aged. SUMMARY Published data on the long-term survival results of patients with localized esophageal carcinoma receiving late course accelerated hyper-fractionated radiotherapy (LCAF RT) versus conventional fractionated radiotherapy (CF RT) are inconclusive. In order to derive a more precise estimation of the both treatment-regimes, a meta-analysis based on systematic review of published articles was performed. A meta-analysis was performed using trials identified through Pubmed and Chinese national knowledge infrastructure. Results in 5-year survival and 5-year local control were collected from randomized trials comparing LCAF RT with CF RT. Review Manager (The Cochrane Collaboration, Oxford, England) and Stata software (Stata Corporation, College Station, TX, USA) were used for data management. A total of 11 trials were involved in this analysis with 572 cases and 567 controls. Our results showed that LCAF RT, compared with CF RT, significantly improved the 5-year survival (odds ratio [OR]= 2.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.15-4.00, P < 0.00001) and 5-year local control (OR = 3.96, 95% CI: 2.91-5.38, P < 0.00001). Background: Clinical presentation and DYT1 status amongst Chinese patients with primary dystonia have not been well studied. Methods: One hundred and twenty patients with primary dystonia from South-West China were studied in a prospective survey for 3.5 years. Severity and the resulting disability were assessed using the Burke–Fahn–Marsden dystonia rating scale (BFMDRS). Health related quality of life (HRQL) was measured through the 36-item short-form (SF-36). The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was utilized to identify and quantify depression and anxiety. Mutations in the DYT1 exon 5 were screened by direct sequencing. Results: Cervical dystonia was found to be the most frequent form of focal dystonia and was discovered to occur at an early age. Pain and tremor were the common associated symptoms. Family history was positive in 19.5% of the cases, with a trend of earlier onset. Depression (14.5%) and anxiety (6.6%) were the main HRQL impairments. Multiple linear regression analysis suggested that gender, depression, anxiety and functional disability were amongst the principal determinants of lower HRQL. Only one instance of DYT1 GAG deletion (1.4%) was detected in 71 patients. Conclusion: Our data on a cohort of Chinese patients show some difference from descriptions in other ethnic groups. This includes an earlier age of onset, a lower incidence of depression and female serving as a predictor factor of a HRQL. Similar to other cohorts, DYT1 gene mutations are rare. It is still controversial whether adjuvant chemotherapy of cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin can increase the overall survival of esophageal cancer patients, and which subgroup of patients get most benefits from it. Between 1998 and 2004, 66 esophageal cancer patients with adjuvant chemotherapy and 160 well-matched patients without chemotherapy were included in this study. Nine markers were measured in the protein level to analyze prognostic significance. In the whole group, adjuvant chemotherapy did not improve the survival of esophageal cancer patients. There was also no significant difference for survival in stage I ( P=0.59 and P=0.59), stage II ( P=0.28 and P=0.28) and stage III patients ( P=0.144 and P=0.06) between the observation and the chemotherapy group. Chemotherapy was most effective for the patients who had metastases in cervical and/or celiac lymph nodes (IV subgroup). One and 3-year disease-free survival and overall survival were significantly better than for those who did not receive the chemotherapy( P=0.038, and 0.016, respectively). Bcl-2 expression was a bad prognostic factor, and was more predictive in the adjuvant chemotherapy group than in the no-chemotherapy group. Adjuvant chemotherapy significantly improved the treatment result of stage IV patients compared with the observation group. Bcl-2 could be used to analyze prognosis and guide the adjuvant treatment. Given the increasing threat of water shortages in the extremely arid regions (rainfall<50 mm year−1) of northwestern China, growing season evapotranspiration (ET) associated with native species such as Tamarix ramosissima is of particular interest. Consequently, this study sought to evaluate the accuracy of daily ET estimates using Bowen ratio data, as well as measuring seasonal ET and development of an energy balance for a stand of T. ramosissima. Bowen ratio apparatus measurements of ET were carried out on a stand of T. ramosissima in a 2.04 km2 field, which are all covered with T. ramosissima near Erdaoqiao, Ejina Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. Soil moisture content and green area index were also monitored. Daily ET could be accurately estimated from Bowen ratio data on a continuous basis over the 153-day growing season. The mean daily T. ramosissima ET over this period was 1.62 mm day−1, for a seasonal total of 248.20 mm. In this extremely arid locale, the great majority of available energy dissipated over the growing season was a result of sensible rather than latent heat fluxes. While the heat storage term was the main source of energy at night and a considerable sink of energy during the daytime, the magnitude of the daily mean soil heat flux was small. Such a determination of temporal and ecosystem-specific ET patterns allows an improved prediction of ET in the desert riparian zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface- vs. ground-water chemistry in the Heihe River basin, assessed through field sampling of precipitation, surface water and groundwater, allowed geographical zones and chemical types to be differentiated. The geographical zones included: alpine ice-snow (>3,900 m), alpine meadow (3,400–3,900 m), mountain forest and shrub (2,600–3,400 m), mountain grassland (1,900–2,600 m) and desert grassland (1,500–1,900 m). Groundwater chemical types included: (1) mountain fissure and piedmont gravel, bicarbonate, (2) piedmont diluvial, alluvial and lacustrine plain, sulphate, and (3) desert salt-accumulating depression, chloride. Since the 1960s, large volumes of river water diverted for irrigation have been found to re-emerge as spring water at the edge of alluvial fans and then reintegrate the Heihe River. After a number of reuses and re-emergences in the middle reaches, the river’s level of mineralization has doubled. Hydrological changes have resulted in the marked degradation of aquatic habitats, and caused substantial, and expanding, land salinization and desertification. Objectives: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of typical pharmaceutical smoking cessation intervention strategies in China in the context of primary cancer prevention. Methods: Markov cohort simulation models were established to simulate the burden of 12 smoking caused cancer, including lung cancer, oral cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, laryngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, cervical cancer, and acute myeloid leukemia. Taking incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER) as the main indicator, the model sets one year as the cycling period for 50 periods and simulates the cohort of 10 000 thirty-five-year-old current smokers with various smoking cessation strategies. To ensure the robustness of conclusion, univariate sensitivity analysis, probability sensitivity analysis, and age-group sensitivity analysis were conducted. Results: The results showed that varenicline intervention was the most cost-effective intervention. Compared to the next most effective option, incremental cost of each additional quality-adjusted life year is 11 140.28 yuan, which is below the threshold of willingness to pay (1 year GDP per capita). The value of ICER increased as the increasing age group of adopting intervention, but neither exceeded the threshold of willingness to pay. One-way sensitivity analysis showed that the value of discount rate, the hazard ratio and cost of intervention strategy had a greater impact on the result of ICER. Conclusion: In China, the use of varenicline to quit smoking is highly cost effective in the context of cancer primary prevention, especially for younger smokers.

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of reinfection of 2019-nCoV and influencing factors, and provide evidence for effective prevention and control of COVID-19 epidemic. Methods: The incidence data of COVID-19 in Ningbo from January 1, 2020 to November 30, 2022 were collected from the infectious disease surveillance system of Chinese information system for disease control and prevention. The incidence of reinfection of 2019-nCoV was investigated by using questionnaire. logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the influences of gender, age, time interval from the first infection, history of underlying disease, 2019-nCoV vaccination dose and disease severity on the reinfection. Results: A total of 897 previous 2019-nCoV infection cases were investigated, of which 115 experienced the reinfection of 2019-nCoV, the reinfection rate was 12.82%. The interval between the two infections M ( Q 1 , Q 3 ) was 1 052 (504, 1 056) days. Univariate analysis showed that age, 2019-nCoV vaccination dose, history of underlying disease, type of 2019-nCoV variant causing the first infection, time interval from the first infection and severity of the first infection were associated with the reinfection rate (all P <0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk for reinfection in age group 30- years was higher than that in age group ≥60 years ( OR =2.10, 95% CI : 1.11-3.97). No reinfection occurred in those with time interval from the first infection of <6 months, and the risk for reinfection was higher in those with the time interval of ≥12 months than in those with the time interval of 6- months ( OR =6.68, 95% CI : 3.46-12.90). The risk for reinfection was higher in the common or mild cases than in the asymptomatic cases ( OR =2.64, 95% CI : 1.18-5.88; OR =2.79, 95% CI : 1.27-6.11). Conclusion: The time interval from the first infection was an important influencing factor for the reinfection of 2019-nCoV, and the probability of the reinfection within 6 months was low.

Objective: To investigate a SARS-CoV-2 epidemic reported in Rongcheng City, Weihai, Shandong Province. Methods: The SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid positive patients and their close contacts were investigated, and the whole genome sequencing and genetic evolution analysis of 9 variant viruses were carried out. An infection source investigation and analysis were carried out from two sources of home and abroad, and three aspects of human, material and environment. Results: A total of 15 asymptomatic infections were reported in this epidemic, including 13 cases as employees of workshop of aquatic products processing company, with an infection rate of 21.67% (13/60). Two cases were infected people's neighbors in the same village (conjugal relation). The first six positive persons were processing workers engaged in the first process of removing squid viscera in the workshop of the company. The nucleic acid Ct value of the first time were concentrated between 15 and 29, suggesting that the virus load was high, which was suspected to be caused by one-time homologous exposure. The whole genome sequence of 9 SARS-CoV-2 strains was highly homologous, belonging to VOC/Gamma (Lineage P.1.15). No highly homologous sequences were found from previous native and imported cases in China. It was highly homologous with the six virus sequences sampled from May 5 to 26, 2021 uploaded by Chile. The infection source investigation showed that the company had used the squid raw materials captured in the ocean near Chile and Argentina from May to June 2021 over the last 14 days. Many samples of raw materials, products and their outer packages in the inventory were tested positive for nucleic acid. Conclusion: This epidemic is the first local epidemic caused by the VOC/Gamma of SARS-CoV-2 in China. It is speculated that the VOC/Gamma, which was prevalent in South America from May to June 2021, could be imported into China through frozen squid.

Cancer is a major public health issue that seriously endangers the public health and social development of China. Future initiatives for cancer prevention and control should continue to adhere to the principle of prioritizing prevention, and comprehensively implement related prevention activities nationwide. This is critical to reducing cancer burden in Chinese residents, especially in the low- and middle-income populations and those living in areas that are less economically developed. In the past several decades, the international community has significantly reduced the incidence of related cancers through primary prevention measures such as tobacco control, improved occupational hygiene, and vaccination. China has also implemented a series of exploratory primary prevention measures among high-risk groups of cancer in specific areas including Xuanwei, Qidong, and Linxian, and achieved encouraging results. However, due to the low level of systematic awareness of cancer risk factors and the lack of awareness and ability of self-health management in Chinese residents, it is urgent to develop novel research tools and methods to further reveal the causes of cancer, and establish innovative mechanisms and systems of primary prevention of cancer at population and individual levels. Based on current status of the transformation of cancer spectrum and the development of digital intelligence, it would be beneficial to establish a smart digital system for primary cancer prevention service that can cover the entire population, integrating authoritative popular science education on primary prevention of cancer, individualized cancer risk assessment, and personalized health management assistant. This will improve primary cancer prevention among the Chinese general population and can help the sustainable development of cancer prevention and control in China.

Objective: To study the characteristics and risk factors of psychological and behavioral problems of children and adolescents of different ages and genders in long-term home-schooling during the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic. Further, to provide scientific basis for more targeted psychological intervention and coping strategies in the future. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using an online questionnaire was conducted on students aged 6-16 years old in five representative cities of North (Beijing), East (Shanghai), West (Chongqing), South (Guangzhou) and Middle (Wuhan) in China. In this study, the social behavior and psychological abnormalities which was defined as the positive of any dimension were investigated in multiple dimensions during long-term home-schooling. The influencing factors of psycho-behavioral problems were analyzed by Logistic regression, and the confounding factors were corrected with graded multivariable adjustment. Results: A total of 6 906 valid questionnaires were collected including 3 592 boys and 3 314 girls, of whom 3 626 were children (6-11 years old) and 3 280 were adolescents (12-16 years old). The positive detection rate of psychosocial-behavioral problems were 13.0% (900/6 906) totally, 9.6% (344/3 592) in boys and 16.8% (556/3 314) in girls respectively, and 7.3%(142/1 946) in boys aged 6-11, 14.0%(235/1 680) in girls aged 6-11, 12.3%(202/1 646) in boys aged 12-16, 19.6%(321/1 634) in girls aged 12-16 respectively. There were significant differences between the psychological problems group and the non-psychological problems group in gender, parent-offspring conflict, number of close friends, family income change, sedentary time, homework time, screen exposure time, physical activity, dietary problems (χ²=78.851, 285.264, 52.839, 26.284, 22.778, 11.024, 10.688, 36.814, 70.982, all P <0.01). The most common symptoms in boys aged 6-11 years were compulsive activity, schizoid and depression, in girls aged 6-11 years were schizoid/compulsive activity, hyperactivity and social withdrawal, in boys aged 12-16 years were hyperactivity, compulsive activity and aggressive behavior, and in girls aged 12-16 years were schizoid, anxiety/compulsive activity and depression/withdrawal, respectively. After graded multivariable adjustment, besides the common risk factors, homework time and online study time were the risk factors of 6-11 years old groups [boys OR (95% CI ): 1.750 (1.32-2.32), 1.214(1.00-1.47), girls: 1.579(1.25-1.99), 1.222(1.05-1.42), all P <0.05], videogames time were the risk factors of 12-16 years old groups [ boys: 2.237 (1.60-3.13), girls: 1.272 (1.00-1.61), all P <0.05]. Conclusions: Some children and adolescents may have psychological and behavioral problems during long-term home-schooling. The psychological and behavioral manifestations differed in age and gender subgroups, which deserve special attention in each subgroups. Schools, families and specialists should actively provide precise psychological support and comprehensive intervention strategies according to special features and risk factors.

Objective: To test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of parenting sense of competence scale (PSOC) in Chinese mothers of preschool children, and to explore the perception of preschool children's mothers on their own parenting skills and their comfort of being a parent in Yanqing District of Beijing., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sample in 1 384 preschool children's mothers in Yanqing District of Beijing. SPSS 21.0 and Mplus 7.4 software were used for statistical analysis to test the structural validity, criterion related validity, internal consistency and split half reliability of the scale, and to analyze the score of the scale and its influencing factors., Results: The PSOC had good reliability and validity. Exploratory factor analysis showed that each item of the PSOC had more than 0.4 factor loading in efficacy factor or satisfaction factor, and there was no double load phenomenon. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the factor loadings ranged from 0.212 to 0.843 in efficacy factor and satisfaction factor, respectively. The goodness of fit test showed that all the fitting indexes were within the acceptable range, and the correlation between the effectiveness subscale and the satisfaction subscale was high. The Cronbach's α coefficient of the whole scale, the efficacy subscale and the satisfaction subscale were 0.872, 0.802, and 0.874, respectively. The Spearman-Brown coefficient of PSOC was 0.851. The average score of the whole scale, the efficacy subscale, and the satisfaction subscale were 72.33±11.31, 35.54±5.91, and 36.79±7.11, respectively, and the score of parenting competence in Chinese mothers of preschool children was influenced by the mother's educational level and the annual income of her family., Conclusion: The PSOC has satisfactory reliability and validity in Chinese mothers of preschool children. It can be used as an evaluation instrument for measuring the parenting competency, self perceived efficacy and satisfaction in the mainland Chinese mothers of preschool children. The competency of preschool children's mothers in Yanqing District of Beijing is very good, which may be related to the higher education level of the mothers and the higher annual income of their families in this study.

Objective: To characterize the epidemiology of severe hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in China from 2008 to 2018 and provide evidence for the prevention and control of severe HFMD. Methods: The incidence data of severe HFMD cases from 2008 to 2018 were collected from the National Notifiable Infectious Diseases Reporting System of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Descriptive epidemiological methods were used to analyze distributions, pathogen constituent and change of severe HFMD. Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the trends of severity rate, proportion of severe cases and severe fatality rate. Results: From 2008 to 2018, a total of 157 065 cases of severe HFMD were reported in China, with an average annual case-severity rate of 1.05/100 000, a severe case proportion of 0.76 % and a severity-fatality rate of 2.34 % . The severity rate and the proportion of severe cases showed a downward trend after 2010, and severe fatality rate decreased significantly after 2014. The severe cases mainly occurred in infants aged ≤3 years (91.47 % ), more boys were affected than girls (1.78∶1). The median age of severe HFMD cases caused by EV-A71 was highest (1.99 years) and increased year by year, other enterovirus infection cases accounted for a higher proportion in infants aged ≤1 year (66.56 % ). The incidence peak occurred during April-July, other enteroviruses replaced EV-A71 as the predominant serotype in 2018 (61.97 % ). The incidence of severe HFMD were high in some provinces in southwestern, central and eastern China. Conclusion: The overall severity rate, proportion of severe cases and severe fatality rate of HFMD in the mainland of China have shown a downward trend. The predominant pathogen in some provinces has changed from EV-A71 to other enteroviruses. It is necessary to strengthen the prevention and control of HFMD in key population, high incidence seasons and areas and carry out the surveillance of various pathogens of HFMD.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between fat mass and obesity associated ( FTO ) gene polymorphism and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and provide clues and basis for the study of GDM mechanism. Methods: The case group of GDM pregnant women who delivered at the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from March 1, 2012 to July 30, 2014 were selected, and matched the control group among non-GDM pregnant women by age, gestational age and residential address, and 324 cases and 318 controls were finally included. DNA was extracted and genotyped, and min P test and unconditional logistic regression model were used to estimate the relationship between FTO gene polymorphism and GDM. Results: At gene level, we did not find the association between FTO and the risk of GDM ( P >0.05). After adjusted for family history of diabetes, pre-pregnancy body mass index and multiple comparisons using false discovery rate method, unconditional logistic regression analysis showed that pregnant women who carried the rs11075995 TT genotype ( OR =0.59, 95 %CI : 0.35-0.89), rs3826169 GG genotype ( OR =0.59, 95 %CI : 0.35-0.88), and rs74245270 GA genotype ( OR =0.69, 95 %CI : 0.49-0.98), GA or AA genotype( OR =0.70, 95 %CI : 0.50-0.97) had reduced risk of GDM. However, pregnant women who carried the rs74018601 GA genotype ( OR =1.51, 95 %CI : 1.07-2.12), GA or AA genotype ( OR =1.46, 95 %CI : 1.06-2.02), rs7205009 AA genotype ( OR =1.83, 95 %CI : 1.18-2.86), GA or AA genotype ( OR =1.53, 95 %CI : 1.08-2.19), and rs9888758 AG genotype ( OR =1.43, 95 %CI : 1.02-2.00) had elevated risk of GDM. Conclusion: The polymorphisms of FTO gene rs11075995,rs3826169, rs74245270, rs74018601, rs7205009 and rs9888758 were associated with the risk of GDM.

Objective: To understand the characteristics and explore the influencing factors of HBsAg positivity in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) clinic patients. Methods: A face to face interview and medical record review were conducted in 1 040 patients at three MMT clinics in Guangxi from September to November in 2014. The questionnaire information included general demographic characteristics, drug use history, MMT status, sexual behaviors, and health status, etc . Blood samples were collected from the patients at the same time for the detections of the level of HBsAg, anti-HBs and anti-HCV. By using χ (2) test, unconditional logistic regression model and Bayesian network model the influencing factors for HBsAg positivity in MMT clinic patients and the complex network relationship among these factors were explored. Results: A total of 1 031 MMT clinic patients were surveyed, the HBsAg positive rate was 11.35 % (117/1 031). The anti-HCV positive rate was 71.77 % (740/1 031), among the anti-HCV positive patients, the HBsAg positive rate was 10.27 % (76/740). After adjusting for the confounding factors, anti-HBs positive persons might not be HBsAg positive ( OR =0.05, 95 %CI : 0.03-0.09), and anti-HCV positive persons might not be HBsAg positive too ( OR =0.30, 95 %CI : 0.17-0.52) compared with anti-HBs negative and anti-HCV negative persons, respectively. The persons with family history of hepatitis B virus infection were more likely to be HBsAg positive compared those with no such family history ( OR =5.30, 95 %CI : 2.68-10.52). Bayesian network model analysis results showed that family history of hepatitis B virus infection and anti-HBs were directly related with HBsAg positivity. Anti-HCV, intravenous drug use in the past three months and other drug using during treatment were indirectly related with HBsAg positivity. Conclusions: Anti-HBs, family history of hepatitis B virus infection, anti-HCV, intravenous drug use in past three months and other drug use during treatment were related with the HBsAg positivity in MMT clinic patients. So, it is necessary to enhance health education, improve health awareness and decrease high risk behaviors to reduce the rate of HBV infection.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between the incidence of bacterial dysentery and related meteorological, environmental and socio-economic factors in parts of southwest China, under the geodetector. Methods: Incidence data on bacillary dysentery from 2005 to 2014 was collected from the China infectious disease reporting system and meteorological, terrain environment and socio-economic related data were used for statistical analysis with geodetector also used, in Sichuan province, Yunnan province and the Tibet autonomous region (southwest China). Results: Through geodetector model, results showed that the elevation maximum value of power of determinant ( PD ) ( PD =0.308), ethnicity ( PD =0.260), followed by summer mean temperature, topography, elevation standard deviation, slope, population density were noticed. The maximum value of PD of summer average relative humidity, summer average precipitation, and regional GDP were all less than 0.200. In the ecological detector model, value of PD appeared significantly different from multiple factors such as summer average precipitation, regional GDP, average altitude, elevation standard deviation, slope, terrain and ethnicity ( P <0.05). In the interactive detector model, after the spatial interaction, factors as: value on PD of summer average relative humidity, population density and regional GDP were larger than the value on the sum of PD of two factors with nonlinear superposition enhancing trend. Results from the risk zone detection showed that areas of moderate average summer temperature, low average precipitation, moderate average summer relative humidity, high average altitude, large elevation standard deviation, high slope, mountain topography, Tibeto-Burmese of ethnicity, low population density, low regional GDP were all related to the high incidence rates of bacterial dysentery. Conclusions: Meteorological conditions and topography environments were related to the bacterial dysentery in southwest China, socio-economic behaviors depends on the level of economic development and sanitary conditions etc . were all directing influencing the transmission and incidence of bacterial dysentery. For developing a better intervention programs on bacillary dysentery, socio-economic means should be used for the control of bacillary dysentery, in the region.

Abstract: Objective To analyze the genetic phenotypes of Y-chromosome STR and SNP in Han male population of Wujiang area, Suzhou City and explore the genetic structure of population of Wujiang area for further examination of regional-specific Y-SNP genetic markers ancestor haplogroups. Methods Blood samples of 472 Wujiang area Han males were randomly collected and genotyped by Yfiler TM Plus PCR Amplification Kit. The allele frequencies and haplotype frequencies of each locus were obtained using the direct calculation method. Y-SNP haplogroups of each sample were estimated using Y-Predictor software and verified through experiments by amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction （ARMS-PCR）. Results A total of 453 haplotypes were found in the 27 Y-STR genetic markers in 472 Han males of Wujiang area. The haplotype diversity （HD） was 0.997 696 93, among which, the highest gene diversity （GD） value was DYF387S1a/b （GD=0.953 1） and the lowest was DYS438 （GD=0.321 8）. Based on genotyping data of 27 Y-STRs and 472 samples, 132 haplogroups from C, D, N, O and Q, etc downstream Y-SNP haplogroups were estimated and then verified through experiments. Conclusion This study is based on Y-chromosome STR haplotypes, and predicts Y-SNP haplogroups by Y-Predictor software, then uses ARMS-PCR to verify. Objective: To investigate the relations between dietary intake during pregnancy and the incidence of their babies with small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: Data on demographics, dietary intake of protein, fat, and carbohydrates of the pregnant mothers during the first, second and third trimester, were collected. Information related to birth weight and gestational age of the infants were also gathered. A total of 8 102 women, who delivered their babies at the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from March 2012 to September 2016, were enrolled in this project. Among them, 961 mothers had infants with SGA but the other 7 141 of them having normal infants. Unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze the effect of dietary nutrient intake on SGA the first, second and third trimester. Results: We found that low dietary intake of protein during the first trimester and following trimesters during pregnancy were positively associated with higher risk of SGA ( OR =1.534, 95 %CI : 1.217-1.934; OR =1.268, 95 %CI : 1.005-1.599; OR =1.310, 95 %CI : 1.036-1.655). When adjusting for maternal pre-pregnancy BMI, we found that when mothers were with a pre-pregnancy BMI less than 18.5 or with low maternal intake of protein during the first trimester, positive association with higher risk of SGA ( OR =1.872, 95 %CI : 1.033-3.395; OR =1.754, 95 %CI : 1.125-2.734), was noticed. However, for mothers with a pre-pregnancy BMI between 18.5 and 24.0 or with low protein intake during the first trimester, significant association with higher risk of SGA ( OR =1.465, 95 %CI : 1.089-1.972) was found. Conclusions: Through our observation, maternal dietary intake during pregnancy seemed to be associated with the risk of SGA but the effects of dietary intake were different, according to the BMI of pre-pregnancy population. Early pregnancy appeares as the key period for dietary intake which may influence the SGA.

Objective: To explore the effect of ambient fine particulate matters (PM(2.5)) and temperature interaction on schizophrenia admission. Methods: All admission data were retrieved from the Psychiatric Hospital and Municipal Hospital of TongLing from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017. Daily air pollution and meteorological data were collected from the Tongling Environmental Protection Agency and Meteorological Bureau, respectively. A distributed lag non-linear model combined with the generalized additive model were applied to explore the effects of PM(2.5), multi-pollutants, and the interaction between temperature and PM(2.5) on schizophrenia admission. The stratification of temperature was divided by three criteria. The low temperature layer was defined as < P (5) or < P (10) or < P (20); P (5)- P (95) or P (10)- P (90) or P (20)- P (80) was defined as the middle temperature layer; > P (95) or > P (90) or > P (80) was defined as the high temperature layer. Results: From 2014 to 2017, 6 642 patients were admitted for schizophrenia in Tongling, and the median of PM(2.5) and temperature were 47.0 μg/m(3) and 17.5 ℃, respectively. The median concentration of PM(2.5) ( P (50)) was taken as a reference. When the exposure concentration of PM(2.5) was P (90), the lagged effect appeared in the first day with RR= 1.03 (95 %CI : 1.00-1.07) and reached the maximum in the fifth day with RR= 1.16 (95 %CI : 1.13-1.19). In the multi-pollutant models, it was found that the simultaneous inclusion of PM(2.5) and NO(2) had higher risk of schizophrenia admission, with the RR= 1.18 (95 %CI : 1.15-1.22), P< 0.001. The risk of schizophrenia admission caused by PM(2.5) exposure at high temperature was greatest under the three temperature stratification standards, which were 12.1% (8.5%-15.7%), 9.7% (6.9%-12.6%) and 17.1% (11.6%-22.8%), all P values <0.001. Conclusion: With the increase of PM(2.5) concentration, the risk of schizophrenia admission is increased, and the risk effect of PM(2.5) is stronger at high temperature.

Objective: To investigate the association between periconceptional folic acid supplementation and small for gestational age (SGA) birth based on maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and provide evidence for the development of comprehensive prevention programs on SGA birth. Methods: Between March, 2012 and September, 2016, a total of 8 523 pregnant women delivering in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University were surveyed to collect the information about their demographic characteristics, folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy and about their infants. Among their infants, 1 066 were small for gestational age (case group), 7 457 were appropriate for gestational age (AGA) (control group). Unconditional logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between periconceptional folic acid supplementation and SGA birth in the context of different pre-pregnancy BMI. Results: The overall incidence of SGA birth was 12.51 % (1 066/8 523). After adjusting the confounding factors, pre-pregnancy BMI<18.5 kg/m(2) was a risk factor for SGA birth ( OR =1.22, 95 %CI : 1.01-1.47), pre-pregnancy BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2) was associated with a reduced risk of SGA birth ( OR =0.81, 95 %CI :0.68-0.97). After adjusting confounding factors, periconceptional folic acid supplementation was a protective factor for SGA birth ( OR =0.82, 95 %CI : 0.68-0.98). After stratified by pre-pregnancy BMI, periconceptional folic acid supplementation was associated with the reduced risk of SGA birth in overweight group (24.0 kg/m(2)≤BMI<28.0 kg/m(2)) with OR of 0.55 (95 %CI : 0.36-0.85). No significant association was observed in other groups. When examined by folic acid supplement type, periconceptional single folic acid supplementation (400 μg per tablet) was a protective factor for SGA birth ( OR =0.82, 95 %CI : 0.69-0.99). After stratified by pre-pregnancy BMI, periconceptional single folic acid supplementation (400 μg per tablet) was associated with the reduced risk of SGA birth in overweight groups ( OR =0.56, 95 %CI : 0.36-0.86). No association was observed between periconceptional folic acid containing multivitamin supplementation and SGA birth. Conclusions: Periconceptional folic acid supplementation (400 μg) was associated with reduced risk of SGA birth in women with pre-pregnancy BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2) and<28.0 kg/m(2). No association between folic acid supplementation and SGA was observed in other groups. This study suggests that pre-pregnancy BMI might modify the influence of folic acid supplementation on the risk of SGA birth.

Since the winter season of 2013, a number of persistent haze-fog events have occurred in central-eastern China. Continuous measurements of the chemical and physical properties of PM1 at a regional background station in the Yangtze River Delta area of China from 16 Nov. to 18 Dec., 2013 revealed several haze-fog events, among which a heavy haze-fog event occurred between 6 Dec. and 8 Dec. The mean concentration of PM1 was 212μgm(-3) in the heavy haze-fog period, which was about 10 times higher than on clean days and featured a peak mass concentration that reached 298μgm(-3). Organics were the largest contributor to the dramatic rise of PM1 on heavy haze-fog days (average mass concentration of 86μgm(-3)), followed by nitrate (58μgm(-3)), sulfate (35μgm(-3)), ammonium (29μgm(-3)), and chloride (4.0μgm(-3)). Nitrate exhibited the largest increase (~20 factors), associated with a significant increase in NOx. This was mainly attributable to increased coal combustion emissions, relative to motor vehicle emissions, and was caused by short-distance pollutant transport within surrounding areas. Low-volatility oxidized organic aerosols (OA) (LV-OOA) and biomass-burning OA (BBOA) also increased sharply on heavy haze-fog days, exhibiting an enhanced oxidation capacity of the atmosphere and increased emissions from biomass burning. The strengthening of the oxidation capacity during the heavy pollution episode, along with lower solar radiation, was probably due to increased biomass burning, which were important precursors of O3. The prevailing meteorological conditions, including low wind and high relative humidity, and short distance transported gaseous and particulate matter surrounding of the sampling site, coincided with the increased pollutant concentrations mainly from biomass-burning mentioned above to cause the persistent haze-fog event in the YRD area., (Copyright © 2015. Ischemic stroke (IS) is a multifactorial disorder, and genetic factors act as important contributors to its onset and progression. Inflammation is a key event that is closely associated with the pathophysiology of IS. The association of genetic polymorphisms of inflammatory cytokines with IS remains poorly understood. We investigated the relationship between the variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) for IL-4, which is an important biomarker of inflammation, and the risk of IS. To assess the nature of the VNTR polymorphism in IL-4 and identify any links with IS, we recruited 200 subjects from a unique population that has 60% European and 40% East Asian ancestry. The subjects comprised 100 IS patients diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging within 24 h of symptom onset and 100 age-, gender- and ethnicity-matched normal healthy controls. VNTR was identified using high-performance capillary electrophoresis with specially designed tailed primers. The IL-4 VNTR polymorphism was significantly associated with IS after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors (OR = 0.571, 95%CI = 0.330-0.949, P < 0.05). Our data indicate that IL-4 VNTR polymorphism may affect susceptibility to IS in the Chinese Uyghur population. Moreover, total cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, waist-to-hip ratio, hypertension, history of heart diseases, and negative events may increase the risk of IS, with a trend for HDL to be a protective factor for IS in the Uyghur population.

Little is known about the risk factors associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) intrauterine transmission among HBsAg-positive mothers. We conducted a study in Taiyuan, China, including 1133 HBsAg-positive mothers and their babies. A total of 101 neonates had HBsAg and/or HBV DNA positive with an intrauterine transmission rate of 8.9%. Maternal menstrual irregularity (OR = 4.95, 95% CI: 1.71, 14.33) and severe nausea during the first trimester (OR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.11, 3.09) were associated with an increased risk of intrauterine transmission, while caesarean delivery (OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.20, 0.51) was associated with a decreased risk after adjusting for potential confounders. Maternal HBeAg positive was a strong independent predictor for intrauterine transmission (OR = 2.56, 95% CI: 1.54, 4.27). A positive association between maternal HBV DNA levels and intrauterine transmission was suggested. Maternal HBIG administration during pregnancy, family history of HBV infection and premature rupture of membranes was not associated with the risk of intrauterine transmission. The study confirmed that maternal HBeAg positive was a risk factor and caesarean delivery was a protective factor for intrauterine transmission. Saccharum spontaneum is a wild sugarcane species that is native to and widely distributed in China. It has been extensively used in sugarcane breeding programs, and is being tested for the development of bioenergy cultivars. In order to provide basic information for the exploitation of this species, we analyzed genetic variation among and within native S. spontaneum populations collected from Sichuan, China. Eighty plants from nine native populations were sampled. Twenty-one sequence-related amplified polymorphism primer pairs generated 235 clearly scorable bands, of which 185 were polymorphic (78.7%). Nei's genetic diversity was 0.2801 and Shannon's information index was 0.4155 across the populations. Genetic diversity parameters, G(ST) value (0.2088) and N(m) value (1.8944), showed that the genetic variation within populations was greater than that among populations. In the cluster analysis, one major grouping was formed by populations from Ya'an and another one by populations from Sichuan basin; a population from Baoxing formed a single cluster. In order to fully comprehend the genetic diversity of cold-tolerant local germplasm in this species, germplasm should be collected from the heterogeneous environments along the northern regions of this species' distribution. The germplasm that we collected should be a valuable resource for Saccharum breeding.

Male and female nectar robbers may show significantly different behaviour on host plants and thus have different impacts on reproductive fitness of the plants. A 4-year study in natural populations of Glechoma longituba has shown that male carpenter bees (Xylocopa sinensis) are responsible for most of the nectar robbing from these flowers, while female bees account for little nectar robbing, demonstrating distinct behavioural differentiation between male and female bees in visiting flowers. The smaller male bee spends less time visiting a single flower than the larger female bee, consequently, the male bee is capable of visiting more flowers per unit time and has a higher foraging efficiency. Moreover, the robbing behaviour of female carpenter bees is more destructive and affects flower structures (ovules and nectaries) and floral life-span more than that of the male bee. According to the energy trade-off hypothesis, the net energy gain for male bees during nectar robbing greatly surpasses energy payout (17.72 versus 2.43 J), while the female bee net energy gain is barely adequate to meet energy payout per unit time (3.78 versus 2.39 J). The differences in net energy gain for male and female bees per unit time in nectar robbing are the likely cause of observed behavioural differences between the sexes. Whether adjuvant chemotherapy increases survival of oesophageal cancer patients has been widely debated. The present study used meta-analysis software to combine data from six studies up to July 2007 that were found and selected as suitable, comprising a total of 1001 oesophageal cancer patients. The results indicated that adjuvant chemotherapy did not significantly improve outcome in oesophageal cancer patients. A trend towards improved outcome from adjuvant chemotherapy was found in lymph node-positive patients, but did not reach significance. In our own study including 270 oesophageal cancer patients, adjuvant chemotherapy did not improve overall patient survival, but did improve survival for patients with metastases in cervical and/or celiac lymph nodes (stage IVa). Although our study had the largest patient sample, more prospective clinical trials with large numbers of patients are necessary to confirm the value of adjuvant chemotherapy in stage IVa patients.

This study investigated the relationship between the delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALAD) isozymes and the blood lead levels of Chinese children. The purpose of this study was to determine the precise ALAD genotyping in Chinese children and identify the contribution of the ALAD genotype to the body lead burden. Blood samples were obtained from 109 boys and 120 girls. These children were 6-10 years old and from a single primary school. Both the school and their homes were within a community in which a large smelter was located. An environmental questionnaire was obtained for each subject, and blood lead levels and ALAD isozyme phenotype were analyzed in a double-blinded fashion. The blood lead levels of 229 children ranged from 4.5 to 26.4 microg/dl; the mean was 10.3 microg/dl and the standard deviation was 3.3 microg/dl. The gene distribution of the ALAD isozyme phenotypes in these environmentally exposed children was ALAD 1-1 (92%), ALAD 1-2, (8%), and ALAD 2-2 (0%). The mean blood level of the environmentally exposed children, who were homozygous for the ALAD1 allele, was 9.7 microg/dl; the mean for those who were heterozygous for the ALAD2 allele was 11.7 microg/dl. Using the t test, the means of the groups were different at the level of t=2.2058, P<0.05. Step-wise regression and multiple analyses of covariance were employed to control the confounders to measuring the independent contribution of the ALAD genotype on blood lead levels. After controlling the confounders, the contribution of the ALAD genotype to the blood lead level was greater and still statistically significant (F=7.3201, P<0.01). These results indicate that individuals carrying the ALAD2 allele are more likely to have sustained increases in blood lead levels when exposed to a lead-contaminated environment.

All low differentiated or anaplastic forms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) carry multiple copies of EBV-DNA and express EBNA1. The major membrane protein, LMP1, is only expressed in 65% of the tumours. The physiological function of LMP1 in the viral life cycle is unknown, but it has been shown to transform established rodent fibroblasts and immortalised human keratinocytes in vitro, and to increase the likelihood of a malignant transformation. We studied 74 cases collected from the Shanghai and Guanzhou areas in China. LMP1 expression was assessed in tumour biopsies by immunoblotting. Clinical and follow-up data were evaluated according to the classification of WHO. The laboratory and the clinical data were assembled in a mutually independent double blind fashion. Our findings indicate that the LMP1-positive tumours grew faster and more expansively than LMP1-negative tumours, but nevertheless had a better prognosis. LMP1-negative tumours recurred at a higher frequency, and showed an increased tendency to metastasise.

To evaluate the role of neurobehavioural factors in the aetiology of recurrent automobile accidents, we administered the Revised Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-R), the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and choice and simple reaction time tests to 31 accident-prone automobile drivers. These drivers who had caused three or more traffic accidents during the years 1980-1984, were selected from records of 2723 traffic accidents registered by Hefei Traffic Police Department during the years 1980-1984. The same tests were administered to an equal number of sex- and age-matched control drivers who had no reported involvement in automobile accidents. None of the subjects had suffered from any neuropsychiatric illness or head injury. Comparisons between the two groups indicated that for accident-prone drivers scores on picture completion and block design subtests of the WAIS-R were significantly lowered (p less than 0.05); scores for neurosis extrovert behaviour and psychosis (EPQ) were significantly higher (p less than 0.05); and the number of errors in the choice reaction time test was significantly higher (p less than 0.01). It is suggested that accident-prone drivers have lower psychological performance, poorer judgement and a higher tendency than safe drivers to be neurotic, extrovert and psychotic.
