Background: The study evaluated the performance of the Mindray N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in a healthy population in China, focusing on creating a reference range for future clinical applications adjusted according to different demographics. Methods: The study measured NT-proBNP in 2277 healthy individuals. We analyzed age and sex-stratified data, performed precision, accuracy, linearitcvy, and detection limit studies, and evaluated method comparison and consistency between Roche and Mindray assays on 724 serum samples. We used Excel 2010, Medcalc, and GraphPad Prism 9. Results: In males, the 97.5th centile NT-proBNP concentration at age < 45, 45 to 54, 55 to 64, 65 to 74 and ≧ 75 were 89.4 ng/L, 126 ng/L, 206 ng/L, 386 ng/L and 522 ng/L, respectively. In females, the concentration of NT-proBNP at the same age was 132 ng/L, 229 ng/L, 262 ng/L, 297 ng/L and 807 ng/L, respectively. The repeatability precision coefficient of variation (CV%) for NT-proBNP was between 0.86 and 1.65 in analytical performance. In contrast, the reproducibility precision (CV%) for NT-proBNP was between 1.52 and 3.22, respectively. The study found a bias of accuracy of 3.73% in low-value samples (concentration: 148.69) and 7.31% in high-value samples (concentration: 1939.08). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of 125 ng/L were 96.6%, 92.3%, 84.2%, and 98.5%, respectively. In contrast, those of 300 ng/L were 94.0%, 98.2%, 95.7% and 97.5%, respectively. Conclusions: The Mindray NT-proBNP assay showed increased levels in both males and females with age, with higher levels in women. It performs well and aligns with manufacturer specifications. The effects of meteorological conditions on asthma in Haikou, a tropical city in China, are still unclear. This study aimed to determine the relationships between meteorological factors and the number of asthma hospital visits in Haikou. A Poisson generalized additive model combined with a distributed lag nonlinear model is used to model the nonlinear exposure–response relationship between the daily mean temperature and asthma hospital visits. The daily mean pressure and air quality are used as covariates and simultaneously control the mixed effects of holiday effects, weekend effects, and long-term trends. The results indicate that there is a significant statistical relationship between the daily mean temperature and asthma hospital visits, which shows an inverted J-shaped relationship. When the daily mean temperature is below the reference value (29.3 °C), the number of asthma patients increases considerably, and there is a marked lag in the prevalence of asthma. The longest lag is 9 days, and the most pronounced impact of the daily mean temperature on the number of asthma hospital visits can be found when the lag time is 1–4 days. When the daily mean temperature is 10 °C, the cumulative effect of the relative risk of asthma is 2.204, an increase of 120.4% (95% CI 1.294–3.755). If the daily mean temperature is below the 2.5th percentile value (14.8 °C), the relative risk significantly increases by more than 5.3% (95% CI 1.000–1.110), and the longest lasting impact time is 5 days. This indicates that increases in asthma hospital visits in Haikou, China, are significantly correlated with low-temperature weather. We suggest that preventive measures for asthma should take low-temperature weather into account. As the mainstay of healthcare, the job satisfaction of medical staff deserves attention. This study aimed to explore the correlation between the perception of the high-performance work system (P-HPWS) and job satisfaction of medical staff in public hospitals and to further investigate the mediating effect of self-efficacy. From November 2019 to January 2020, a cross-sectional survey on working doctors and nurses was conducted in five tertiary public hospitals in China. A total of 520 participants were surveyed. The P-HPWS, job satisfaction, and self-efficacy were assessed using the 25-item self-administered scale, six-item job satisfaction questionnaire, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale, respectively. Linear regression and mediation effects models were used to identify the associations between primary variables. The results showed a significant positive correlation between P-HPWS and job satisfaction (P < 0.01), while self-efficacy played a mediating role between P-HPWS and job satisfaction. This finding reveals the benefits of improving employees' P-HPWS and self-efficacy on their job satisfaction, and that hospitals can improve their management systems by implementing and refining HPWS. China has implemented a series of ecological engineering projects to help achieve the 2060 carbon neutrality target. However, the lack of quantitative research on ecological engineering and the contribution of climate change to terrestrial carbon sinks limits this goal. This study uses robust statistical models combined with multiple terrestrial biosphere models to quantify the impact of China's ecological engineering on terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink trends and their differences according to the difference between reality and nonpractice assumptions. The main conclusions include the following: (1) since 1901, 84% of terrestrial ecosystem carbon sinks in China have shown an increasing trend, and approximately 45% of regional carbon sinks have increased by more than 0.1 g C/m2 every 10 years. (2) Considering the impact of human activities and the implementation of ecological engineering in China, approximately 56% of carbon sinks have improved, and approximately 10% of the regions whose carbon sink growth exceeds 50 g C m−2 yr−1 are mainly in the southeast coastal of China. (3) The carbon sequestration potential and effect of the Sanjiangyuan ecological protection and construction project are better than others, at 1.26 g C m−2 yr−1 and 14.13%, respectively. The Beijing–Tianjin sandstorm source comprehensive control project helps alleviate the reduction in carbon sinks, while the southwest karst rocky desertification comprehensive control project may aggravate the reduction in carbon sinks. This study clarifies the potential of China's different ecological engineering to increase carbon sink potential, and distinguishes and quantifies the contribution of climate and human activity factors to it, which is of great significance to the system management optimization scheme of terrestrial ecosystems and can effectively serve the national carbon neutral strategy. Background: The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the "sensitive area" of climate change, and also the "driver" and "amplifier" of global change. The response and feedback of its carbon dynamics to climate change will significantly affect the content of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. However, due to the unique geographical environment characteristics of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, there is still much controversy about its carbon source and sink estimation results. This study designed a new algorithm based on machine learning to improve the accuracy of carbon source and sink estimation by integrating multiple scale carbon input (net primary productivity, NPP) and output (soil heterotrophic respiration, Rh) information from remote sensing and ground observations. Then, we compared spatial patterns of NPP and Rh derived from the fusion of multiple scale data with other widely used products and tried to quantify the differences and uncertainties of carbon sink simulation at a regional scale. Results: Our results indicate that although global warming has potentially increased the Rh of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it will also increase its NPP, and its current performance is a net carbon sink area (carbon sink amount is 22.3 Tg C/year). Comparative analysis with other data products shows that CASA, GLOPEM, and MODIS products based on remote sensing underestimate the carbon input of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (30–70%), which is the main reason for the severe underestimation of the carbon sink level of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (even considered as a carbon source). Conclusions: The estimation of the carbon sink in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is of great significance for ensuring its ecological barrier function. It can deepen the community's understanding of the response to climate change in sensitive areas of the plateau. This study can provide an essential basis for assessing the uncertainty of carbon sources and sinks in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and also provide a scientific reference for helping China achieve "carbon neutrality" by 2060. To investigate the effect of lake water backflowing on the aquatic ecosystem in the estuary, surface water samples in the backflowing and unbackflowing areas were collected from one typical estuary of Lake Taihu, Xitiaoxi River. 16S rRNA sequencing and redundancy analysis were conducted to quantitatively elucidate the correlation between microbial community and water quality parameters. Results indicated lake water backflowing would affect the relative distribution of nitrogen species and increase the concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate, especially in the outlets of municipal sewage and agricultural drainage. For backflowing areas, more frequent water exchange could lower the seasonal fluctuation of the abundance and diversity of microbial community. RDA results showed crucial water quality parameters that greatly influence bacterial community were total organic carbon (TOC), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity (SAL), ammonia, nitrate, TN for backflowing areas, and TOC, TDS, SAL, ammonia, TN without nitrate for unbackflowing areas. Verrucomicrobia, Proteobacteria, Microcystis, and Arcobacter were dominant with 27.7%, 15.7%, 30.5%, and 25.7% contribution to the overall water quality in backflowing areas. Chloroflexi, Verrucomicrobia, Flavobacterium, and Nostocaceae were dominant with 25.0%, 18.4%, 22.3%, and 11.4% contribution to the overall water quality in unbackflowing areas. And lake water backflowing might mainly affect the amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism based on the metabolism function prediction. A better understanding of the spatiotemporal changes in water quality parameters and microbial community was obtained from this research to comprehensively assess the effect of lake water backflowing on the estuarine ecosystem. Changxing River, which is a typical inflow river into Taihu Lake and occurs severe algae invasion, is selected to study the effect of different pollution sources on the water quality and ecological system. Four types of pollution sources, including the estuary of Taihu Lake, discharge outlets of urban wastewater treatment plants, stormwater outlets, and nonpoint source agricultural drainage areas, were chosen, and next-generation sequencing and multivariate statistical analyses were used to characterize the microbial communities and reveal their relationship with water physicochemical properties. The results showed that ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were the main pollutants in Changxing River, especially at stormwater outlets. At the same time, the diversity of microbial communities was the highest in the summer, and dominant microbes included Proteobacteria (40.9%), Bacteroidetes (21.0%), and Euryarchaeota (6.1%). The results of BIOENV analysis showed that the major seasonal differences in the diversity of microbial community of Changxing river were explained by the combination of water temperature (T), air pressure (P), TP, and CODMn. From the perspective of different pollution types, relative abundances of Microcystis and Nostocaceae at the estuary of Taihu Lake were correlated positively with dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH, and relative abundances of Pseudomonas and Arcobacter were correlated positively with concentrations of TN and nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) at stormwater outlets. This study provided a reference for the impact of pollution types on river microbial ecosystem under complex hydrological conditions and guidance for the selection of restoration techniques for polluted rivers entering the important lake. The somatotopic representation of the body is a well-established organizational principle in the human brain. Classic invasive direct electrical stimulation for somatotopic mapping cannot be used to map the whole-body topographical representation of healthy individuals. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become an indispensable tool for the noninvasive investigation of somatotopic organization of the human brain using voluntary movement tasks. Unfortunately, body movements during fMRI scanning often cause large head motion artifacts. Consequently, there remains a lack of publicly accessible fMRI datasets for whole-body somatotopic mapping. Here, we present public high-resolution fMRI data to map the somatotopic organization based on motor movements in a large cohort of healthy adults (N = 62). In contrast to previous studies that were mostly designed to distinguish few body representations, most body parts are considered, including toe, ankle, leg, finger, wrist, forearm, upper arm, jaw, lip, tongue, and eyes. Moreover, the fMRI data are denoised by combining spatial independent component analysis with manual identification to clean artifacts from head motion associated with body movements. Objective: Fat, carbohydrates (mainly lactose) and protein in breast milk all provide indispensable benefits for the growth of newborns. The only source of nutrition in early infancy is breast milk, so the energy of breast milk is also crucial to the growth of infants. Some macronutrients composition in human breast milk varies greatly, which could affect its nutritional fulfillment to preterm infant needs. Therefore, rapid analysis of macronutrients (including lactose, fat and protein) and milk energy in breast milk is of clinical importance. This study compared the macronutrients results of a mid-infrared (MIR) analyzer and an ultrasound-based breast milk analyzer and unified the results by machine learning.Methods: This cross-sectional study included breastfeeding mothers aged 22-40 enrolled between November 2019 and February 2021. Breast milk samples (n = 546) were collected from 244 mothers (from Day 1 to Day 1086 postpartum). A MIR milk analyzer (BETTERREN Co., HMIR-05, SH, CHINA) and an ultrasonic milk analyzer (Honɡyanɡ Co,. HMA 3000, Hebei, CHINA) were used to determine the human milk macronutrient composition. A total of 465 samples completed the tests in both analyzers. The results of the ultrasonic method were mathematically converted using machine learning, while the Bland-Altman method was used to determine the limits of agreement (LOA) between the adjusted results of the ultrasonic method and MIR results.Results: The MIR and ultrasonic milk analyzer results were significantly different. The protein, fat, and energy determined using the MIR method were higher than those determined by the ultrasonic method, while lactose determined by the MIR method were lower (all p < 0.05). The consistency between the measured MIR and the adjusted ultrasound values was evaluated using the Bland-Altman analysis and the scatter diagram was generated to calculate the 95% LOA. After adjustments, 93.96% protein points (436 out of 465), 94.41% fat points (439 out of 465), 95.91% lactose points (446 out of 465) and 94.62% energy points (440 out of 465) were within the LOA range. The 95% LOA of protein, fat, lactose and energy were - 0.6 to 0.6 g/dl, -0.92 to 0.92 g/dl, -0.88 to 0.88 g/dl and - 40.2 to 40.4 kj/dl, respectively and clinically acceptable. The adjusted ultrasonic results were consistent with the MIR results, and LOA results were high (close to 95%).Conclusions: While the results of the breast milk rapid analyzers using the two methods varied significantly, they could still be considered comparable after data adjustments using linear regression algorithm in machine learning. In this study, we used hourly observations to investigate the cooling effect of summer rainfall on surface air temperature (Ta) in a subtropical area, Guangdong province, South China. Data were categorized step-by-step by rainfall system (convection, monsoon, and typhoon), daily rainfall amount, and relative humidity (RH) level. Moreover, the average hourly Ta variation due to solar radiation was removed from all observations before statistical analysis. The results showed that the linear relationship between hourly Ta variation and rainfall intensity did not exist. However, the cooling effect of rainfall on Ta variation was dominant. In addition, convective rainfall does cause a greater temperature drop than the other two rainfall systems. After further partitioning all samples by RH level preceding the rainfall, the relationship between hourly Ta variation and rainfall intensity became distinctive. When RH was below 70%, rainfall-induced cooling became more substantial and scaled linearly with event intensity, but when RH exceeded 70%, the rainfall cooling effect was generally restrained by the RH increase. A strong correlation between hourly Ta variation and RH level preceding the rainfall suggests the importance of RH on the rainfall cooling effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With its high cetane number and oxygen content, polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (PODE) can promote engine combustion and reduce particulate emissions, which has become a key research object of diesel surrogate fuel. This study further explores the effects of blending PODE on emission characteristics of a China VI diesel engine. Diesel/PODE blends with the PODE volume blending ratios of 10%, 20% and 30% have been experimentally investigated in a China VI heavy-duty diesel engine at 1900 rpm and four different loads. Furthermore, the effects of EGR rates (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) rates (0–20%) on combustion and emission characteristics have been also discussed at 1700 r/min engine speed and 50% engine load condition. An exhaust gas analyzer and a particle counter were used to collect NOx, CO and THC emissions and particulate number (PN) emissions. The results show that the CO and THC emissions can be significantly reduced with the increase in the mixing ratio of PODE. Additionally, the particle number concentration can be also reduced, especially at low and high loads. The NOx emissions can be improved by increasing EGR rates. Interestingly, there is a trade-off relationship between PN and NOx emissions. In general, blending PODE can effectively reduce NOx and PN emissions simultaneously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) cause considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in children. Unfortunately, there are limited multi-center data on common viral respiratory infections in south China.Methods: A total of 4403 nasal swabs were collected from children in 10 cities in Guangdong, China in 2019. Seven respiratory viruses, influenza A virus (IFA), influenza B virus (IFB), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenoviruses (ADV) and parainfluenza virus types 1-3 (PIV1, PIV2 and PIV3), were detected by direct immunofluorescence antibody assay. The personal information and clinical characteristics were recorded and analyzed.Results: The results showed that at least one virus was detected in 1099 (24.96 %) samples. The detection rates of RSV, IFA, ADV, PIV3, PIV1 and PIV2 were 7.13 % (314/4403), 5.31 % (234/4403), 4.02 % (177/4403), 3.04 % (134/4403), 1.70 % (75/4403) and 1.16 % (51/4403), respectively. The detection rate of RSV was highest in 0-6-month-old children at 18.18 % (106/583), while the detection rate of IFA was highest in 12-18-year-old children at 20.48 % (17/83). The total detection rates in winter and spring were 35.67 % (219/614) and 34.56 % (403/1166), higher than those in summer, 17.41 % (284/1631), and autumn, 19.46 % (193/992).Conclusions: RSV and IFA were the main respiratory viruses in children. With increasing age the detection rate of RSV decreased in children, but the trends for the detection rates of IFA and IFB were the opposite. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become the most severe global health issue. Abnormal liver functions are frequently reported in these patients. However, liver function abnormality was often overlooked during COVID-19 treatment, and data regarding liver functions after cure of COVID-19 is limited. This study aimed to reveal the changes of liver function tests (LFTs) during hospitalization, and its clinical significance in patients with COVID-19. Methods: In this retrospective, bi-center study, a total of 158 hospitalized patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in China were included from January 22nd, 2020 to February 20th, 2020. Clinical features, laboratory parameters including LFTs, and treatment data were collected and analyzed. LFTs included alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, and total bilirubin. Patients were considered with abnormal LFTs when any value of these tests was higher than upper limit of normal. Results: Of 158 patients with COVID-19, 67 (42.41%) patients had abnormal LFTs on admission and another 50 (31.65%) patients developed abnormal LFTs during hospitalization. The incidence of LFTs abnormality in severe COVID-19 cases was significantly higher than non-severe cases. All LFTs in COVID-19 patients were correlated with oxygenation index. There was no statistical difference in treatment between the patients with or without liver test abnormalities. By the time of discharge, there were still 64 (40.50%) patients with abnormal LFTs. Logistic regression analysis identified younger age, hypertension and low lymphocyte counts as independent risk factors for persistent abnormal LFTs during hospitalization. Conclusion: Liver function tests abnormality was common in COVID-19 patients and was more prevalent in severe cases than in non-severe cases. An important challenge facing rice production in China is to solve the problem of declining freshwater supply without affecting grain yield and quality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cultivation methods on the grain‐filling and chalk grains of Zhonghan 3 (Japonica) upland rice and Wuxiangjing 99–8 (Japonica) paddy rice. Both cultivars were cultivated in fields under three cultivation methods: continuous flooding (CF) as a control, bare dry cultivation (BC), and plastic film mulching dry cultivation (PFMC). Compared with CF, the yield of the upland rice decreased significantly, and the yield of paddy rice did not differ significantly under PFMC. The yields of both cultivars decreased significantly under BC. Superior and inferior grains of the two cultivars under PFMC had a greater mean grain‐filling rate (G) and a shorter active grain‐filling time (D). Under PFMC, the two cultivars had a higher export translocation rate of the matter from the stem and sheath and a slower decrease of the chlorophyll content in the flag leaves and nitrogen content in the plants after heading. Upland rice had a higher grain weight, and paddy rice had a lower grain weight compared to CF. The chalkiness of the two cultivars was significantly lower under dry cultivation than under CF. The correlation analysis showed that the percentage of chalky grains was negatively correlated with G and positively correlated with D, indicating that dry cultivation could improve the grain‐filling rate and appearance quality of the two cultivars. Abstract The self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc_PDSI) is developed within the frame of the PDSI model, but is considered to be more appropriate for global drought monitoring. The sc_PDSI can automatically calibrate itself at any location using dynamically computed values and can calculate evapotranspiration using the FAO-56 Penman–Monteith (P–M) equation. However, the correlation of the sc_PDSI(P–M) with some factors that drive drought, such as precipitation (P) and the reference evapotranspiration (ET 0), is still unclear in China. With the aim of solving this issue, we analyzed the correlation of the detrended sc_PDSI(P–M) with the detrended P and ET 0 on different timescales (one, three, six and 12 months) in China for the period 1951–2015. The results show that both the P and ET 0 are highly correlated with the sc_PDSI(P–M) on a 12-month timescale. On this timescale, the sc_PDSI(P–M) is more sensitive to P than to ET 0 on the national scale, except for northeastern China. Thus the sc_PDSI(P–M) may effectively fit the long-term variations in these drivers of drought, especially P. Accurately assessing the carbon sink and spatial distribution pattern of China's terrestrial ecosystems is of great significance to the implementation of climate change and carbon neutrality strategy. However, the views of various studies are still very controversial due to the differences in carbon sink estimation methods and data sources. In this study, vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) and ecosystem heterotrophic respiration (Rh) estimation models were constructed based on machine learning methods by fusing multisource data, such as remote sensing and ground observation data. The magnitude and spatial pattern of carbon sink in China from 2000 to 2018 were then revealed, and the carbon sink capacity of various ecosystems was quantitatively assessed. The main conclusions include the following: (1) The use of scale-matched carbon input and output data can help reduce the system error in carbon sink estimation. (2) China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink since the twenty-first century is approximately 0.458 Pg C/yr, which is equivalent to 22.72% of China's anthropogenic carbon emissions. (3) Deciduous forest has a higher carbon sink capacity than evergreen forest, while coniferous forest has a more stable carbon sink capacity than broad-leaved forest. This study aimed to investigate the impact of depressive symptoms and changes in depressive status on falls among middle-aged and older population in China. We used two waves of interview data (time 1 [T1] and time 2 [T2], 2 years from T1) from a nationally representative sample of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which included a total of 14,356 participants (male 6859; mean age: 59.5 ± 9.3 years). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item short form of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10). Participants were categorized into four groups based on changes in their CES-D-10 scores over a 2-year follow-up period. Self-reported falls were evaluated, and logistic regression models and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were employed to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and fallen. Participants who had experienced falls had higher CES-D-10 scores and were more likely to have depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms at T1 were significantly associated with falls during the follow-up period. After adjusting for covariables, increasing CES-D-10 scores were associated with higher adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for falling prevalence: 1.230 (95 % CI, 1.041–1.453), 1.579 (95 % CI, 1.331–1.873), 1.745 (95 % CI, 1.472–2.070), and 2.366 (95 % CI, 1.972–2.838). Participants who experienced depressive symptoms at either T1 or T2, as well as those with persistent depressive symptoms from T1 to T2, were both at higher risk for future falls. The worsening of depressive symptoms significantly increased the likelihood of falls. This study revealed a significant association between depressive symptoms and changes in depressive status with subsequent falls in older adults. Pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1), a variant of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), causes severe Newcastle disease (ND) in pigeons. However, there is no PPMV-1 vaccine available worldwide. In this study, a strain of PPMV-1 was isolated from outbreaks in a vaccinated racing pigeon (Columbia livia) loft in China, namely, PPMV-1/pigeon/Gansu/China/02/2020 (GS02). Experimental infection with GS02 showed mortality rates of 100% and 87.50% in 4- and 12-week-old pigeons, respectively, suggesting that GS02 is virulent and more sensitive to young pigeons. The whole genome of GS02 determined the fusion (F) protein possessing virulence cleavage site 112RRQKRF117. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that GS02 was a subgenotype VI.2.1.1.2.2 (VIk) of Class II NDV and more closely related to the JS/06/20/Pi (MW271791) strain, but it was far from the genetic distance from the commercial vaccine chicken-origin La Sota strain. Using inactivated GS02 as a vaccine candidate and inactivated vaccine La Sota to immunize the pigeons, both of them provided complete protection against GS02 challenge. The GS02 vaccine candidate induced higher antibody titers than the La Sota vaccine, and cross-reactivity testing showed antigenically slight differences between GS02 and La Sota. Furrow irrigation, which can be combined with fertilisation by dissolving solid fertilisers in irrigation water, is the most common practice in vineyards in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and drip irrigation and fertigation have been employed in some areas. These irrigation methods and their corresponding fertilisation schemes may affect nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from the soil. Therefore, it is important to use a model to simulate differences in N 2 O emissions and identify farmland management methods that limit N 2 O emissions. During the July–August 2012 and July–September 2013 growing seasons, the denitrification and decomposition (DNDC) model was tested against experimental N 2 O emissions data from vineyards in Yuquanying, Yongning, Yinchuan, Ningxia. After model validation, the simulated differences in emissions between furrow irrigation and drip irrigation were 9.86 ± 0.845 and 0.966 ± 0.464 kg ha −1 a −1 in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Thus, the emissions were reduced by approximately 72.5% and 52.4% in 2012 and 2013. In the regional simulation, the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of the annual N 2 O emission reductions reached 27,749,760 ± 5,489,160 kg CO 2 -equivalents after the vineyards in the Ningxia Autonomous Region were converted from furrow irrigation to drip irrigation. In conclusion, the DNDC model, which proved to be a powerful tool for addressing the efficacy of alternative management practices in vineyards, revealed that N 2 O emissions can be reduced by adopting drip irrigation systems rather than traditional furrow irrigation systems. Maize, rice, and wheat are the major staple food crops in China and are crucial components of national food security and economic development. The cultivation and production of these crops are expected to be affected by climate change and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2) concentration, and have drawn considerable public attention. The objective of this experiment was to understand the impact of future climate change (including increased temperature and changed precipitation patterns) and elevated CO 2 concentration on variations of crop yields in their suitable planting areas. We conducted a spatial grid-based analysis of maize, rice, and wheat yields using projections of future climate generated by a multi-model ensemble of global climate models for three representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) in suitable planting areas in China for the 2030s (2021–2040) and the 2050s (2041–2060). Suitable areas for the planting of maize, rice, and wheat under the high-emission scenarios migrated slightly northward over time. Yield of all three crops would be expected to remain stable or to slightly increase across China in the future. A possible reason for this result may be because the positive effects of increased precipitation and CO 2 offset the negative effect of increased temperature on crop yields, resulting in a much more appropriate growth environment and increased biomass accumulation and crop yield. In addition, this study also indicated that changes in crop yields were mainly driven by temperature and CO 2 factors. The potential effects of climate change and elevated CO 2 concentration on migration of planting areas and yield fluctuations for crops should be given greater attention in the future. Gross primary productivity is one of the most important indicators of ecosystem function, which is related to water conditions and shown high interannual variation. Due to the time-lag effect, not only the current water condition but also the previous water conditions (e.g., one year before) impact the gross primary productivity (GPP). Revealing the impacts of current and previous years' water status is currently a hot topic. In this study, we designed a series of water deficit scenarios based on the meteorological dataset of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) and then analysed the responses of the remote sensing-based moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) gross primary productivity (GPP) in China, from which the role of water deficit in time periods was evaluated. The results indicate that the impact of climate factors (i.e., water, temperature and radiation) on GPP has a high spatial heterogeneity and that water-limited regions that are primarily distributed in North and Northwestern China show a stronger water-GPP relationship than water-unlimited regions. The water deficit that occurred in different periods had a variable impact on GPP. Specifically, GPP was primarily controlled by the current year's water conditions in the water-limited regions, with the importance value of 52.8% (the percentage of Increased Mean Square Error, %IncMSE) and 3.8 (the mean decrease in node impurity, IncNodePurity), but at the same time, it was conditionally affected by the water status in the previous year, with the importance value of 20.4% (%IncMSE) and 0.6 (IncNodePurity). The role of water in previous years is multifarious, which depends on the water conditions of the current year. The results revealed by the scenarios indicate that the influence of water conditions in the previous year was not statistically significant when the water conditions of the current year were in a drought. In contrast, when the current year's water conditions were normal or wetter, the water conditions in the previous year (i.e., one-year time lag) were also important and the increase of GPP significantly depended on the water condition (p < 0.05). The diverse roles of water conditions in previous years on GPP and its non-ignorable time-lag effect revealed in this study imply that not only the current year's water condition but also its dynamic changes in previous years should be considered when predicting changes in GPP caused by climate change. City shrinkage characterized by population loss is a difficult issue challenging urban planning and regional development policy. China has been experiencing rapid urbanization over the past several decades. Although numerous studies have identified the characteristics and factors of urban expansion in China, city shrinkage has been widely ignored. This paper measured prefecture-level city shrinkage from the regional dimension based on the fourth (1990), fifth (2000) and sixth (2010) national census data in China. The spatiotemporal characteristics of shrinking cities were analyzed in different economic regions, and the relevant factors contributing to city shrinkage were explored based on the Pearson correlation coefficient. The results showed that the number of shrinking cities and the shrinking degree continuously increased from 1990 to 2010 in China. City shrinkage showed a significant positive correlation in space and was highly related to the regional economic level and population structure. Specifically, the aging population was a key factor responsible for city shrinkage, and a negative correlation was observed between the economic level and city shrinkage. These findings contribute to our understanding of the relationship between city shrinkage and economic development and provide important information for governments and planners formulating scientifically-based city development policies. Drought monitoring is a key topic in environmental monitoring and assessment although there is still a need to determine the correlation between drought monitoring indices and remote sensing products. We analyzed the correlation between the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc_PDSI), the Standardized Precipitation Index and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and terrestrial water storage monitored through the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) on a monthly timescale from 2002 to 2015 in China. As a consequence of anomalies in the soil water budget, the highly significant correlation between the sc_PDSI and the GRACE satellite-observed terrestrial water storage suggested that these two datasets are the most suitable for use in monitoring droughts. In comparing the three drought indices, the sc_PDSI was introduced as a means of drought monitoring in the Yangtze, Pearl, Huaihe, Southeast and Songhua River Basins, whereas the SPEI was found to be more applicable to other major river basins, such as the Inland River Basin. Studies have confirmed that perceived control is strongly negatively correlated with emotional distress. However, few studies have explored whether perceived stress plays a potential mediating role in this relationship and whether the association between perceived stress and emotional distress is moderated by psychological resources, such as self-esteem and social support. Furthermore, it is unclear whether there are sex differences in the moderating effects of psychological resources on emotional distress. A total of 951 healthy adults (51.84% females) from different regions of mainland China participated in the study and completed questionnaires in early December 2022, when prevention and control policies concerning COVID-19 in China underwent rapid change. Perceived control negatively correlated with emotional distress, and perceived stress mediated the association between perceived control and emotional distress. In addition, both internal (i.e., self-esteem) and external psychological resources (i.e., social support) moderated the association between perceived stress and emotional distress, and the positive correlation between perceived stress and emotional distress was higher in individuals with low social support (and self-esteem) than in those with high social support (and self-esteem). We found sex differences in the moderating roles of psychological resources. Specifically, self-esteem had a moderating effect on both men and women, whereas social support had a moderating effect only on women. Maize production in China is facing a multitude of challenges such as climate change, increasing demand, and limited cropland availability. Soil properties, beyond supporting crop growth and development, can play a critical role in buffering the impacts of climate crisis on crop yields. However, little information is known about such buffering capacities and their spatial distributions of soil properties in buffering the impacts of climate perturbations on maize yields in China's maize belt (CMB). The objective of this study was to identify the responses of different regions within the CMB to climate perturbations in terms of maize yields, as well as their spatial differences and magnitudes. Additionally, we aimed to quantify the capacities of soil properties in buffering the impacts of climate perturbations. We quantified the impacts of climate perturbations (climate fluctuations deviating from the mean state) on maize yields using the APSIM across the China's maize belt. We then used the random forest model to interpret the buffering effects of typical soil properties to the adverse impacts of climate perturbations. Our results reveal that temperature variability was the predominant climatic perturbation affecting maize yields, with rising temperature leading to significant yield losses in most regions. Perturbations in solar radiation and precipitation exhibited relatively stronger positive yield impacts only in areas with inadequate solar radiation and dry conditions, respectively. Notably, soil properties explained ∼40% to ∼70% of the spatial variations for the impacts of climate perturbations. Soils with high soil organic carbon content (SOC) can significantly reduce the negative impacts of temperature increase, highlighting the crucial buffering effect of SOC in response to global warming. Soil texture, field capacity and bulk density were also critical soil buffering properties for interpreting the spatial patterns of the impacts of climate perturbations. Our results underscore the importance of soil quality improvement to ensure stable food production, which is an effective strategy for enhancing agricultural system resilience amidst future climate crises. Crop yield is controlled by different environmental factors. Multi-source data for site-specific soils, climates, and remotely sensed vegetation indices are essential for yield prediction. Algorithms of data-model fusion for crop growth monitoring and yield prediction are complicated and need to be optimized to deal with model uncertainty. This study integrated multi-source environmental variables (e.g., satellite-based vegetation indices, climate data, and soil properties) into random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) models for wheat yield prediction in China. The performance of both RF and SVM models was investigated using different types of vegetation indices associated with other predictors. Relative importance and partial dependence analyses were used to identify the main predictors and their relationships with wheat yield. We found that using remotely sensed vegetation indices improved our model precision, and that near-infrared reflectance of terrestrial vegetation (NIRv) was slightly better than normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) in predicting yield. NIRv was better in detecting climate stress on crops, and could capture more information regarding crop growth and yield formation. Compared with the SVM model, the RF model with NIRv and other covariates had better performance in wheat yield prediction, with R2 and RMSE being 0.74 and 758 kg/ha respectively. We also found that NIRv from jointing to heading was the most important predictor in determining yield, followed by solar radiation (especially during tillering–heading), relative humidity (during planting–tillering), soil organic carbon, and wind speed (throughout the growing season). In addition, wheat yield exhibited threshold-like responses to most factors based on our RF model. These threshold values can help to better understand how different environmental factors limit wheat yield, which will provide useful information for climate-adaptive crop management. Abstract: Lotus root (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn), an aquatic vegetable in China, is widely consumed due to its unique sensory and nutritional properties. However, fresh lotus root tends to deteriorate during storage. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) on microbiological quality and physicochemical properties of lotus root. Lotus root was processed at HHP ranging from 300 to 600MPa for 2.5min to 25min. The inactivation curves of natural microorganisms in lotus root by HHP were well fitted with the Weibull model. According to the inactivation of microorganisms, lotus root was subjected to 400MPa for 10min, 500MPa for 5min and 600MPa for 2.5min. The changes of microbiological quality and physicochemical properties (color, texture, pH and yield) were analyzed during three months of storage at 4°C. The results showed that lotus root processed by 600MPa exhibited a better microbiological stability than those of other treatments. The total plate counts (TPC) in lotus root treated with thermal processing, 400 and 500MPa were 5.20, 5.12 and 4.36log10 CFU/g, respectively on 45th day. The growth of microorganisms caused the increase in △E, decrease in hardness and pH in other treatments. Treatments of 600MPa for 2.5min had little effect on color during storage. There were no significant changes in the L ⁎, a ⁎ and b ⁎ values (p >0.05). The hardness of lotus root treated with 600MPa decreased by 34.22% after 90days. The pH value of lotus root with 600-MPa treatment remained statistically constant during 90-day storage. After 90days, lotus root processed by 600MPa retained 88.04% of its weight. These results indicated that HHP at 600MPa for 2.5min was an efficient non-thermal alternative for extended shelf-life of lotus root. Industrial Relevance: As an interesting alternative to traditional processing method, high hydrostatic pressure processing has the potential to produce high quality foods. This research provides information of storage stability of lotus root after HHP and thermal processing. The available data are provided for the evaluation and application of HHP in lotus root, and criteria for commercial production of high quality lotus root with safety requirements could be established. Background: Research has widely indicated that the psychological distress experienced by infertile patients during fertility treatments may have a negative effect on the results of assisted reproduction. Although numerous studies have shown that psychological resilience and sleep quality are important influencing factors for psychological distress, the mediating mechanisms of psychological resilience in the relationship between sleep quality and psychological distress for Chinese women in particular remain unclear. Therefore, the current study investigates the association between sleep quality, resilience, and psychological distress in Chinese women with infertility and examines the mediating and moderating roles of resilience on the relationship between sleep quality and psychological distress., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 595 women with infertility who were undergoing IVF-ET were recruited at the Reproductive Medicine, Shandong University, from April to November 2019. Participants were instructed to complete four questionnaires, including a questionnaire about socio-demographic and clinical-related information, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), and the Kessler-10 (K10). Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted preliminarily to describe the relationships between sleep quality, resilience, and psychological distress. A mediation model and a moderated model were constructed and analyzed using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. The Johnson-Neyman (J-N) technique was then used to identify the regions of significance across the levels of moderator values., Results: Patients in the sample had a high prevalence of psychological distress (48.6%, K10 scores > 22), and mediation analysis indicated that resilience played a partially mediating role in the relationship between sleep quality and psychological distress (indict effect = 0.072, P < 0.001). Moderation analysis indicated that resilience also moderated the association between sleep quality and psychological distress., Conclusions: Resilience may play a key role in the relationship between sleep quality and psychological distress. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) in determining obesity in Chinese children aged 6-9 years, using the criteria of percentage of body fat (PBF) and body mass index z-scores (BMI-Z)., Methods: The cross-sectional study included 5365 children, aged 6-9 years, who participated in the project survey "Group prevention and treatment of obesity among students and school health promotion in Shanghai" from September 2007 to September 2009. Height, weight, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), TMI, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and PBF were recorded. Statistical analyses including Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, chi-square test, receiver operating characteristics curve, and kappa chi-square test were performed., Results: TMI for both sexes was relatively constant with increasing age, and statistically significant differences were not observed at some ages ( P > 0.05 at 6, 7, 8, and 9 years). WHtR showed subtle changes, while BMI and PBF increased significantly with age in boys and girls ( P < 0.01). Using BMI-Z criteria as the measure of general obesity, the results indicated that TMI cutoff values for 6-9 years were 14.60 kg/m 3 for boys and 14.84 kg/m 3 for girls ( P < 0.001). Green ecological development has become an inevitable choice to achieve sustainable urban development and carbon neutrality. This paper evaluates the level of green ecological city development in the Xin'an watershed as measured by green total factor productivity ( GTFP ), analyzes the direct and spatial effects of the Watershed Horizontal Ecological Compensation policy on GTFP , and further examines the moderating effect of the Research and Development ( R&D ) incentives, industrial structure, and income gap. This paper conducts difference-in-differences (DID) and spatial regression analysis on 27 cities from 2007 to 2019. The results show that GTFP progresses to varying degrees across cities over time, especially in the pilot cities. Crucially, the Watershed Horizontal Ecological Compensation policy significantly improved GTFP , although the effect was slight. Interestingly, the increase in GTFP in pilot cities that implemented the policy spatially suppressed the increase in GTFP in cities that did not implement the policy. Our evidence also shows that the positive effect of the policy is higher in regions with higher R&D incentives and industrial structure upgrading, which indicates that R&D incentives and industrial upgrading are crucial. In comparison, the income gap has not made the expected negative adjustment effect under the Chinese government's poverty alleviation policy. However, the positive policy effect is heterogeneous in the downstream and upstream pilot cities. The "forcing effect" of the policy on the downstream cities is more favorable than the "compensating effect" on the upstream cities. Therefore, policymakers should pay more attention to ensuring the effectiveness of the Watershed Horizontal Ecological Compensation policy in enhancing GTFP as a long-term strategy to guarantee the sustainability of green ecological development in Chinese cities.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of food on the pharmacokinetics of posaconazole suspension in pediatric patients with acute leukaemia and to recommend optimal dosing strategies. This single-site, prospective, open-label, observational study was conducted in 42 patients and included 186 plasma concentrations of posaconazole. Sparse data were analyzed using population pharmacokinetic modeling. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to predict the morning trough concentrations at steady-state with the proposed dose of 2-7 mg/kg three times daily (tid) or four times daily (qid) for bodyweights of 10-36 kg. The target concentrations were 700 ng/mL for prophylaxis and 1000 ng/mL for treatment. Dosage regimens with percentage of target attainment (PTA) ≥70% were recommended. A one-compartment model with allometric scaling adequately described the pharmacokinetic profile. The apparent clearance was 9.05 L/h (95% confidence interval [CI] 7.14-11.09) and the apparent volume of distribution was 283 L (95% CI 168-491) for a typical individual of 17.5 kg. The relative bioavailability with high-fat diet was as high as 1.95-fold compared with regular food. Following the intake of regular meals, 4 mg/kg qid was adequate with a PTA ≥ 71.8% for prophylaxis. A dosage of 6 mg/kg qid under a regular diet reached a PTA ≥ 73.4% for treatment. The recommended dosage of posaconazole for prophylaxis and treatment could be predicted by the pharmacokinetic model based on bodyweight and diet type in pediatric patients., (Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). As a valuable medicine food homology plant, Codonopsis Radix has been widely used in China. This study aimed to analyze the content of nine potentially toxic elements in three Codonopsis Radix varieties and evaluate their health risks to the human body. In this study, a total of 147 samples were collected from five provinces in China. The content of nine potentially toxic elements (Al, Mn, Cu, Cr, Ni, As, Pb, Cd, and Hg) were determined by ICP-MS. Results showed that the average contents of Al, Mn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Cd, and Hg were 486.81, 30.30, 5.59, 1.38, 1.24, 0.40, 0.20, 0.16, and 0.11 mg/kg, respectively. The Codonopsis tangshen Oliv. samples from Hubei showed the highest contents of eight elements (Al, Mn, Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Cd, and Hg) among three varieties, and the highest Cu level was found in Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannf. samples from Shanxi. The content of toxic elements in three Codonopsis Radix varieties showed significant differences (p < 0.05). LDA models facilitated the identification of three Codonopsis Radix varieties with a 91.2% classification score and 89.1% prediction score. Further, when Codonopsis Radix was used as food or medicine, both the hazard quotient values for single element and the hazard index values for nine elements (0.87 for food and 0.84 for medicine) were far below one. The carcinogenic risk values for Pb in Codonopsis Radix when used as food or medicine were 1.14 × 10 -6 and 5.51 × 10 -8 ; the values for As were 4.80 × 10 -5 and 4.98 × 10 -6 , respectively. It indicated that under the current consumption of Codonopsis Radix, the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks from these potentially toxic elements were acceptable for consumers., (© 2021. Development of bioenergy will be a key component for meeting increasing energy demands while mitigating global warming. With the intent of identifying current topics of major interest and development of research directions in the field of bioenergy under climate change, we conducted a bibliometric analysis and network analysis from a country perspective based on 3050 articles published since 1999 derived from the Scopus database. The results indicated that USA, UK, and Germany led other countries in terms of number of publications (1006, 366, and 280 articles, respectively) and h-index (greater than 50) in this research area. The USA has also produced a large number of articles in highly respected journals. Compared with developed countries, some developing countries (e.g., China, India, and Brazil) have a larger proportion of publications which are cited less than 10 times and researchers who have academic age of 1 year. The number of publications dealing with some of these research topics coming from developing countries has lagged behind the number of similar publications coming from developed countries. In spite of this, research on sustainable energy systems is still needed for developing countries to further establish feasible systems that can effectively promote global economic development and strengthen climate change mitigation efforts.

Metal-organic frameworks, an emerging class of porous material, have developed rapidly in recent years. In order to clarify the application of metal-organic frameworks in the field of environmental science, 1386 articles over the last 20 years were obtained from Scopus and analysed by the bibliometric method. And the collaboration between countries, institutions and authors and the co-occurrence of keywords were also conducted using VOSviewer. The results indicated that this area of research has entered a fast-developing stage. The number of articles published has grown from 7 articles in 1999 to 378 articles in 2018. The most productive country was China with 626 articles published. The most productive institution was the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the most productive author was Jhung SH from Kyungpook National University of South Korea. Although metal-organic frameworks have been widely used in adsorption and catalytic degradation of pollutants from the environment, the removal mechanism of pollutants by MOFs, the stability improvement and the cost reduction of metal-organic frameworks are still the main challenges for their practical applications.

Background: In 2014, a serious dengue outbreak occurred in Guangzhou, South China. In this study, the clinical and laboratory characteristics of dengue fever (DF) group and other febrile illnesses (OFI) group in Guangzhou were described., Methods: Clinical and laboratory data collected by studying 1,792 patients from Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University during 2014 and 2018. Laboratory data was analyzed by SPSS 22.0 statistical software including Full blood counts (SYSMEX XE-5000), Laboratory Biochemical tests (Roche Cobas 8000), Dengue virus RNA (RT-PCR-Fluorescence Probing) and Dengue IgG/IgM Antibody (Colloidal Gold), Dengue Virus NS1 (ELISA)., Results: In the DF group and OFI group, gender ratios were 1.08:1 (male/female, P>0.05) and 1.45:1 (male/female, P<0.05). Adults aged 25-34 years old (29.4%) with the main peak appeared in the DF group, and the same main peak appeared in the OFI group: 25-34 years old (25.13%). Patients were from Medical emergency (41.2% DF group, 29.4% OFI group). The distribution of fever days before treatment was mainly focused within 5 days, with a main peak in the 2 fever days before treatment (24.6%) in the DF group and the main peak in 1 fever day before treatment (46.9%) in OFI group. The major symptoms of the DF group were presented with were fever (100%), myalgia (34.77%), pharyngeal hyperemia (31.33%), headache (25.65%), adenoids (19.62%), and rash (13.25%). In the OFI group, Pharyngeal hyperemia was the most common clinical symptom, accounting for 27.24%, and the next symptom was adenoids (21.26%). The sensitivity and specificity of DV RNA were 61.54%, 100%, respectively, compared to the DF Nonstructural protein 1 (NS1). Dengue virus (DENV) Immunoglobulin M (IgM) IgM in both groups was statistically significant, with DENV-IgM in the DF group were stronger (Z=-7.863, P<0.001), and DENV immunoglobulin G (IgG) were no statistically significant (Z=-1.212, P=0.226). In DF group, 37.14% of serum samples had elevated Alanine transaminase (ALT) levels, 76.85% of them had elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, 32.08% of them had elevated creatine kinase (CK) levels, and 2.67% of them had elevated C-reaction protein (CRP) levels, compared with 13.51% of them had elevated ALT levels, 30.65% of them had elevated AST levels, 6.06% of them had elevated CK levels and 69.35% of them had elevated CRP levels of the OFI patients. The prominent manifestations were thrombocytopenia (occurring in 28.07% of the DF group, compared to 5.18% of OFI group) and leucopenia (occurring in 43.27% of DF group and 3.63% of OFI group). The DF incidence of all fever cases was 49.0% within three months in 2014, compared with 1.4% in 2015, 0% in 2016, 0.9% in 2017 and 6.4% in 2018 (P<0.001). DF and OFI can occur in any age and sex. DF occurred in the young and the old, OFI occurred in children and youth. The clinical symptoms of myalgia, headache, rash, weak, Chills, follicular hyperplasia in both groups were statistically significant (P<0.001)., Conclusions: IgM can be easily recognized for early diagnoses, DENV-RNA had lower sensitivity and higher specificity, and DF NS1 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has a higher sensitive and specificity. DF is a serious public health problem and an emerging continuous threat in Guangzhou. In high-prevalence areas, effective epidemic monitoring and prevention measures need to be undertaken. After the unprecedented outbreak in 2014, on account of the government and citizen paying more attention to the DF epidemic, the cases of DF were decreased significantly from 2015 to 2018.

The health impact of haze is of great concern, but few studies have explored its influence on human inhalation and dermal exposure to trace pollutants. Size-segregated atmospheric particles ( n = 72) and forehead wipe samples ( n = 80) from undergraduates were collected in Xinxiang, China, during a prolonged haze episode and analyzed for 10 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). ∑TCPP and TCEP were the most abundant OPFR substances in all samples. The arithmetic mean particle-bound and forehead OPFR concentrations under a heavy pollution condition (air quality index (AQI), 350-550) were 41.9 ng/m 3 (∑ 8 OPFRs) and 7.4 μg/m 2 (∑ 6 OPFRs), respectively, apparently greater than the values observed under a light pollution condition (AQI, 60-90) (19.5 ng/m 3 and 3.9 μg/m 2 , respectively). Meteorological conditions played distinctive roles in affecting the OPFR occurrence in atmospheric particles (statistically significant for TCEP and ∑TCPP) and forehead wipes (excluding TPHP), implying that OPFR exposure through inhalation and dermal absorption was synchronously influenced by air quality, and OPFRs on the forehead may be mainly absorbed from the air. Inhalation contributed dominantly to the total OPFR exposure dose for humans when using the relative absorption method to assess dermal exposure, while according to the permeability coefficient method, dermal exposure was much more significant than inhalation. The results of this study indicate that OPFR exposure should attract particular concern in regions with heavy air pollution.

Maize, rice, wheat and soybean-the major staple food crops in China-have a crucial role in national food security and economic development. Predictions of changes in the requirements for irrigation water in food crop production under climate change may provide scientific support for the optimum allocation of water resources and measures to mitigate climate change. We conducted a spatial grid-based analysis using projections of future climate generated by a bias-correction and spatial disaggregation multi-model ensemble for three representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) adopted by the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. We investigated the effects of climate change associated with increasing temperature, changed precipitation and increased concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on the irrigation water requirements of maize, rice, wheat and soybean in China at the end of the 21st century (2081-2100). Our results indicate that the irrigation water requirements of maize and wheat are driven by temperature and especially by CO 2 concentrations in the northwest interior area as a result of the low rainfall and high rates of evaporation; the irrigation water requirement of soybean is influenced by a combined effect of temperature, precipitation and CO 2 concentration, whereas the irrigation water requirement for rice is dominated by precipitation alone in the southern coastal region, which has high rainfall. The irrigation water requirements of crops decrease mainly as a result of the beneficial effects of CO 2 on plant growth in China. The regions requiring vast amounts of irrigation water as a result of climate change are mainly concentrated in northwestern China. The effects of climate change affect the requirement for irrigation water, especially under high-emission scenarios, and should be studied further to design appropriate adaptation strategies for the management of agricultural water to maintain the sustainable development of agriculture., (Copyright © 2018. Concentrations of eight trace metals (TMs) in road dust (RD) (particles < 25 μm) from urban areas of Xinxiang, China, were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The geometric mean concentrations of Zn, Mn, Pb, As, Cu, Cr, Ni and Cd were 489, 350, 114, 101, 60.0, 39.7, 31.6, and 5.1 mg kg -1 , respectively. When compared with TM levels in background soil, the samples generally display elevated TM concentrations, except for Cr and Mn, and for Cd the enrichment value was 69.6. Spatial variations indicated TMs in RD from park path would have similar sources with main roads, collector streets and bypasses. Average daily exposure doses of the studied TMs were about three orders of magnitude higher for hand-to-mouth ingestion than dermal contact, and the exposure doses for children were 9.33 times higher than that for adults. The decreasing trend of calculated hazard indexes (HI) for the eight elements was As > Pb > Cr > Mn > Cd > Zn > Ni > Cu for both children and adults.

Objectives: Up-to-date information on the patterns of acute poisoning is crucial for the proper management of poisoning events. The objectives of this study were to analyse the characteristics of patients suffering from acute poisoning admitted to the emergency department (ED) in a tertiary medical centre in Northeast China and to compare these characteristics with those of a previous comparable study., Design: Retrospective and descriptive study., Setting: Data were collected from the hospital information system in Shengjing Hospital, China, from January 2012 to December 2016., Participants: All cases aged ≥11 years old with a diagnosis of acute poisoning., Results: In total, 5009 patients aged ≥11 years presented to the ED with acute poisoning during the study period. The average age of the patients was 36.0±15.1 years and over half (52.7%) were in the 20-39age group. The female to male ratio was 1.2:1. Patients with acute poisoning mainly lived in rural areas rather than in urban areas. The majority of patients consumed poison as suicide attempts (56.7%). Men were more commonly poisoned by drug abuse than women, but women outnumbered men in suicidal poisoning. The most common form of poison intake was ingestion (oral intake; 86.2%). The five most common toxic agent groups, in descending order, were therapeutic drugs (32.6%), pesticides (26.9%), alcohol (20.7%), fumes/gases/vapours (11.4%) and chemicals (3.6%). Sedatives/hypnotics in the therapeutic drugs group and paraquat in the pesticides group were the most common toxic agents, respectively. Objective: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and patterns of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis wounds in order to provide reliable data for further clinical research., Methods: Records of patients with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis wounds hospitalized from January 2010 to December 2012 were retrospectively analyzed, including gender, age, nationality, family background, Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination, primary lesion, and history of injury., Results: Tuberculosis wounds were found in 235 patients among 5 863 patients with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, accounting for 4.0%. Among the patients with tuberculosis wounds, there were 139 male and 96 female, and the ratio of male to female was 1.4: 1.0. The age of patients ranged from 1 to 87 (37 +/- 18) years old, and the highest incidence occurred in patients older than 15 and younger than or equal to 30 years old (100 cases, accounting for 42.6%). Most patients with tuberculosis wounds were Han, and only 11 patients were minorities, accounting for 4.7%. Tuberculosis wounds were more prevalent in rural areas (163 cases, accounting for 69.4%), with a smaller number in urban areas (72 cases, accounting for 30.6%). The BCG vaccination rate was 13.6%. The main primary lesions were lymph node infection (112 cases, accounting for 47.7%), among which involvement of cervical lymph nodes accounted for the highest ratio ( 99 cases, accounting for 88.4%). Twenty-one patients had the traffic accident etc. injury history recently, among which 19 were male and 2 were female., Conclusions: Tuberculosis wound, with certain incidence, was more frequently found among young adults from rural areas. The BCG vaccination rate was low among the patients and the main primary lesion was tuberculosis of cervical lymph nodes.
