Background: This study aimed to explore the trend and risk indicators for dental caries of children aged 12 years in China based on national oral health survey data in 2005 and 2015.Methods: Research data were from the two latest national oral health surveys conducted in mainland China, including 30 and 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in 2005 and 2015, respectively. Children aged 12 years were clinically examined for dental caries and dental fluorosis according to the World Health Organization criteria. Sociodemographic characteristics and oral health-related behaviours were collected using questionnaires. Multilevel zero-inflated negative binomial regression model was used to investigate the association between dental caries severity and dental fluorosis, sociodemographic characteristics, and oral health-related behaviours.Results: The final analyses included 12,350 and 27,818 children surveyed in 2005 and 2015, respectively. The standardized prevalence of dental caries increased from 27.05% (95% confidence interval [CI], 24.25-28.85) in 2005 to 37.92% (95% CI, 34.94-40.90) in 2015, and the respective standardized mean decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) index scores increased from 0.50 (standard deviation [SD], 1.04) to 0.83 (SD, 1.45) (P < 0.001). Fujian province had the highest increase in dental caries, followed by Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Hainan, and Yunnan. Results revealed that children who were girls, more frequently experienced dental pain, and had more recent dental visits, had significantly higher DMFT scores after adjusting for the survey year and other variables (all P < 0.05).Conclusions: Dental caries of 12-year-old children in China deteriorated from 2005 to 2015, particularly in the northeast and southwest regions. Bilingual leaching has been used for several years in many Colleges of Stomatology in China, but there are still some problems be solved in textbooks, training of teachers, methods of teaching, etc. This paper discusses the purpose, manners, problems and strategies of bilingual teaching in stomatology. We believe that the specialties of stomatology and the situations of China should be considered in conducting bilingual teaching. The purposes of bilingual teaching are to use English and/or Chinese to teach basic and clinical knowledge and skill in Stomatology, and enhance the English ability of the students as well. To achieve the purposes and improve the quality of bilingual teaching, a well- organized textbook and adequate qualified teachers are demanded, modern teaching medias and methods should be adopted, and a rational teaching quality evaluation system should be established and fulfilled. Comparative proteomics is to compare the differential expression of overall protein profiles in different time and space, to identify differential proteins or protein groups on the expression amount, expression level, and modification status, and to further investigate the differential proteins and their function. The aim of this paper is to introduce the application of comparative proteomics in oral squamous cell carcinoma on the level of cell, tissue, and body fluid. PURPOSE: To analyze the complications of ethanol sclerotherapy for venous malformation(VM) in head and neck, and investigate the preventive methods. METHODS: 83 cases of VM in head and neck regions who received absolute ethanol sclerotherapy were retrospectively reviewed. The complications were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: Various complications developed during the procedure 28 in of 83 (33.7%) patients. The complications included ischemic bullae, tissue fibrosis, limitation of mouth opening, peripheral nerve palsy,allergy and hemoglobinuria. The major complications of temporary pulmonary hypertension, renal function impairment and pulmonary embolism did not occur. All incidences of complication were successfully managed with full recovery except one case of permanent facial nerve palsy that was present during 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Absolute ethanol may be accepted as a safe and effective treatment method tor sclerotherapy of venous malformation. The morbidity is acceptable. • Groundwater mounds resulting from nearshore recharge is identified in a sandy hillslope. • The thickness of vadose zone determines fluxes across water table along the hillslope. • Nearshore recharge temporarily changes streamlines and increases tortuosity of flowpaths. • Flowpaths near the wetland are mainly controlled by regional GW discharge and strong ET. Groundwater mounds and depressions induced by rainfall and evapotranspiration near wetlands/lakes have been widely observed, but their effects on groundwater flow field are poorly known. Here, a sandy hillslope near a wetland in the Ordos Plateau, China, which has a semi-arid climate, is selected for investigation. After identifying temporary groundwater mounds/depressions based on three water level observation wells, a HYDRUS-2D model is setup to obtain the highly transient daily flow field. The variable thickness of unsaturated zone near the wetland, which controls soil water content and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, is found to be responsible for groundwater mounds resulting from focused recharge and groundwater depressions resulting from nonuniform evapotranspiration. On nonrainy days, evapotranspiration in the lowland is supported by flowpaths from regional groundwater discharge, and in the slope is supported by a flow cell from the upland to the upper part of the slope, which causes water table recession in the upland. On rainy days, focused recharge in the lowland leads to two temporary local flow cells, which break the regional groundwater discharge flowpaths into two temporary flow cells. The two temporary flow cells toward the upland contribute to water table rises in the uplandMoreover, we find focused recharge in rainy days does not change the overall direction of flowpaths controlled by regional groundwater discharge and strong evapotranspiration, but only increase the tortuosity of flowpaths. By coupling daily atmospheric conditions and regional groundwater discharge, this study has implications for groundwater recharge estimation and future groundwater modelling in arid regions. Summary: Objectives: To evaluate the relation of tea consumption with the risk of oral cancer incidence. Subjects and methods: A multicenter case-control study based on hospitalized population was conducted for evaluating the association of tea consumption with oral cancer risk in China. Black tea and green tea were separately analyzed. 723 cases and 857 controls were included. Unconditional multiple logistic regression model was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of oral cancer for tea consumption. Results: The ORs for green tea consumption⩾8g/day compared with<4g/day were 0.72 (95% CI 0.54, 0.93) for men, and 0.93 (95% CI 0.74, 1.26) for women. The ORs for black tea consumption⩾6g/day compared with<2g/day were 0.97 (95% CI 0.74, 1.20) for men, and 0.91 (95% CI 0.68, 1.23) for women. Green tea intake was significantly associated with reduced risk of oral cancer in men, but not in women, and the association was stronger in heavily smoking men. There was no indication that black tea consumption was associated with decreased oral cancer risk. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that green tea consumption may decrease the risk of oral cancer in men especially for those smoking heavily. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• We summarize field observations of 14C age showing obvious GW aging in two basins. • Pumping causes not only rejuvenation, but also aging of GW in layered basins. • Although GW rejuvenation is larger in area, aging is greater in magnitude. • We identify two new mechanisms of pumping-induced GW aging in layered basins. • Topography-driven flow is the main cause of GW aging in the discharge area. As an indicator of the renewability of a groundwater basin, the spatial distribution of groundwater age has attracted intensive research. As reported in the literature, 3H measurements in 74 US aquifers showed pumping-induced groundwater rejuvenation, whereas 14C ages in two heavily developed aquifers in France and China indicated pumping-induced groundwater aging. Unfortunately, the mechanisms leading to the seemingly opposite behavior of pumping-induced aging and rejuvenation remain unclear. In this study, we conducted numerical simulations of groundwater age in layered aquifer-aquitard systems under different pumping scenarios and aquitard permeability to show that pumping-induced groundwater rejuvenation and aging always occur simultaneously. Groundwater rejuvenation widely occurs throughout the basin wherever the well is located, whereas groundwater aging mainly occurs to the downgradient parts of the basin. Although groundwater rejuvenation is larger in area, groundwater aging is greater in magnitude, and the magnitude of aging increases with pumping intensity and duration. Moreover, when pumping occurs in the discharge area, aging could occur in almost the entire aquifer to the downgradient of the pumping well, and the magnitude of aging is larger. The large area and large magnitude of aging in the discharge area is a direct result of upward leakage of old groundwater from underlying aquitards/aquifers, which is controlled by the topography-driven groundwater flow. By demonstrating the importance of topography-driven groundwater flow and underlying formations in groundwater age redistribution, this study has implications for determining the bottom of a groundwater flow and solute transport model and interpretation of various tracers. Keratinophyton is a genus of well-known keratinophilic fungi found in various terrestrial habitats. During a survey of keratinolytic fungi in China, a total of 12 isolates of Keratinophyton species, representing eight taxa, were obtained from the soil. Two of these isolates were described as new species based on their morphological characteristics and molecular analyses of the internal transcribed spacer region and the rRNA gene of the nuclear large subunit. Descriptions and illustrations of these two novel species, which are named Keratinophyton chongqingense sp. nov. and Keratinophyton sichuanense sp. nov., are provided herein.

An investigation of members of the soil keratinophilic fungi community in China resulted in the identification of one new monotypic genus, Zongqia , and 10 new species, 2 of which are affiliated with Solomyces , 1 with the new genus Zongqia , 4 with Pseudogymnoascus , and 3 with Scedosporium . These novel taxa form an independent lineage distinct from other species, based on morphological and multilocus phylogenetic analyses. Descriptions, illustrations, and notes are provided for each taxon. These new taxa of the soil keratinophilic fungi add to the increasing number of fungi known from China, and it is now evident that numerous novel taxa are waiting to be described. IMPORTANCE Keratinophilic fungi are a group that can degrade and utilize keratin-rich material. It is also because of this ability that many taxa can cause infections in animals or humans but remain poorly studied. In this study, we reported a novel genus and 10 novel species, 7 novel species belonging to the order Thelebolales and 3 to the genus Scedosporium , based on multilocus phylogenetic analyses combined with morphological characteristics. Our study significantly updates the taxonomy of Thelebolales and Scedosporium and enhances our understanding of this group of the keratin-degrading fungal community. The findings also encourage future studies on the artificially constructed keratin-degrading microbial consortia.

Purpose: To understand oral health professionals' knowledge, attitude, behavior and training needs related to clinical research, and explore relevant factors affecting clinical research knowledge level., Methods: An online self-designed questionnaire was conducted among oral health professionals from the collaborative innovation network member units of the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases (Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine). The data were processed with SAS 9.4 software package., Results: A total of 281 oral health professionals were enrolled in the study. Most of them had a positive attitude towards clinical research, 80% of them had an idea of carrying out clinical research, while only 22.8% of them implemented finally. The main causes restricting oral health professionals from conducting clinical research were lack of time (68.3%), insufficient teams (63.7%), and short of financial support (60.9%). Participants' mean score of clinical research knowledge was (13.72±7.20) points. Multiple linear regression model showed the type of hospital, clinical research participation in the past five years and epidemiologists' or statisticians' involvement in the latest project were related to participants' knowledge level of clinical research., Conclusions: Oral health professionals have a positive attitude towards clinical research, while their behavior and knowledge about clinical research were weak. Strengthening the top design of clinical research is inseparable from the cultivation of professionals' clinical research ability. The national clinical research center should give full play to the mission of the "national team", accelerate the establishment of a specialized, normalized and large-scale clinical research training pattern, and provide training opportunities to network member units.

Corona virus disease 2019(COVID-19) has swept across our country and local governments have successively initiated first level response to public health emergencies. The outbreak of COVID-19 poses a huge challenge to the implementation of various clinical researches including oral diseases. In view of the specialty of oral diseases, it is particularly necessary to protect the health and rights of the participators and related practitioners, and to standardize the implementation of clinical trials. Based on the normative standards issued by the National Health Commission of China, consensus on clinical trial management formulated by the organization of clinical research, and regulations for the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases during public health emergencies by Chinese Stomatological Association, we drafted the guideline for clinical research of oral diseases, with a view to provide reference for the clinical studies of oral diseases under the first level response to major public health emergencies.

Background: Salivary gland carcinoma ranks the sixth in head and neck cancers while it is relatively rare in its incidence. Epidemiological studies have been based mostly on institutional data, leading to selection bias in incidence evaluation. Most population-based cancer registries have grouped cancers of the minor salivary glands with oral cancer instead of with salivary gland carcinoma as a whole, because of the international disease coding. Thus, the incidence of salivary gland carcinoma has not been well assessed. The aim of the study is to evaluate the incidence of both minor and major salivary gland cancers in Shanghai during the years 2003-2012, and to analyse the site and histological distributions., Methods: Data from the Shanghai Cancer Registry system were extracted for patients diagnosed with malignancies of the major or minor salivary glands for the year 2003 to 2012. Pertinent socio-demographic data were obtained from the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Security. The age-standardized incidence rates were calculated directly according to the world standard population. The change in incidence during the study period was analysed by comparing the rates during the first and next five years. The distributions of anatomic subsites and histology were also analysed., Results: A total of 1831 cases were identified, representing 0.35% of all malignancies during the study period. The median age was 59 and 57 years for men and women, respectively. The age-standardized incidence was 7.99 per 1,000,000 person-year, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.10. There was no significant change in the incidence during the 10-year period. The anatomic distribution confirmed the 4:1:2 rule for the parotid, submandibular, and minor glands. In men, adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified was the most common histological type followed by mucoepidermoid; in women, the mucoepidermoid was the most common histotype, followed by the adenoid cystic., Conclusion: Salivary gland carcinoma is relatively rare in incidence. However, the variations in age and sex distribution in sites and histology types suggest differences in aetiology which warrants further investigation.

Background: Oral cancer is a serious problem owing to its poor prognosis and destruction of patients' eating ability as well as facial appearance. Epidemiological studies can provide aetiological clues for prevention. The prevalence of oral cancer in densely populated cities in eastern China is unclear. The aim of the study is to analyse the incidence rates of oral cancer in Shanghai over the period 2003-2012 and estimate the temporal trends., Methods: Cases of oral cancer were retrieved from the Shanghai Cancer Registry system in the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control & Prevention for the years 2003 to 2012. Information on the corresponding population was obtained from the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Security. Age-standardised incidence rates were directly calculated according to the world standard population. An annual percent change model was employed to analyse the temporal trends of cancer incidence., Results: A total of 3860 oral cancer cases were reported, representing 0.69% of all malignancies in Shanghai during the 10-year study period. The mean age at diagnosis was 64 years. The age-standardised incidence rate was 1.34 per 100,000 person-years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.41. Annually, the incidence rates increased by 3.83 and 2.54% for men and women, respectively. The increase was most noticeable in males aged 45-64 years., Conclusion: In Shanghai, the oral cancer incidence is relatively low. However, it is continuously increasing, especially among middle-aged males. This finding urges further investigations on the risk factors of oral cancer in this population, especially on changes in living patterns, such as the smoking, drinking, and dietary habits.

Purpose: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), formerly known as cylindroma, is a malignant epithelial neoplasm typically derived from the salivary glands. Of all salivary gland tumors, the incidence of malignant salivary gland tumor has been 15 to 32% in the parotid glands, 70 to 90% in the sublingual glands, and about 50% in the minor salivary glands. Intraosseous ACC of the jaw has rarely been reported and is poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to analyze this tumor clinically and histopathologically to improve the diagnosis, management, and treatment., Materials and Methods: We collected the records of 16 patients with intraosseous ACC from 1998 to 2013, who had been treated at our hospital, including clinical data and follow-up information. We then analyzed the patients' clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis., Results: The average age of the 16 patients was 56.8 years, and the male/female ratio was 0.8. The primary manifestations of the tumor were obviously different. Tumor excision was performed and followed by radiotherapy or chemotherapy, or both. The average follow-up period was 57.2 months, and the average follow-up period for patients who were alive and tumor free was 52.3 months. The survival rate was 68.8% after treatment. All these results were generally in agreement with those from previous reports., Conclusions: The differential diagnosis of intraosseous ACC from other common tumors of jaws should be determined by the clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic subtypes. For treatment, surgery is the first choice for patients, and radiotherapy or chemotherapy might improve the prognosis in the postoperative period. China is a developing country with the largest population of any country in the world. The 2010 sixth national census found that China's population was 1,339,724,852, accounting for about 19 percent of the world's total population. However, higher education in the Chinese dental field started late and developed slowly. In order to acquaint more dental educators worldwide about China's current higher dental education system, this article provides a brief introduction to the present education system, degrees conferred, curriculum setting, training mode, teaching materials, courses, and academic journals.

As a medical approach to posing contextualized questions that are based on real-life clinical problems, case-based learning (CBL) is used to stimulate and underpin the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes through clinical cases. Good effects were acquired in the practice of CBL teaching in English applied by the College of Stomatology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Responses from both students and teachers reflected that this course approach won their high acceptance and was worthy of use in selected stomatological courses.

The aim of the present study was to investigate β2-microglobulin (β2-M) expression in normal oral mucosa and progressive oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to assess the clinical significance of β2-microglobulin expression. The study included 10 cases of normal oral mucosa epithelium specimens, 55 cases of primary OSCC specimens, and 25 cases of OSCC metastasis specimens. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine β2-M expression, and its correlation with clinicopathological factors in progressive OSCC was evaluated. Immunohistochemistry showed that strong β2-M expression was significantly asscociated with tumor size (T3, T4 vs. T1, T2; P=0.001), positive node status (N positive vs. N negative; P=0.000) and advanced clinical stage (Ⅲ, Ⅳ vs. Ⅰ, Ⅱ, P=0.000) in primary OSCC lesions. Compared to primary OSCC lesions, the frequency of β2-M expression was significantly increased in metastatic OSCC lesions (P=0.02). In addition, in vitro results from Western blotting showed increased β2-M expression in the two OSCC lines studied. Therefore, we speculate that the up-regulation of β2-M expression may contribute to the oncogenesis of human oral mucosa, tumor invasion and metastasis.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a widely accepted educational method centered on the discussion and learning that emerge from a clinically based problem; however, little has been reported on the details of PBL case-writing in the dental education literature. This article outlines some principles of writing a PBL case as it is practiced at a Chinese dental school and presents, as an example, an actual case based on a clinical problem (ameloblastoma of the jaw) intended to provide a learning focus for predoctoral dental students. A good PBL case should allow for progressive, interdependent actions to be taken in the evaluation and overall management of the patient in context and should trigger inquiry and discussion among students in both the basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathophysiology, etc.) and related clinical sciences. The epidemiological, sociological, and ethical considerations related to each problem should also be emphasized as an essential component of effective health care provision.

Objective: To explore the secular trend of incidence for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in urban Shanghai during 1973 - 2005., Methods: The incidence data from the population-based cancer registries in Shanghai was used in our analysis. We calculated the crude incidence rates, age-adjusted incidence rates, truncated rates and cumulative rates of NPC. The annual percentage change (APC) was used as an estimate of the secular trend., Results: Over 33 years, a total of 7889 incident NPC cases in urban Shanghai were registered for 5555 males and 2334 females, respectively. The incidence of NPC had remained stable in males during the period (APC = -0.250%, P = 0.340), but a decreasing trend was observed in females with an average reduction of -1.577% (P = 0.000) per year. During the period of 1973 - 1976 to 2001 - 2005, the crude incidence rates changed from 4.56 to 6.18 and from 3.96 to 2.41 per 100 000 in males and females, and the age-adjusted rates from 4.12 to 3.96 and from 2.18 to 3.42 per 100 000 in males and females, respectively., Conclusion: From 1973 to 2005, the incidence of NPC was stable in males while having a decline in females, indicating that further epidemiological study and prevention for NPC should be addressed.
