Rapid development of urbanization and intense human activities had a profound influence on the ecosystem service functions. As an integrated monetary index for the evaluation of final ecosystem services, the gross ecosystem product (GEP) is widely used in the quantification of ecosystem service value (ESV). This study initially assessed and analyzed the spatial distribution of the GEP at the county-level scale using multisource data spanning 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. Then, the spatial transfer characteristics of the GEP were measured. Finally, the study employed spatial panel econometric models and the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model to investigate the spatial effect of urbanization and ecological construction on the GEP. The results indicated that: (1) In 2020, the GEP in the Yangtze River Delta Region was RMB 15.24 trillion, and the GEP per unit area was RMB 42.58 million per square kilometer. It exhibited a cumulative decrease of RMB 298.72 billion from 2000 to 2020. (2) The spatial transfer efficiency of the GEP in urban agglomerations showed a clear decline trend. During the period of 2000–2020, over 96% of county-level units exhibited a decline with RMB 90,076,103.17/km2, indicating a consistent downward trend from the central regions towards the periphery. (3) Based on the decomposition effects of the spatial Durbin mode, urbanization and the ecological construction indicator showed spatial spillover effects on the GEP, but their impact mechanisms varied substantially. Among them, the urbanization rate (UR), population density (PD), and the proportion of impervious land (ILP) had the largest negative effect on the GEP, and a 1% rise in ILP locally resulted in a 0.044% decline in the local GEP and a 0.078% rise in the GEP of neighboring units. And the area of ecological land had a positive effect on the GEP of both local and neighboring areas. Crop irrigation based on controlling the matric potential of soil water at the depth of soil fixation in the root zone is more suitable than deficit irrigation for promoting cultivation in arid agricultural areas. However, it remains challenging to determine how controlled irrigation (CI) quantifies crop the response to water limitation and to establish the appropriate CI thresholds based on soil water matric potential. This study was conducted on sunflower fields in Hetao Irrigation District, a typical arid agricultural area in China where this crop is widely grown. Five CI treatments were applied for different soil water matric potentials (-8, -16, -24, -32, and − 40 kPa) to study the effects of CI on the soil environment and the relationship with crop yield. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) after 2 years of CI treatments, secondary salinization was significantly reduced below the defined criteria for saline soils (4 dS/m), achieving desalination of the entire soil profile; (2) the application of CI as an irrigation strategy in the management of sunflower fields significantly improved physiological traits during the crucial period of sunflower yield formation by increasing plant height while reducing stem thickness; (3) two treatments with the greatest difference in the lower limit of control of soil water matric potential under this irrigation strategy exhibited a yield variance ratio that increased from 0.14% in the first year to 15.37% in the second year; and (4) the treatment that controlled soil water matric potential at -24 kPa obtained the highest yield of all treatments in the test cycle, leading to an increase in seed yield of up to 1266.66 kg/ha in 2022 compared to the previous year. In Northern China, karst systems in widely distributed carbonate rocks are one of the most important water supplies for local inhabitants. Constrained by the specific geological and geomorphological conditions, most karst water in this region is discharged as individual or groups of springs. This paper summarizes the characteristics, chemistry, and environmental quality of these karst systems in Northern China. Five structural models of karst water systems were identified based on the relationships between the karst geological strata and karst groundwater flow fields. These specific structural models may closely relate to the attendant environmental geological issues and consistent risks from pollution. Over the past 40 years, the karst water systems in Northern China have suffered from various environmental problems, including deteriorating water quality, the drying up of springs, a continuous decline in the level of karst water, and so on. Based on the field investigation and previous data, a preliminary summary is provided of the environmental problems related to the development and evolutionary trends of karst water in this region. The results highlight the significant challenges associated with karst water, and it is essential that all segments of society be made aware of the situation in order to demand change. Economic evolution is considered as being driven by innovation of research and development (R&D) even if regional characteristics usually have critical impacts on various culture-oriented living styles that change in a social transformation dynamically. In documented Chinese history, climate changes and geographic conditions are constraints of the economic evolution in ecologically fragile regions. Lots of unpublished indigenous knowledge of environmental adaptation as a part of culture have been excluded from innovative records. In this research, we review research records of several key factors closely associated with economic evolution in the history of study regions, including climate change, cultural transition, economic base, resource endowment and transportation accessibility. By surveying previous research records and contents, we examine the paths of economic evolution mixed with adaptive cultures response to climate change in each region and draw conclusions that (1) the economic evolution with regional climate changes interactively experience three stages of culture-hindered, culture-mixed, and culture-impelled adaptation diversely; (2) regions that have higher economic performance with less innovative records highly likely have a relatively large number of indigenous knowledge unpublished throughout cultural evolution; and (3) English world has research preference to the regions that have lower economic performance with a distinctive culture in China. In order to achieve the integrated river basin management in the arid and rapid developing region, the Heihe River Basin (HRB) in Northwestern China, one of critical river basins were selected as a representative example, while the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) in Australia and the Colorado River Basin (CRB) in the USA were selected for comparative analysis in this paper. Firstly, the comparable characters and hydrological contexts of these three watersheds were introduced in this paper. Then, based on comparative studies on the river basin challenges in terms of the drought, intensive irrigation, and rapid industrialization, the hydrological background of the MDB, the CRB and the HRB was presented. Subsequently, the river management strategies were compared in three aspects: water allocation, water organizations, and water act and scientific projects. Finally, we proposed recommendations for integrated river basin management for the HRB: (1) Water allocation strategies should be based on laws and markets on the whole basin; (2) Public participation should be stressed by the channels between governance organizations and local communities; (3) Scientific research should be integrated into river management to understand the interactions between the human and nature. In ecologically fragile areas with arid climate, such as the Heihe River Basin in northwestern China, sustainable social and economic development depends largely on the availability and sustainable uses of water resource. However, there is more and more serious water resource shortage and decrease of water productivity in Heihe River Basin under the influence of climate change and human activities. This paper attempts to identify the severe water scarcity under climate change and presents possible solutions for sustainable development in Heihe River Basin. Three problems that intervened land use changes, water resource, the relevant policies and institutions in Heihe River basin were identified, including (1) water scarcity along with serious contradiction between water supply and demand, (2) irrational water consumption structure along with low efficiency, and (3) deficient systems and institutions of water resource management along with unreasonable water allocation scheme. In this sense, we focused on reviewing the state of knowledge, institutions, and successful practices to cope with water scarcity at a regional extent. Possible solutions for dealing with water scarcity are explored and presented from three perspectives: (1) scientific researches needed by scientists, (2) management and institution formulation needed by governments, and (3) water resource optimal allocation by the manager at all administrative levels. Spatial planning has been globally developed as a policy tool to govern built-up land expansion. However, causal evidence of the effect of spatial planning on built-up land expansion is limited, which raises doubts on the credibility of spatial planning and hinders theoretical developments in land-system science. We evaluated the effect of the Major Function Oriented Zone (MFOZ), the first strategic spatial plan in China, on built-up land expansion in Fujian Province over three time intervals (2013–2015, 2013–2018 and 2013–2020). Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to overcome selection bias and obtain causal evidence. We implemented a conventional conformance evaluation as a reference for the PSM-based conformance evaluation, to demonstrate the problem of selection bias. The conventional conformance evaluation showed that the MFOZ effectively governed built-up land expansion in the three time intervals. The PSM-based conformance evaluation showed the smaller effect of the MFOZ and the effect was significant only in the time period 2013–2018 and 2013–2020. That is, the conventional conformance evaluation results in an initially ineffective effect of the MFOZ being estimated as effective in 2013–2015 and exaggerates the effect of the MFOZ on built-up land expansion in 2013–2018 and 2013–2020. In aggregate, Fujian's MFOZ prevented a total of 79.31 km2 of built-up land within the development-restricted zone between 2013 and 2020. To conclude, we recommend a wider application of the PSM-based conformance evaluation in evaluating the effect of spatial planning on land-use change, since this method accounts for selection bias and provides more accurate results regarding causality than conventional conformance evaluations. • Causal effect of spatial planning on built-up land expansion was estimated. • Major Function-Oriented Zone effectively governed built-up land expansion in Fujian Province, China. • Temporal variation in the causal effect of Major Function-Oriented Zone was found. • Propensity score matching can handle selection bias inherent in planning process. To overcome the spread of the severe COVID-19 outbreak, various lockdown measures have been taken worldwide. China imposed the strictest home-quarantine measures during the COVID-19 outbreak in the year 2020. This provides a valuable opportunity to study the impact of anthropogenic emission reductions on air quality. Based on the GEE platform and satellite imagery, this study analyzed the changes in the concentrations of NO 2 , O 3 , CO, and SO 2 in the same season (1 February-1 May) before and after the epidemic control (2019-2021) for 16 typical representative cities of China. The results showed that NO 2 concentrations significantly decreased by around 20-24% for different types of metropolises, whereas O 3 increased for most of the studied metropolises, including approximately 7% in megacities and other major cities. Additionally, the concentrations of CO and SO 2 showed no statistically significant changes during the study intervals. The study also indicated strong variations in air pollutants among different geographic regions. In addition to the methods in this study, it is essential to include the differences in meteorological impact factors in the study to identify future references for air pollution reduction measures.

Soil microbial biomass and microbial stoichiometric ratios are important for understanding carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we compiled data from 12245 observations of soil microbial biomass from 1626 published studies to map global patterns of microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP), and their stoichiometry using a random forest model. Concentrations of MBC, MBN, and MBP were most closely linked to soil organic carbon, while climatic factors were most important for stoichiometry in microbial biomass ratios. Modeled seasonal MBC concentrations peaked in summer in tundra and in boreal forests, but in autumn in subtropical and in tropical biomes. The global mean MBC/MBN, MBC/MBP, and MBN/MBP ratios were estimated to be 10, 48, and 6.7, respectively, at 0-30 cm soil depth. The highest concentrations, stocks, and microbial C/N/P ratios were found at high latitudes in tundra and boreal forests, probably due to the higher soil organic matter content, greater fungal abundance, and lower nutrient availability in colder than in warmer biomes. At 30-100 cm soil depth, concentrations of MBC, MBN, and MBP were highest in temperate forests. The MBC/MBP ratio showed greater flexibility at the global scale than did the MBC/MBN ratio, possibly reflecting physiological adaptations and microbial community shifts with latitude. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has become one of the most severe public health issues and nowadays around 38 million people are living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being is one of 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Here, we used the Markov chain matrix and geospatial clustering to comprehensively quantify the trends of the AIDS epidemic at the provincial administrate level in the mainland of China from 2005 to 2017. The Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model was further adopted to explore four groups of potential influencing factors (i.e., economy, traffic and transportation, medical care, and education) of the AIDS incidence rate in 2017 and their spatially distributed patterns. Results showed that the AIDS prevalence in southeastern China had been dominant and become prevalent in the past decade. The AIDS intensity level had been increasing between 2008 and 2011 but been gradually decreasing afterward. The analysis of the Markov chain matrix indicated that the AIDS epidemic has been generally in control on the Chinese mainland. The economic development was closely related to the rate of AIDS incidence on the Chinese mainland. The GWR result further suggested that medical care and the education effects on AIDS incidence rate can vary with different regions, but significant conclusions cannot be directly demonstrated. Our findings contribute an analytical framework of understanding AIDS epidemic trends and spatial variability of potential underlying factors throughout a complex extent to customize scientific prevention.

Broadly neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) such as those generated in chronic human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection are considered a key component for an effective HIV-1 vaccine. Here, we measured NAb responses using a panel of 25 Env-pseudotyped viruses, including clade B, C, A, CRF07&#95;BC and CRF01&#95;AE strains, against plasma samples from 103 subjects in a former plasma donor cohort in central China, who were infected with HIV-1 clade B' for at least 10 years and naïve to antiretroviral therapy at the time of sampling. We found that 64 % of samples (n = 66) neutralized at least half of the viruses tested and 2 % (n = 2) neutralized all of the viruses, while 5 % (n = 5) neutralized none of the viruses tested. Strikingly, 29 % of plasma samples (n = 30) neutralized >80 % of the viral strains tested, indicating the presence of broadly reactive NAbs in these patients. When the magnitude (geometric mean ID(50) titres, GMTs) or breadth of neutralization was assessed for correlation with CD4 count or plasma viral load, the only significant positive correlations were observed between viral load and neutralization magnitude (r = 0.2189, P = 0.0263) and between viral load and neutralization breadth (r = 0.1970, P = 0.0461). A moderate difference between progressors and long-term non-progressors was observed in both the breadth (P = 0.0316) and the potency (P = 0.0300). A significant difference was found in the GMTs between intra-clade and inter-clade strains (P<0.001). Heat-map analysis based on k-means clustering of plasma determined a statistically stable cluster of plasma with cross-reactive and potent neutralizing reactivity. These samples could provide physical biomaterials for further virological and serological studies from which useful insights into rational HIV-1 vaccine development and therapeutic design might be derived.
