Epistemic uncertainty in data-driven landslide susceptibility assessment often tends to be increased by the limited accuracy of an individual model, as well as uncertainties associated with the selection of non-landslide samples. To address these issues, this paper centers on the landslide disaster in Ji'an City, China, and proposes a heterogeneous ensemble learning method incorporating frequency ratio (FR) and semi-supervised sample expansion. Based on the superimposed results of 12 environmental factor frequency ratios (FFR), non-landslide samples were selected and input into light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM), random forest (RF), and convolutional neural network (CNN) models for prediction along with historical landslide samples. The predicted probability values are integrated by four heterogeneous ensemble strategies to expand samples from high-confidence results. The model's performance is evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), partition frequency ratio (PFR), and other verification methods. The results demonstrate that the negative sample based on FFR sampling is more accurate than the random sampling method, and the FR-SSELR model based on frequency ratio sampling and semi-supervised ensemble strategy exhibits the highest performance (AUC = 0.971, ACC = 0.941). A more reasonable landslide susceptibility map was drawn based on this model, with the lowest percentage of landslides in the low and very low susceptibility zones (sum of PFR = 0.194), as well as the highest percentage of landslides in the high and very high susceptibility zones (sum of PFR = 6.800). Furthermore, the FR-SSELR model improved economic benefits by 3.82–14.2%, offering valuable guidance for decision-making regarding landslide management and the sustainability of Ji'an City. Accurately assessing the susceptibility of debris flow disasters is of great significance for reducing the cost of disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as disaster losses. Machine learning (ML) models have been widely used in the susceptibility assessment of debris flow disasters. However, these models often have randomness in the selection of non-disaster data, which can lead to redundant information and poor applicability and accuracy of susceptibility evaluation results. To address this issue, this paper focuses on debris flow disasters in Yongji County, Jilin Province, China; optimizes the sampling method of non-disaster datasets in machine learning susceptibility assessment; and proposes a susceptibility prediction model that couples information value (IV) with artificial neural network (ANN) and logistic regression (LR) models. A debris flow disaster susceptibility distribution map with higher accuracy was drawn based on this model. The model's performance is evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), information gain ratio (IGR), and typical disaster point verification methods. The results show that the rainfall and topography were found to be decisive factors in the occurrence of debris flow disasters, and the IV-ANN model established in this study had the highest accuracy (AUC = 0.968). Compared to traditional machine learning models, the coupling model produced an increase in economic benefit of about 25% while reducing the average disaster prevention and control investment cost by about 8%. Based on model's susceptibility map, this paper proposes practical disaster prevention and control suggestions that promote sustainable development in the region, such as establishing monitoring systems and information platforms to aid disaster management. Drought is an extremely dangerous natural hazard that causes water crises, crop yield reduction, and ecosystem fires. Researchers have developed many drought indices based on ground-based climate data and various remote sensing data. Ground-based drought indices are more accurate but limited in coverage; while the remote sensing drought indices cover larger areas but have poor accuracy. Applying data-driven models to fuse multi-source remote sensing data for reproducing composite drought index may help fill this gap and better monitor drought in terms of spatial resolution. Machine learning methods can effectively analyze the hierarchical and non-linear relationships between the independent and dependent variables, resulting in better performance compared with traditional linear regression models. In this study, seven drought impact factors from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite sensor, Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM), and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used to reproduce the standard precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for Shandong province, China, from 2002 to 2020. Three machine learning methods, namely bias-corrected random forest (BRF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and support vector machines (SVM) were applied as regression models. Then, the best model was used to construct the spatial distribution of SPEI. The results show that the BRF outperforms XGBoost and SVM in SPEI estimation. The BRF model can effectively monitor drought conditions in areas without ground observation data. The BRF model provides comprehensive drought information by producing a spatial distribution of SPEI, which provides reliability for the BRF model to be applied in drought monitoring. Background: Vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency is associated with an altered microbiota in older men. However, the relationship between the gut microbiota and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels remains unknown in postmenopausal women. In this study, fecal microbiota profiles for 88 postmenopausal women in the high 25(OH)D (HVD) group (n = 44) and the low 25(OH)D (LVD) group (n = 44) were determined. An integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS)-based metabolomics approach was applied to explore the association of serum 25(OH)D levels with the gut microbiota and fecal metabolic phenotype. Adjustments were made using several statistical models for potential confounding variables identified from the literature. Results: The results demonstrated that the community diversity estimated by the Observe, Chao1 and ACE indexes was significantly lower in the LVD group than in the HVD group. Additionally, two kinds of characteristic differences in the microflora were analyzed in the HVD group, and ten kinds of characteristic differences in the microflora were analyzed in the LVD group. We observed that some bacteria belonging to the genera Bifidobacterium, Bacillus, F0332 and Gemella, were enriched in the LVD group, as were other genera, including Lachnoclostridium, UC5_1_2E3, Ruminococcus_gnavus_group and un_f_Lachnospiraceae. Christensenellaceae, Eggerthellaceae and Cloacibacillus were enriched in the HVD group. The L-pyroglutamic acid, inosine, and L-homocysteic acid levels were higher in the HVD group and were negatively correlated with the 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid and cholic acid metabolic levels. Conclusions: These observations provide a better understanding of the relationships between serum 25(OH)D levels and the fecal microbiota and metabolites in postmenopausal women. To improve the wind speed forecasts at turbine locations and at hub height, this study develops the WRFDA system to assimilate the wind speed observations measured on the nacelle of turbines (hereafter referred as turbine wind speed observations) with both 3DVAR and 4DVAR algorithms. Results exhibit that the developed data assimilation (DA) system helps in greatly improving the analysis and the forecast of wind turbine speed. Among three experiments with no cycling DA, with 2-h cycling DA, and with 4-h cycling DA, the last experiment generates the best analysis, improving the averaged forecasts (from T + 9 to T + 24) of wind speed over all wind farms by 32.5% in the bias and 6.3% in the RMSE. After processing the turbine wind speed observations into superobs, even bigger improvements are revealed when validating against either the original turbine wind speed observations or the superobs. Taken the results validated against the superobs as an example, the bias and RMSE of the forecasts (from T + 9 to T + 24) averaged over all wind farms are reduced by 38.8% and 12.0%, respectively. Compared to the best-performed 3DVAR experiment (4-h cycling and superobs), the experiment following the same DA strategy but using 4DVAR algorithm exhibits further improvements, especially for the averaged bias in the forecasts of all wind farms, and the changing amount in the forecasts of the enhanced wind farms. Whether or not biogeographic rules dealing with spatial patterns of animal body sizes are valid for ectotherms is controversial. As the ectotherms grow all their lives, we explored the role of age and annual growth rate in body size variation in Phrynocephalus przewalskii in northern China. Morphological data were collected from 11 populations across a broad geographic gradient. Correlations between age, sex, climatic factors, and body size were analyzed using generalized linear model (GLM) and generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). GLM analysis indicated that the general body size of both sexes and the appendage size of females increased significantly with increasing temperature; however, the coefficient of determination was very small. GLMM analysis indicated that body size only correlated with age, whereas appendage size was affected by age, temperature, rainfall, and sunshine. Annual growth rates were positively correlated with temperature. We concluded that body size variation was mainly caused by age structure and plasticity of the growth rate in P. przewalskii and did not follow Bergmann's rule; however, females followed Allen's rule. Future studies to investigate the effect of energy restriction are needed to further understand the relationship between growth rate and body size. The detailed spatial distributions and diurnal variations of low-level jets (LLJs) during early summer (May-July) in China are documented using 2006-11 hourly model data from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model with a 9-km horizontal resolution. It was found that LLJs frequently occur in the following regions of China: the Tarim basin, northeastern China, the Tibetan Plateau (TP), and southern China. The LLJs over China are classified into two types: boundary layer jets (BLJs, below 1 km) and synoptic-system-related LLJs (SLLJs, within 1-4 km). The LLJs in the Tarim basin and the TP are mainly BLJs. The SLLJs over southern China and northeastern China are associated with the mei-yu front and northeast cold vortex (NECV), respectively. The BLJs in all regions show pronounced diurnal variations with maximum occurrences at nighttime or in the early morning, whereas diurnal variations of SLLJs vary, depending on the location. From the analysis of model data, the diurnal variation of BLJs is mainly caused by inertial oscillation at nighttime and vertical mixing in the boundary layer during daytime. Over northeastern China, SLLJ occurrences show little diurnal variation. Over southern China, two diurnal modes of SLLJs, propagation and stationary, exist and have seasonal variations, which is generally consistent with diurnal variations of precipitation. Blastus auriculatus, a shrub sparsely distributed in Yunnan, China, occurs only in bamboo forests at an elevation of below 200 m. It is categorized as 'Critically Endangered (CR)' in China Biodiversity Red List. In addition, the phylogenetic position of Blastus within the Melastomataceae family is still unclear. This study generated the complete chloroplast genome sequence of B. auriculatus with aims to provide genetic resources for conservation genetics and to reslove the phylogenetic position of Blastus. The size of the chloroplast genome of B. auriculatus is 155,981 bp, including a large single-copy (LSC) region of 85,955 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 16,434 bp, separated by a pair of identical inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,796 bp each. The chloroplast genome contains a total of 125 genes, including 80 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that B. auriculatus is closest to Barthea barthei among species in Melastomataceae with available chloroplast genome sequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Colletotrichum fructicola , is an important fungal pathogen that has been reported to cause pear (Pyrus) anthracnose in China, resulting in substantial economic losses due to severe defoliation and decreased fruit quality and yield. In the search for novel strategies to control pear anthracnose, Lysobacter strains have drawn a great deal of attention due to their high-level production of extracellular enzymes and bioactive metabolites. In the present study, we compared four Lysobacter strains including Lysobacter enzymogenes OH11, Lysobacter antibioticus OH13, Lysobacter gummosus OH17 and Lysobacter brunescens OH23 with respect to their characteristics and activity against pear anthracnose caused by C. fructicola. The results showed that the evaluated Lysobacter species presented various colony morphologies when cultured on different media and were proficient in producing protease, chitinase, cellulase and glucanase, with L. enzymogenes OH11 showing typical twitching motility. L. enzymogenes OH11 and L. gummosus OH17 showed potent activity against the tested fungi and oomycetes. L. gummosus OH17 produced HSAF (heat-stable antifungal factor) which was demonstrated to be a major antifungal factor in L. enzymogenes OH11 and C3. Furthermore, L. antibioticus OH13 and L. brunescens OH23 exhibited strong antibacterial activity, especially against Xanthomonas species. Cultures of L. enzymogenes OH11 protected pear against anthracnose caused by C. fructicola , and the in vivo results indicated that treatment with an L. enzymogenes OH11 culture could decrease the diameter of lesions in pears by 35 % and reduce the severity of rot symptoms compared to that observed in the control. In the present study, we systemically compared four Lysobacter strains and demonstrated that they have strong antagonistic activity against a range of pathogens, demonstrating their promise in the development of biological control agents. Air samples were collected using high-volume samplers at two coastal towns on the Bohai Sea in China, 320 km apart, and at a background site (North Huangcheng Island) in the Bohai Sea, 50 km from the coast. A suite of neutral and ionic per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) was investigated. Urban activity was related to high levels of neutral PFASs at Tianjin while perfluorooctanoic carboxylic acid (PFOA) was dominant in the atmosphere at Weifang, possibly due to industrial sources. Polyfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid diesters (diPAPs) occurred in the particle phase only, with a total concentration range of 0.02–6.72 pg m −3 . The dominant homologue was 6:2 diPAP. PFASs profiles at NHI suggested direct atmospheric transport of neutral and ionic PFASs from source regions. Temperature-dependent partitioning of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) was observed in winter, when total concentrations and particle-phase fractions of FTOHs were significantly higher as compared to those in summer. Correlation analyses suggested more active gas-phase degradation of FTOHs in summer and likely heterogeneous degradation in both seasons. Overall, it is necessary to account for ionic PFASs in both gas and particle phases and particulate matter was important for atmospheric transport and for determining the fate of PFASs, especially in areas close to a source region. • The symplasmic phloem-unloading pathway is interrupted by an apoplasmic pathway in developing Xanthoceras sorbifolia fruit. • Sucrose influx XsSWEET10 as a key candidate is involved in sugar transport. • SUSY acts as the key enzyme catalyzing the progress of Suc degradation post-unloading pathways in pericarp and the seeds. • VINV (vacuolar acid invertase) and NINV (neutral invertase) play a compensation role in sucrose decomposition. • Sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) played more important role in sucrose synthesis in pericarp and seeds. The process of phloem unloading and post-unloading transport of photoassimilate is critical to crop output. Xanthoceras sorbifolia is a woody oil species with great biomass energy prospects in China; however, underproduction of seeds seriously restricts its development. Here, our cytological studies by ultrastructural observation revealed that the sieve element-companion cell complex in carpellary bundle was symplasmically interconnected with surrounding parenchyma cells at the early and late fruit developmental stages, whereas it was symplasmically isolated at middle stage. Consistently, real-time imaging showed that fluorescent tracer 6(5)carboxyfluorescein was confined to phloem strands at middle stage but released into surrounding parenchymal cells at early and late stages. Enzymatic assay showed that sucrose synthase act as the key enzyme catalyzing the progress of Suc degradation post-unloading pathway whether in pericarp or in seed, while vacuolar acid invertase and neutral invertase play compensation roles in sucrose decomposition. Sugar transporter XsSWEET10 had a high expression profile in fruit, especially at middle stage. XsSWEET10 is a plasma membrane-localized protein and heterologous expression in SUC2- deficient yeast strain SUSY7/ura3 confirmed its ability to uptake sucrose. Background and Objectives: Increased consumption of folic acid is prevalent, raising concerns about possible adverse effects. This prospective study aimed to explore the associations between the duration of folic acid supplementation and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Chinese women.Methods and Study Design: A total of 326 pregnant women were prospectively included for detailed information on folic acid supplementation during pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy, lipid profiles at 16-18 weeks, and subsequent GDM diagnosis at 24-28 weeks. Associations among folic acid supplementation, lipid profiles, and risk of GDM were analyzed using linear and logistic regression models, adjusting for potential confounders.Results: The incidence of GDM in participants was 10.1%. We observed a U-shape relation between duration of folic acid supplementation and risk of GDM. Women who did not take folic acid and took folic acid for >90 days had a higher incidence of GDM compared to those who took folic acid for <=60 days. Moreover, lipid profiles were positively correlated with duration of folic acid supplementation and risk of GDM. After adjusting for demographic characters, energy and nutrients intakes and lipid profiles, the adjusted OR of GDM comparing taking folic acid for >90 days with taking folic acid for <=60 days was 3.45 (95% CI: 1.01, 11.8).Conclusions: This prospective study indicate a positive association among prolonged folic acid supplementation, lipid profiles in the second trimester, and risk of GDM. Joint fertilization with organic and inorganic fertilizers contributes to sustainable crop production. However, quantitatively understanding the joint fertilization efficacy (JFE) with organic and inorganic fertilizers on yield is limited. This study aimed to investigate the quantitative JFE on crop yield. A 15-year field experiment with pea, wheat, and potato rotation was conducted on a constructed terrace in the semiarid area of the Loess Plateau of China. The fertilizer treatments imposed were (i) inorganic N and P fertilizer (NP); (ii) sheep manure (M); (iii) combined manure plus the inorganic N and P fertilizer (MNP); and (iv) unfertilized control (CK). We defined the yield increase of NP, M and MNP relative to CK (ΔY NP , ΔY M and ΔY MNP), and the JFE was calculated as Δ Y MNP − (Δ Y M + Δ Y NP) Δ Y M + Δ Y NP × 100 % When the JFE > 10%, it was considered a synergistic effect; when the JFE was between − 10% and 10%, it was a summing effect, and when the JFE < −10%, it was an offset effect. Across all years, the total crop yield averaged 6127, 3901, 3912, and 1830 kg ha-1 for MNP, M, NP, and CK, respectively. For years 2–8, the yield increases for MNP were 10%− 80% higher than the sum of M and NP (M+NP), showing a synergistic JEF. For years 9–15, the yield increase for MNP was similar or 12%− 30% less than that for M+NP, indicating the summing or offset JFE. By the 15th year, the soil organic carbon (SOC) for CK, NP, M, and MNP increased 30%, 74%, 215% and 185%, respectively, to the initial value. For years 2–8, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), soil inorganic nitrogen (IN) and available phosphorus (AP) in MNP was 20%, 106% and 163% higher than M+NP. A structural equation model analysis indicated that the synergistic JFE was mainly attributable to the rapid increase of AP and IN of MNP during the early years. With the increase in soil fertility and the gradual rise in M yield, the synergistic effect turned into an offset effect. Then the yield of NP decreased due to the soil water deficit, and the offset JEF was turned to summing. The JFE is synergistic in the early years but summing or offset later, showing that joint fertilization is not always increasing yield linearly with soil nutrient input, mainly depending on soil fertility. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the correlation of frailty status with disease characteristics and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and determine the sensitivity and specificity of modified COPD PRO scale (mCOPD-PRO) for detecting frailty., Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed 315 inpatients with AECOPD from a tertiary hospital in China from August 2022 to June 2023. Patient frailty and PROs were assessed using the validated FRAIL scale and mCOPD-PRO, respectively. Spearman's ρ was used to assess the relevance of lung disease indicators commonly used in clinical practice, and ordinal logistic regression analyses were used to identify the variables associated with frailty status. The validity of mCOPD-PRO in discriminating frail or non-frail individuals was determined using the receiver operating characteristic curve., Results: The participants (N=302, mean age 72.4±9.1 years) were predominantly males (73.2%). Among them, 43 (14.3%) patients were not frail, whereas 123 (40.7%) and 136 (45.0%) patients were pre-frail and frail, respectively. The FRAIL scale was moderately correlated with the mCOPD-PRO scores (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient [Rs]=0.52, P <0.01) for all dimensions (Rs=0.43-0.49, P <0.01). Patients residing in rural areas (odds ratio [OR], 1.67; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.01-2.76) and with higher mCOPD-PRO scores (OR, 4.78; 95% CI, 2.75-8.32) were more likely to be frail. Physically active patients (OR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.21-0.84) were less likely to be frail. In addition, mCOPD-PRO had good discriminate validity for detecting frailty (area under the curve=0.78), with a sensitivity and specificity of 84.6% and 60.8%, respectively. The optimal probability threshold for mCOPD-PRO was ≥1.52 points., Conclusion: In patients with AECOPD, frailty is closely related to PROs and disease characteristics. Additionally, the mCOPD-PRO score can distinguish well between frail and non-frail patients. China's birth rates hit a record low in 2021. The high demand for having children has spawned a massive market for surrogacy, which, however, is a dilemma in China involving a series of moral and legal issues under the current circumstances. First, special populations, including infertile patients, families who have lost their sole child, and homosexuals, wanted to have children, giving rise to surrogacy. Then, the development of and innovation in assisted reproductive technology allowed surrogacy to mature. A high return offsets a high risk, and consequently, an underground surrogacy market has emerged, causing various social issues for the Chinese Government, such as civil disputes, gender disproportion, crime, and the spread of disease. At the same time, surrogacy violates moral ethics, traditional Chinese culture, and the rights and interests of vulnerable groups.

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many healthcare organizations to stop the placement of undergraduate nursing students. As a result, undergraduate nursing students need the necessary training and practice to increase their competency. Therefore, effective strategies are needed to improve the effectiveness of online internships. This study aims to evaluate the impact of online cardiovascular health behavior modification training on nursing undergraduate students' health education competency and clinical decision-making perceptions using the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) model., Methods: This study utilized quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent control group design. Nursing students undergoing internships at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China, from June 2020 to December 2021 were enrolled in this study. The participants were allocated into two groups, experimental and control groups. All participants completed a course designed to promote healthy behavior modification. The experimental group participants completed four modules through an online training course based on the CDIO model. The control group was given theoretical lectures on the same topic online. Health education competencies and clinical decision-making perceptions were assessed before and after the training. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS 28.0., Results: A significant difference was observed between these two groups in their performance on the theoretical test (t = -2.291, P<0.05) and operational assessment (t = -6.415, P<0.01). The participants in the experimental group scored better than those in the control group. Post-test results indicated that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly better health education competency (t = -3.601, P<0.01) and clinical decision-making perception (t = -3.726, P<0.01)., Conclusion: The study found that online courses based on the CDIO model are compelling. The study concluded that online classes are needed during the pandemic as it does not limit time and space. Nursing students can take their internship from anywhere as long as they can access the internet. Environmental factors can promote genetic divergence among populations. The Tarim Basin has experienced a series of environmental and geological changes since the late Pliocene. Phrynocephalus forsythii (Agamidae) has a continuous and circular distribution around the Tarim Basin, and the evolutionary history of this species remains unclear. In the present study, mitochondrial DNA and single nucleotide polymorphism sequences were obtained from 195 P. forsythii samples in the Tarim Basin to examine the phylogeographic structure and evolutionary history of this species. All populations of P. forsythii formed three distinct clusters: the Minfeng, low-elevation, and high-elevation groups. The Minfeng group was the first to separate from all other groups at 4.26 Ma after the original desert environment emerged in the Tarim Basin. The uplift of the Kunlun Mountains created a new high-altitude environment along the southwestern edge of the basin and promoted the divergence of low-elevation and high-elevation groups at 3.67 Ma. Subsequently, the gradual development of deserts and rivers in the Tarim Basin accelerated the dispersal of P. forsythii, eventually forming the current distribution pattern. To explore the relationship between risk prediction of diabetes mellitus (DM) and different physical fitness parameters in municipal in-service personnel in Guangxi.This was a cross-sectional study conducted in China from July 2015 to December 2016. We enrolled in-service adults (20-65 year of age) from public institutions. All subjects underwent National Physical Fitness Test (NPFT) and EZSCAN screening.The 5668 subjects were 42.9±12.3 years; 2984 (52.6%) were male; 3998 (70.5%), 1579 (27.9%) and 85 (1.6%) were Han, Zhuang, and other ethnicities, respectively. The multivariable analysis showed that systolic blood pressure (odds ratio [OR] = 1.013, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.003-1.022, P = .01), Harvard step test index (OR = 0.958, 95% CI: 0.941-0.976, P <.001), bend-ahead in sitting (OR = 0.945, 95% CI: 0.926-0.963, P <.001), hand grip strength (OR = 0.981, 95% CI: 0.966-0.997, P = .02), vertical jump height (OR = 0.969, 95% CI: 0.944-0.996, P = .02), time of single-leg standing with eyes closed (OR = 0.981, 95% CI: 0.968-0.995, P = .007), choice reaction time (OR = 2.103, 95% CI: 1.261-3.507, P = .004), and body composition minerals (OR = 1.649, 95% CI: 1.261-1.813, P < .001) were independently associated with DM. The resulting equation for the prediction of DM had an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.808, indicating good predictive ability.NPFT and EZSCAN could help predict the risk of diabetes and give early warnings to undertake preventive actions such as changing diet and performing physical activity.

A newly developed solid-phase extraction cartridge composed of mixed sorbents was optimized for collection of both neutral and ionizable per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in indoor air. Eighty-one indoor air samples and 29 indoor dust samples were collected from rooms of homes and hotels, textile shops, and cinemas in Tianjin, China. Fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) were the predominant PFASs found in air (250-82 300 pg/m 3 ) and hotel dust (24.8-678 ng/g). Polyfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid diesters were found at lower levels of nd-125 pg/m 3 in air and 0.32-183 ng/g in dust. Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) were dominant ionizable PFASs in air samples (121-20 600 pg/m 3 ) with C4-C7 PFCAs contributing to 54% ± 17% of the profiles, suggesting an ongoing shift to short-chain PFASs. Long-chain PFCAs (C > 7) were strongly correlated and the intermediate metabolite of FTOHs, fluorotelomer unsaturated carboxylic acids, occurred in all the air samples at concentrations up to 413 pg/m 3 , suggesting the transformation of precursors such as FTOHs in indoor environment. Daily intake of ∑PFASs via air inhalation and dust ingestion was estimated at 1.04-14.1 ng/kg bw/d and 0.10-8.17 ng/kg bw/d, respectively, demonstrating that inhalation of air with fine suspended particles was a more important direct exposure pathway than dust ingestion for PFASs to adults.

A total of 23 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were investigated in the air, dry deposition, and plant leaves at two different landfills and one suburban reference site in Tianjin, China. The potential of landfills as sources of PFASs to the atmosphere and the phase distribution therein were evaluated. The maximum concentrations of ∑PFASs in the two landfills were up to 9.5 ng/m 3 in the air, 4.1 μg/g in dry deposition, and 48 μg/g lipid in leaves with trifluoroacetic acid and perfluoropropionic acid being dominant (71%-94%). Spatially, the distribution trend of ionizable and neutral PFASs in all three kinds of media consistently showed the central landfill > the downwind > the upwind > the reference sites, indicating that landfills are important sources to PFASs in the environment. Plant leaves were found effective in uptake of a variety of airborne PFASs including polyfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid diesters, thus capable of acting as a passive air sampling approach for air monitoring.
