Background and Aims: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a crippling, chronic, gender‐related disease that causes burdens to individuals and society. China has a considerable and increasing population of MS. We aim to analyze the gender disparities in the burden of MS in China and predict the trends. Methods: The study was conducted based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Data on incidence, prevalence, deaths, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) of MS in China from 1990 to 2019 was descriptively analyzed by year, gender, and age group. The Nordpred package in R (version 4.2.2) was used for age‐period‐cohort analysis to predict the all‐ages numbers and age‐standardized rates of incidence, prevalence, deaths, and DALYs in China from 2020 to 2044. Results: The number of prevalent cases of MS in 2019 reached 18,143.56 (95% uncertainty intervals [UI]: 13,997.71–22,658.60) in males and 24,427.11 (95% UI: 18,906.02–30,530.21) in females in China. The peak age of prevalence was shifted from 40–44 years in 1990 to 45–49 years in 2019 in females but remained unchanged in males. In contrast to the increased age‐standardized prevalence rate, the age‐standardized death rate (ASDR) and age‐standardized DALYs rate showed downward trends, which were more significant in females. Different from the global, Chinese males showed lower prevalence but higher deaths and DALYs than females for age‐standardized rates and numbers. In the next 25 years, the patient population will remain large and peak around 44,599.78 in 2025–2029. The ASDR, age‐standardized DALYs rate, and DALYs number were expected to decrease. The improvements in deaths and DALYs will be more significant in females. Conclusion: Males with MS had a lower prevalence but higher deaths and DALYs than females in China. The ASDR and age‐standardized DALYs rate have reduced over the past 30 years and were expected to continue decreasing, especially in females. Precipitation is an essential element in earth system research, which greatly benefits from the emergence of Satellite Precipitation Products (SPPs). Therefore, assessment of the accuracy of the SPPs is necessary both scientifically and practically. The Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) is one of the most widely used SPPs in the scientific community. However, there is a lack of comprehensive evaluation for the performance of the newly released IMERG Version 07, which is essential for determining its effectiveness and reliability in precipitation estimation. In this study, we compare the IMERG V07 Final Run (V07_FR) with its predecessor IMERG V06_FR across scales from January 2016 to December 2020 over the globe (cross-compare their similarities and differences) and a focused study on mainland China (validate against 2481 rain gauges). The results show that: (1) Globally, the annual mean precipitation of V07_FR increases 2.2% compared to V06_FR over land but decreases 5.8% over the ocean. The two SPPs further exhibit great differences as indicated by the Critical Success Index (CSI = 0.64) and the Root Mean Squared Difference (RMSD = 3.42 mm/day) as compared to V06_FR to V07_FR. (2) Over mainland China, V06_FR and V07_FR detect comparable precipitation annually. However, the Probability of Detection (POD) improves by 5.0%, and the RMSD decreases by 3.7% when analyzed by grid cells. Further, the POD (+0%~+6.1%) and CSI (+0%~+8.8%) increase and the RMSD (−11.1%~0%) decreases regardless of the sub-regions. (3) Under extreme rainfall rates, V07_FR measures 4.5% lower extreme rainfall rates than V06_FR across mainland China. But V07_FR tends to detect more accurate extreme precipitation at both daily and event scales. The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (1056 AD), located in Shanxi province, China, is a unique architectural pure-wooden artifact standing for a millennium. Despite its longevity, the structures and properties of the ancient architectural woods used in its construction have been significantly degraded due to long-term natural aging, which has profoundly impacted the preservation of this valuable cultural heritage. To better understand this degradation, we studied the deterioration of a baluster (Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr.) from Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. The study employed various analytical techniques, including optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nanoindentation technology, to evaluate the microstructures and properties of the ancient architectural woods. Results indicated that the destruction of wood cell walls was primarily transverse transwall destruction and interfacial debonding and that the degradation of chemical components was primarily in the hemicellulose (xylan) and amorphous region of cellulose. The reduced elastic modulus and hardness of tracheid cell walls in the ancient architectural woods were higher than in recent larch woods. This study would help deepen understanding of wood deterioration during long-term natural aging for the subsequent preservation and protection of wooden cultural heritages and longer use of ancient timber constructions. Today, more and more Internet public media platforms allowing people to make donations or seek help are being founded in China. However, there are few specialized sports-related public welfare platforms. In this paper, a sports-related public welfare platform that aims to help people who were disabled due to participation in sports and those who are disabled but want to participate in sports was developed based on multi-sensor technology. A multi-sensor data fusion algorithm was developed, and its estimation performance was verified by comparing it with the existing Kalman consistent filtering algorithm in terms of average estimation and average consistency errors. Experimental results prove that the speed of the data collection and analysis of the sports-related public welfare platform using the algorithm established in this paper was greatly improved. Relevant data on how users used this platform showed that various factors affected users' practical satisfaction with sports-related public welfare media platforms. It is suggested that a sports-related public welfare media platform should pay attention to the aid effect, and specific efforts should be devoted to improving the reliability and timeliness of public welfare aid information, and ensuring the stability of the platform system. In recent years, with the advance of Artificial Intelligence, automatic music composition has been demonstrated. However, there are many music genres and music instruments. For a same piece of music, different music instruments would produce different effects. Invented some 2500 years ago, Guzheng is one of the oldest music instruments in China and the world. It has distinct timbres and patterns that cannot be duplicated by other music instruments. Therefore, it is interesting to see whether AI can compose Guzheng music or alike. In this paper we present a method that can automatically compose and play Guzheng music. First, we collect a number of existing Guzheng music pieces and convert them into Music Instrument Digital Interface format. Second, we use these data to train a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network and use the trained network to generate new Guzheng music pieces. Next, we use the Reinforcement Learning to optimize the LSTM network by adding special Guzheng playing techniques. Comparing to the existing AI methods, such as LSTM and Generative Adversary Network, our new method is more effective in capturing the characteristics of Guzheng music. According to the evaluations from skilled Guzheng players and general audiences, our Guzheng music is very close to the real Guzheng music. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common types of cancers in South China and Southeast Asia. Clinical data has shown that early detection is essential for improving treatment effectiveness and survival rate. Unfortunately, because the early symptoms of NPC are rather minor and similar to that of diseases such as Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS), early detection is a challenge. This paper proposes using machine learning methods to detect NPC using routine medical test data, namely Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), k-Nearest-Neighbor (KNN) and Logistic Regression (LR). We collected a dataset containing 523 newly diagnosed NPC patients before treatment, 501 newly diagnosed CRS patients before treatment as well as 600 healthy controls. The routine medical test data including age, gender, blood test features, liver function test features, and urine sediment test features. For comparison, we also used data from Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) antibody tests, which is a specialized test not included among routine medical tests. In our first test, all four methods were tested on classifying NPC vs CRS vs controls; RF gives the best overall performance. Using only routine medical test data, it gives an accuracy of 83.1%, outperforming LR by 12%. In our second test, using only routine medical test data, when classifying NPC vs non-NPC (i.e. CRS or controls), RF achieves an accuracy of 88.2%. In our third test, when classifying NPC vs. controls, RF using only routine test data achieves an accuracy significantly better than RF using only EBV antibody data. Finally, in our last test, RF trained with NPC vs controls, using routine test data only, continued to perform well on an entirely separate dataset. This is a promising result because preliminary NPC detection using routine medical data is easy and inexpensive to implement. Objective. Nicorandil has been widely used for the treatment of angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether nicorandil plays a protective role in exhaustive exercise (EE)-induced myocardial injury. Methods. Here, we applied the rat EE model and treated them with exercise preconditioning (EP, reported to protect the heart) or different doses of nicorandil gavage, respectively, to explore whether there are protective effects of single EP or nicorandil or a combination of both and the potential mechanism. Forty-nine male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into control, EE, EP + EE, nicorandil (with low, middle, and high dose) + EE, and EP + nicorandil (middle dose) + EE. Blood samples and myocardial tissues were collected to analyze the myocardial injury-related index. Results. EE induced myocardial structural damage and altered the myocardial injury markers, which were partially reversed by pretreatment of nicorandil. In addition, oxidative stress and inflammation lead to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) products and further damage to the myocardium, while pretreatment of nicorandil reduces the oxidative stress response and inflammation. Moreover, nicorandil suppressed the myocardial apoptosis induced by EE, as indicated by a decrease of Bax and caspase-3 expression and an increase of Bcl-2 expression. Finally, the pathway in which nicorandil plays a role may be involved in the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)/nitric oxide (NO) pathway. Pretreatment of nicorandil increased the protein level of myocardial eNOS and NO production. Conclusion. Our result demonstrated that nicorandil has protective effects in EE-induced myocardial injury with dose-dependent effects. A combination of nicorandil and EP can further improve the protective effects. Taken together, nicorandil can be potentially used as an intervention method in EE-induced myocardial injury. Purpose: To assess the accuracy of biometric parameters measured by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and partial coherence interferometry (PCI) in prediction of effective lens position (ELP) compared with previous formulas in PACG patients.Methods: 121 PACG eyes were randomly divided into training set (85 eyes) and validation set (36 eyes) with same procedure including AS-OCT, PCI, phacoemulsification and IOL implantation surgery. Preoperative anterior chamber depth (pre-ACD), scleral spur depth (SSD), scleral spur width (SSW), lens vault (LV) and cornea thickness (CT) were measured from AS-OCT image. Axial length (AL) and corneal power (K) were measured by PCI. All the 7 parameters were analyzed by multiple linear regression in training set and a statistic regression formula was developed. In validation set, one-way ANOVA was applied to compare the new regression formula with Sanders-Retzlaff-Kraff theoretic (SRK/T), Holladay 1, Haigis, and a regression formula developed in previous study.Results: The coefficient of determination (R2) of different parameter combinations are 0.19 (pre-ACD, AL), 0.25 (AL, K) and 0.49 (SSD, AL, SSW) in training set. In validation set, the correlation between predicted and measured ELP are: new formula (R2 = 0.50, P = 0.9947) Holladay 1 (R2 = 0.12, P < 0.0001), SRK/T (R2 = 0.11, P < 0.0001) and Haigis (R2 = 0.06, P < 0.0001).Conclusion: Among 7 tested parameters, pre-ACD contribute little in ELP prediction. Aim: To investigate the relationship between hemoglobin levels and the progression of IgA nephropathy (IgAN).Methods: In a two-center cohort of 1,828 cases with biopsy-proven IgAN, we examined the association of hemoglobin levels with the primary outcome of a composite of all-cause mortality or kidney failure defined as a 40% decline in eGFR, or ESKD (defined as eGFR <15 mL/min/1.73 m2 or need for kidney replacement therapy including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplantation), or the outcome of kidney failure, assessed using Cox and logistic regression models, respectively, with adjustment for confounders.Results: At baseline, mean age, eGFR, and hemoglobin levels were 33.75 ± 11.03 years, 99.70 ± 30.40 mL/min/1.73 m2, and 123.47 ± 18.36 g/L, respectively. During a median of approximately 7-year follow-up, 183 cases reached the composite outcome. After adjustment for demographic and IgAN-specific covariates and treatments, a lower quartile of hemoglobin was nonlinearly associated with an increased risk of the primary outcome or kidney failure in the Cox proportional hazards models (primary outcome: HR for quartile 3 vs. 4, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.83-2.25; HR for quartile 2 vs. 4, 1.18; 95% CI, 0.68-2.07; HR for quartile 1 vs. 4, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.15-3.17; kidney failure: HR for quartile 3 vs. 4, 1.39; 95% CI, 0.84-2.31; HR for quartile 2 vs. 4, 1.20; 95% CI, 0.68-2.11; HR for quartile 1 vs. 4, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.09-3.07) in the fully adjusted model. Then, hemoglobin levels were transformed to a binary variable for fitting the model according to the criteria for anemia of 110 g/L in the women and 120 g/L in men in China. The participants in the anemia group had an increased risk of developing outcomes compared with the nonanemia group in both genders (primary outcome: male: HR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.01-2.68; female: HR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.02-2.76; kidney failure: male: HR, 1.60; 95% CI, 0.97-2.64; female: HR, 1.58; 95% CI, 0.95-2.61) in the fully adjusted model.Conclusions: A low level of hemoglobin was nonlinearly associated with IgAN progression. Background: To investigate the prevalence of pterygium and associated factors in Han and Mongolian adults at four survey sites in Inner Mongolia, China.Methods: We conducted a population-based, cross-sectional study as part of the China National Health Survey (CNHS). By means of a stratified sampling method, we finally included 2651 participants of 30 years of age or older from a total of 3468 eligible residents. Factors associated with pterygium were analysed by a univariate analysis and logistic regression models.Results: The study population included 1910 Han and 741 Mongolian adults. The mean age ± standard deviation of the study cohort was 48.93 ± 11.06 years. The overall prevalence of pterygium was 6.4% (n = 169); 1.4% (n = 38) of the cases were bilateral and 4.8% (n = 128) were unilateral. The most common grade of pterygium was Grade 2. Based on the results of the univariate analysis, eleven factors were included in a multivariate analysis. The results indicated that age (P < 0.001), outdoor occupation (P = 0.026), and time spent in rural areas (P < 0.001) were significantly associated with pterygium. Sex and ethnicity were not identified as risk factors.Conclusions: Our results indicated that outdoor occupation, old age and more time spent in rural areas were risk factors for pterygium in Inner Mongolia. At the same time, town as a survey site (Hohhot and Tsining District) was a protective factor for pterygium. Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN), characterized by rapid kidney dysfunction caused by aggressive glomerulonephritis, is usually associated with crescentic glomerulonephritis (CrGN). In the present study, the data from patients with CrGN were retrospectively analyzed at a tertiary medical center in China with the aim of investigating the clinicopathological features and the association of the type of CrGN with the prognosis. The renal biopsies of 49 patients diagnosed with CrGN were obtained between December 2011 and July 2016. Of the 49 patients, 11 patients (22.45%) had type I CrGN, 19 (38.78%) had type II CrGN and 19 (38.78%) had type III CrGN. The majority of CrGN patients exhibited multiple-system involvement and 28 patients (57.14%) had kidney enlargement. Proportions of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI), acute kidney diseases without AKI, and chronic kidney disease were 28.57, 46.94 and 24.49%, respectively. Among the 3 types of CrGN, patients with type I CrGN tended to have a higher proportion of AKI with more cellular crescent formation, and higher serum creatinine and retinol binding protein. Circulating anti-GBM antibodies were present in all type I CrGN patients and anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic autoantibodies were detected in 84.21% of patients with type III CrGN. Type III CrGN patients had a superior kidney survival, whereas type I CrGN patients had the worst kidney prognosis (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in overall patient survival among the 3 types of CrGN. CrGN remains the primary cause of critical illness in RPGN patients. Background: Few studies have investigated the prevalence of refractive error (RE) in older adults in China, and most have focused on East China. Our study determined the prevalence and risk factors of RE in Han and Yi adults aged 40-80 years in rural and urban areas in Yunnan Province, Southwest China.Methods: Our cross-sectional study is part of the China National Health Survey (CNHS). The age-adjusted prevalence rates of RE in Han and Yi adults aged 40-80 years in Yunnan were compared. We used a multivariate logistic regression model to identify risk factors for myopia and hyperopia.Results: Among 1626 participants, the age-adjusted prevalence rates of myopia, hyperopia, high myopia and astigmatism were 26.35% (95%CI 24.01-28.70%), 19.89% (95%CI 18.16-21.61%), 2.64% (95%CI 1.75-3.53%), and 56.82% (95%CI 54.31-59.34%). Compared to the Yi population, the Han population had higher prevalence of myopia (31.50% vs 16.80%, p < 0.0001), high myopia (3.34% vs 1.31%, p = 0.049) and astigmatism (60.07% vs 50.67%, p = 0.026) but lower prevalence of hyperopia (16.58% vs 27.37%, p < 0.0001). In the multivariate logistic regression, individuals aged 45-49 (p < 0.001), 50-54 (p < 0.001), 55-59 (p = 0.014), and 60-64 years (p = 0.005) had a lower myopia risk than those aged 40-44 years, and individuals aged 50-54 (p = 0.002), 55-59, 60-64 and 65 years and older (all p < 0.001) had a higher hyperopia risk than those aged 40-44 years. Myopia was also associated with height (p = 0.035), time spent in rural areas (p = 0.014), undergraduate/graduate education level (p = 0.001, compared with primary school or lower education level) and diabetes (p = 0.008). The Yi population had a higher risk of hyperopia than the Han population (p = 0.025). Moreover, hyperopia was related to time spent in rural areas (p < 0.001) and pterygium (p = 0.019).Conclusions: Our study investigated the overall prevalence of RE in older adults in rural and urban areas of Southwest China. Compared to the Yi population, the Han population had a higher prevalence of myopia, high myopia and astigmatism but a lower risk of hyperopia. The prevalence of myopia in the Han population in underdeveloped Southwest China was similar to that of residents in East China or of Chinese Singaporeans under urban or rural settings. In order to explore the impact of governmental low-carbon environmental policy on manufacturing/remanufacturing technology choice and to promote resources recycling and reusing, an automotive parts manufacturing/ remanufacturing system dynamics model of technology choice with the consideration of government incenting low carbon policy like carbon tax and subsidies is built. Based on simulation analysis of carbon tax and subsidies scenarios, we find that it is necessary to strengthen the government environmental policy enforcement to guide and promote the auto parts companies to choose low-carbon remanufacturing technology and to promote the development of China's automobile manufacturing industry. Among them, the combination of carbon taxes and subsidies policy may be a good policy to lead enterprises to choose remanufacturing. But the remanufacturing industry in China is just at the preliminary stage, the government need to strengthen environment conservation education and to standardize the recycling market in order to speed up the healthy development of Chinese auto parts remanufacturing industry. This article presents findings of a narrative analysis of the lateral use of models by Chinese public opinion generators to shape the behaviours of the people. It begins with lexical, sociological and narratological explanations of the meaning of a Chinese model, before presenting a general introduction of Chinese models as a phenomenon, including the hype usually involved in their making and propagating. It then proceeds to a narrative analysis of the singular good-sounding story usually told by Chinese models. The focus of the article, though, is a narrative case study based on a prolonged search for a model named Cadeer, an ethnic Uyghur from Xinjiang Autonomous Region and on his deferred final discovery. From this, the author presents several arguments. First, Cadeer does not tell a typical good-sounding story. Second, not retelling the good-sounding story deferred his final discovery. Third, his deferred but eventual rise to modeldom is an indication of the continued obsession with the use of models for mass persuasion in China, a sign of changing times and of the changing media environment in the country, as well as a reflection of its ever-intensifying interethnic tension. This paper summarized the situation of New Zealand's wool production and Sino-New Zealand bilateral trade in wool, introduced the wool quality management and inspection in New Zealand, analyzed the status of inspection of imported wool in China, further proposed some suggestions on inspection and supervision of imported wool: firstly, make positive change in the inspection and supervision mode, based on the sorted management of imported products; secondly, further strengthen system of quality analysis and report of unqualified case; thirdly, reinforce the layout and adjustment of wool laboratories inner Entry-Exit branches; fourthly, improve quality assurance system of wool inspection. The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the Bactrocera cheni (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae) are sequenced and annotated. The mitochondrial genome is 15,945 bp (GenBank No. MN883026), with A + T% for the whole sequence = 73.0% (38.9% A, 16.4% C, 10.6% G, and 34.1% T), which is the classical structure for insect mitogenome. All PCGs started with ATN except ATP8; 9 PCGs use TAA as the stop codon, and others use TAG as the stop codon. The phylogenetic tree confirms that B. cheni and B. tsuneonis are not clade into one branch with strongly supported. And Pairwise Identity is 80.0% between B. cheni and B. tsuneonis. In antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV), the two major target antigens of ANCA are proteinase 3 (PR3) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Evidence is accumulating that there are distinct differences between patients with PR3-AAV and those with MPO-AAV. In the present study, the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients with PR3-AAV and MPO-AAV from a single center in China were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 212 Chinese patients with AAV were recruited in the present study; 189/212 (89.15%) patients were classified as having MPO-AAV and 23/212 (10.85%) patients as having PR3-AAV. Compared with those in the PR3-AAV group, patients in the MPO-AAV group were older and less frequently had ear, nose and throat or ophthalmic involvement. MPO-AAV patients had higher levels of serum creatinine and proteinuria at baseline. No significant difference was observed with regard to the pathological changes of the glomeruli and tubulointerstitium between the two groups. The probability of developing end-stage renal disease was significantly higher in patients with MPO-AAV compared with that in patients with PR3-AAV. There was no significant difference in the one-year patient survival rate between the two groups. However, differences in certain clinical characteristics and outcomes were observed between MPO-AAV and PR3-AAV patients. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) has become a popular engineered wood product, mainly prepared from imported wood in China. More extensive research is needed to improve the local production of cross-laminated timber with fast-growing coniferous wood species. Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) and one component polyurethane (1C-PUR) adhesive were selected to prepare CLT under different process parameters. International standard methods, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (LM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and nanoindentation (NI) were applied. The bonding performance and failure mechanism of Chinese fir CLT were investigated and clarified. The results showed that the optimal gluing parameters for preparing CLT from Chinese fir wood were 160 g/m2 of glue, 0.9 MPa of pressure, and 180 minutes of pressing time. Failure of CLT made from Chinese fir lumber was mainly due to the shear failure of the vertical layer board. Cracks often appeared in the earlywood cells near the boundary between earlywood and latewood. The Fourier transform infrared spectrometer was used to measure the emissivity of natural surface objects in Shuixigou coalfield fires area of Xinjiang. The smooth spectral iterative method was used to separate the temperature and emissivity, and the accurate temperature and emissivity of the surface objects were obtained. The thermal infrared emissivity spectral characteristics of seven typical types natural surface objects were analyzed, and five ASTER thermal infrared bands were selected to conduct the data simulation. The results show that: 1 The characteristics of thermal infrared emissivity spectrum show distinct differences in wavelength range of 8 ~ 13 µ m, especially in 8. 5 ~ 10,11.3 and 12~13 µm. Therefore these bands can be used as identifying characteristics of different bands; 2 Emissivity spectrum shows a characteristic difference at five ASTER thermal infrared bands it is practically useful in the process of using remote sensing images to extract information for surface objects in coalfield fires areas; 3 The emissivity can provide surface temperature retrieval with a precise parameter, so as to improve precision of temperature retrieval. Intention: Immunosuppressive therapy is the major treatment approach for patients with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV). Due to impaired cellular immunological function and the use of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants, AAV patients are predisposed to opportunistic infections, including tuberculosis (TB). This retrospective study aims to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with AAV and TB and explore suitable glucocorticoid regimens for them. So as to provide a basis for future clinical guidelines and have important value for guiding clinical treatment., Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 58 AAV patients (18-80 years old) with TB admitted to Changsha Central Hospital Affiliated with the University of South China from 2016.1 to 2023.4 Patients were divided into standard-dose and reduced-dose glucocorticoid groups before retrospectively analyzing their medical records., Results: A total of 58 AAV patients with TB were enrolled, with 15 dying throughout the monitoring period. Through analysis data, compared with the standard-dose group, the reduced group had less proteinuria and hematuria. In survival analysis, the reduced-dose glucocorticoid group had lower mortality than the standard-dose group (P = 0.03); however, no significant difference was noted in the use of immunoglobulin (P = 0.39), tuberculosis activity (P = 0.64), and age stratification (P = 0.40). The BVAS score before treatment and 6 months post-treatment suggest that the two regimens cause the same risk of ESKD (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: In conclusion, the reduced glucocorticoid dose group can achieve the same curative effect as the standard dose group and has less damage to the kidney in hematuria and proteinuria. Introduction: Acute aortic syndrome (AAS) is a group of acute and critical conditions, including acute aortic dissection (AAD), acute intramural haematoma and penetrating aortic ulcer. High mortality and morbidity rates result in a poor patient prognosis. Prompt diagnoses and timely interventions are paramount for saving patients' lives. In recent years, risk models for AAD have been established worldwide; however, a risk evaluation system for AAS is still lacking in China. Therefore, this study aims to develop an early warning and risk scoring system in combination with the novel potential biomarker soluble ST2 (sST2) for AAS., Methods and Analysis: This multicentre, prospective, observational study will recruit patients diagnosed with AAS at three tertiary referral centres from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2023. We will analyse the discrepancies in sST2 levels in patients with different AAS types and explore the accuracy of sST2 in distinguishing between them. We will also incorporate potential risk factors and sST2 into a logistic regression model to establish a logistic risk scoring system for predicting postoperative death and prolonged intensive care unit stay in patients with AAS., Ethics and Dissemination: This study was registered on the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry website (http://www. chictr. org. cn/). Data on anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) are limited in children. This study is to determine the clinical features and outcomes of childhood-onset AAV. A retrospective study was performed on patients who were diagnosed with AAV before 18 years old in Xiangya Hospital. Their medical records were analyzed by retrospective review. Sixteen patients were diagnosed with AAV before 18 years old in the past 9 years, with an average age of 13.3 ± 3.3 years and 13 of them were female. There were 15 patients with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and 1 with Wegener's granulomatosis. The interval between onset of disease and diagnosis of AAV was 2 (1.5-3) months. Most patients (15/16, 93.8%) had multi-organ involvement, and all patients had renal involvement with 7 (43.8%) patients requiring dialysis at presentation. Eleven patients underwent a renal biopsy, of which mixed class and sclerotic class were the most two common histological types. All patients received immunosuppressive therapy for induction therapy including intravenous administrations of methylprednisolone (MP) pulse therapy for 8 patients. 8 patients (50%) achieved remission after induction therapy. After a median follow-up of 46.3 ± 36.1 months, nine (56.3%) patients progressed to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and 5 (31.3%) patients died. Childhood-onset AAV showed similar clinical and pathological features compared to those of adults, except that it usually occurs in girls. The most commonly involved organ was the kidney, and it had a high risk of progression to ESRD. Objectives: Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has recently been investigated as a new inflammatory marker in many inflammatory diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus and immunoglobulin A vasculitis. However, there were very few reports regarding the clinical role of PLR in patients with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) associated vasculitis. This study was thus undertaken to investigate the relationship between inflammatory response and disease activity in Chinese patients with myeloperoxidase-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPO-ANCA) associated vasculitis. Furthermore, we evaluated whether PLR predicts the progression of end stage of renal disease (ESRD) and all-cause mortality., Methods: The clinical, laboratory and pathological data, and the outcomes of MPO-ANCA associated vasculitis patients were collected. The Spearman correlation coefficient was computed to examine the association between 2 continuous variables. Cox regression analysis was used to estimate the association between PLR and ESRD or all-cause mortality., Results: A total of 190 consecutive patients with MPO-ANCA associated vasculitis were included in this study. Baseline PLR was positively correlated with CRP ( r =0.333, P <0.001) and ESR ( r =0.218, P =0.003). PLR had no obvious correlation with Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS). Patients having PLR≥330 exhibited better cumulative renal survival rates than those having PLR<330 ( P =0.017). However, there was no significant difference in the cumulative patient survival rates between patients with PLR≥330 and those with PLR<330 at diagnosis ( P >0.05). In multivariate analysis, PLR is associated with the decreased risk of ESRD ( P =0.038, HR=0.518, 95% CI 0.278 to 0.963). We did not find an association between PLR with all-cause mortality using multivariate analysis (HR=1.081, 95% CI 0.591 to 1.976, P =0.801)., Conclusions: PLR is positively correlated with CRP and ESR. Furthermore, PLR may independently predict the risk of ESRD.

Purpose: Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) is predominantly a disease of the elderly, and the incidence increases with age. However, there are few data focusing on the clinical features in elderly onset AAV, especially in very elderly onset AAV in China. The aim of this study was to explore whether elderly onset AAV shows any specific clinical features and outcomes in Chinese patients., Methods: We performed a retrospective study in Xiangya Hospital, a mixed tertiary medical center in south China. A total of 177 patients presenting with AAV were included between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2017. Patients were divided into younger group (age < 65 years) and older group (age ≥ 65 years) which was sub-divided into elderly group (age 65-74 years) and very elderly group (age ≥ 75 years). And their medical records were analyzed by retrospective review., Results: We found patients in the very elderly group had more chest and cardiovascular involvement (P = 0.033 and P = 0.017). Older AAV patients had less renal involvement and lower serum C4 level (P = 0.013 and P = 0.003). Very elderly AAV patients had lower platelet counts. Patients in the younger group had a higher level of BVAS among three groups (P < 0.05 younger group vs. very elderly group; P < 0.05 younger group vs. elderly group). There were no significant difference in the proportion of ESRD patients among the three groups (P = 0.473). Patients in the very elderly group had the poorest patient survival (P = 0.002)., Conclusion: Older AAV patients had less renal involvement, lower serum C4 level and BVAS. Background: Our study aimed to explore the prevalence and risk factors of refractive error (RE) in Han and Tibetan population aged 50-79 years in Xining and surrounding areas in Qinghai Province on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau., Methods: As part of the China National Health Survey, our cross-sectional study compared the age-adjusted prevalence of RE in Han and Tibetan older adults aged 50-79 years in Xining and surrounding areas. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors for myopia and hyperopia., Results: Among 769 Han participants and 476 Tibetan participants, the age-adjusted prevalence of myopia (spherical equivalent (SE) < - 0.5D), hyperopia (SE > + 0.5D), high myopia (SE < -6.0D) and astigmatism (cylindrical equivalent > = 0.5D) is 28.56, 22.82, 2.80, and 69.38%. Han participants have higher age-adjusted prevalence of myopia (32.93% vs 21.64%, p < 0.001), high myopia (3.93% vs 1.02%, p = 0.001) and astigmatism (72.14% vs 64.94%, p = 0.021) compared to Tibetan participants. Being Tibetan is the protective factor of myopia compared to being Han (OR 0.58, 95%CI 0.42-0.79, p < 0.001). Older age (p = 0.032), longer time length in rural area (p = 0.048), undergraduate/graduate education level (p = 0.031), lighter active level (p = 0.007) and lower BMI (p = 0.015) are risk factors for myopia. Older age (all p < 0.001) and pterygium status of the same eye (p = 0.013) also increase the hyperopia risk., Conclusions: Our study found an overall prevalence of myopia of 28.56% in Xining and surrounding areas in adults older than 50 years. Han population has higher myopia risk than Tibetan population. More medical and social resources should be allocated to improve the vision and life quality of older adults.

ABCA4 gene associated retinal dystrophies (ABCA4-RD) are a group of inherited eye diseases caused by ABCA4 gene mutations, including Stargardt disease, cone-rod dystrophy and retinitis pigmentosa. With the development of next-generation sequencing (NGS), numerous clinical and genetic studies on ABCA4-RD have been performed, and the genotype and phenotype spectra have been elucidated. However, most of the studies focused on the Caucasian population and limited studies of large Chinese ABCA4-RD cohorts were reported. In this study, we summarized the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of 129 Chinese patients with ABCA4-RD. We found a mutation spectrum of Chinese patients which is considerably different from that of the Caucasian population and identified 35 novel ABCA4 mutations. We also reported some rare and special cases, such as, pedigrees with patients in two generations, patients diagnosed with cone-rod dystrophy or retinitis pigmentosa, patients with subretinal fibrosis and patients with preserved foveal structure. At the same time, we focused on the correlation between the genotypes and phenotypes. By the comprehensive analysis of multiple clinical examinations and the application of multiple regression analysis, we proved that patients with two "null" variants had a younger onset age and reached legal blindness earlier than patients with two "none-null" variants. Patients with one or more "none-null" variants tended to have better visual acuity and presented with milder fundus autofluorescence changes and more preserved rod functions on the full-field electroretinography than patients with two "null" variants. Furthermore, most patients with the p.(Phe2188Ser) variant shared a mild phenotype with a low fundus autofluorescence signal limited to the fovea and with normal full-field electroretinography responses. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence, ethnic differences and associated risk factors of myopic maculopathy in Han and Uygur adults in Xinjiang, China., Design and Setting: A cross-sectional study with multistage, stratified cluster sampling method was conducted in Xinjiang, China., Participants: A total of 4023 Han and Uygur participants aged 40 years and older were eligible for the study., Outcome Measures: The association between myopic maculopathy and its risk factors was screened using the generalised estimating equation (GEE) model. We also investigated whether ethnic differences exist between Han and Uygur populations affected by myopic maculopathy. Myopic maculopathy was defined in accordance with International Photographic Classification and Grading System for Myopic Maculopathy., Results: A total of 3044 subjects (5946 eyes) were included in our study (1736 Han and 1308 Uygur individuals). The participants consisted of 1256 (41.3%) men and 1788 (58.7%) women. The average age was 52.2±9.4 years, and the mean spherical equivalent (SE) was -0.18±2.31 dioptre (D). Myopic maculopathy was detected in 198 eyes of 138 participants. The age-adjusted prevalence of myopic maculopathy reached 5.8% (95% CI 4.8 to 6.8). In the GEE model, myopic maculopathy was significantly associated with old age (per year; OR: 1.16; 95% CI 1.13 to 1.19; p<0.001) and myopic SE (per -1 D; OR: 1.48; 95% CI 1.40 to 1.56; p<0.001). No ethnic differences were detected between Han (98, 5.7%) and Uygur population (40, 3.1%) in terms of the prevalence of myopic maculopathy (OR=0.89; 95% CI 0.53 to 1.48; p=0.64). Neither urbanisation (p=0.38) nor the level of education (p=0.92) was associated with myopic maculopathy., Conclusions: A high age-adjusted prevalence of myopic maculopathy was observed in Han and Uygur populations in Xinjiang, China. Old age and high degree of myopic refraction were independent risk factors for myopic maculopathy. Few studies have investigated the prevalence of myopia in Northwest China. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of myopia and high myopia in adults aged 40-80 years in the Han and Yugur populations living in Gansu Province, Northwest China. A total of 3,845 participants were included. The overall age- and sex-adjusted prevalence of myopia (spherical equivalent (SE) < -0.5 D), high myopia (SE < -6.0 D) and hyperopia (SE > + 0.5 D) were 16.4%, 0.7% and 26.2% in Yugur participants, respectively, and 34.3%, 5.0% and 19.2% in Han participants, respectively. The prevalence of myopia and high myopia in Han participants was significantly higher than that in Yugur participants (both P < 0.001). Yugur population, birth in rural areas, smoking history and outdoor work were found to be negatively associated with myopia. Higher education level and a family history of myopia were found to be positively associated with myopia in the study population. High myopia was negatively associated with Yugur population, aging, birth in rural areas and was positively associated with a family history of myopia. This study provided valuable information regarding the environmental risk factors of myopia and revealed an ethnic disparity in the prevalence of myopia in Gansu Province, Northwest China.

Aims: To investigate the prevalence, ethnic differences and associated risk factors for pterygium in Han and Manchu populations aged 40-79 years in Hebei province, China., Design: Cross-sectional study, as a part of the China National Health Survey., Setting: Hebei province, China., Participants: A multistage cluster sampling method with urbanisation level-based stratification was used to select participants for this study. A total of 4591 individuals over 40 years were recruited for this study. Inclusive criteria: (1) residents who had been living in Hebei for more than 1 year; (2) Han individuals with both parents being Han, or Manchu individuals with both parents being Manchu; (3) underwent ophthalmic examinations and (4) information in the questionnaire was complete., Main Outcome Measures: Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between pterygium prevalence and factors of interest., Results: A total of 3790 individuals (2351 Hans and 1439 Manchus) met the study criteria, of which 248 were diagnosed with pterygium (6.5%). There was no significant difference between the prevalence rates in Hans (6.2%) and Manchus (7.2%) (p=0.232). Multivariate analysis revealed that the risk factors for grade 2 or higher pterygium were increasing age (p<0.001) and rural residence (OR 1.83; 95% CI 1.11 to 3.02; p=0.018), while the protective factors include gender (female) (OR 0.58; 95% CI 0.37 to 0.88; p=0.011), cigarette smoking (OR 0.53; 95% CI 0.34 to 0.83; p=0.005) and myopia (OR 0.50; 95% CI 0.33 to 0.77; p=0.002). Premature menopause (OR 2.66; 95% CI 1.05 to 6.72; p=0.038) increased the risk of grade 2 or higher pterygium in females, while higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (OR 1.94; 95% CI 1.08 to 3.47; p=0.027) was a risk factor of grade 2 or higher pterygium in males., Conclusion: The overall prevalence of pterygium in Han and Manchu population in Hebei, China was approximately 6.1%. There were no differences in the prevalence of pterygium between Hans and Manchus, and the race was not a risk factor. Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in critically ill neonates, and peritoneal dialysis (PD) can be a lifesaving option. In China, however, much of the equipment for PD in neonates is not available. We describe results with a novel system for PD, which has been developed locally to improve access to therapy and care for critically ill neonates requiring PD in China., Methods: The system comprises a 14-gauge single-lumen central venous catheter serving as a PD catheter, inserted by Seldinger technique, with an adapted twin bag PD system. Ten neonates with AKI were treated using the novel PD system., Results: The 10 patients ranged in age from 1 day to 22 days, with bodyweights between 700 g and 3,300 g. Average time to renal function recovery was between 14 and 96 hours. Complications related to the novel PD system included leak ( n = 1), catheter displacement ( n = 1), and catheter obstruction ( n = 1). There were no complications related to insertion, no cases of peritonitis or exit-site infection, and no subsequent hernias. A comparison of costs indicated that the novel PD system is less expensive than conventional systems involving open insertion of Tenckhoff catheters., Conclusions: Peritoneal dialysis using the novel PD system is simple, safe, and effective for suitable neonates with AKI in China., (Copyright © 2018 International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis.)

Hypertension is highly prevalent in low-income population. This study aims to investigate ethnic disparities in hypertension and identify modifiable factors related to its occurrence and control in developing regions in South China. Blood pressure was measured in the Bouyei and Han populations during a community-based health survey in Guizhou, 2012. A multistage stratified sampling method was adopted to recruit Bouyei and Han aged from 20 to 80 years. Taking mixed effects into consideration, multilevel logistic models with random intercept were used for data analysis. The prevalence rates of hypertension were 35.3% for the Bouyei and 33.7% for the Han. Among the hypertensive participants, 30.1% of the Bouyei and 40.2% of the Han were aware of their hypertensive conditions, 19.7% of the Bouyei and 31.1% of the Han were receiving treatment, and only 3.6% of the Bouyei and 9.9% of the Han had their blood pressure under control. Age-sex standardized rates of awareness, treatment, and control were consistently lower in the Bouyei than the Han. Such ethnic disparities were more evident in the elderly population. Avoidance of excessive alcohol consumption and better education were favorable lifestyle for reduction in risk of hypertension. Moderate physical activity improved control of hypertension in Bouyei patients under treatment. Conclusively, hypertension awareness, treatment, and control were substantially lower in Bouyei than Han, particularly in the elderly population. Such ethnic disparities indicate that elderly Bouyei population should be targeted for tailored interventions in the future.

Objective: To understand the fast plasma glucose (FPG) level and the epidemiologic characteristics of diabetes in ethnic Han residents of Guizhou province., Methods: The survey was conducted among the ethnic Han residents aged 20-80 years, who were selected through multi stage cluster sampling in Guizhou. Basic laboratory test, physical examination were performed for each subject., Results: A total of 2 967 subjects were surveyed. The average FPG level was 5.21 mmol/L for urban residents and 5.03 mmol/L for rural residents, (P<0.001) and the average FPG level was higher in males than in females (5.23 mmol/L vs. 5.09 mmol/L, P=0.003). The FPG level increased with age (P<0.001). In urban residents, the standardized prevalence of diabetes was 6.01% (crude prevalence: 7.45%), higher in males than in females (P<0.001) and increased with age. In rural residents, the standardized prevalence of diabetes was 3.47% (crude prevalence: 3.77%) and increased with age, but there was no sex specific difference in diabetes prevalence. The awareness rate of self diabetes status was 56.59%, the treatment rate was 84.47% and the plasma glucose control rate was 41.38%. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that risk factors for diabetes included being male, older than 40 years, family history of diabetes, frequent physical exercise, hypertension, high triglycerid level., Conclusion: The prevalence of diabetes was high in ethnic Han residents in Guizhou, the differences in diabetes prevalence between urban area and rural area was statistical significant. More than half of the patients' FPG level had not been under control after treatment. The awareness rate of self diabetes status, the treatment rate and the control rate of diabetes should be improved.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of general and abdominal obesity and associated factors in Bouyei and Han peoples., Design: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Guizhou province, southwest China in 2012, with multi-stage sampling to enroll 4551 participants aged 20 to 80 years. General and abdominal obesity were defined by World Health Organization (WHO) for Chinese. A design-based analysis was performed to evaluate prevalence of obesity and its related factors., Results: Bouyei people had a significantly lower prevalence of general obesity (4.8% vs. 10.9%, p < 0.05) and abdominal obesity (13.6% vs. 26.8%, p < 0.05) than that in Han people. Prevalence of obesity increased with age until middle-age period and declined thereafter. Men aged 40-49 years group and women aged 50-59 years group have the highest prevalence of general obesity. Prevalence of abdominal obesity was higher than that of general obesity. Middle-age, Higher income, Han people were significantly associated with an increased risk of General/abdominal obesity., Conclusions: Bouyei people had a lower prevalence of general and abdominal obesity than the Han people. Etiological studies should be conducted to determine underlying genetic factors and dietary factors.

Purpose: To understand the prevalence and associated risk factors of pterygium in Han and Uygur population in Xinjiang, China and to assess the racial differences., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two rural and three urban regions of Xinjiang. A multistage and stratified sampling method was used to select representative samples. Risk factors associated with pterygium were screened in logistic regression models., Results: Among 4617 participants aged 30 years and older, 2452 were Han and 2165 were Uygur Nationality adults. The overall prevalence of pterygium was 11.95% (n = 546), with 4.27% (n = 197) were bilateral and 7.56% (n = 349) were unilateral. Multivariate analysis indicated that race, age, and rural residence were significantly associated with any pterygium (P < 0.001 for all). The prevalence of pterygium (P < 0.01) in Han subjects was higher than that of Uygur subjects. Both age and rural residence were associated with any pterygium in Han and Uygur. Low education level had significant positive association with pterygium in Han population (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Pterygium affects approximately one-ninth of Han and Uygur population. Compared with Uygur, Han ethnicity is a significant risk factor of pterygium. Our results indicated a higher prevalence of pterygium in rural areas of Xinjiang, China compared with urban cities. Age increase was also associated with presence of pterygium. Objective: To study the distribution of mutations of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) gene and its relationship with hyperbilirubinemia among neonates with hyperbilirubinemia of Guangxi Heiyi Zhuang nationality., Methods: Total genomic DNA was extracted from the blood of 100 neonates with hyperbilirubinemia (case group) and 100 neonates without hyperbilirubinemia (control group), all of whom were selected from Guangxi Heiyi Zhuang population. TATA box and all exons of UGT1A1 gene were amplified by PCR and directly sequenced., Results: (TA)7 insertion mutation in TATA box, G71R missense mutation in exon 1, and 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs199539868, rs114982090, rs1042640 and rs8330) in exon 5 were observed. The allele frequency of G71R mutation in the case group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.01). There were no significant differences in the genotype distribution and allele frequency of TATA box mutation and SNPs (rs1042640 and rs8330) between the two groups (P>0.05). The logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of UGT1A1 TATA box mutation, G71R mutation, and SNPs (rs1042640 and rs8330) associated with the development of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia were 0.846 (0.440, 1.629), 3.932 (1.745, 8.858), 0.899 (0.364, 2.222), respectively., Conclusions: (TA)7 insertion mutation and G71R missense mutation of UGT1A1 gene are common mutation types in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia of Guangxi Heiyi Zhuang nationality. Four SNPs (rs199539868, rs114982090, rs1042640, and rs8330) was first reported in China. UGT1A1 G71R missense mutation is a risk factor for hyperbilirubinemia in neonates of Guangxi Heiyi Zhuang nationality.

Integrated field data, microstructural and three-dimensional strain analyses are used to document coaxial N-S shortening and southward increase in deformation intensity and metamorphism at the Jiaochang structure. Two episodes of deformation (D1,D2) with localized post-D2 deformation have been identified in the area. The first deformation (D1) episode is defined by a main axial-plane of parallel folds observable on a micro- to kilometer-scale, while the second episode of deformation (D2) is defined by micro-scale metamorphic folds, associated with E-W oriented stretching lineation. These processes are the result of Indosinian tectonism (Late Triassic to Early Jurassic) characterized by nearly coaxial N-S compression and deformation. This is indicated by E-W trending, sub-parallel to parallel foliation (S1, e.g. axial-plane of folds, and S2, i.e. axial-plane of metamorphic folds, crenulation cleavage) and lineation (L1, e.g. axis of folds, and L2, i.e. stretching lineation, axis of metamorphic folds and B-axis of echelon lens). Most of the porphyroblasts and minerals (e.g. pyrite, biotite) show two growth phases with localized growth in the third phase (muscovite). The progressive D1-D2 structure is widespread in the south of the Jiaochang area, but only D1 structure crops out at the north. The strain intensity (γ), compression ratios (c%) and octahedral strain intensity (εs) are similar across the Jiaochang structure (i.e., γ ≈ 1.8, c ≈ 27%, εs = 0.9), showing a broad range of Flinn values (K = 0.77 to 7.57). The long-axis orientations are roughly symmetric between two limbs of the structure. Therefore, we suggest that the architecture of the Jiaochang structure has been controlled by coaxial N-S shortening and deformation (D1-D2) during the Indosinian tectonic epoch, with insignificant post-D2 deformation.

Objective: To perform molecular diagnosis for a Chinese pedigree with osteogenesis imperfecta type I., Methods: Thirty pairs of primers were designed to amplify all the 52 exons, exon boundaries and promoter region of the COL1A1 gene from genomic DNA of peripheral blood cells of the family members. The PCR products were purified and directly sequenced. To check the mutation in normal controls, the genomic DNA from peripheral blood cells of the index patient, his mother and 60 normal controls were analyzed by amplification refractory mutation system., Results: A missense mutation of GAT>CAT was identified at codon 1441 of the COL1A1 gene from the family, which resulted in the replacement of aspartic acid by histidine (D1441H). This mutation was not found in a group of 60 normal controls., Conclusion: The method for molecular diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta was established and a novel COL1A1 gene mutation, D1441H, was identified in the Chinese pedigree with osteogenesis imperfecta type I.

No single hypothesis or theory has been widely accepted for explaining the functional mechanism of global alpine/arctic treeline formation. The present study tested whether the alpine treeline is determined by (1) the needle nitrogen content associated with photosynthesis (carbon gain); (2) a sufficient source-sink ratio of carbon; or (3) a sufficient C-N ratio. Nitrogen does not limit the growth and development of trees studied at the Himalayan treelines. Levels of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in trees were species-specific and site-dependent; therefore, the treeline cases studied did not show consistent evidence of source/carbon limitation or sink/growth limitation in treeline trees. However, results of the combined three treelines showed that the treeline trees may suffer from a winter carbon shortage. The source capacity and the sink capacity of a tree influence its tissue NSC concentrations and the carbon balance; therefore, we suggest that the persistence and development of treeline trees in a harsh alpine environment may require a minimum level of the total NSC concentration, a sufficiently high sugar:starch ratio, and a balanced carbon source-sink relationship.
