There are about 10 million people with epilepsy (PWE) in China. In addition to therapies approved by the National Medical Products Administration, the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is prevalent in Chines PWE. These CAM therapies mainly comprise traditional Chinese medicine herbs (TCMHs), acupuncture, and music. A retrospective literature search was performed to summarize the updates of CAM in China in the past ten years, and sixty‐two papers were finally included. In this following review, we listed the animal and clinical studies to summarize the antiepileptic mechanisms and clinical efficacy of CAM in Chines PWE. The main mechanisms of TCMHs and acupuncture included regulation of neurotransmitters and receptors, voltage‐gated ion channels modulation, expression of apoptosis‐related genes, antioxidant response, and anti‐inflammation. Although there were enormous clinical studies on them, the current available clinical trials were small, short‐term, heterogeneous, and had a high risk of bias. With regard to music, a few studies conducted by Chinese scholars suggested that it was beneficial for PWE as an add‐on therapy, which was consistent with the results of foreign studies. Jian-pi-bu-xue-formula (JPBXF), a TCM formula composed of twelve Chinese medicinal herbs, has been used in clinic to ease patients' state of weakness and fatigue especially after receiving anti-tumor chemotherapy in China. The lack of the phytochemical characterization, detail therapeutic evaluation and mechanism of JPBXF remains the main limitation for its spreading. In this study, we systematically evaluated the effectiveness and underline mechanism of JPBXF on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced myelosuppression and identified the main constituents of JPBXF aqueous extract. JPBXF treatments reversed CTX-induced myelosuppression through increasing the number of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and expression of C-kit in bone marrow cells. Simultaneously, JPBXF treatments alleviated CTX-induced blood cells reduction by increasing numbers of RBCs and WBCs and levels of GM-CSF, TPO and EPO in plasma. JPBXF treatments reduced CTX-induced immunosuppression by increasing expressions of CD3, CD4, and CD8a in PBMCs, and recovering structure damages of thymus and spleen. Moreover, JPBXF notably increased the expression of NRF2 compared with CTX group, and subsequently up-regulated HO1 and NQO1 both in mRNA and protein levels. In addition, eighteen compounds were recognized from JPBXF aqueous extract and the potential targets of the identified compounds were predicted. Overall, JPBXF can greatly reverse CTX-induced myelosuppression in C57BL/6 mice, especially in improving the blood and immune function through activating NRF2/HO1/NQO1 signaling pathway, which provides a reliable reference for JPBXF application in clinical. By recognizing eighteen compounds in JPBXF aqueous extract and predicting the underline mechanisms of the identified compounds, our study would provide theoretical guidance for further research of JPBXF. Background: Biqi capsule is a traditional Chinese medicine widely used as a complementary and alternative treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The objective is to understand the efficacy, safety and mechanism of Biqi combined with methotrexate (MTX) in RA. Methods: We present a randomized, controlled pilot trial on Biqi combined with MTX against patients with active RA. Seventy patients were randomized 1:1 to receive Biqi + MTX or Leflunomide (LEF) + MTX for 24 weeks, and were assessed at baseline, 4, 12 and 24 weeks. Serum and urine samples were collected for metabolomics. Results: Overall, 81.2% patients in Biqi group achieved ACR20 at 24 weeks. No statistically significant differences were observed in primary or secondary outcomes between the two groups. A better safety profile was observed for Biqi with significantly fewer adverse effects reported (11.4%) compared to LEF group (40%, P < 0.05). Comparison between treatment responders and non-responders indicated a unique urine metabolic profile of enriched fatty acids and decreased acylcarnitines associated with Biqi responders, indicating a restored energy homeostasis in response to Biqi. The gene targets of these metabolites were significantly enriched in interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 pathways, implying that Biqi could ameliorate Th2-derived inflammatory response. Multivariate network analysis indicated that patient morning stiffness and SJC were key factors associated with metabolomics in Biqi-treated patients, whereas CRP was the main factor in LEF group. Therefore, Biqi and LEF likely work by influencing different patient clinical parameters. Conclusions: Our study suggests that Biqi capsule can be a promising alternative option in combination with MTX for RA treatment, and demonstrates the capability of using metabolomics to interrogate mechanism of action for traditional Chinese medicine. Objective: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of traditional Chinese exercise therapy in alleviating pain, improving sleep quality, and reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression among fibromyalgia patients., Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search across various databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge, VIP database, and Wanfang, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the impact of Traditional Chinese Exercise (TCE) interventions on fibromyalgia. Two independent authors extracted data from the selected studies based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Meta-analyses were performed using RevMan 5.3., Results: The analysis encompassed 15 RCTs, comprising 936 participants. The meta-analysis revealed that TCE significantly surpassed the control group in reducing pain scores for fibromyalgia patients, as evidenced by improvements in FIQ [MD = -3.30, 95% CI (- 5.37, - 0.69), z = 2.53, p = 0.01] and VAS [MD = -1.87, 95% CI (- 2.12, - 1.61), z = 6.98, p < 0.00001]. Additionally, TCE demonstrated notable enhancements in sleep quality (PSQI) [MD = -2.23, 95% CI (- 2.86, - 1.61), z = 6.98, p < 0.0001], as well as in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression [MD = - 0.59, 95% CI (- 0.80, - 0.39), z = 5.63, p < 0.0001]., Conclusion: Traditional Chinese Exercise (TCE) exhibits significant efficacy in ameliorating pain, enhancing sleep quality, and alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression in fibromyalgia patients., (© 2024. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths and has the third highest incidence in the world. Almost half of the patients with CRC have metastases at the time of diagnosis. However, the treatment for patients with metastatic CRC that progresses after approved conventional chemotherapy is still controversial. Chinese medicine (CM) has unique characteristics and advantages in treating metastatic CRC., Objective: To assess the effectiveness and safety of CM in patients with metastatic CRC after failure of conventional chemotherapy., Methods: The study is a multicenter prospective cohort study. A total of 384 patients with documented metastatic CRC after failure of conventional chemotherapy will be included from 9 hospitals among Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Guizhou, and assigned to three groups according to paitents' wishes: (1) integrated Chinese and Western medicine (ICM) group receiving CM herbal treatment combined with Western medicine (WM) anti-tumor therapy, (2) Chinese medicine (CM) group receiving only CM herbal treatment, and (3) WM group receiving only WM anti-tumor therapy. The primary endpoint is the overall survival (OS). Secondary endpoints include the progression free survival (PFS), quality of life (QOL) assessed by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal (FACT-C) questionnaire, tumor control, and CM symptom score., Discussion: This prospective study will assess the effectiveness and safety of CM in treating metastatic CRC after conventional chemotherapy failure. Patients in the ICM group will be compared with those in the WM group and CM group. If certified to be effective, national provision of CM treatment in metastatic CRC will probably be advised. Aim: To examine the literature on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) used in the treatment, prevention and supportive care in patients with COVID-19., Design: A narrative review was performed., Data Sources: A systematic and comprehensive search was conducted on both Chinese and English electronic databases: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane, PubMed, PsycINFO. Articles published from 1 December 2019 -1 April 2020 were included in this review., Review Methods: Studies reporting on the treatment and prevention of COVID-19 using TCM regardless of study designs were included. In addition, grey literatures, including media reports on Chinese government websites or official media websites and treatment guidelines were searched for TCM treatment and prevention on COVID-19., Results: Limited research has been published on the use of TCM for COVID-19. We qualitatively described and synthesized the published research and current clinical practice on the use of TCM for COVID-19, and focused on the following areas: TCM treatment used in SARS, MERS, H1N1; TCM treatment plan for COVID-19; TCM in Prevention and Treatment at Early Stage of COVID-19; TCM emotional therapy; and personalized TCM treatment plan., Conclusion: The combination of western medicine and TCM in treatment, and treatment based on the local condition, isolation, personal protective measures are of great significance for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Relevant laboratory research and clinical evaluation should be continued to collect scientific evidences on the efficacy of TCM., Impact: TCM has been used in the treatment and prevention of COVID-19 in China, and the clinical evidences indicated that TCM regulates immunity and exerts anti-viral effect simultaneously.
