Purpose: The effect of hearing aids (HAs) and educational counseling (EC) or their combination on tinnitus is ambiguous. This study aimed to investigate whether the combined use of HAs and EC is more effective than EC alone on tinnitus relief. Method: A total of 72 adults with chronic, bothersome tinnitus and coexisting sensorineural hearing loss completed at least 1-month and 3-month follow-up. After receiving EC and HA prescriptions, 21 participants selected to purchase HAs (i.e., the HA + EC group), whereas the remaining 51 refused to use HAs despite recommendations (i.e., the EC group). Tinnitus severity was measured by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire (TEQ), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for loudness. The primary outcome measure was THI, and tinnitus relief was defined as a 20-point or more reduction in THI. A generalized linear mixed model was used to confirm that the heterogeneity in baseline characteristics between groups did not interfere with the results. Results: The THI, TEQ, and VAS scores decreased significantly after treatments, and both groups yielded a similar trend of reduction. There were no significant differences in the incidence of tinnitus relief and time-to-event curves between the two groups. In addition, the length of follow-up did not affect treatment effectiveness. Conclusion: There was insufficient evidence to support the superiority of the combined use of HA and EC for tinnitus over EC with no device.

According to previous studies, few students who experienced psychiatric problems sought out professional help. Although counseling rooms are now frequently found in primary and secondary schools in China, there is still a need to find a solution to the issue of how to increase the utilization rate of counseling rooms. To better understand how the setting of the counseling room affects students' willingness to seek professional psychological help, this study looked at the components that influence that increase. In this study, 1173 primary school students were surveyed using visual warmth of counseling room picture materials, intimacy measurement questionnaires, and the embedded figures test to investigate the relationship between visual warmth of counseling room picture materials and students' willingness to seek psychological help, as well as the role of intimacy and cognitive style. The study found that the warmth of the school counseling room had a significant effect on students' willingness to seek professional psychological help and that students' feelings of closeness to the counseling room mediated this influence path. Also, cognitive style moderated the direct effect of the counseling room's visual warmth on willingness to seek help as well as the first half of the mediating effect of intimacy.

In allusion to psychological problems caused by interpersonal communication, counsel with the theory of humanism, cognitive therapy, and the methods related, to help the visitor exploit potentialities and positive resources contains in herself, rectify unreasonable believes at the same time, increase the confidence and courage to changes in interpersonal relationships, challenges, setbacks, construct a reasonable mode of interpersonal communication, promote the growth and perfect of the personality. Through 5 consultations, the target was basically achieved.

Objective: This study intends to explore the effect of parent-training program on the rehabilitation intervention in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Chinese-speaking areas of China by offering parent skill training and psychology counseling. Methods: From January 2018 to June 2019, a total of 80 children diagnosed with ASD from the Department of Children Healthcare of Wuxi Children's Hospital were randomly grouped into the parent training groups and control groups. Parents in the training group received 12 weeks of skill training, including 8 group and 2 individual training sessions, as well as psychology counseling. This enabled them to give their children >2 h of intervention training daily in a natural environment. Children in the control group were placed on a rehabilitation waiting list or received general community training. Before grouping and after the intervention, all children underwent neuropsychological evaluations with Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and Gesell Developmental Schedule (GDS). GDS covers five sectors, namely adaptive behavior, gross motor, fine motor, language, and personal-social behavior. Results: Statistically significant differences were not detected between the two groups in ABC, CARS, and GDS scoring at baseline evaluation. And significant differences were detected between the two groups in ABC, CARS, adaptive behavior, and personal-social behavior scoring at endpoint evaluation. Furthermore, the re-evaluation results of ABC scoring and CARS scoring of the children in the parent training group decreased significantly from the preliminary evaluation results when compared before and after the intervention. Moreover, the intragroup comparison of adaptive behavior scoring, language scoring, and personal-social behavior scoring of the experiment group increased significantly from the preliminary evaluation results, while the difference of the same of the children in the control group between re-evaluation and preliminary evaluation did not differ significantly. Conclusions: In China, the parent-training program enables parents to train ASD children in a natural environment, which would markedly improve behavioral problems, core symptoms, adaptability, language competence, and social development capability.

To maximize learners' performance promotion in flipped classroom, this research redesigns a flipped classroom with four integrated practices: speed response questions, teacher face-to-face counselling, independent practices and team projects. Using questionnaire (N = 66) and interview (N = 20) data, the model is tested in two undergraduate introductory computer science courses in China, where students are typically reticent to engage in active learning in class. Data from a bipolar scale revealed that the majority of students regarded the new model as more student-centred. Using a learning capability matrix, this research deeply explored the benefits by learning dimension. The interviews provided details on the students' positive attitudes to the model and one area of concern. This research may be helpful for the scholars who are redesigning their flipped classrooms or developing new in-class activities.

This study investigated help-seeking intentions and use of mental health services within a sample of 1128 Mainland Chinese college students (630 males and 498 females; mean age = 20.01 years, SD = 1.48). Results of structural equation modeling and logistic regression analysis suggested that social-cognitive variables had significant effects both on students' intentions to seek professional mental health care and their actual service use. To promote help-seeking, practitioners should consider marketing campaigns and psycho-education for students and communities, enhancing knowledge and acceptance of mental health problems and effective treatment options.

Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to determine the cigarette smoking rate and smoking cessation counseling frequency in a sample of Chinese nurses. Design/methodology/approach: At the time of data collection, the hospital had 260 nurses, 255 females and five males. The 200 nurses working on the two daytime shifts were given the questionnaires; none refused to participate, reaching a response rate of 100 percent. All the participants were females as the five male nurses were working in the operation rooms at the time of data collection, are were thus not accessible. Findings: Some key findings include: only two nurses, out of 200, identified themselves as current cigarette smokers; all provided anti-smoking counseling to patients, the majority of them did not think their efforts were successful; cigarette smoking is a problem in China: the nurses estimated that 80 percent of male and 10 percent of female patients were current smokers; in the opinions of the nurses, Chinese smokers used smoking as a stress reliever and a social lubricant; two methods may help smokers to quit or reduce smoking: using aids such as patches, acupuncture and nicotine gum, and counseling by health professionals; the nurses think that cigarette smoking is well accepted in the Chinese culture. Practical implications: Findings of this research suggest that the Chinese Ministry of Health should take measures to change the cultural norms and values regarding cigarette smoking including strict rules be imposed on not passing/sharing cigarettes in the workplace. Originality/value: In a collectivistic culture such as China where opinions of authorities are respected, the part of nurses, who represent health authority to their patients, in assisting patients to quit or reduce smoking cannot be overemphasized. This study adds to the scarce research on Chinese nurses' role in helping patients' smoking cessation efforts. (Contains 5 tables.)

Offender counseling has been booming in China with typical Chinese characteristics, one of the most prominent of which is the possession of dual identities by both parties during the counseling interaction. This article, based on conversation analysis, focuses on one case study and examines "what is actually going on" between the police counselor and inmate client in the context of the prison in order to explore: (1) what kinds of discursive strategies are employed by the police counselor to engage the inmate client in the counseling; (2) how the inmate client responds to delicate matters, formulaic questions, and advice delivered by the police counselor; and (3) how the police counselor and inmate client manage their speech during the counseling conversation despite the obvious power imbalance between them. According to proponents of self-determination theory, autonomous regulation is a universal psychological human need. Researchers have found autonomy (defined as acting in accordance with one's values) related to well-being across cultures. Encouraging client autonomy is therefore fundamental to the practice of humanistic counseling.

A study of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT) among rural migrants was conducted in Shanghai, China. An anonymous questionnaire was administered face-to-face. Among 2,690 participants, 78% reported having had lifetime sexual intercourse with 41.3% of singles reporting sexual intercourse, 9.2% having had multiple sex partners in the past year, only 19% of the participants always using condoms whereas 61.6% did not use in their sexual acts in the past month, 80% knew HIV infection was diagnosed through a blood test, 46.5% had heard of VCT ever before, but only 3.5% felt that they were likely to be HIV-infected now or in the future and only 62 (2.3%) had ever had HIV testing with 19 of them getting tested at a VCT site. Gender, working venue, multiple sex partnerships and knowledge of VCT were independently correlated with having had HIV testing. This study suggests that a much greater effort is needed to promote safer sex and to improve VCT knowledge and services among rural migrants particularly those who are engaging in risky behaviors.

Ancient Chinese philosophers were interested in ways to promote psychological development and they made significant contributions, particularly in the area of mental testing. In the twentieth century the Chinese focused on behavioral psychology, and the field suffered a great setback during Mao's Cultural Revolution. However, more recently, psychology has received governmental support, and psychologists in China today are rapidly developing the field of counseling psychology. This paper puts Chinese psychology in historical context and describes many current practices and needs regarding counseling psychology.

The Questionnaire about Interpersonal Difficulties for Adolescents (QIDA) is a self-report instrument designed to measure adolescents' perceived interpersonal anxiety levels in a wide range of relationships with people of different ages, genders, levels of authority, and levels of intimacy and in several contexts: family, school, friends, opposite sex peers, and situations in the streets, shops, and public buildings. The QIDA provides important information for adolescents, educational and clinical psychologists, and researchers. This instrument can be used as a screening measure to identify social situations and relationships that adolescents find troublesome so that important target areas for social skills training programs can be ascertained. Thus, the QIDA can be used as a counseling tool for adolescent advising and for interpersonal difficulties remediation or prevention programs in a variety of clinical, educational, and research settings, including schools, counseling and mental health centers, alcohol and other drug units for youth, correctional and social service agencies, and research centers. In this study, the factor structure of the QIDA was examined across gender and ethnicity in samples of Spanish and Chinese adolescents using multigroup confirmatory factor analyses. Partial invariance was observed across gender in the Spanish sample and across ethnic groups. Measurement invariance was found across gender in the Chinese sample. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to find out the anti-smoking counselling frequency and its correlates in a sample of Chinese physicians. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, 268 physicians in Baoding, a city near Beijing, filled out a questionnaire asking about their own smoking status, their anti-smoking behaviors as well as their opinions on how to reduce cigarette smoking in China. Findings: The paper finds that 54 percent of the male and 8.4 percent of the female physicians were current cigarette smokers. When asked whether they had counselled their patients about cigarette smoking in the past year, 43.7 percent answered "always"; 38.1 percent "often"; 13.1 percent "sometimes"; 2.6 percent "occasionally", and 2.6 percent said: "not much". However, only 9.0 percent said that they were "very successful". Physicians' anti-smoking counselling practices were highly correlated with their own smoking status; whether they perceived their past anti-smoking activities as successful; whether they thought that they should set examples by not smoking; whether they felt that they had the responsibility to help patients and whether they perceived themselves as influential in persuading patients to quit smoking. Practical implications: The paper shows that messages aimed at increasing Chinese physicians' anti-smoking counselling should appeal to their responsibility, exemplary role, and unique influence on patients' health-related behaviors. Originality/value: The paper adds to the few studies on Chinese physicians' cigarette smoking behavior and their anti-smoking activities. In a country where cigarette smoking is a way of life among males, and few people are aware of the health consequences of cigarette smoking, physicians' efforts can be a spearhead to a cessation campaign. Policing domestic violence (DV) poses significant challenges in China due to cultural, legal, and organizational complexities. Policing DV in China favors mediation over assertive interventions, complicating law enforcement's role. While previous research has focused on coercive interventions by Chinese police, there is limited information on non-coercive, supportive approaches. This study investigates the relationship between police officers' knowledge and training regarding the Anti-DV law and their willingness to provide supportive services to DV victims in China. It also considers various individual and organizational factors. The data used in this study are derived from the Policing DV in China project, with a sample of 1,353 respondents who had experience dealing with DV cases within the past 3 years. The study focuses on three dependent variables representing supportive approaches to DV cases: Referral, Counseling, and Protection orders. Independent variables include officers' knowledge of the Anti-DV law and agency training. Control variables include the use of body-worn cameras (BWC) and attitudes toward Violence Tolerance, Male Dominance, and Gender Equality. Additionally, demographic variables, working environment, length of service, and police rank are considered. The analytical approach involves a three-step strategy, incorporating descriptive, bivariate analyses, and regression analyses. The results are interpreted using odds ratios and average marginal effects, and statistical software such as SPSS by IBM and R by Open-Source Model is utilized for data analysis. Key findings indicate that more than half of the officers referred intimate partner violence survivors to shelters and assisted victims in filing protection orders. Counseling practices varied across provinces and between male and female officers. Agency training and the use of BWC were positively associated with non-coercive and supportive approaches, while knowledge of the DV Act, male dominance score, and gender equality score did not predict the use of such approaches. Demographic characteristics, including police rank, length of service, and province of employment, influenced the utilization of non-coercive and supportive approaches. This study examines the challenges faced by Chinese police officers when responding to DV cases and their willingness to provide supportive interventions. The study highlights the complexities surrounding the initiation of protection orders due to officers' legal knowledge and discretion. The study emphasizes the importance of police support in addressing DV in China and the role of agency training in promoting non-coercive responses. The purpose of the current study was to examine the serial mediating effects of rejection sensitivity and social withdrawal on parental psychological control and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help among senior high school students. In November 2022, 648 students completed a self-report questionnaire. The parental psychological control scale, senior high school students' rejection sensitivity scale, social withdrawal scale, and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help scale were used for measurement. Correlation analysis showed parental psychological control and rejection sensitivity were positively correlated with social withdrawal (r = 0.387, 0.466, 0.495, all p < 0.001). Parental psychological control and rejection sensitivity were significantly negatively correlated with social withdrawal and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r = −0.325, −0.324, −0.397, all p < 0.001). Mediating effect analysis indicated that parental psychological control had a significant direct effect on attitude toward seeking professional psychological help, and rejection sensitivity and social withdrawal had significant serial mediating effects among parental psychological control and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help in senior high school students. These aspects warrant attention as they play significant roles in influencing students' willingness to seek psychological assistance. Objective: Explore the feasibility of a mobile health(mHealth) and virtual reality (VR) based nutrition-exercise-psychology integrated rehabilitation model in Chinese cancer patients. Methods: We recruited cancer patients in the Oncology department of the Affiliated Changzhou No. 2 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from October 2022 to April 2023. The rehabilitation program was provided by a team of medical oncologists, dietitians, psychotherapists, and oncology specialist nurses. Participants received standard anti-cancer therapy and integrated intervention including hospitalized group-based exercise classes, at-home physical activity prescription, behavior change education, oral nutrition supplements, and psychological counseling. An effective intervention course includes two consecutive hospitalization and two periods of home-based rehabilitation (8 weeks). Access the feasibility as well as changes in aspects of physical, nutritional, and psychological status. Results: At the cutoff date of April 2023, the recruitment rate was 75% (123/165). 11.4%patients were lost to follow-up, and 3.25% withdrew halfway. Respectively, the completion rate of nutrition, exercise, and psychology were 85%,55%, and 63%. Nutrition interventions show the highest compliance. The parameters in nutrition, psychology, muscle mass, and quality of life after the rehabilitation showed significant improvements (P <.05). There was no significant statistical difference (P >.05) in handgrip strength and 6-minute walking speed. Conclusion: It is feasible to conduct mHealth and VR-based nutrition-exercise-psychology integrated rehabilitation model in Chinese cancer patients. This study examined the reciprocal association between counseling trainees' trait and state anxiety and their clients' symptom distress and the mediating effects of working alliance. Data set included 6,888 sessions conducted by 211 master's level beginning therapists with their 1,216 clients in China. Trainees completed a measure of trait anxiety at the beginning of practicum. Before each session, trainees completed the state anxiety measure and clients reported their symptom distress; and after every session, both the trainees and clients rated their perceived working alliance. Multilevel modeling showed that (a) Therapist trainees' level of trait anxiety did not predict overall client outcome in terms of symptom reduction. (b) At the session-to-session level, higher therapist state anxiety before one session significantly predicted higher client distress before the next session, and higher client distress before one session significantly predicted higher therapist state anxiety before the subsequent session. (c) Therapist and client perceptions of working alliance were both significant mediators of the reciprocal relationship between therapist state anxiety and client distress. Findings suggested that it was trainees' state anxiety, instead of trait anxiety, that reciprocally related to client symptom outcome at the session-to-session level. Implications for clinical training were discussed. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS A generally more anxious therapist trainee does not seem to have worse overall clinical effectiveness compared with a generally less anxious trainee. From session to session, trainees who experience less state anxiety tend to establish a stronger working alliance with their clients, which leads to more client symptom relief. Evidence suggests against selecting trainees based on their trait anxiety level; but it is recommended that supervisors help trainees manage their state anxiety before a session. Background: Self-regulation is crucial for nurses who engage in in-depth end-of-life conversations with advanced cancer patients, especially in cultural contexts featuring death taboos. An improved understanding of the self-regulation process of nurses can help them address negative emotions and promote self-growth more effectively. Therefore, this study aimed to explore nurses' self-regulation process after end-of-life conversations with advanced cancer patients. Methods: This study employed a descriptive, qualitative approach. Seventeen nurses from four hospitals and a hospice unit in mainland China were interviewed between September 2022 and June 2023. Data were collected through face-to-face semistructured interviews. A thematic analysis method was used to analyse the data following the guidance of regulatory focus theory. Results: Three main themes were developed: self-regulation antecedents include personality, experience, and support; promotion or prevention is a possible self-regulation process for nurses; both self-exhaustion and self-growth may be the outcomes of self-regulation, as did seven subthemes. Personality tendencies, life experience, and perceived support may affect nurses' self-regulation, thereby affecting their self-regulation outcomes. Conclusions: Nurses exhibit different self-regulatory tendencies and self-regulation outcomes. The provision of peer support and counselling support to nurses is highly important with regard to achieving good self-regulation outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Although there are many researchers reviewing the existing evidence related to traumatic brain injury from speech-language pathologists' perspectives, there have been no attempts to review the existing research evidence in Standard Chinese to the best of the authors' knowledge. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and synthesise the existing research evidence available in China for therapy related to individuals with traumatic brain injury within the speech-language pathologists' scope of practice. Methods: This scoping review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. The literature search was conducted using databases that included articles in the Standard Chinese language. In collaboration with three therapists working in China, the data was extracted and translated into English. Results: Eight research articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this review. Six studies were randomised control trials, and two studies were cohort studies. These eight studies focused on collaboration, counselling and treatment. All studies addressed cognition and two also addressed language. Conclusions: Evidence showed that treatment focusing on cognitive and language skills provided by speech-language pathologists can improve the lives of people with a traumatic brain injury living in China. More research is warranted to better understand traumatic brain injury and treatment efficacy in China. Implications for practice: Clinicians, especially those who work with individuals who affiliate themselves with the Chinese culture, can consider the current research evidence discussed in this article when working with clients with traumatic brain injury. Funeral services are related to the vital interests of human beings and are supposed to meet people's social, psychological and spiritual needs. More and more people from the funeral service industry have realized the importance of bringing helping professionals into the funeral service industry to fill in service gaps. Based on the Strategies and Skills Learning and Development system, a practice framework for funeral social work is proposed. The framework incorporates services in direct service, education and training, administrative management and research development. There are many debates regarding the risk factors of surgical site infection (SSI) following posterior cervical surgery in previous studies. And, till now there is no such a study to examine cervical laminoplasty surgery. From January 2011 through October 2021, a total of 405 patients who were treated with unilateral open‐door laminoplasty surgeries were enrolled in this study. We divided the patients into the SSI group and the non‐SSI group and compared their patient‐specific and procedure‐specific factors. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed to determine the risk factors. Of the 405 patients, 20 patients had SSI. The rate of SSI found to be 4.93%. There were significant differences between groups in the thicker subcutaneous fat thickness (FT) (p < 0.001), the higher ratio of subcutaneous FT to muscle thickness (MT) (p < 0.001), the higher preoperative Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) Scores (p < 0.003), the decreased preoperative serum albumin (p < 0.001), the more postoperative drainage (p < 0.05) and the longer time of draining (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis of these differences showed that the higher ratio of subcutaneous FT/MT, the higher preoperative JOA scores, the decreased preoperative serum albumin and the longer time of draining were significantly related to SSI (p < 0.05). The higher ratio of subcutaneous FT/MT, the higher preoperative JOA scores, the decreased preoperative serum albumin and the longer time of draining are identified as the independent risk factors of SSI in cervical laminoplasty. Background: In the pandemic era, stressful life events (StressLEv) aggravated the impact on mental health. However, youths exhibited different responses to StressLEv because of diverse coping strategies, social support, and emotional intelligence before and after the pandemic. Aims: To explore the changes in StressLEv and coping strategies before and after the coronavirus 2019 pandemic, as well as report the associations among mental health and related factors in a sample of Chinese youths experiencing the post-pandemic era. Method: A cross-sectional study using convenience sampling was conducted from July 1 to August 30, 2022, covering 3,038 youths aged 14 to 25 in China. Multiple logistic regression was conducted for crude odds ratios (ORs) and adjusted ORs. The relationships between lasso-selected variables was examined using structural equation modeling. Results: More StressLEv and limited coping strategies were reported after the pandemic. In the post-pandemic era, BSI-positive youths (youths diagnosed as considered case by Brief Symptom Inventory, BSI) reported more StressLEv (BSI-positive: mean = 75.47; BSI-negative: mean = 28.69), less social support (BSI-positive: mean = 31.81; BSI-negative: mean = 39.22), and lower emotional intelligence (BSI-positive: mean = 75.34; BSI-negative: mean = 89.42). The willingness to engage in mental health counseling (OR: no vs. yes: 1.89; uncertain vs. yes: 4.42), being punished (OR: 1.27), adaptation problems (OR: 1.06), task-oriented coping (OR: 0.95), social diversion coping (OR: 0.90), objective support (OR: 0.90), utilization of social support (OR: 0.81), and regulation of emotion in oneself (OR: 0.94) were associated with mental health. Structural equation modeling supported our theoretical framework. Conclusions: Pandemic-induced mental health problems should not be ignored. Despite increasing awareness of mental health problems among older adults, limited mental health services are available to meet their needs. The proposed study aimed to evaluate the need for mental health services among older adults in Shanghai, China, and identify gaps in the existing service system to inform policy making. Based on 80 face-to-face interviews amongst several groups of older adults and community officers, doctors and government stakeholders, the study found that (a) the mental health needs of older adults living with family members mainly present as needs for social interaction, sense of belonging, and self-realization; (b) special groups, such as older adults living alone, mainly desire support to address loneliness, older adults with physical disabilities desire social respect, and those with mental disabilities seek social acceptance; and (c) community cadres and other stakeholders have paid little attention to demands related to mental well-being among older people. It is necessary to deliver mental health education to community stakeholders and the public, popularize mental health knowledge, and publicize professional psychological counseling and treatment services. Meanwhile, policy makers should allocate resources to train professional mental health services personnel to meet these growing mental health needs and increase financial support for mental health services for older adults. This study aimed to explore occupational stress, perceived respect, and the need for psychological counselling among nurses in China. This was a nationwide cross-sectional study. Chinese nurses from 311 cities were randomly selected through a simple random sampling method. Occupational stress, perceived respect, and psychological counselling need were assessed using an online questionnaire validated by experts. The underlying associated factors were analysed using multiple logistic regression analyses. We collected and analysed 51,406 valid online questionnaires. Family factors and low income were the most commonly cited sources of occupational stress, and 91.9% and 80.0% of nurses, respectively, perceived that individuals in society and patients did not give adequate respect. Furthermore, 75.5% and 79.7%, respectively, believed they were not respected by clinical managers and doctors. As a result, 64.7% nurses believed they had a moderate or high need for psychological counselling. However, 80.7% indicated that receiving adequate respect could decrease the need for stress-related psychological counselling. Indeed, multiple logistic regression analyses showed that lower respect perceived by nurses was associated with higher need for psychological counselling, particularly regarding criticism that nurses perceived from nursing managers (a little: odds ratio [OR], 1.597; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.176–2.170; P = 0.003; moderately: OR, 1.433; 95% CI, 1.180–1.741; P < 0.001) and the difficulty of receiving respect from patients and their families (a little: OR, 1.389; 95% CI, 1.044–1.850; P = 0.024). The aims of this study were to investigate the overall, and subgroups of, developmental profiles of the three domains of counseling self-efficacy (CSE) among beginning therapist trainees in China. Further, the associations between the different CSE developmental profiles and the trainees' perceived supervisory working alliance (SWA) and their clients' reported symptom distress were also examined. Participants included 258 beginning therapist trainees in a master's level counseling training program in China, who completed measures of CSE in three waves throughout the practicum and rated SWA after every supervision session. Clients rated their symptom distress before and after treatment. Growth mixture analysis results indicated that overall, trainees showed the highest initial confidence in helping skills use, followed by in session management, and last in handling counseling challenges, and there were significant increases in all three aspects of self-efficacy. Second, four subgroups of developmental profiles emerged, including beginning moderate with no changes, beginning moderate with moderate increases, beginning low with marked increases, and beginning high with partial minor increase. Third, the beginning moderate with no changes subgroup showed lower ratings of SWA and the lowest average client symptom improvement. Recommendations for future research and implications for training are presented. Public Significance Statement: Findings in this study highlighted the importance for trainers and supervisors to maintain a positive supervisory relationship and support trainees in enhancing their counseling confidence. Further, special attention should be paid to a subgroup of trainees who do not show developmentally appropriate confidence increases throughout practicum, as they may be at risk of having suboptimal clinical performance in treating their clients. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major public health problem that has negative effects on mothers, infants, and society. This study was aimed at investigating the prevalence of PPD and elucidating the delivery factors implicated in PPD so as take more targeted measures for reducing the potential risk factors. A prospective cohort study was conducted. Following the criterion, 151 pregnant women were included in the study. The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and the general questionnaire were filled out 2–3 days after delivery. At weeks 2 and 6 postpartum, the EPDS was reassessed either online or via telephone. Also, electronic medical records based on relevant information during the delivery period were collected. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. A high rate of PPD (31.13%) was reported. Univariate correlation analysis showed statistically significant differences in the husband-wife relationship (χ2 = 18.497, p < 0.001), neonatal health (χ2 = 14.710, p < 0.001), and breast milk volume (χ2 = 5.712, p = 0.017) between PPD and normal control groups. Adjusting for other covariates, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that satisfactory conjugal relation could reduce the risk of PPD (OR, 0.053; p = 0.022); Neonatal health problems significantly increase the risk of PPD (OR, 6.497; p = 0.001); Adequate breast milk could alleviate the risk of PPD (OR, 0.351; P = 0.045). Data analysis suggests that marital discord and unhealthy new-born are independent risk factors; nevertheless, sufficient breast milk is a protective factor against PPD. Healthcare workers such as hospital and community doctors and social workers should pay attention to PPD. Furthermore, perinatal emotional support, health education, and EPDS assessment need to be incorporated into maternity care. Introduction: In recent years, a new form of health has emerged, namely philosophical health. This novel concept is part of the philosophical counseling movement and relies on the philosophical method called the SMILE‐PH interview, which draws heavily from continental philosophy, including phenomenology. Reflecting on the link between health and philosophy brings us to an ancient healthcare tradition that actively relies on philosophy: Chinese healthcare and its founding wuxing, or five phases ontology. Objective: The aim of this study is to interpret philosophical health from the standpoint of wuxing ontology. Methods: We used the multiple meanings of the five phases to interpret the six concepts of SMILE‐PH interview method. Then, we monitored how applying the SMILE‐PH involves a parent phase triggering for the counselee. Last, we focused our analysis on the triggered phase and conceptualized them into philosophical health. Results: The SMILE‐PH topics are located in a specific phase, namely the Metal phase (xin), which is described by the concepts of connection, existence, identity, meaning in one's life, and spirituality. The one‐phase structure of SMILE‐PH fosters the triggering of its parent phase: the predominant Metal phase character of the SMILE‐PH interview will promote the appearance of Earth phase answers. Conceptualizing the Earth phase into philosophical health adds the following aspects to the latter: emotional stability, the feeling of plenitude, and sharing without a transactional mindset. Conclusion: We obtained a clear perspective of the place of SMILE‐PH in wuxing ontology and added a new layer to philosophical health. The aims of this study are: (i) to examine the current practice of Chinese GPs in counseling patients regarding nutrition and physical activity; (ii) to understand the common barriers to such counseling by Chinese GPs; and (iii) to study the association between GPs' personal lifestyle choices and their practices in lifestyle counseling.Methods: A cross-sectional, self-reported online questionnaire was conducted among GPs in Hunan province, China. A total of 198 GPs completed the questionnaire.Results: The majority of GPs provide nutrition and physical activity counseling to less than 40% of their patients, spending less than three minutes per counseling session. The main reported barriers to counseling on nutrition and physical activity are inadequate time and a lack of knowledge or experience. GPs primarily acquire knowledge through medical books and journals, followed by science popularization. Furthermore, GPs who maintain healthier lifestyle habits, possess a better understanding of lifestyle guidelines, conduct longer office visits, and exhibit higher self-efficacy are more likely to provide counseling to patients.Conclusion: This study highlights the need for improvement in nutrition and physical activity counseling among Chinese GPs. GPs' personal nutrition and physical activity habits may measurably influence their counseling practice. We recommend that GPs themselves adopt healthier lifestyle habits to potentially improve their counseling practice. Introduction: Thalassemia is the most common monogenic disease in South and Southeast Asia. An accurate assessment of the relative frequency and composition of thalassemia mutations is important for the design of appropriate strategies to prevent the disease. In this study, we aimed to decode the molecular characterization of thalassemia mutations in Zhuhai region of southern China. Methods: A total of 8048 individuals who were potential thalassemia carriers were enrolled. Gap‐polymerase chain reaction (Gap‐PCR) and reverse dot‐blot (RDB) hybridization methods were employed to detect common deletional and non‐deletional thalassemia mutations. Multiplex ligation dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and Sanger sequencing were used to analyze and verify rare and complex mutations. Results: We diagnosed 3433 individuals as thalassemia carriers or patients. Of these, 2395 (69.76%) individuals with α‐thalassemia harbored 13 α‐globin gene mutations. The three most common α‐thalassemia mutations were ‐‐SEA (60.08%), ‐α3.7 (20.62%) and ‐α4.2 (9.25%). We diagnosed 903 (26.30%) individuals with β‐thalassemia and identified 20 β‐globin gene mutations, of which the three most frequent were CD41/42 (‐TCTT) (38.10%), IVS‐II‐654 (C>T) (23.69%) and TATAbox‐28 (A>G) (15.18%). In addition, we identified 15 rare thalassemia variants. We also summarized the association between the thalassemia genotype and hematological parameters, which demonstrated the broad phenotypic heterogeneity caused by globin gene mutations. Conclusion: This is the first survey of thalassemia molecular epidemiology and hematological phenotype in Zhuhai region. It uncovered a high prevalence and complex molecular spectrum of thalassemia. The need for mental health services has increased, and online psychological counselling, which provides psychological help with no risk of infection, has become more popular. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the COVID-19 on psychological counselling services and compare the general situation of publications on online psychological counselling before and during the pandemic. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of solution-focused group counseling (SFGC) to reduce depressive symptoms and improve cognitive functions among Chinese rural older adults. Method: In a cluster randomized controlled trial, 290 participants were randomly assigned to a 12-session SFGC intervention or a control group. the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale and Mini-Mental State Examination was adopted to measure depressive symptoms and cognitive functions, respectively, at pretest and posttest. Results: Repeated measure ANOVAs showed a significant group by time effect for both measures. Paired sample t-tests showed that depressive symptoms significantly decreased in the intervention group, but not in the control group. Cognitive functions did not change in the intervention group, but significantly declined in the control group. Conclusions: Our findings support the feasibility and effectiveness of a culturally adapted SFGC for reducing depressive symptoms and protecting cognitive functions among the disadvantaged older adults in a developing country. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a serious global health concern. The objective of this study is to dynamically investigate the changes of metabolic profiles and metabolites in Chinese male MetS subjects after an 18 months diet and exercise intervention. Fifty male MetS patients defined according to International Diabetes Federation 2005 guidelines were subjected to diet and exercise counseling for 18 months. Serum samples were taken at baseline, 12 months, and 18 months, respectively, for clinical evaluation and metabolomics analyses. Diet and exercise intervention for 18 months achieved significant improvements in the metabolic profiles of all participants. Nineteen subjects (38.0%) exhibited MetS remission at the end of the study. A total of 812 relative features were characterized and 61 were successfully identified. Furthermore, 17 differential metabolites were of significance at both time points (baseline-12 months, baseline-18 months) and presented nonlinear trends through time. Eight metabolites (47.1%) were predominantly converged to inflammation and oxidative stress. Pro-inflammatory biomarkers were remarkably decreased after 18 months of intervention, and prostaglandin E2, neuroprotectin D1, and taxiphyllin in combination were firstly found to demonstrate a fair discriminative power (area under curve = 0.911) to predict the improvement of MetS undergone diet and exercise intervention. The significant shift of metabolomic profiling after 18 months of lifestyle counseling provide a novel insight and reveal that earlier inflammation control may be of potential benefit in MetS management. This study developed a scale of perceived salient organizational career management practices based on a survey of 420 social workers from social work organizations in Guangdong province, China. A two-factor structure OCM scale was constructed using items reflecting the components of organizational career management (OCM) practices. The scale showed sufficient reliability and validity. The results demonstrated the necessity of designing promotion ladders, relevant training, career counseling and other OCM measures to assist social workers in their career progression. The perceived salient OCM scale helps social work managers to understand how social workers perceive OCMpractices in social work organizations. Social work managers can specifically target OCM practices to social workers, and a systemic career progression ladder will facilitate a proactive and flexible response to social workers' aspirations. Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a proven biomedical strategy to prevent HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). Despite oral PrEP is safe and effective in MSM, the use of PrEP has been discouraging, especially in high-risk MSM. And there are no relevant studies showing the use of PrEP in high-risk MSM. The purpose of this study was to get the rate of PrEP use and the factors influencing PrEP use among high-risk MSM. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through an electronic questionnaire on the "i guardian Platform", and "snowballing" method was used to recruit MSM in six cities in China, including Beijing, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Changsha, Jinan and Nanjing in China, from January to April 2021. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the factors associated with the use of PrEP among high-risk MSM who had heard about PrEP. Results: Among the 1865 high-risk MSM who had heard of PrEP, the rates of those who were willing to use PrEP, had knowledge awareness of PrEP, and had used PrEP were 96.7%, 24.7%, and 22.4%, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis of PrEP use in high-risk MSM showed that more PrEP was used by those who were 26 years or older (OR = 1.86, 95%CI 1.17 ~ 2.99), had master degree or above (OR = 2.37, 95% CI 1.21 ~ 4.72), had unstable work (OR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.16 ~ 2.96), had tested five or more HIV times in the past year (OR = 3.09, 95% CI 1.65 ~ 6.04), had consulted PrEP (OR = 22.05, 95% CI 14.87 ~ 33.91) and had PrEP knowledge awareness (OR = 1.90, 95% CI 1.41 ~ 2.55) (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The rate of PrEP use in high-risk MSM was relatively low. PrEP was used more by high-risk MSM with unstable jobs, higher education, frequent HIV testing, and PrEP counseling.
