A super-efficient SBM model was constructed using Chinese provincial panel data from 2011 to 2018 to explore the impact of digital finance on sustainable total factor eco-efficiency (STFEcE) and its mechanisms of action. The results show that digital finance can promote the improvement of STFEcE, and this promotion is heterogeneous. Western regions with more backward financial development, ecologically inefficient regions, and financially weakly regulated regions have more significant eco-efficiency improvements from digital financial services. Digital finance influences STFEcE by expanding the scale of green credit and enhancing the level of green and digital technology innovation. Therefore, the government should support the efficient integration of digital technology and financial services in macro policies, accelerate the infrastructure construction of digital finance, eliminate the digital divide, and create a favourable financial environment for improving STFEcE. Introduction: Population aging and internal migration have become the "norm" in China's population development. Influenced by both "mobility" and "old age," internal elderly migrants (IEMs) face the second-level digital divide problems primarily characterized by digital technology usage gap, which can lead to adverse health outcomes. Understanding the impact of the digital divide on the health of IEMs can provide effective solutions to meet the health needs of this particular group and facilitate their better integration into a digital society. Therefore, this study aims at exploring the impact of the digital divide on the health of IEMs, and identifying priorities and recommendations for improving IEMs' health by mitigating the adverse effects of the digital divide. Methods: In the 2017 China Migrant Dynamic Survey (CMDS), a cross‑sectional sample of 169,989 internal migrants in 32 provincial units across China was recruited by stratified probability proportionate to size sampling (PPS). We focus on IEMs and require interviewees to be 60 years and older. Therefore, we excluded samples younger than 60 years of age and retained only 6,478 valid samples. Subsequently, STATA 17.0 software was applied to analyze the data. Based on the research objective and Grossman's model of health demand, we empirically tested using ordered logit regression. Results: The digital divide does affect the health of IEMs in general and its negative effects tend to decrease significantly with age. In terms of groups, its impact showed noticeable group differences in residence arrangement, public health services and medical insurance coverage. Compared with IEMs who live alone or only live with their spouse, have not received public health service, and have not been covered by any medical insurance, the digital divide imposes a smaller adverse impact on the health of IEMs who live with at least one offspring, have received public health service, and have covered in at least one medical insurance. In terms of potential mechanisms, among the effects of digital divide on the health of IEMs, the mediating effect of urban integration is not significant, the social interaction has only a partial mediating effect, and the medical convenience has a significant mediating effect. Conclusion: Our findings confirm the existence of the third-level digital divide among IEMs concerning health, that is, the digital divide has adverse health outcomes for this group, and underscore the important implications of reducing the negative impact of the digital divide in improving the health status of IEMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Factor market distortion hinders economic growth, and digital economy may provide an impetus to help alleviate the misallocation. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2013 to 2021, this study applies a dynamic evaluation method to measure the comprehensive level of digital economy, and constructs a spatial econometric model to investigate its impacts on factor market distortion, as well as the differences before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical findings indicate that China's digital economy development shows a steady upward trend at the provincial level, has a spatial spillover effect on factor market distortion, and plays a dissipating role, which embodies the potential of digital economy in improving the optimal allocation of resources. At the same time, there is a phenomenon of unbalanced digital economy development in different areas, reflecting the "digital divide" problem. Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic, various mobility restrictions were launched, which promotes continuous penetration of the digital economy in various fields of the economy, and its effects on alleviating the factor market distortion are manifested. Intergenerational learning plays a crucial role in family businesses, facilitating knowledge transfer and business skills across generations. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of intergenerational learning research trends in the family business context from 2013 to 2023. The analysis utilized the VOSviewer application to map the research landscape and identify key themes. In the past 10 years, research on intergenerational learning in family businesses has been comparatively rare, with only 116 publications, or 10 per year on average. The highest number of citations occurred in 2013, 2015, and 2017, with China leading in Asian studies. Social sciences, medicine, and psychology were the prominent disciplines in this field. The analysis revealed clusters of key terms such as child, father, intergenerational, parent, research, digital divide, older adult, perspective, family, intergenerational transmission, language, role, and violence. The study also identified less-explored areas within intergenerational learning, including older adults, children, and the digital divide. Indonesia's focus on family education and cultural heritage transmission could advance research in this field. Overall, this study contributes to the comprehension of forging a legacy through intergenerational learning in the context of family businesses and establishes a foundation for future research directions. Purpose: This paper according to the logic of the "digital access divide--digital capability divide--digital outcome divide" aims to systematically discuss the impact of the digital divide on individual happiness in China, accounting for the variations that exist across different groups, as well as the corresponding mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents cross-sectional analyses of the relationship between the digital divide and individual happiness in China. The analyses are based on data from the Chinese General Social Survey 2017, which academic institutions run on the Chinese Mainland. This database contains information on respondents' Internet access, skills and consequences of use, which can measure the digital divide of Chinese individuals at three levels. Findings: First, individual happiness declined when they experienced the digital access divide in China. For the digital capability divide, the lower the usage skills, the more individual happiness declined. When analyzing the digital outcome divide, the greater the negative consequences, the more individual happiness declined. Second, the impacts of digital access, capability and outcome divide vary according to age, gender, education degrees, hukou, region and sub-dimensions. Third, the digital access and capability divide reduce individuals' happiness by lowering their self-rated social and economic status, whereas the digital outcome divide reduce individual happiness by lowering their fairness perception and social trust. Originality/value: The authors believe that this is the first study to examine the impact and its variations among different groups of the three-level digital divide on individual happiness, as well as its mechanisms. The relationship between information and communication technology (ICT) and environmental pollution is widely recognized and complex. To better understand the environmental impact of ICT, we divide it into two facets: the supply side and the usage side. This study investigates the impact of ICT usage and ICT supply on sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions using random effect and spatial Durbin model in China Yangtze River Delta from 2011 to 2019. The findings reveal an inverted U-shape relationship between ICT usage and SO2 emission, while the supply of ICT has a significant negative impact on SO2 emissions. Furthermore, the spillover effect of ICT usage shows insignificant outcomes, but the supply of ICT has a significant and negative impact on SO2 emissions. Collectively, these findings provide fresh insights and empirical evidence into the effects of ICT usage and ICT supply on SO2 emissions, bearing significant policy implications for promoting ICT to attain sustainable development goals. The Expert-based Collective Advising Mechanism (ECAM) was embedded in the open online tutoring project to provide free tutoring for rural students and to help them improve their academic performance, and thus, to solve education inequity. Taking urban and rural students in Tongzhou District of Beijing as the objects, this study gathered data on the tutoring frequency, the durations students received tutoring, the number of teachers who tutored the same student, and the students' academic performance. The tutoring behavior and academic performance of rural and urban students were compared. The results showed that the ECAM could improve students' academic performance. Rural and urban students who received tutoring got the same degree of performance appreciation. Finally, gender, school type, and tutoring duration predicted academic performance positively. The digital economy (DE) is emerging as a crucial driver of economic growth and an effective tool for alleviating resource and environmental pressures, thereby evolving into a significant force in facilitating green transformation. This study elaborates on the theoretical mechanism of the impact of DE on green total factor productivity (GTFP), and conducts multidimensional empirical tests using panel data from 284 cities in China. The main findings are as follows: (1) DE exerts significant positive direct, indirect, and spatial spillover effects on GTFP, signifying its growing role as a robust driver of GTFP. Notably, technological innovation emerges as a key mediator of DE’s impact on GTFP. (2) The impact of DE on GTFP exhibits a distinct pattern: initially pronounced, gradually diminishing, and then rebounding as DE progresses. (3) DE tends to exacerbate, rather than alleviate, the development divide and resource curse, especially in underdeveloped and resource-rich cities where its benefits are constrained. (4) Government behavior is pivotal in influencing DE’s impact on GTFP. Supportive policies and strict environmental regulations are critical in harnessing DE’s positive contributions to GTFP. This study examined the association between Internet use and loneliness among Chinese older adults (aged 60+) over a two-year period using nationally representative survey data from China. Using data from the 2016 and 2018 waves of the China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey (N = 8,059), we estimated difference-in-differences regression models to assess the association between Internet use and levels of loneliness over time. Compared to Internet non-users, Chinese older adults who were new Internet users, as well as those who were continuous Internet users, reported lower levels of loneliness over time (B = −0.21, p < 0.001 and B = −0.16, p < 0.001, respectively). Conversely, those Chinese older adults who used the Internet in wave 1 but then disengaged from using the Internet in wave 2 demonstrated an upward trend in loneliness over time, similar to Internet non-users (the estimate of difference-in-differences was non-significant for the comparison between disengaged-users and non-users: B = −0.03, p = 0.42). This study provided new evidence to support the potential benefits of Internet use for reducing the risk of loneliness among Chinese older adults. Digital transformation has emerged as a significant area of interest for scholars in global political science and public administration. The advancement of digital technologies is driving a comprehensive transformation across the economy, society, and governance, thereby profoundly affecting the state governance of China. The introduction of new technologies has altered traditional power dynamics, leading to centralization and empowerment—the power redistribution issue of the digital era, which is a fundamental concern in China's state governance. The effects of technological power, including empowerment and disempowerment of various entities, give rise to or reinforce four secondary issues: the problem of data silos and collaborative governance in internal government operations, the challenges related to technological deficits and platform regulation in market regulation, the issues of the digital divide and social justice in social governance, and concerns about privacy, transparency, and rights asymmetry. This paper integrates specific cases from China's digital transformation and digital government initiatives to examine these cuttingedge issues and to analyze the impact of digital government reforms implemented by local Chinese governments on traditional government theories. The digital transformation of education should be continuously promoted to guarantee its sustainable development. Extensive research has been conducted in this field but has not comprehensively addressed Chinese education digitalization. To fill this research gap, discover the gaps between Chinese and international research on the digitization of education and provide well-founded, innovative ideas for future research, we perform a bibliometric analysis of knowledge mapping in Chinese education digitalization. WOS and CNKI databases were used to gather literature on Chinese education digitalization research from 2012 to 2022. CiteSpace was used to draw a knowledge map of Chinese education digitalization research through co-occurrence analysis of core authors, issuing institutions and regions and cluster analysis and burst terms analysis of keywords, combined with intensive manual studying of the literature. The results show the research status and hot spots of Chinese education digitalization research are divided into four dimensions: studies of lifelong education research in digital open universities and the online teaching transformation in higher education; studies of digital educational publications, the development and application of digital learning resources in vocational colleges and universities, and the equity of basic education resources in the digital context; studies on artificial intelligence technology empowering the digital transformation of education in China; and studies of digital integration of production and teaching in rural revitalization and improvement of digital literacy of university students and faculty. Future digital education research trends in China are likely to focus on the normalization of online education; the development of online education resources in the context of new infrastructure; "new technology plus education"; the impact of digital games on education; a more diversified digital divide in education; and digital rights, digital ethics, digital maturity and the Global Digital Education Development Index. This paper attempts to explore the decoupling relationship and its drivers between industrial economic increase and energy-related CO2 emissions (ICE). Firstly, the decoupling relationship was evaluated by Tapio index. Then, based on the DEA meta-frontier theory framework which taking into account the regional and industrial heterogeneity and index decomposition method, the driving factors of decoupling process were explored mainly from the view of technology and efficiency. The results show that during 2000e2019, weak decoupling was the primary state. Investment scale expansion was the largest reason hindering decoupling process of industrial increase from ICE. Both energy saving and production technology achieved significant progress, which facilitated the decoupling process. Simultaneously, the energy technology gap and production technology gap among regions have been narrowed, and played a role in promoting decoupling process. On the contrary, both scale economy efficiency and pure technical efficiency have inhibiting effects on decoupling process. The former indicates that the scale economy of China's industry was not conducive to improve energy efficiency and production efficiency, while the latter indicates that resource misallocation problem may exist in both energy market and product market. Bridging the "digital divide" to benefit from the "digital dividend" reflects the inclusive development of the digital economy, which affects the sustainable development of the overall economy and society. Based on the different spatial perspectives of certain regions, city clusters, and cities, this study presents the "digital divide" and "digital dividend" for the development of China's digital economy. A combined entropy method was used to measure the development of the digital economy in cities of China from 2011 to 2019. The Dagum Gini coefficient and its decomposition were used to explore the spatial differences of the digital economy and their sources, while the coefficient of variation and the spatial panel model were used to examine the convergence of the digital economy. Our findings suggest that the development level of the digital economy in Chinese cities has continuously improved. Second, the spatial differences of the digital economy in the four regions and nine city clusters of China that were investigated are decreasing, indicating that the "digital divide" is narrowing and presenting a significant "digital dividend." The total differences were mainly owing to those between the regions (among the city clusters). Third, the development of the digital economy in the four regions and nine city clusters demonstrated characteristics of σ, β, and club convergences. Finally, the evolution path of the spatial differentiation of the digital economy in cities of China is presented, and the "digital dividend" also demonstrates different stage characteristics. This study analyzed the spatial differences in the digital economy of cities in China and clarified the convergence and influence mechanisms of its development at different spatial scales. The findings provide a basis for the evolution of spatial and temporal patterns of the digital economy of cities in China and presents policy implications for promoting the regionally coordinated and sustainable development of the digital economy. Suggestions from the national and regional levels are more necessary to further narrow the "digital divide," create a "digital dividend," and digital drives sustainable economic development. Previous studies on the carbon emission efficiency (CEE) in the power industry have neglected concerns related to regional heterogeneity and the integer character of certain indicators. In response to these issues, this study proposes a meta-frontier DEA model that integrates integer constraints for evaluating the CEE of China's provincial power industry from 2011 to 2021. This study also proposes to apply the Theil, technology gap ratio, and inefficiency decomposition indexes to analyze regional disparities, technological gaps, and strategies for enhancing CEE within China's provincial power industry. The research findings highlight several key points. First, China's power industry exhibits inefficiencies in CEE. The central region mainly contributes to the overall CEE decline, and approximately 70% of provinces demonstrate an average CEE below 0.70. Second, the technological level of the western region is leading, while that of the central region is the worst. Specifically, Ningxia, Hainan, and Jiangsu have the most advanced production technology levels. Third, substantial disparities in CEE within China's power industry primarily stem from regional imbalances in development. Fourth, technical inefficiency contributed 68.24% of the CEE in the central region, and management inefficiency contributed 96.91% and 65.42% in the western and eastern regions, respectively. This article offers a critical analysis of China's health code system, a data-powered pandemic control and contact tracing system that supposedly subjects all individuals in the country to its panopticon control, a surveillance system that monitors and categorises the Chinese population into the healthy (green), the dubious (yellow), and the unhealthy (red). The article highlights the pretence of surveillance as care and the digital divide that normalises discrimination against the elderly and other digitally left-behind population. It also illustrates how, from policy making and technological design to user engagement, the health code system is implemented, optimised, and used in everyday life to meet the needs of the vulnerable population. The health code is better taken as a medium of adaptable and communicative process that can reset the relation between the system and the lifeworld. In China, struggling to balance environmental protection and economic growth is fundamental for the transformation of economic growth model in future. This research uses the dynamic DEA model and incorporates it into non-radial DDF. Then, the research estimates the provincial environmental performance in China during the observation period. Taking into account technological heterogeneity, in this study, the evaluated provinces are divided into two groups (temperate region and tropical and subtropical regions). The empirical findings reveal the following. (1) Most of the provinces have considerable room for enhancement in environmental performance. (2) The environmental performance of provinces in temperate regions is obviously worse than that of those in the tropical and subtropical regions. (3) Provinces in temperate region should improve environmental efficiency by reducing both their technology gap and managerial inefficiency compared to those in the tropical and subtropical regions. Considering in future that China's population will continue to shift from inland areas to coastal areas, especially large coastal cities, each province should take targeted policies to improve environmental performance according to their own situation. The COVID‐19 pandemic has tremendously reshaped the landscape of education worldwide, shifting digital learning from a substitute to a possible necessity in a time of uncertainty. This study explored the digital learning experience for children in China during and after the lockdown periods from February 2020 to January 2022, with a particular focus on the urban–rural divide. Forty‐eight semi‐structured interviews were conducted with fifth‐ and sixth‐grade students, parents and teachers to obtain multiple perspectives regarding children's digital learning in YY County in southwestern China. This study revealed that the urban–rural digital divide is not rooted in differences in minimal access to digital devices per se but rather in meaningful access to make full use of those devices for extended learning purposes. The major barriers that give rise to the digital divide include teachers' technology challenges, internet addiction among children and a lack of parental supervision of children's digital use. However, digital learning also offers an opportunity to address educational inequality. This study calls for empowering rural teachers and parents to better support children's digital needs and boost their digital learning experience. Well‐designed virtual interventions, school‐ and community‐based programmes and policy interventions are potential solutions to address the needs of rural teachers, parents and children. China's energy-intensive industries utilize the leading proportion of coal to meet the demand for its industrial outputs, while on the other hand, these industries also assure the provision of livelihood to millions of people, and capping the share of coal consumption for these industries can adversely affect the industrial and economic growth of China. Thus, to achieve the Pareto improvement between environmental pollution and industrial output growth, it is essential to comprehend the patterns of coal consumption in these industries. Hence, the present research intended to analyze the potential drivers of coal consumption by applying a joint LMDI, DEA, and the production theoretical decomposition approach. Findings indices that, first, industrial output growth was the crucial driver to simulate the industrial coal consumption, while the potential coal intensity and coal technology changes exhibited the reverse effect. Second, the coal inputs and industrial output efficiency, along with the improvements in technological gaps, were found to be the imperative factors in decelerating coal consumption. Third, the energy industrial group was discovered to have more potentials of coal conversation as compared to the non-energy industrial group. Moreover, results also indicated that coal pure technical efficiency is accelerating coal growth, which revealed that coal can be saved by enhancing coal allocative efficiency. These findings laid the empirical ground to design a feasible coal conservation policy for achieving the imperative goals of environmental protection without compromising industrial output growth. Background: It is of great practical significance to study the intrinsic relationship between cultural capital, digital divide, cognitive ability, and health of older adults in the dual social context of population aging and the digital era. Methods: We analyzed data from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) initiated by the China Center for Social Science Surveys at Peking University. Physical health, mental health, and memory health were set as indicators of older adults, and the relationship between cultural capital, digital divide, cognitive ability, and health of older adults was examined by hierarchical regression with moderated mediated effect methods. Results: Improvement in the health of older adults is associated with an increase in the level of cultural capital; cultural capital may bridge the digital divide faced by older adults, which in turn promotes the improvement of the health of older adults; the higher the level of cognitive ability, the stronger the effect of cultural capital on the digital divide, and at the same time, the stronger the mediating effect of the digital divide; cultural capital has a more pronounced effect on the health of older male adults living in the city. Conclusions: The results of the study show that cultural capital can have a positive impact on the health of older adults, but there is urban-rural heterogeneity and gender heterogeneity, in which the digital divide plays a mediating role, and the enhancement of the cognitive ability of older adults will be conducive to the improvement of their health, so the health of older adults should be promoted by improving the level of their cultural capital and the ability of older adults to use digital technology, thus provide references for the protection of health of older adults. China's higher education system is one of the largest and most complex in the world, with a vast number of higher education institutions scattered across different provinces. Evaluating the efficiency, productivity change, and technology gaps of these institutions is significant for understanding their performance and identifying areas for improvement. In this context, this study employs three different approaches, DEA super-SBM, Malmquist Productivity Index, and Meta-Frontier Analysis, to evaluate the efficiency, productivity change, and technology gaps of China's provincial higher education systems. The study results revealed that the average higher education efficiency in China is 1.0015 for the study period of 2010–2021. A rapid and continuous increase was witnessed in higher education efficiency in China from 2014 to 2020. Meta-frontier and Group-frontier, higher education efficiency scores of low-level literate provinces are greater than middle and high-level literate provinces. However, the TGR of higher and middle-level literate provinces is greater than low-level literate provinces, indicating a superior technological level. The average MI score is 1.0034, indicating growth in productivity change. Efficiency change is the main determinant in higher education productivity growth instead of technological growth. The Middle and Low-level literate provinces witnessed growth in higher education productivity, while high-level literate provinces observed a decline in productivity change. The Kruskal-Wallis test provides evidence that a significant statistical difference exists among the three groups of education levels for the average scores of MI, EC, TC, and TGR. This study systematically analyses the nonlinear relationship between China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) and reverse green technological progress (RGTP) using fixed effects (FE) model based on panel data for 31 Chinese provinces from 2001 to 2020. We find that the link between China's OFDI and RGTP is an inverted U-shaped curve. In addition, environmental regulation and technology gaps all reduce the height of the inverted U-shaped inflection point. Environmental regulation prolongs the "climb" stage while technology gaps compress the "climb" stage of the inverted U-curve relationship significantly. This result is verified in further robustness tests. The four transmission mechanisms of China's OFDI on RGTP play a positive role: these findings may help policymakers to design more flexible and effective OFDI policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the proposal of "Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality" goals, China is facing a more serious carbon emissions reduction situation, and how the booming digital economy effectively helps China's carbon emissions reduction is one of the most urgent things that should be solved. To study the impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity, this paper is based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China (excluding Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) from 2011 to 2021, and applies the double-fixed effect model and the threshold effect model to study the impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity and the mechanism of its action, as well as to analyze the mechanism of the digital economy's action on carbon emission intensity from the perspective of technological innovation. The results of the study show that: i) The digital economy can reduce the intensity of regional carbon emissions; ii) The carbon emission reduction effect of the digital economy is non-linear, and its carbon emission reduction effect gradually increases with the level of development of the digital economy; iii) In addition to the direct impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity, it also has an indirect impact on carbon emissions through technological innovation; iv) There is regional heterogeneity in the carbon emission reduction effect of the digital economy, and the carbon emission reduction effect is more significant in the central and western parts of the country and regions with a high level of human capital development. Based on the conclusions obtained, this paper suggests: i) The rational integration of the digital economy and regional development should be strengthened; ii) Strong provinces in the digital economy should be encouraged to help weaker provinces, to narrow the "digital divide" between provinces; iii) Differentiated development strategies should be formulated in accordance with local conditions, to give full play to the optimal effect of the digital economy in carbon emission reduction. ICT has significantly transformed the traditional energy production and service methods, changed the correlation characteristics of energy consumption network, and contributed to the establishment of cross-regional, open, and synergistic energy ecological networks. In this paper, social network analysis (SNA), dynamic SYS-GMM model, and mediating effects model are employed to deliberate on the mechanism of ICT capital's influence on the spatial correlation of energy consumption from 2000 to 2019. Firstly, this study employs an enhanced gravity model to precisely delineate the spatial correlation network of energy consumption in China, further applies the SNA to analyze the network structural characteristics, and then uses the econometric model to investigate the influence mechanism and heterogeneity of ICT capital on the spatial correlation of energy consumption. The study demonstrates a progressive spatial correlation in energy consumption in China, with eastern provinces emerge as the center of the network, assuming the position of the "dominant player." Conversely, the central provinces act as the "bridge," and western provinces are positioned at the periphery, referred to as the "edge" of the network. ICT capital contributes to improving the energy consumption spatial correlation, mainly by stimulating green technology innovation, promoting industrial structure optimization, accelerating human capital accumulation, and reducing income inequality. As ICT capital expands, the eastern region becomes more preeminent as a network hub for energy consumption, the central region increases its dominance slightly, and the western region's marginal position does not change significantly. Furthermore, the presence of ICT capital significantly enhances the intensity of energy consumption spatial correlation more prominently for low-carbon pilot areas and high Internet level areas. This study guides provinces to fully utilize ICT capital to reach collaborative energy-saving goals, and promotes the breaking down of regional competitive barriers in energy systems to build cooperative energy conservation ecological networks. The rapid development of the Internet had a profound influence on the spatial distribution of economic output activities. On the basis of theoretical analysis, this study takes China's regions as research samples and construct a spatial econometric model to empirically analyze the impact of Internet development on regional productivity. The analysis reveals that the distribution of regional productivity in China had significant spatial correlation; regional productivity had positive spatial externalities; Internet development had significant promotion effects and positive spatial spillover effects to regional productivity, but the effects are heterogeneous in different subregions. The subregion analysis shows that the optimization effect of the Internet on regional productivity exhibits heterogeneity in different subregions. The threshold effect analysis reveals the increasing marginal effect of Internet development on regional productivity, and economic development and human capital supply are important factors restricting this marginal effect. Altogether, this study provides useful references on the positive effects of the Internet on regional productivity in the spatial dimension, and suggests that the policy makers can optimize the spatial distribution of regional productivity by promoting Internet access in various regions and narrowing the digital divide among regions. The extant literature demonstrates that the age‐related digital divide prevents older adults from enhancing their quality of life. To bridge this gap and promote active aging, this study explores the interplay between social networks and older adults' use of information and communication technology (ICT). Using an action‐oriented field research approach, we offered technical help (29 help sessions) to older adult participants recruited from western China. Then, we conducted content analysis to examine the obtained video, audio, and text data. Our results show that, first, different types of social networks significantly influence older adults' ICT use in terms of digital skills, engagement, and attitudes; however, these effects vary from person to person. In particular, our results highlight the crucial role of a stable and long‐term supportive social network in learning and mastering ICT for older residents. Second, technical help facilitates the building and reinforcing of such a social network for the participants. Realizing the synergy of regional economic growth and ecological development can not only effectively promote the construe -tion of ecological civilization, but also help accelerate the green transformation of the development mode. For this, from the perspective of strong sustainability and the common frontier theory, using the panel data of 285 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2020 and considering the characteristics of regional technological heterogeneity, this study used the three-stage SBM model based on the common frontier to measure urban ecological total factor productivity. The study also used the spatial Durbin panel model to analyze the spatial spillover effects and influencing factors of urban ecological total factor productivity. The findings showed that: (J) After excluding the influence of external environmental factors and random factors, the ecological total factor productivity of each region decreased significantly compared with that before the improvement. From the perspective of average efficiency by region, there was a characteristic of east>northeast>west>center. © Under different spatial weight matrices, urban ecological total factor productivity had obvious spatial spillover effects, and there were differences in characteristics. © From the perspective of geographical location, economic development level, and resource endowment differences, the spatial spillover effects of ecological total factor productivity in China's eastern regions and non-resource depletion cities were more obvious, while those in the central and western regions, northeastern regions, and resource depletion cities were average. © The improvement of urban ecological total factor productivity could not be separated from the cooperation and exchange between neighboring regions, thus forming a development pattern of partnership with mutual benefits. With China's rapid economic development, disparities within provinces have increased, leading to significant regional inequality. The goal of financial inclusion is to provide financial services to lag-behind regions and disadvantaged groups to promote economic growth and enhance competitiveness. Further investigation is needed to determine whether digital financial inclusion has contributed to greater inclusion or aggravated regional inequality due to the digital divide. The main aim of this study is to examine the inclusive effects and competitiveness gains of digital financial inclusion from the perspective of regional inequality. By analyzing 23 Chinese provinces from 2011 to 2019 through the panel fixed effects model, the results support the existence of a digital divide, which creates regional inequality. Further analysis of the moderating effects reveals that the elimination of the digital divide by digital competitiveness reduces the effect of regional inequality's impact on digital financial inclusion. The advantages of digital financial inclusion to improve competitiveness are already beginning to emerge. This paper reveals that digital financial inclusion has a non-linear threshold effect. At a time of rapid growth in digital financial inclusion, it is crucial to be aware of the inequalities brought on by the digital divide and, more importantly, to capture the beneficial effects of digital competitiveness to enhance regional competitiveness. China's New Energy Vehicle (NEV) industry has entered an accelerated development stage, with the technology innovation efficiency becoming an essential factor affecting the speed of its development. Therefore, to explore ways to improve the efficiency of technology innovation, this paper divides the technology innovation process into two stages: the research and development (R&D) stage and the commercialization stage. This paper introduces a framework for evaluating the technology innovation efficiency of NEV enterprises based on data envelopment analysis (DEA), meta-frontier, and tobit regression. Then, the technology innovation efficiencies of 45 vehicle, battery, and motor & electronic control NEV enterprises are analyzed. The results show that: (i) During the survey period, the overall technology innovation capability of Chinese new energy vehicle enterprises is not strong, especially regarding economic transformation. However, the general development trend is on the rise. (ii) Different types of enterprises have different technology gap ratios in the two stages. The technology innovation efficiency level of motor and electronic control enterprises is relatively weak in the new energy vehicle industry. (iii) Many measures can be implemented to help improve technology innovation efficiency: encouraging the large-scale development of enterprises, reasonably increasing the shareholding ratio of significant shareholders, improving the ratio of capital investment, stimulating the vitality of innovation within the enterprise, and optimizing the number of employees. This study uses the 2020 China Rural Revitalization Survey to investigate the associations between cooperative membership, E-commerce adoption, and household income. Using the conditional mixed process framework, we find that cooperative membership promotes rural households' e-commerce adoption, and cooperative membership and e-commerce adoption significantly increase rural household income. The two-stage predictor substitution approach confirms this result. Further, participating in different types of cooperatives has heterogeneous effects on the e-commerce adoption decision and household income growth. However, regardless of whether or which cooperative households participate in, e-commerce adoption significantly increases household income. Policymakers can work with e-commerce enterprises, leverage the current cooperatives, especially the village stock economic and market cooperative, and set up e-commerce cooperatives to popularize e-commerce-related knowledge to encourage e-commerce adoption among rural households. Further, considering the regional disparities in e-commerce adoption, it is essential to strengthen the policy support for the rural households residing in Central and Western China to narrow the "digital divide." Digital literacy has become increasingly important for individuals to participate in regular economic activities, including employment, consumption, and investment. This paper quantitatively defines digital literacy with recently released household survey data in China and describes the digital divide across regions and ages. We further show that digital literacy increases risky asset ownership in the financial market among the middle-aged and elderly population. In this sense, this paper identifies a novel factor that affects financial investment. These findings imply that the digital divide may lead to the asset divide and wealth inequality. At a time when the population is aging and the digital divide among older adults is becoming increasingly prominent, the research on the smartphone use behavior of the older adult in China is slightly insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to develop a smartphone acceptance model for older adults in China to predict the factors of their behavioral intention to use smartphones. Using Stimulus-organism-response (SOR) theory as the framework, planned behavior theory, self-efficacy theory and technology acceptance model as the theoretical basis, and employed a mixed quantitative and qualitative research approach to analyze the data from 244 older adults using structural equation modeling. The results show that technology anxiety, subjective norms, self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, facilitating conditions, and perceived ease of use had significant effects on the behavioral intention smartphones among older adults. In addition, perceived usefulness was directly influenced by subjective norms and perceived ease of use, facilitating conditions significantly influenced perceived ease of use and self-efficacy, and subjective norms and self-efficacy significantly affect technology anxiety. This study expanded the applicability of SOR framework, further expanded the technology acceptance model, and enriched the theory of smart phone use behavior of older adults users. The results of this study provide a valuable theoretical framework for the study on older adults users' behaviors and have implications for the design and marketing of smartphones with high acceptancy from older adults. With the widespread use of social media platforms, human-technology interactions in platform environments provide a new perspective for understanding digital inequality. This article constructs a conceptual framework through the analytical tool of "platform affordance" to reveal how the mutual construction of humans and technology extends the boundaries of digital inequality beyond structural factors. The framework considers the positive sequential relationship between technology-efficacy and self-efficacy, highlighting their dominant role in promoting stratified uses and outcomes on social media platforms. Using survey data from Sina Weibo users in China, we find that users' perceptions of the location of the feature's icon and methods of operation shape online content creation through their perceived capabilities and needs, resulting in an unequal distribution of digital capital. On the one hand, platform affordance weakens the mechanisms that reproduce social inequality; it does so by revealing the fundamental role of interaction between technological properties and personal expectations in guiding online activities. On the other hand, platform affordance also reshapes how social structural factors operate; it does so by triggering moderating effects of personal and positional characteristics on the relationship between technology-efficacy and self-efficacy. Addressing the digital divide that plagues rural areas has become an important issue in narrowing the urban–rural gap and achieving common prosperity. This article examines the impact of network infrastructure on rural households' ability to cross the digital divide by using the "broadband rural" strategy as a proxy variable for network infrastructure and combining data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) with a score propensity matched difference-in-differences model (PSM-DID). The results show that network infrastructure can help farmers cross the access and use divide, but does not contribute significantly to crossing the ability divide in the current period. A triple difference model (DDD) was introduced to test the effect of network technology training on the contribution of network infrastructure to the ability gap, and the ability gap needs to be based on the use gap, so there is a delay in the response of the ability gap to policy. Further analysis reveals that network infrastructure mainly facilitates non-farm occupational groups to cross the capability divide, and facilitates middle-aged and young people to cross the digital divide, and does not have significant effects on groups involved in agricultural work and older people. In view of this, the network infrastructure should be continuously promoted, public service training on digital skills should be organized, electronic products and information services should be created exclusively for the elderly group and the group involved in agricultural production, and the ability of farmers to apply the network to their production life should be strengthened. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2013 to 2020, this paper uses the panel fixed effect model and threshold regression method to systematically examine the impact of the urban-rural digital divide on regional environmental development from the perspective of technological innovation and human capital. The study found that the urban-rural digital divide significantly inhibited regional environmental development; however, this inhibitory effect will be substantially reduced in technological innovation and human capital adjustment. Furthermore, technological innovation and human capital have played a significant single threshold effect in the impact of the urban-rural digital divide on regional environmental development. When technological innovation and human capital cross the corresponding threshold value, the adverse effects of the urban-rural digital divide on the regional environment will be alleviated. Therefore, it is suggested to strengthen the construction of rural information infrastructure; research and develop key technologies for ecological protection and environmental governance; build an ecological environment science and technology innovation system; and promote the sharing of human resources in the region and the ability of rural residents to apply digital resources and digital technology. In China, highly educated adults seek online cancer information more frequently than less educated adults. This health-related digital divide may impede the less-educated from effectively preventing cancer. To explicate the divide, we introduce informational subjective norms (ISN) and information sufficiency threshold (IST) as two socio-psychological mediators between education level and online cancer information seeking (OCIS) frequency. ISN represents one's perceived social pressure about seeking cancer information, while IST manifests individual evaluation of the amount of information needed to prevent cancer. An online survey supported a serial mediation effect of ISN and IST. ISN and IST also independently mediated the relationship between education level and OCIS frequency. Besides, the mediation effect of ISN was stronger than that of IST. The findings suggest that increasing ISN among less educated Chinese adults could facilitate their OCIS and to narrow the health-related digital divide. Mitigating the digital divide is essential for the sustainable development of education. To provide distance access which ensures equality in education for both urban and rural students, online learning has been emphasized in the post COVID-19 period. However, some challenges to total online learning have been described, such as isolation and the lack of in-time interaction due to the separation between teachers and students. The mobile augmented reality (AR) learning approach has the potential to combine real-world and online objects to promote interaction in total online learning. However, researchers have found that teachers and students might feel frustrated while handling too much information to deal with complex tasks in AR learning without appropriate scaffolding, which might reinforce the digital divide. Therefore, there is a need to propose a dual scaffolding-embedded AR learning approach to mitigate the urban-rural digital divide rather than a single form of scaffolding for either teachers or students. A quasi-experiment was conducted by recruiting 173 sixth-grade students from four classes of urban and rural schools in southern China. The longitudinal results showed that the proposed approach effectively improved both urban and rural students' learning achievement, higher-order cognition, and self-efficacy. The comparison of the students' learning outcomes indicated that it was helpful to mitigate the digital divide between rural and urban students through the proposed approach. These findings provide insights for school administrators to provide relational and suitable scaffolding-embedded mobile AR learning to support total online education for mitigating the urban and rural digital divide in the post COVID-19 period. In recent years, the proportion of added value of China's cultural industry to GDP has been increasing year by year. However, due to different levels of economic development and cultural resources, there are significant differences in the development of cultural industries in different regions. This study considers a sustainable positive externality by setting the patent as a new output and employs the non‐radial directional distance function in the framework of meta‐frontier to investigate the innovative performance of China's cultural industry because of regional disparities. Our main findings are that there is a major technological gap among the eastern region, the central region and the western region, in which the technical and management capabilities of the eastern region are far greater than those of the central and western regions; Cultural industries have greater room for improvement in the eastern, central and western regions, especially the western region; The efficiency level of the cultural industry is likely to be related to the local economic strength. The pervasive penetration of the smartphone has disproportionately affected adolescents and youth more than any other sociodemographic group. Inspired by the conceptual framework of the digital divide in internet use, this research aims to interrogate the multi-dimensional aspects of disparities in smartphone use among teens in China. Measurement was developed to assess the first-, second-, and third-level divide as manifested in smartphone access and engagement in a variety of activities, different skill sets, and myriad outcomes and consequences. Inclusive green growth (IGG) has become a worldwide consensus to achieve the target of sustainable development goals. Although the prominent role of digital finance (DF) against the pandemic has drawn considerable attention from policymakers, its plausible effect on IGG and underlying mechanisms have not been distinctly explored in academia. The aim of the study is to explore the causal effect of DF on IGG based on prefecture city-level data from 2011 to 2019 in China. To this end, we employed the non-radial direction distance function approach within the global production technology to evaluate the aggregate IGG performance and its three sub-dimensions. The empirical results demonstrate that DF exerts a significant promotional effect on urban IGG. This finding continues to survive in an extensive set of robustness checks using an alternative dependent variable, model specifications, instrumental variable, and difference-in-difference approaches to address the endogeneity concerns. Meanwhile, sub-dimensional regressions show that this positive effect is driven predominantly by the scale economy of DF, while the depth of usage and digitalization playing a minor role. Moreover, we uncover that DF enhances IGG by leveraging greater marginal product of labor rather than capital, improving environmental externalities, increasing fuller employment, and reducing rural–urban income inequality. However, we also reveal the dark side of DF on imbalanced regional development. The promotional effect of DF on IGG is only prominent for cities with better inherent comparative advantages, and we are thus likely to see a widening digital divide resulting from the "Matthew effect" on regional disparity without timely policy interventions. Improving agricultural energy efficiency is essential in reducing energy consumption and achieving agricultural sustainable development. This paper aims to measure the agricultural total-factor energy efficiency in China rather than the partial-factor energy efficiency while taking full account of regional heterogeneity and to investigate the driving factors of agricultural total-factor energy efficiency. The empirical results showed that the average value of agricultural total-factor energy efficiency is 0.814 in China, and the technological gap ratio is 0.853. The regional difference in agricultural total-factor energy efficiency was quite obvious. Higher agricultural energy inputs are associated with higher agricultural total-factor productivity. The total value of potential agricultural energy savings in 30 provinces of China reached 1704.41 billion tons of standard coal. In terms of the absolute amount of agricultural energy saving, the amount was largest in the low-energy-input area, which was 113.87 million tons of standard coal, accounting for 66.81% of the total potential saving amount. Furthermore, we used the Tobit model to analyze the influencing factors of agricultural total-factor energy efficiency. We found that the proportion of agriculture to GDP has a positive impact on agricultural total-factor energy efficiency, while the per capita income of farmers, fiscal support for agriculture, the illiteracy rate of farmers, agricultural labor input, and agricultural capital stock have a negative impact on agricultural total-factor energy efficiency. Technology has played an increasingly important role in the competition between the US-led West and China, and the geo-technological perspective, which focuses on the interaction between technology and geopolitics as well as major-power competition, has come to the forefront. Chips lay the foundation for the development of multiple emerging and critical technologies. With the advent of a digital era of major-power competition, chip security has become a key underpinning of national economic, technological, and military security. The US has been advancing its chip containment against China with domestic and external balancing acts. It pays attention to the linkage of domestic and external policies and combines short-term measures with longterm strategies, in order to widen the technological gap between China and the US in the chip field and hinder the development of China's chip technology and industry. Through a Modern American Industrial Strategy, the US strives to improve its R&D and manufacturing capabilities of advanced chips and has stepped up its blockade of China’s chip technology in terms of export controls and investment review. Besides, the US has taken the lead in building a multi-level and modular “chip alliance,” trying to strengthen cooperation with allies in intellectual property and technology protection, R&D of chip technology, and reshaping of chip ecosystem. It has also focused on giving play to the strengths of different forces including the government, enterprises, and scientific research institutions. Meanwhile, the US faces many constraints in promoting its chip suppression on China, for example the internal competition in the US chip industry, conflicts between the US government and chip companies, and differences between the US and its allies. This study estimates the effects of the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure on rural employment and income. We use a triple‐difference framework and exploit the geographic variation of the recent universal telecommunication service in China. Empirical results reveal increased broadband adoption after the implementation of the program with governmental subsidy. The universal telecommunication service led to an increase in rural residents' income and their employment in the non‐agricultural sector, especially salaried work. The efficient allocation of sports resources for optimal outcomes remains a pressing national endeavour in China. Over the past two decades, substantial investments by provincial and national governments have been directed toward sports infrastructure development. This initiative aims to foster sports talent, facilitate excellence, host major sporting events, and enhance national pride and soft power. This study employs a comprehensive methodology encompassing Data Envelopment Analysis-Slack Based Measure (DEA-SBM), Meta Frontier Analysis, and Malmquist Productivity Index to assess Sports Resource Utilization Efficiency (SRUE), Technological Gap Ratio (TGR), and Productivity Growth (MI) across China's 31 provinces and 3 distinct regions for the period 2010–2021. The findings indicate that China's average SRUE stands at 0.6307, revealing an inefficiency of 36.93% in sports resource utilization. Noteworthy efficiency was observed in Beijing, Chongqing, Henan, Shaanxi, Shanghai, and Tianjin during the study duration. Furthermore, a consistent upward trajectory in SRUE from 2010 to 2021 highlights gradual and sustained progress. Comparatively, the eastern region showcases higher technological advancement (average TGR of 0.7598) than the central and western regions. The Malmquist Productivity Index (MI), with an average value of 1.05391, highlights a substantial 5.39% productivity growth. Notably, technological advancement emerges as the primary driver of this productivity increase, evident through the higher Total Factor Productivity Change (TC) of 1.0312 compared to the Efficiency Change (EC) of 1.0209. The Central region's outperforming productivity growth is noteworthy relative to the Eastern and Western regions. This study examines the relationship between high-speed railway (HSR) and tourism efficiency using a difference-in-differences (DID) model and a global data envelopment analysis (DEA) decomposition analytical framework with a sample of 280 cities in China from 2003 to 2018. We provide both robust estimates of tourism efficiency and scrutiny of whether and how the opening of HSR affects tourism efficiency. The findings reveal that the opening of HSR can contribute to efficiency growth, largely due to its role in optimising resource allocation. However, HSR can also negatively affect efficiency growth by widening the technological gap between regions. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) provides new opportunities and great space for China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) cooperation, as evidenced in 2018 when it financed US$15.64 billion in 56 countries along this burgeoning economic path, targeting Europe, Africa, and Asia as its hot spots. However, most of the countries along the Belt and Road are low-growth, middle-income, and developing economies, and their infrastructure, export trade, and other factors play an important role in the security and efficiency of OFDI. Therefore, this research selects 60 countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa as the objects and uses the common boundary SBM model to calculate the investment efficiency of 7 indicators from 2013 to 2017. The results show a significant regional gap in the efficiency of China's total foreign investment. The efficiency scores of European countries are generally better than those of Asian and African countries, while the technology gaps of countries in Asia and Europe are higher than that in Africa. The efficiencies of three major indicators, FDI, infrastructure development indicator (IDI), and export trade (ET), exhibit four types of distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to coordinate and optimise the proper investment layout, enhance China's investment quality in countries along the Belt and Road, strengthen exchanges and cooperation between think tanks, and promote further construction of BRI. Digital rural development has become an emerging dynamic force for high-quality rural development in China. This paper constructs the "environmental-economic-social" analysis framework for digital rural development, analyzes the spatial variation of the digital rural development level (DRDL) in Chinese counties in 2020, and conducts the factor detection and interaction detection of its influencing factors. It is found that: (1) digital rural development has its own unique spatial differentiation mechanism, which can be analyzed from three dimensions: environmental system, economic system, and social system, which play a fundamental role, decisive role, and a magnifying effect on digital rural development, respectively. (2) The DRDL in China's counties has significant spatial distribution, spatial correlation, and spatial clustering characteristics. The DRDL in general shows a decreasing distribution trend from coastal to inland regions, and the overall differences in DRDL mainly come from intra-regional differences rather than inter-regional differences. The rural infrastructure digitalization dimension has stronger spatial correlation while the spatial correlation of the rural governance digitalization dimension is weaker. There are obvious hotspot and coldspot areas in the DRDL, with large differences between the coldspot and hotspot areas of different sub-dimensions. (3) The spatial divergence of the DRDL is closely related to geographical elements and is the result of the combined effect of several geographical factors. The factor detection results show that the dominant factors within the four regions are significant different. The interaction detection results show that the driving force of the two-factor interaction is stronger than that of the single-factor interaction and that the interaction among the factors further deepens the spatial differentiation of the DRDL. The digital divide between rural and urban areas is becoming the key factors resulting educational imbalance, which might be exacerbated by differences in teachers' digital teaching competence. Therefore, it was crucial to explore the divide and determinants of digital teaching competence between rural and urban teachers. A large-scale survey was conducted with 11,784 K–12 teachers in China (43.40% from rural schools and 56.60% from urban schools). First, this study investigated potential factors for teachers' digital teaching competence, including information and communication technology (ICT) attitude, ICT skills, and data literacy. Second, the data indicated the digital divide existed, i.e., the ICT attitude, ICT skills, data literacy, and digital teaching competence of rural teachers were significantly lower than those of urban teachers. Third, the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method demonstrated that data literacy and ICT skills were the most important determinants of the divide in digital teaching competence between rural and urban teachers.
