This article is drawn from research in an ongoing multiple case study of the identity constructions of tertiary-level border-crossing students from mainland China to Hong Kong. It begins by outlining the contextual and conceptual background of the study, followed by the presentation and discussion of the three aspects of identity being constructed, including contestation against place-of-origin stereotypical identification, passive resistance against power regulations exerted by the original context and critical critiques of the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese societies. This paper argues that, compared with the Bologna process, the parallel but inverse-directional characteristics of the border crossing between mainland China and Hong Kong have significant implications on student mobility across the internal and external European borders, which are greatly influenced by the global context, against a background of the internationalisation of higher education worldwide. The present study examines the trend of urban women’s domestic role orientation in the wake of market transition in post-Mao China. During the 2005–7 period, we conducted in-depth interviews with 115 married women, who either currently held a job or had retreated to the home from workplaces, of both Mao and post-Mao cohorts in four large cities. It is found that women’s growing domestic orientation mainly stems from labor commodification and denigration, as the party-state scaled back its welfare provisions and commitment to social justice, on the one hand, and unleashed market forces, on the other. Therefore, women’s domestic orientation, rather than a mere reflection of persistent traditional culture, may be seen as their refusal to be commodified and passive resistance to labor denigration in the new age of economic liberalism. This essay argues that Edward Said's idea of 'traveling theory' cannot form the argumentative basis for all theories due to its consideration of the exclusive phenomenon of creative variation in the traveling of theories. The author suggests studying the reception of Benjamin's idea of the art of mechanical reproduction in China through an investigation of how the inertia of cultural traditions and political moods cooperate to form the receptive conditions. This essay contends that this process of reception can be roughly divided into two phases: the characteristic of the first phase is depoliticization, and that of the second phase is academicization. Based on different social and historical circumstances, the author points out that when Benjamin's theoretical construction is read in a depoliticized way, it simply means a political strategy of passive resistance; when his political content attracts people's attention, the way of talking about politics is already a depoliticized discursive practice, because as a balancing point of governmental interests and intellectuals' interests, academic autonomy has already finished the transformation of academics' political libido into academic libido, thus incorporating it into its own forces. The article focuses on the views of art and literary workers in China about the student-led democratic movement. The students are on a hunger-strike at Tiananmen Square. The workers are calling on students to end their hunger strike. In the last month, the students' patriotic action for democracy and law, against corruption, and for reform has been a most valuable action. The people have already given it a just and fair evaluation. All artistic and literary workers in the country sincerely hope that the students will end the hunger strike as soon as possible in order to recover their health. This is the wish of all artistic and literary workers in the country as well as the hope of the 1.1 billion people of China. The situation in Tiananmen cannot continue. The only correct choice is for the party and government to hold a truly equal dialogue with the students immediately.
