This study endeavors to employ a balanced design methodology, aiming to equilibrate the resistance to rutting and cracking exhibited by hot in-place recycling asphalt mixtures containing a high dose of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). The primary goal is to ascertain the optimal amount of new binder necessary for practical engineering applications, ensuring a balanced rutting and crack resistance performance of recycled asphalt mixtures. The investigation mainly employed wheel-tracking tests and semi-circular bending tests to assess the rutting and cracking performance of recycled asphalt mixtures with a different dose of RAP (in China, it is common to use RAP with 80% and 90% content as additives for preparing hot in-place recycling asphalt mixtures), and varying quantities of new binders (10%, 20%, and 30% of the binder content in the total RAP added). The results indicated that the addition of new binder reduced the resistance to rutting of the recycling asphalt mixtures but improved their resistance to cracking. Furthermore, for the recycling asphalt mixture with 80% RAP content aged for 5 days, the optimal new binder content is 1.52%, while the mixture with 90% RAP content requires 1.23% of new binder. After 10 days of aging, the optimal new binder content for the recycling asphalt mixture with 80% RAP content is 1.55%, while the mixture with 90% RAP content requires 1.28% of new binder. At present, the resource utilization of solid waste in China is facing prominent problems such as high production intensity, insufficient utilization, and low added value of products. The preparation of biomass composites from biomass solid waste and plastic solid waste reduces not only environmental pollution and energy consumption but also promotes the high-value utilization of solid waste. So, the characterization and preparation experiments of samples with two different biomass are carried out. The wheat straw fiber and corn straw fiber were added into the bio-asphalt mixture with the content of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4%, respectively, with the content of 9% and 12% bio-heavy oil. The physical properties and rheological properties of asphalt were analyzed and evaluated by three indexes and a dynamic shear rheological test. Through the rutting test and immersion Marshall test, heightemperature performance and biological asphalt mixture's water stability were evaluated. The results show that straw fiber can improve bio-asphalt mixture's road performance, especially the performance of high-temperature rutting. When the fiber content of bio-asphalt with 9% bio-heavy oil content is 0.3%, the physical properties and rheological properties of bio-asphalt are the best. Rutting has been one of the primary concerns for highway engineers in China. Granulated polymer anti-rutting additive may be an effective way to solve this problem. However, it is difficult to find previous research on the application of granulated polymer as an anti-rutting additive in different types of asphalt mixtures. This research aims to investigate the influences of the anti-rutting additive contents on road performances based on different types of asphalt mixtures, and also explores potential reasons for road performance improvement. Three types of asphalt mixtures: dense-graded asphalt concrete (DG-AC), dense-graded Superpave (DG-Superpave)，semi-open-graded asphalt macadam (SOG-AM), were included. Road performances, including high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance and moisture susceptibility, were studied at three anti-rutting additive percentages: 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4% weight of the asphalt mixture. The mixtures without the anti-rutting additive were regarded as control groups. In order to better analyse the road performance improvements, the properties of modified asphalt with 0.4% anti-rutting additive were studied, as well as the anti-rutting additive physical form in the asphalt mixture. It was found that the anti-rutting additive improved mixture's high-temperature performance significantly while its effects on low-temperature performance were not so. It reduced low-temperature tensile strain within 12.9% range. Moisture susceptibility was improved greatly after adding 0.2% anti-rutting additive as compared to the corresponding control groups. By increasing the additive contents to 0.3 and 0.4%, the moisture susceptibility had no significant difference compared with that of the 0.2% additive content group. Road performance improvements may relate to the combined action of reinforcement and gap filling by the elongated anti-rutting additive, as well as asphalt modification within short time. When the additive content is no more than 0.3%, the materials costs of the additive-modified asphalt mixtures are less than that of SBS-modified asphalt mixtures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Application of sandstone in cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) is an effective way to utilize sandstone. To determine the feasibility of using sandstone as a CSM aggregate, a series of experimental investigations, such as unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, Brazilian splitting tests and freeze-thaw cycle tests, were conducted on sandstone cement-stabilized macadam (SCSM). Three mixed variables, covering the cement content, aggregate type and curing period, were set as influence factors. The testing results indicated that the UCS, indirect tensile strength (ITS) and frost resistance property of the test-pieces increased with cement content and curing age. Considering the asphalt pavement design specifications for China, the UCS and ITS values of the SCSM complied with the requirements of light traffic road construction before freeze-thaw cycles. However, the SCSM subjected to freezing and thawing meets the requirements only when the cement content is 4.5%. Therefore, it is noteworthy that CSM containing sandstone aggregates should be applied with caution in cold region because of insufficient freeze resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The coupled heat-light-water aging device has been proposed and developed. • The aging performance of HVA in complex environmental conditions was investigated. • The significance of different aging factors on road performance of HVA were demonstrated. • The microstructural morphologies revealed the aging mechanisms. During the rapid development of sponge city construction in China, the porous asphalt pavement has been widely applied. The high viscosity modified asphalt that is used for producing porous asphalt experiences complex aging circumstances. In this study, the aging performance of high viscosity modified asphalt was evaluated based on the simulated heat-light-water coupled conditions, in which different aging effects and degrees were considered. The complex aging simulation method was innovated that mainly composed of an UV radiator and an environmental cabinet. The dynamic shear properties, high and low-temperature performance, and microstructural morphology of aged high viscosity modified asphalt binders were evaluated through the DSR (temperature-frequency sweep scan, LAS, MSCR), BBR, and ESEM tests, respectively. The results of DSR and BBR test demonstrated that the coupled aging effects should be considered during the service period, since acid rain solution and UV light also led to significant influences on the viscoelastic properties, high and low-temperature performance, and fatigue performance as similar as high temperature. The observation of the microstructures illustrated the aging mechanisms of different environmental factors and their combined effects. This study could provide a better protocol for aging performance examination of high viscosity modified asphalt binder used for porous asphalt pavement considering complicated environmental conditions. The high-modulus asphalt mixture produced by hard asphalt has played a good role in reducing asphalt pavement rutting and improving pavement durability. It was widely used in the construction of various levels of road engineering in Europe. However, low-grade hard asphalt was rarely used in road engineering in China, and the use of hard asphalt for the design and construction of high modulus asphalt mixtures lacks sufficient engineering experience. Considering the above issues, comparative research on the performance of Chinese and French low-grade hard asphalt and mixture was carried out. In this paper, the performance of French 15# hard asphalt commonly used for EME (Enrobés à Module Elevé Class) high modulus asphalt mixture and China 15# hard asphalt was analyzed comparatively, where six typical high modulus asphalt mixtures corresponding to two low-grade hard asphalts were designed referring to the design requirements of French high modulus asphalt mixtures. The road performance of a high-modulus asphalt mixture was evaluated to verify the feasibility of its application in engineering. The research results show that the performance indicators of both Chinese and French asphalts meet the requirements of binder materials used in high modulus asphalt mixtures, and the performance of their corresponding mixtures of the two asphalts also meet the specifications of high modulus asphalt mixtures. However, the two asphalts and the performance of their corresponding mixture are slightly different. The high modulus asphalt mixture of Chinese low-grade hard bitumen can be used well in road engineering applications in China.
