Objective: To establish a tracing system for full drug processing based on the drug supply, processing and distribution (SPD) system. Methods: Key links concerning drug storage, maintenance, inventory checking and dispensing were analyzed, and in combination with the advanced SPD system of the hospital, drug tracing was achieved by the approaches of drug batch number, electronic drug monitoring codes and bar codes. Results: By the tools based on drug batch number, electronic drug monitoring codes or bar codes, full process tracing from drug manufacturers to patients or users was realized. The tracing data formed in the Chongqing drug exchange platform could provide evidence for decision-making by the drug supervisor. Conclusion: The full process tracing system for drug management was thus established, and it could ensure drug quality and safe medication of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
