Abstract: This article explores the relationship between a specific political economy and its developmental impacts by analyzing how the Zona Bananera in the north of the Department of Magdalena, Colombia, was configured by the emergence of an agro-exportation model between 1850 and 1930. The review of gubernatorial reports and statistical data highlights how the development deriving from this model concentrated benefits to a small landowning class, which magnified the unequal distribution of land in the area. Therefore, this article documents the negative social consequences deriving from this type of development, particularly in frontier societies like the one in Magdalena at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. This work aims to describe the emergence of the Centro de Historia de Manizales as an institutional space whose purpose was to promote studies on regional history during the second decade of the 20th century. The text explains were the conditions that facilitated the creation and existence of this Centro in a space far from the Colombian capital and analyze the reasons to explain why the main achievement of this Project, the Archivo Historial journal (1918-1934), did not could have continuity. However, some aspects of regional and local history are mentioned in that magazine that was novel at the time. To carry out this research, I reviewed the copies of the journal, I analyzed the guidelines of the Academia Nacional de Historia during the period of existence of the publication. In particular, I paid attention to the guidelines on the creation of Centro de Historia outside the capital of the country. I also examined the personal correspondence of Enrique Otero D'Acosta, one of the main actors in the case of the journal Archivo Historial. In this way, the work studies aspects related to the writing of regional history in Colombia that had not been previously analyzed, such as the emergence of the Centro, the policies that gave rise to it, and the emergence of a publication such as the Center's journal. EMIGRATION & immigration , *LAND settlement , *RESOURCE exploitation , *LAND use , *SOCIOCULTURAL factors , *POLITICAL participation , *SOCIAL change - Abstract
The immigration and settling of natives from Boyacá in the páramo de Letras (departments of Caldas and Tolima), has had important repercussions in the use and exploitation of the region's natural resources, the transformation of its landscape, and the economic, social, and organizational and participatory patterns in the relevant zone. Notwithstanding the magnitude of the phenomenon and their importance it has had vis-à-vis the configuration of the region's subculture and development, apart from a few marginal references, there are no studies that account the causes that gave rise to the problem or the implications concerning the transformation of the natural, social, and cultural environment. In order to fill this gap, here we attempt an analysis of some of the socio-cultural elements behind this process, based on personal and family testimonies and accounts told by the immigrants from Boyacá and by other participants. We focus mainly on the transformation of the landscape, on new ways of political participation, and its effects on the beliefs, mores, and traditions of the people concerned. Emphasis is made on the economic, social, and cultural factors which fostered the immigration movement to begin with. We conclude that the reduction of an original vital space, plus different forms of violence with all its nuances, withered the old myth of passivity, and deeply-rooted attachment to the little plot of native soil usually ascribed to the 'boyacense' peasant, turning them rather into itinerant travelers in search of refuge and fortune far from their native land.
