The objective of this work was to evaluate the evidence regarding the presence of Aethina tumida in Apis mellifera hives in Colombia. Field surveys were carried out to diagnose and identify the presence of A. tumida in municipalities associated with the coffee-growing zone, isolating beetle specimens when possible, and extracting them from bee colonies in the brood chamber and fruit residues near the hives. Specimens were analyzed considering taxonomic keys and morphometric parameters, taking into account 18 variables. The presence of A. tumida was established in the localities of Dosquebradas and Pereira, Risaralda. The keys and morphometric variables agree with the specific structure of the specimen of A. tumida for the head, prothorax, pterothorax, abdomen, appendages and weight, unequivocal and differentiated characters concerning Cychramus luteus Fabricius 1787, which evidence the presence of the etiological agent. The findings after the capture and analysis of the small beetles confirm the presence of A. tumida in Apis mellifera hives in the Colombian coffee region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. Estimate the morphometric, phaneroptic, and four dominant gene diversity in backyard native birds with naked neck (Gallus domesticus L. Subspecie nudicollis) in the Sabanas subregion, department of Sucre - Colombia. Materials and methods. Overall, 650 adult birds (480 hens and 170 roosters) from 10 different locations, 14 morphometric variables, eight phaneroptics, and four dominant genes were measured. The data were subjected to descriptive analysis. Animals were compared between localities by means of the analysis of variance and Duncan test. Sexual dimorphism was evaluated from body weight and tarsal size, morphostructural harmony was evaluated from the correlations between the measurements, and the frequencies of the Frizzled feather, silky feather, pilopody, and polydactyly genes and their influence were estimated on four morphometric variables. Phaneroptic variables were evaluated using frequencies. Results. The analyzed descriptors showed a superiority in roosters than over hens as well as between localities (p<0.001). Bodyweight and tarsal length were sexual differentiators (p<0.001). Low bodily harmony was evidenced. The estimated allele frequencies were low except for the Polydactyly gene, because the birds with this gene were significantly larger (p<0.001). The phaneroptic characteristics describe a bird with normal brown plumage, white tarsi, a red lobe color, and a red-orange eye, with a simple crest and small-medium size in hens and medium-large in roosters. Conclusions. A heterogeneous population with great phaneroptic variability was found. There are indications of introgression of specialized breeds. The frequencies of the dominant genes were low, with higher performance for the characteristics BW, BL, TP, LL and WL in birds with polydactyly genotype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The highhat, Pareques acuminatus, is a carnivorous, small sized species, with distribution in the western Atlantic from North Carolina and Bermuda to Brazil. Studies on the biology and ecology of P. acuminatus are scarce and in Colombia no work has been done concerning this specie. For this reason, this study focused on knowing the biology of this sciaenid and determining ecological aspects in order to expand its knowledge in the Colombian Caribbean. Captures of the highhat were made by free diving between 2017 and 2018 and visual fish censuses were taken on the habitat where it was observed between 2017 and 2018. The morphometrics and meristics were taken, the reproductive phases identified, and the partial fecundity estimated by the gravimetric method. A total of 85 individuals were collected with a TL between 33 and 185 mm (123.7 ± 36.3 mm) with individuals between 121-142 mm (42%) as the more frequent, followed by 143-164 mm (20%). There were 39 females, 34 males and 12 indeterminate juvenile specimens. Females reach mature state with 118 mm TL, being an asynchronous species, with two reproductive phases (phase in development and phase capable of spawning). The estimated partial fecundity was 8744 ± 3900 oocytes, and the relative fecundity in relation to size was 64.15 ± 25.51 oocitos/mm with a diameter of 0.53 ± 0.04 mm. The highhat is a typical specie of shallow reef habitats, and was found mainly accompanied by Myripristis jacobus, Canthigaster rostrata, Haemulon steindachneri, H. flavolineatum, Stegastes partitus and Chromis multilineata between 2017 and 2018. For areas that supply underground water sources, it is important to identify the conditions of circulation and infiltration of surface water as a fundamental contribution to the recharge, sustainability and protection of aquifers. A study of the potential infiltration capacity considering the geomorphological aspects in the Arroyo Grande basin, Sucre, Colombia is presented. The aquifers of the study area are at risk of water supply due to the intense extraction and contamination by urban discharges in the surface currents of the basin. Morphometric indicators were applied to study the forms and dynamics of currents; For the estimation of the potential infiltration, the curve number method (CN-SCS) was used; all analyzes were performed with GIS tools. The results described the drainage conditions of the surface, identified the areas with the highest Infiltration potential over the Morroa aquifer, and the factors that directly influence the water regulation process. We present information related on the distribution, morphology and reproductive biology of Vampyriscus nymphaea in Colombia, based in the analysis of voucher specimens housed in Colombia collections. The known distribution of V. nymphaea in Colombia previously restricted to the western lowlands of the Cordillera Occidental in the Pacific region is extended to the Caribbean region and to the north-eastern part of the Cordillera Occidental, lower Cauca River Basin of Colombia. Both external and the skull morphology of the species were homogeneous; the analysis of the secondary sexual dimorphism among specimens from the Pacific area do not show significant differences, although, the length of the tibia and the deep of the skull were proportionally larger in males, and the zygomatic width in females. Concerning to the reproductive biology, we suggest that the populations of V. nymphaea present a polyestric pattern along the year but without defined peaks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive species are the second main cause of extinction after habitat loss. Lionfish, Pterois volitans (Linnaeus 1758), was seen by the first time in southern Florida in 1985. Since 2000 it has dispersed and established in the eastern coast of the United States and in Bermuda and Bahamas; since 2007 it has expanded through the Caribbean, appearing in oceanic Colombia in 2008 and in continental Colombia in 2009. In order to characterize the lionfish population inhabiting the Colombian Caribbean a literature revision was made as well as collects. Merisitc and morphometric data were taken in the laboratory from a sample of 63 specimens, 36.3-183.0 mm standard length (SL) (from a total of 280 collected individuals). The counts found were: dorsal fin XIII,11 (rarely XIII,12); anal fin III,7 (rarely III,8); pectoral fin 14 (rarely 13). The main measurements (in percentages of SL) found were head length 29,7 - 40,7% and eye diameter 5,6 - 9,1%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Some morphometric characteristics were evaluated in the watershed of creek Los Andes department of Antioquia (Colombia). The headwater has a small area (<20Km2) with main direction in the axis S-N, with an elevation range between 2.700 and 2.200 m. asl. It presents a network of drainage well structured, for which presents a time of concentration of the water over 5 hours. The watershed is of class Kc2 with a high slope and a system of drainage subdendritic. This research permitted to identify the uses of the soil, being the adequate use the one that presented greater percentage (55%) and the use is recommended conservationist in general for all headwater. The tropical freshwater fish Eremophylus mutisii is endemic to the Cundinamarca highland in Colombia. Skin samples (0.5×0.5 cm²) were taken from 11 specimens at six body parts (mandible, dorsal head, dorsal trunk, caudal trunk, medial trunk and abdominal area), fixed in 4% formaldehyde, dehydrated in 95% ethanol and 99% isopropanol, embedded in paraffin and sectioned at 5 μm. The skin is made of two mayor cutaneous layers (epidermis and dermis) and a subcutaneous layer (hypodermis). The epidermis presents three layers with secretory cells, epithelial cells and a few taste buds; the dermis is separated from the epidermis by a basal membrane. We observed fibroblasts, two layers of melanophors and some blood vessels; the hypodermis has vascularized adipose tissue. Skin thickness changes with body area; the dermis is thicker than the epidermis; skin has more club cells than mucous cells. The medial trunk area has the largest number of club and mucous cells.
