Abstract

THE STUDY MEASURED THE EFFECTS OF TRAINING IN A SERIES OF CLOZE PROCEDURE EXERCISES UPON READING COMPREHENSION. STUDENTS WERE INSTRUCTED TO FILL IN BLANK SPACES IN WRITTEN TEXT. THIS ACT OF CLOSURE ITSELF WAS CONSIDERED TO BE A NONOVERT REINFORCEMENT. STUDENTS (1,411) IN 49 CLASSROOMS PARTICIPATED IN THE STUDY. A CROSS-SECTIONAL GROUP WAS STUDIED FOR 3 WEEKS, AND A LONGITUDINAL GROUP FOR 12 WEEKS. THE STUDENTS WERE FROM GRADES 5, 7, 9, AND 11. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDED THAT READING COMPREHENSION WAS NOT IMPROVED BUT SUGGESTED OTHER POSSIBLE USES OF THE PROCEDURE. (JK)

Abstract

The article focuses on the history of Guilford Green in Connecticut. According to the author, Guilford Green used to be a place for raising cattle, burial ground, and a saw pit. Its transformation has adapted to the spiritual and societal patterns while maintaining the role as a center for the town for more than three and a half centuries. A brief historical overview of the turning point of the Guilford Green in 1815, the project of the feminine society "The United Workers for Public Improvement" for the green, and the Guilford Green in 1994 are presented.
