The article discusses the different approaches states take with respect to providing special education and early intervention services for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) under the U.S. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Due to the increase in the number of children being diagnosed with ASD at an earlier age, states have had to find cost-effective ways of meeting the statutory requirements of the IDEA. The author reviews state guidelines for the provision of early intervention and special education services for children with ASD in nine states including New Jersey, Connecticut and Ohio. The author found that the states had significantly different guidelines due to their differing political environment, fiscal situation and available resources.
