This paper is aimed at gathering some gauges related to increasing rates of alcohol consumption among young people and the jeopardy involved in binge drinking. Besides it displays a state of art of the national consumer trends based on the available data from which could be proposed a set of psychosocial issues to be researched in order to achieve a wide and deep comprehension of the origins and dynamic of the risky behaviors derived. This article is aimed at debating the concept of institution which underlies the reform proposal of Costa Rica's Patronato Nacional de la Infancia (Children's Welfare Institute) in order to thoroughly implementing the standpoint of the children and teenager's human rights. The analysis focuses on suggesting the bases of a renewed model of social insertion. The main discussion starts out by emphasizing the needed participation of the social agencies committed with this aim, whereas local governments should be involved and the leading function of the state body strengthened. A checklist of the fishes of the Coto River basin, southern Pacific, Costa Rica, compiled from field and museum surveys is presented. A total of 61 species, representing 48 genera, 26 families and 11 orders are listed. Peripheral species were dominant (44.3%), whereas secondary and primary freshwater species represented 32.8% and 23.9% of the total diversity. The orders Cyprinodontiformes (12 spp.) and Perciformes (11) and the families Poeciliidae (8) and Cichlidae (7) were the most diverse. Two species (Lutjanus guttatus and Polydactylus approximans) were new records for Costa Rican freshwaters and ten additional species were found to have expanded geographical ranges. An identification key and a complete photographic album of all fish species recorded are presented. This investigation provides a framework for future studies on fishes from this area complementing previous efforts seeking to increase our knowledge about the freshwater ichthyofauna of the central and southern Pacific regions of Costa Rica.

Over its first half century the Revista de Biología Tropical published many papers and supplements dealing with the botany. However, the Revista is not a primary botanical journal. A wide variety of topics and geographic sources have been included, taking into consideration species from the Neotropics, but also from India and Nigeria.
