Abstract: The experiment was realized at the Alfredo Volio Mata Experiment Station of the University of Costa Rica located at 1542 masl, during the last trimester of 2007. The objective was determine the consumption and quality of one year old Trypsacum laxum forage, by offering it to goats in three treatments (7,5 %, 10 % and 12,5 % of body weight) without any chopping process. Goats showed highest consumption (2200 kg/day) (p<0,01), when fodder content was 7.5 % body weight, but the nutritional composition did not present any differences (p>0,05); between treatments crude protein levels (8.45 to 8.87 %) were acceptable for such an old forage material. Abstract: The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of three forages: black sorghum (Sorghum almum), mulberry (Morus alba), and African star grass (Cynodom nlemfuensis), on the quantity and quality of goat milk. The experiment was carry out at the Alfredo Volio Mata Experiment Station of the University of Costa Rica located at 1542 masl, during the last trimester of 2007 on three groups of Lamancha goats. A repeated Latin square model was used. The highest milk yield was obtained when animals consumed African star grass (1.06 kg of milk/animal/day) (p<0.01) followed by Mulberry (0.89 kg of milk/animal/day) and Black sorghum (0.73 kg of milk/animal/ day); nevertheless, fat percentage, protein, casein, total solids and non fatty solids were improved when goats were fed with mulberry (p<0.01), and the lowest parameters were obtained with African star grass. Abstract: The investigation was developed at experimental station "Alfredo Volio Mata" of the University of Costa Rica during August, 2006. Three materials (Zea mays, Sorghum almun and Oryza sativa) were evaluated under hydroponic production systems. The highest production of fresh matter was given by sorghum (21,65 kg/720 cm2) that also showed the highest concentration of crude Protein (10,47 %). Rice was the material with superior levels of dry matters (15,82%) and ash (9,17%), while corn showed the fibber with highest quality. These results indicate that production of forage under hydroponics systems represents an alternative to grow forage fast and easy during adverse periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The objective was to quantify P use in 11 dairy farms located in the provinces of San Jose, Cartago and Alajuela. Data such as feed purchases, milk sales, purchase and removal of animals between January and December 2010 were used. In order to evaluate the use of P, three indicators that allowed analyzing farm efficiency were used. Total number of animals ranged from 39 to 242. The average annual milk production was 300 880 kg. Farm area varied between 1 and 116 ha. The 11 farms imported on the average 1214 (±1036) kg of phosphorous: 70% came from feed, 16% from fertilizers and 14% from mineral supplements. The farms exported 294 (±219) kg of phosphorous, of which 90% was exported in milk sold and only 10% in animals sold. Total P exported ranged between 136 and 876 kg. Farms imported 4.1 (± 0.8) g.kg-1 P of milk produced. In general, P balance was positive for all farms, indicating that more P entered the farm that came out in the form of product, showing that 65% of imported P remained on the farms. Strategies to reduce P excretion should be aimed at reducing P in the diets, since the largest P input is through imported feed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Considering the environmental and sanitary risks associated with the use of antibiotics in animal production, we used a microbiological method and an analytical method by HPLC to evaluate the presence of tetracyclines in 9 lots of animal feed for swine (n=4), tilapia fish (n=3) and broiler chicken (n=2) produced in Costa Rica. Up to 75% and 67% of the swine and tilapia feed samples analyzed gave positives results using both techniques, respectively. By contrast, the broiler chicken feed samples did not contain any of the three tetracyclines included in the tests. All positive swine feed samples contained chlortetracycline in concentrations higher than those allowed by the Costa Rican regulation. Positive tilapia feed samples contained oxitetracycline in concentrations equal or greater than those detected in swine feed. In addition, four samples exhibited inconsistencies between the concentrations of tetracyclines detected and the concentrations specified in their labels.
