This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of asymptomatic and subpatent P. falciparum infections in the city of Bouaké, Central Côte d'Ivoire, to compare the performance of three tests, and to investigate potential P. falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (pfhrp2) gene deletions. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in nine neighborhoods in Bouaké in 2016. Matched light microscopy (LM), rapid diagnostic test (RDT), and quantitative PCR (qPCR) data were used to determine the prevalence of P. falciparum infection and compare the performance of the three diagnostic tests. Pfhrp2/3 deletions were genotyped by digital PCR. Among 2313 individuals, 97.2% were asymptomatic and 2.8% were symptomatic. P. falciparum prevalence among symptomatic individuals was 25.8%, 30.3%, and 40.9% by LM, RDT, and varATS qPCR, respectively, and among asymptomatic individuals, it was 10.3%, 12.5%, and 34.9%. Asymptomatic infections comprised 96.4% of all malaria infections, with 58.2% detectable only by varATS qPCR. Although the prevalence of asymptomatic P. falciparum infections was higher in school-age children (5–14 years: 42.0%) compared to < 5 years (17.3%) and ≥ 15 years (35.9%), subpatent infections were more likely in ≥ 15 years (70.4%) than in < 5 years (39.7%) and school-age children (41.2%). LM and RDTs were reliable only at parasite densities > 10,000 parasites/µL. Individuals who were positive according to all three tests had significantly greater parasite density (856.8 parasites/µL; 95% CI 707.3–1,038) than did those who were positive by varATS qPCR only (13.7 parasites/µL; 95% CI 11.4–16.3) (p < 0.0001). No pfhrp2 deletions were observed. The high prevalence of asymptomatic and subpatent infections highlights the need for targeted strategies to reduce malaria in urban Côte d'Ivoire. The decomposition of an inert body seems to depend on the physiological, biological and physical characteristics of the corpse. The effect of these, especially of extra-biological mechanisms, on the rate of decomposition of the corpse does not seem to be sufficiently explored. The present work proposes to examine the influence of the type of feeding on the rate of cadaver decomposition in a human surrogate. It is based on a sample of four corpses of juvenile male pigs of the species Sus scrofa domesticus, three of which are experimental and one is a control aged 12 weeks and having a mass between 19 and 24 kg. The three experimental pigs were fed an energetic, construction and functional diet respectively. The control was fed a general diet. These different carcasses are exposed to the open air on four similar sites. The experiment is repeated twice, according to the protocol that guided the initial experiment conducted on comparable sites (eight cadavers, six experimental and two control). The measurement of the pigs' diet was done through a questionnaire. The mass of the decomposing carcass was explored by a specific tool, in this case, the weighing device. The results show that the rate of decomposition of the cadaver of pigs fed a general diet is higher than that of the cadavers of their counterparts fed construction, functional or energy diets. In West Africa, high deforestation rates and poaching have induced dramatic declines of mammal's populations and local extinctions. Due to their isolation, island species are more vulnerable than mainland species. The premises of that scenario are perceptible in the Ehotilé Islands National Park, south-eastern Côte d'Ivoire, but have not been documented. This study aimed to update the diversity and conservation status of medium and large mammals in that protected area. Several surveys were conducted between 2019 and 2021, using ethno-zoological interviews and individual surveys with local populations, as well as reconnaissance walks and camera trapping to collect data on the presence or absence of mammals. From interviews with local populations and literature review, a list of 27 species of mammals that were potentially present in the park in the past was established. Most "lost" species are large mammals, especially primates that are globally threatened. A total of 11 species were pictorially identified, including two Near threatened species (Aonyx capensis and Hydrictis maculicollis) and one Vulnerable species (Cercopithecus lowei). The study confirms a trend of population decline and the erosion of mammal diversity in the park, hence highlighting the need for urgent conservation actions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Malaria is still a major public health concern in Côte d'Ivoire despite mass distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) as a key preventive strategy. This study intended to evaluate the operational effectiveness of LLINs on the level of human-vector contact using 1 antibody-based biomarker of exposure to Anopheles in urban areas. Methods This cross-sectional study collected socio-demographic data and use of LLINs from 9 neighborhoods in the city of Bouaké (Côte d'Ivoire). Dry blood spots performed in children aged >6 months and adults were used to evaluate immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses to the Anopheles gSG6-P1 salivary peptide. Results IgG response levels to the salivary peptide were significantly lower in individuals who declared having "always" (n = 270) slept under an LLIN compared with those who had "often" (n = 2087) and "never" (n = 88) slept under an LLIN (P  < .0001). IgG response levels to gSG6-P1 between those who declared having "always" and "not always" slept under an LLIN varied according to neighborhood, socio-professional category, and age group. Conclusions The human IgG level to this gSG6-P1 salivary peptide could be a useful tool to evaluate the actual effectiveness of LLINs and help design behavioral change interventions that are crucial for sustaining universal coverage. Background: In malaria-endemic areas, human populations are frequently exposed to immunomodulatory salivary components injected during mosquito blood feeding. The consequences on pathogen-specific immune responses are not well known. This study evaluated and compared the humoral responses specific to merozoite stage vaccine candidates of Plasmodium falciparum, in children differentially exposed to Anopheles bites in a natural setting. Methods: The cross-sectional study was carried out in Bouaké (Côte d'Ivoire) where entomological data and blood samples from children (0–14 years) were collected in two sites with similar malaria prevalence. Antibody (IgG, IgG1, IgG3) responses to PfAMA1 and PfMSP1 were evaluated by ELISA. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to assess the relationship between the immune responses to P. falciparum antigens and exposure to Anopheles bites in the total cohort and in each site, separately. The individual level of exposure to Anopheles bites was evaluated by quantifying specific IgG response to the Anopheles gSG6-P1 salivary peptide, which represents a proxy of Anopheles exposure. Results: The anti-Plasmodium humoral responses were different according to the level of exposure of children, with those highly exposed to Anopheles presenting significantly lower antibody responses to PfMSP1 in total population (IgG and IgG3) and in Petessou village (IgG, IgG1, IgG3). No significant difference was seen for PfAMA1 antigen between children differently exposed to Anopheles. In Dar-es-Salam, a neighbourhood where a high Culex density was reported, children presented very low antibody levels specific to both antigens, and no difference according to the exposure to Anopheles bites was found. Conclusion: These findings may suggest that immunomodulatory components of Anopheles saliva, in addition to other factors, may participate to the modulation of the humoral response specific to Plasmodium merozoite stage antigens. This epidemiological observation may form a starting point for additional work to decipher the role of mosquito saliva on the modulation of the anti-Plasmodium acquired immunity and clinical protection in combining both field and ex vivo immunological studies. We provide evidence that a factor contributing to the specific patterns of deforestation in Côte d'Ivoire is the set of spatial units of management used to structure wood extraction. Timber harvests were organized through a system of harvest perimeters, called "chantier," for nearly a century. Chantiers were initiated as managerial instruments. However, their use as spatial tool for profit maximization led to positional anarchy. The lack of support for sustainable harvests from the legislation, the restoration system, and the tree-based policy governing the use of their content made the chantier the basis of a one-way resources extraction. Managerial scales facilitated clearing of forests. None served to regenerate forests. Using historical and official documents, satellite and cartographic data, we attempted to demonstrate how managerial scales aiming to organize logging have contributed to deforestation. We discuss the phases of fragmentation in the rainforest, the managerial scales, and the environmental context in which they were applied. We summarize the legislation that governed the managerial scales and how these scales organized space but the tree species-based policies and activities resulted in the forest's dilapidation. Background Many countries in Africa have lacked sentinel surveillance systems for influenza and are under-represented in data used for global vaccine strain selection. Objectives We describe 8 years of sentinel surveillance data and the contribution of influenza and other viruses to medically attended influenza-like illness (ILI) in Côte d'Ivoire. Methods Sentinel surveillance was established in 2003. Nasopharyngeal (NP) specimens and epidemiologic data are collected from persons of all ages presenting with ILI at sentinel sites. Respiratory specimens have been tested for influenza using various viral and molecular diagnostic methods. A subset of 470 specimens collected from children aged 0-5 years were tested for multiple respiratory viruses using RT-PCR. Results From 2003 to 2010, 5074 NP specimens were collected from patients with ILI. Overall, 969/5074 (19%) of these specimens tested positive for influenza. Seasonal influenza A(H1N1) viruses predominated during 5 years and influenza A(H3N2) viruses predominated during 3 years. Influenza B viruses cocirculated with influenza A viruses during each year from 2004 to 2010. Seasonal peaks in influenza circulation were observed during the months of May, June, and October, with the largest peak corresponding with the primary rainfall season. Of 470 specimens collected from children under aged 5 who were tested for multiple respiratory viruses, a viral respiratory pathogen was detected in 401/470 (85%) of specimens. Commonly detected viruses were RSV (113 of 470 specimens, 24%), rhinoviruses (85/470, 18%), influenza (77/470, 16%), and parainfluenza (75/470, 16%). Background: Large HIV care programs frequently subsidize antiretroviral (ARV) drugs and CD4 tests, but patients must often pay for other health-related drugs and services. We estimated the financial burden of health care for households with HIVinfected adults taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Côte d'Ivoire. Methodology/Principal Findings: We conducted a cross-sectional survey. After obtaining informed consent, we interviewed HIV-infected adults taking ART who had consecutively attended one of 18 HIV care facilities in Abidjan. We collected information on socioeconomic and medical characteristics. The main economic indicators were household capacity-to-pay (overall expenses minus food expenses), and health care expenditures. The primary outcome was the percentage of households confronted with catastrophic health expenditures (health expenditures were defined as catastrophic if they were greater than or equal to 40% of the capacity-to-pay). We recruited 1,190 adults. Median CD4 count was 187/mm³, median time on ART was 14 months, and 72% of subjects were women. Mean household capacity-to-pay was $213.7/month, mean health expenditures were $24.3/month, and 12.3% of households faced catastrophic health expenditures. Of the health expenditures, 75.3% were for the study subject (ARV drugs and CD4 tests, 24.6%; morbidity events diagnosis and treatment, 50.1%; transportation to HIV care centres, 25.3%) and 24.7% were for other household members. When we stratified by most recent CD4 count, morbidity events related expenses were significantly lower when subjects had higher CD4 counts. Conclusions/Significance: Many households in CÄte d'Ivoire face catastrophic health expenditures that are not attributable to ARV drugs or routine follow-up tests. Background: In some African cities, urban malaria is a threat to the health and welfare of city dwellers. To improve the control of the disease, it is critical to identify neighbourhoods where the risk of malaria transmission is the highest. This study aims to evaluate the heterogeneity of malaria transmission risk in one city (Bouaké) in a West African country (Côte d'Ivoire) that presents several levels of urbanization. Methods: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted in three neighbourhoods (Dar-es-Salam, Kennedy and N'gattakro) in Bouaké during both the rainy and dry seasons. Data on insecticide-treated net (ITN) use and blood samples were collected from children aged between 6 months and 15 years to determine the parasite density and the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum and the level of IgG against the Anopheles gSG6-P1 salivary peptide, used as the biomarker of Anopheles bite exposure. Results: The specific IgG levels to the gSG6-P1 salivary peptide in the rainy season were significantly higher compared to the dry season in all neighbourhoods studied (all p < 0.001). Interestingly, these specific IgG levels did not differ between neighbourhoods during the rainy season, whereas significant differences in IgG level were observed in the dry season (p = 0.034). ITN use could be a major factor of variation in the specific IgG level. Nevertheless, no difference in specific IgG levels to the gSG6-P1 salivary peptide was observed between children who declared "always" versus "never" sleeping under an ITN in each neighbourhood. In addition, the prevalence of P. falciparum in the whole population and immune responders was significantly different between neighbourhoods in each season (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: This study highlights the high risk of malaria exposure in African urban settings and the high heterogeneity of child exposure to the Anopheles vector between neighbourhoods in the same city. En Côte d'Ivoire la drépanocytose affecte 14 % de la population. Elle est responsable d'une morbidité et d'une mortalité importantes. La transfusion élément non négligeable de la prise en charge des drépanocytaires majeure qui les expose à l'hémochromatose post-transfusionnelle. Le diagnostic biologique repose sur le dosage du fer sérique et du coefficient de saturation de la transferrine (CST). La détermination du CST n'étant pas disponible dans notre contexte d'exercice, nous avons dosé uniquement la ferritinémie. L'intérêt du présent travail réside dans l'implication thérapeutique liée à l'identification des patients à risque d'hémochromatose car les chélateurs sont difficilement accessibles pour la plupart des patients. Étude prospective, descriptive et analytique portant sur les drépanocytaires polytransfusés suivis à l'unité thérapeutique transfusionnelle (UTT) du CNTS d'Abidjan de 2010 à 2018. Nous avons inclus 78 drépanocytaires, de tout âge et de tout sexe ayant bénéficié au moins dix transfusions. Le dosage de la ferritinémie a été effectué par ELISA. L'échange transfusionnel avec 59 % mode le plus utilisé. Ferritinémie moyenne 1719,19 ng/ml. L'hyperferritinémie chez 63 % des patients. La plupart des patients était en programme transfusionnel au long cours avec une moyenne de 27,5 culots de globules rouges. Trente deux patients avaient reçu au moins 20 culots CGR. Vingt et un patients ont été traités. 3 avec la déféroxamine et 18 traités au déférasirox oral. Nous avons identifié 33 drépanocytaires à risque d'hémochromatose. Les déterminants du risque d'hémochromatose étaient le nombre et le mode de transfusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
