INFORMATION technology , *COVID-19 pandemic , *INFORMATION & communication technologies , *COMMUNICATIVE competence , *VIRTUAL reality , *OLDER people , *SOCIAL networks - Abstract
Goal. The aim of this paper is to determine the attitudes and opinions of the members of the Pensioners' Club of the city of Osijek after the education was carried out with the aim of training them in information and communication skills. Methodology. The paper presents the results of the research conducted through interviews and focus groups among retirees, the members of the Osijek Retirees' Club. The research examined the attitudes and opinions of 10 pensioners on the topic of education in terms of information and communication technologies during March 2022 using the interview method. After the interviews, the attitudes and opinions of the retirees related to the use of technology were examined in a focus group (1) in which 9 retirees participated (some of whom attended the education, some of whom did not). Finally, a focus group (2) in which 4 retirees participated examined their attitudes and opinions about virtual reality. The respondents wore VR glasses and observed the history of Osijek in the period from 1920 to 2020 by decades. More specifically, they observed how objects, houses, newspapers, furniture and similar things covered in the mentioned period looked. The paper presents the attitudes and opinions of the participants of the workshops, and is a continuation of the previous research, conducted before this training (Jakopec, Selthofer and Hocenski, 2022). Results. The results of the conducted interviews and focus groups indicate that the majority of retirees share the desire for learning and acquiring additional IT knowledge. They own at least one device (mostly a desktop computer or a smartphone) through which they visit social networks, search for necessary information and read the daily news. The respondents who participated in the research believe that they need more similar workshops in order to establish and expand their existing knowledge. After the workshops, the pensioners stated that they are fully aware of the advantages that IT knowledge brings them, and they relate this knowledge to the use of technology during the COVID-19 pandemic, when physically going to certain places (for example, to the doctor) was not possible. The results of the second focus group in which 3D reality was observed using VR glasses have shown that the respondents were not previously familiar with the concepts of virtual reality. According to the participants, the workshop lasted too short, they felt disoriented, and the glasses did not impress them too much. They also pointed out that they wore them for too short a time to highlight something as an advantage, they did not remember much of the presented content, but they found it interesting. Most of them stated that they would like to repeat the experience, but with better instructions and extended time of wearing glasses. Limitations. The research sample is limited to a specific subgroup of the retired members of the Club, and is therefore not representative of the entire population of retired people in the city of Osijek and in the Republic of Croatia. Value. The results of the research indicate the attitudes and opinions of people of the third age towards education in the field of information and communication technologies and virtual reality. The results of the research contribute to the implementation of the "Active pension" project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMUNITY health workers , *MEDICAL personnel , *PERSONAL protective equipment , *MEDICAL education , *COVID-19 , *PANDEMICS - Abstract
The danger of the COVID-19 infectious disease epidemic was declared by the Ministry of Health in March 2020 for the entire territory of Croatia. Working in healthcare during the pandemic has put healthcare workers at increased stress and risk of infection. Healthcare workers must use additional personal protective equipment (PPE) during a pandemic to protect themselves from infection. The aim of the research was to find out the attitudes of health care workers in primary health care about the need for additional education on the proper use of personal protective equipment. The survey was conducted from October 2020 to January 2021. Responses were collected through an online questionnaire. Notice of the study was sent to healthcare professionals by e-mail through healthcare professional societies. The questionnaire was completed by 184 health professionals. The largest group of subjects were physicians (N = 146; 79.3%). Additional jobs due to COVID-19 disease were performed by 110 (59.8%) respondents. Additional tasks included work on triage, on-call duty at COVID dispensaries, swabbing, examination of patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test, telephone on-call and patient information, and taking an epidemiological history as well as imposing self-isolation measures. Only 71 respondents (38.6%) had education on personal protective equipment during training for their current occupation, of which 27 answered that this acquired knowledge was enough for them to work safely during the epidemic. The majority of respondents (90%) believe that they need additional education on personal protective equipment. Based on the results, it can be concluded that education is needed both during regular education and through continuous medical education through professional societies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OCCUPATIONAL diseases , *REPORTING of diseases , *CHEMOPREVENTION , *CROATS , *MALARIA , *MIGRANT labor - Abstract
In Croatia, malaria was eradicated in 1964 and has since been imported, ten cases a year in average, mostly by Croatian migrant workers, seafarers in particular. About 80 % of registered cases were infected in Africa and the main reason for infection was negligence in the use of chemoprophylaxis. The aim of the study was to establish the incidence of malaria among Croatian seafarers from 2004 to 2014, how many of them took chemoprophylaxis properly, and whether malaria was acknowledged as occupational disease. To get our answers we analysed epidemiological surveys of the Croatian Institute of Public Health completed by patients and reviewed epidemiological bulletins and the national Register of Occupational Diseases. Over the investigated period, a total of 102 people fell ill with malaria, of whom 25 were seafarers. Seventeen did not take chemoprophylaxis at all and eight took them without following instructions. In addition, none of them had malaria recognised as occupational disease under Croatian law, nor is there any information that they exercised their rights in any other way. All this clearly points out that seafarers and their employers need to be informed much better about the benefits of preventive measures and their labour rights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

QUALITY of life , *PARENTING education , *PEDIATRIC therapy , *GENETIC disorders , *NURSING education , *NEONATAL nursing - Abstract
Haemophilia is rare, inherited disorder with incidence of 2-5 new new-born boys per year in Croatia. Haemophilia is treated principally with intravenous factor VIII/IX concentrates. The education of parents and children is the basis of disease control. The nurses education process begins with the first hospitalization of a child due to newly discovered haemophilia. Education continues on a permanent basis, adapts to the age of the child and changes as the child grows up. In addition to training on daily care it is of great importance to improve the emotional adaptation of the whole family to the newly discovered disease. Parents are expected to have an active approach, day-to-day self-assessment and decision-making. The result of a quality approach of a nurse to a child and their family is a well-educated parent and child, strong motivation and excellent communication with the team. A nurse as a member of a health team and as an educator plays a significant role in treating the disease because the way the parents and the child deal with the disease depends on their education about the disease and therefore influences the quality of their life. The most important outcome of pediatric care is improving the health of the child. In order to provide the child with the best possible heath care, it is essential that parents are involved in the treatment process. With continued education and good disease control, children with haemophilia can grow as actively and carelessly as their peers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

QUALITY of life ,NURSING students ,GRADUATE nursing education ,NURSES ,EDUCATIONAL attainment - Abstract
Objective: The objective was to assess the quality of life (QoL) of graduate nursing students enrolled in the University of Zagreb, School of Medicine, and evaluate the relationship between QoL and marital status, age group and work setting. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2012--2013 among 154 nursing professionals/technicians from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, Croatia, using the WHOQOL-BREF Questionnaire. Results: The majority of the participants (88.3%) were female, with a median age of 39.0 years (interquartile range, IQR = 31.1--45.2). More than 90% of the participants had already completed university studies. Marital status, age group, or work setting made no significant impact on the scoring of the four QoL domains (physical, psychological, environmental, and social relationships). Significantly lower median values in the psychological domain were noted in the group between 25 and 45 years of age (p = 0.010). Conclusion: Perceptions of QoL might be directly related to the educational levels of the participants since according to the latest knowledge, nurses who are university-educated have better work ability. Providing educational and career prospects can contribute to decreasing nurses' occupational stress levels and increasing their work ability. Other determinants of QoL not addressed in this paper should be investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last decade, a growing body of research has dealt with the effects of cyberbullying on mental health of children and youth, and the results have systematically shown that cyberbullying is on the rise and that the mental health consequences are negative for both victims and perpetrators. Effective prevention programs for cyberbullying targeting children, youth, professionals, parents, and all those involved in upbringing are being developed and evaluated in the world, Europe and Croatia. Common features of implementing successful prevention programs that most authors agree on are the education of students, teachers, professional assistants and parents, their collaboration, the use of quality interactive educational content and knowledge of following protocols for schools in cases of electronic violence. CLINICAL chemistry , *CLINICAL pathology , *BIOCHEMISTRY , *BLOOD testing , *DISCIPLINE of medical personnel , *MEDICAL specialties & specialists - Abstract
Heterogeneity exists across Europe in the definition of the profession of clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine and also in academic background of specialists in this discipline. This article provides an overview of the standards of education and training of laboratory professionals and quality regulations in Croatia. Clinical chemistry in Croatia is almost exclusively practiced by medical biochemists. Although term Medical biochemist often relates to medical doctors in other European countries, in Croatia medical biochemists are not medical doctors, but university degree professionals who are qualified scientifically. Practicing the medical biochemistry is regulated by The Health Care Law, The Law of the Medical Biochemistry Profession and The Law of the State and Private Health Insurance. According to the law, only medical biochemists are entitled to run and work in the medical biochemistry laboratory. University degree is earned after the 5 years of the studies. Register for medical biochemists is kept by the Croatian Chamber of Medical Biochemists. Licensing is mandatory, valid for 6 years and regulated by the government (Law on the Health Care, 1993). Vocational training for medical biochemists lasts 44 months and is regulated by the national regulatory document issued by the Ministry of Health. Accreditation is not mandatory and is provided by an independent, non-commercial national accreditation body. The profession has interdisciplinary character and a level of required competence and skills comparable to other European countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
