With the objective of determining the influence that exercises the flooding of the soil in some physical properties of a soil vertisoil of the Valley of the Cauto River in the Granma province, in which sugar cane it is cultivated. They left that Cuba is located in soils with bad drainage, affecting 40,3 % of the cultivated agricultural area. It was considered the factor witnesses-flooding absence in parcels, subdivided in 30 parcels of 48 m², to facilitate the taking of replied samples. They were carried out two samplings one to the beginning of the experiment and the other one to the five months, once concluded the flooding. The values averages of the apparent density, total porosity and airing porosity with their errors standard were represented graphically by means of bars, while they were discriminated against statistically with the employment of the test student t, concluding that the excess of water in the soil increases the apparent density and maked descend the total porosity significantly and of airing, affecting the physical fertility of these solis. The study was carried out in Holguín, Cuba, on a brown soil without carbonate, in plantations during the month of January, in three times of cold and with crops made to the 12 months of age. Twelve hybrid coming from the Institute of Investigations in Tropical Viandas (INIVIT), were evaluated. They were carried out the following evaluations: number of shafts for plants in the moment of the crop, number of commercial roots for plant, longitude of the commercial tuberous roots, commercial yield and evaluation of the culinary quality. The genotype I-Y-93-4 was that of more commercial yield, overcoming the witness. The selection approaches that prevailed were those of yield, time of cooking and culinary quality of the root. In Cuba, there is a low availability of promising banana and plantain cultivars with similar or better characteristics than commercial varieties. Monitoring of genetic variability in this crop through morphological markers is useful to detect the genetic diversity. 34 plantain genotypes from the Cuban gene center and 5 others obtained from different breeding methods were characterized to determine the present genetic variability and their agronomic performance, so as, to include them in future breeding programs. The 50 minimal morphological characters were evaluated, and 39 of them were processed due to the differences between genotypes. The most important variables were determined and marked differences were found between cultivars from mutagenesis and somaclonal variation and original clones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
