Objectives: Antidepressant drugs are used frequently during pregnancy. The risk assessment of SSRI exposure is still evaluated and re-opened due to studies indicating possible increase of inborn defects, neonatal abstinence syndrome and cognitive ability or behavioral defects., Methods: In our study, we prospectively followed groups of pregnancies in years 2002-2009, that were exposed to SSRI. As control group we used 1) women exposed to new atypical antidepressant and anti-psychotics - APD (risperidone, mirtazapine, venlafaxine, trazodone, aripiprazole, ziprasidone, olanzapine), 2) women exposed to nonteratogenic drugs and 3) the general population according to Institute of Health Informations and Statistics (ÚZIS.) Data were analyzed using software Statistica for Windows No.5.5., Results: The total number of queries on psychotropic drugs performs in CZTIS more than 30% of all calls, constantly. We enrolled a total of 43 women exposed to SSRI and 37 women (1x twins) exposed to new psychotropic drugs (APD) in the study. Exposure to SSRI was often associated with poly-therapy. The most frequent SSRI used were citalopram and/or escitalopram (56%), and setraline (26%). Other SSRI were used sporadically. We observed significantly higher frequency of elective terminations in group of SSRI and higher frequency of abortions a prematurity in APD group. Frequency of malformations does not varied, being in all groups in expected range., Conclusions: We confirmed that SSRI exposure during pregnancy was not associated with the higher risk of major malformation. However, number of cases was low and did not allow the statistical treatment with higher power.

Aim of Study: An analysis of the efficiency of prenatal diagnostic of selected birth defects in the Czech Republic and its dynamics in past 30 years according to birth defect type and prenatal diagnostic methods., Type of Study: Retrospective epidemiological analysis of selected birth defects, prenatal diagnostics efficiency., Material and Methods: Data from the National Birth Defect Register (Institute for Health Information and Statistics) in the Czech Republic in the 1975 - 2005 period were used along with data on prenatally diagnosed and terminated pregnancies from the same period. Mean prenatal diagnostic efficiency values of selected types of defects were analyzed in 5-year periods and minimal/maximal values were assessed., Results: During 1975 - 2005 period, totally 3,935,209 children were born, out of which 83,970 were with a birth defect. Mean incidence was 213.38 per 10,000 live births (with the highest value of 414.58 in 2003). In 1985 - 2005, 7,398 cases of prenatally detected birth defects (resulting in pregnancy terminations) were registered, which made (in relative numbers) a span from 4.9 defects per 10,000 live births in 1985 to 65.2 per 10,000 live births in the year 2005. During this period, an important increase of diagnostics of prenatally detectable defects occurred., Conclusions: The study gives results of relative efficiency of prenatal diagnostics of particular birth defects. The highest efficiency was in anencephaly and encephalocele (100%), the other defects showed the following numbers: spina bifida 81%, congenital hydrocephalus 67%, omfalocele 67%, gastroschisis 92%, cystic kidney 59%, renal agenesis 50%, diaphragmatic hernia 35% and Down syndrome 74%.

Objective: An analysis of prenatal diagnostics of birth defects in the Czech Republic in 2004 and a comparison to data from 1996 - 2003., Type of Study: A retrospective analysis of data from a Register of Prenatal Diagnostics of the Czech Republic., Methodology: Data on birth defects in the Czech Republic from particular departments of medical genetics and prenatal diagnostics from 1996 to 2004 time period was used. An analysis of data on prenatal diagnostics of selected type of birth defects was performed., Results: During 1996 to 2004 period, a total of 4,126 prenatally diagnosed and terminated cases were reported. In 2004, 597 cases were reported, which presents 61.1 cases per 10 000 live births. (The mean rate from the total period under the study was 49.8 per 10 000 live births.), Conclusions: Current data on birth defects in a 9-year period in the Czech Republic are presented. The role of prenatal diagnostics in decrease of some severe types of birth defects is underlined.

The authors present data on the incidence of birth defects in liveborn infants up to the age of one year and the results of prenatal diagnosis of birth defects in the CR in 1997 and a brief comparison with the previous period 1992-1996. In the first part the authors present data on birth defects as whole, in the second part they present a comparison of the incidence of selected types of birth defects in 1997 with mean rates during the period 1961-1990. In the third part the comparison of results of prenatal diagnosis in the CR in 1997 is confronted with the period from 1992-1996.
