The article provides information on the Hawken-Spencer rifle created by gunsmith J. Philip Gemmer in Denver, Colorado. The rifle is a single-shot muzzle-loading percussion plains rifle and considered to be an exception to the prejudice against hybrid weapons. He adopted the rifle concepts of gunsmiths William S. Hawken and Christopher Spencer in creating the hybrid armament.
