Context: Adequate knowledge about nutritional status of a community is necessary to have a comprehensive idea about its development process, as under-nutrition is one of the major health problems in developing countries. As an individual's height and weight can be readily and inexpensively measured, body mass index (BMI) has become a popular heuristic approximation for body fatness in epidemiology and clinical practice. The BMI is the most common surrogate measure of obesity as well as nutritional assessment for individual. For this reasons an attempt has been taken to assess the nutritional status through the body mass index (BMI) among first year students of MBBS and B sc nursing course of government medical education institutes in Dhaka. Material and Methods: This descriptive type of analytic study was conducted in the Anatomy Department of Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The study sample was 177 individuals of first year students of MBBS and B.Sc nursing course admitted in the session of 2017-2018 in the Dhaka Medical College & Dhaka Nursing College, Dhaka. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated as student's weight in kilograms divided by the square of the student's height in meters (kg/m²). The warning sign of poor nutritional health was calculated according to the checklist adapted by the Nutrition Screening Initiative, American Academy of Family Physicians July 2001. With the help of statistical software SPSS-20 comparisons between the two groups were done. Result: The mean (±SD) height (meter), weight (kg) and BMI of groups MBBS and B Sc nursing were 1.63±0.09, 61.65±11.22, 23.11±3.53 and 1.56±0.07, 49.05±9.42, 20.15±3.47 respectively. Good nutritional health status was found 61.80% in MBBS and 53.30% in B Sc nursing groups. Conclusion: The present study showed that the BMI of first year students of MBBS course is higher than first year students of B Sc nursing course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The presence of ischemic ECG changes on admission has been shown to predict outcome, the relationship between the extent of ECG changes and the risk of cardiac events is still ill defined. The severity of ST-segment depression on admission ECG has a strong association with adverse in-hospital outcome in patients with non ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome. The study was done to observe the extent of ST-segment depression and in-hospital outcome in patients with non ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome. Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Cardiology in NICVD Dhaka, from January 2006 to December 2007. Considering inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 183 patients were evaluated. All the patients were evaluated clinically after admission. ECG, blood biochemistry and echocardiography were done. Patients were categorized into three groups according to the extent of ST- segment depression. Results: In this study, analysis of the baseline parameters revealed no statistically significant difference among the three groups of patients (p>0.05). Mean sum of the ST-segment depression analysis was done and all mean values were more in group III patients. 41.0% patients developed complications during the study period. Acute LVF (22.9%) was the most common complication followed by arrhythmia (11.5%), cardiogenic shock (4.4%) and STEMI (2.2%). All the complications were more in group III patients. During this period 6% patients died and more death (12.3%) was observed in group III patients. Conclusion: The amount of ST-segment depression is a powerful predictor of adverse in-hospital outcome in patients with non ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Outbreaks of scabies in institutions and the socioeconomic consequences have not been reported from overpopulated countries such as Bangladesh. Study design: A community-based study among children from six residential Islamic education institutes (madrashas) in Dhaka. Multistage random sampling was used. Objectives: To study the socio-economic profile, water-sanitation facilities, personal hygiene and living conditions of these children. Methodology: Direct interviews were used to collect the data and clinical check up was performed in all children. Results: In total, 492 children received clinical check-ups; 92.5% were boys (mean age: 11.2_+ 2.4 years). 63.4% of fathers and 98.5% of mothers were either illiterate or had only received primary education, 55.1% of fathers were in tow-paid labouring jobs, and 99% of mothers were housewives. Of the 98% of children who had scabies, 71% had been re-infected (96% during the winter). Randomly assigned anti-scabies drugs revealed an average cure rate of 85.5%. Seventy-four percent of children were living in poorly ventilated buildings with overcrowded steeping arrangements. They had poor personal hygiene: 21% shared towels; 8% shared undergarments; 30% shared bed linen; and 81% kept their used clothes on a communal line or shelf. Sanitation was also poor: 39% bathed infrequently, although 97% carried out mandatory ablution. Most children (61%) washed their clothes (including undergarments) two or three times a fortnight, 35% did so every 2-3 days, and 3.7% washed their clothes on alternative days. Disease severity and re-infection were associated with infrequent washing of clothes (P<0.001) and bed linen (P<0.001), overcrowded sleeping arrangements (P<0.001) and infrequent bathing (P<0.001) with soap (P<0.001). This was further related to household income (P<0.001 for both). Conclusion: The study findings have potentially dangerous implications for public health. Immediate attention should be given to developing a sustainable tong-term intervention programme to combat scabies hyperendemicity, and to save thousands of children from impending complications.
