Given their conditions to reside in and intensify longer over warm oceans, tropical cyclones (TCs) in the western North Pacific (WNP) present a stronger lifetime maximum intensity during El Niño than during La Niña. By using observational data, we found that the anomalously cool sea surface temperature (SST)s in the basin act as effective barriers against intense TCs approaching East Asia during El Niño, weakening their destructiveness at landfall. Based on our high-resolution pseudo-global-warming simulations, the basin-wide 2K SST warming within the WNP basin can, however, shatter this cool SST barrier, exposing East Asia to more destructive TCs during El Niño, compared to those during La Niña. Considering that the 2K warmer WNP will likely occur in the mid-21st century under a high emission scenario and in the late 21st century under a moderate emission scenario, our findings support that more aggressive efforts of global warming mitigation are needed. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the Sino-Korean Craton (SKC) and the Gondwana supercontinent is crucial for accurate reconstruction of the tectonic evolution and early Paleozoic paleogeography of East Asia. To explore the link between the SKC and peri-Gondwana, we provide new detrital zircon U–Pb age data from litho- and bio-stratigraphically constrained lower Cambrian to Lower Ordovician sandstone deposits from the eastern margin of the SKC (Taebaeksan Basin). Results indicate that the two distinct age spectra of detrital zircon resulted from provenance change combined with a strong function of sediment grain size within host siliciclastic rocks of the Taebaek Group. The age spectra from coarse-grained sandstones display Paleoproterozoic (1.9 Ga) and Neoarchean (~ 2.5 Ga) peaks, indicating that the sediments were supplied from the basement rocks of the SKC. Conversely, age spectra from fine-grained siliciclastics contain late Mesoproterozoic (~ 1.0 Ga) and Neoproterozoic (~ 0.6 Ga) peaks, with or without a Paleoproterozoic signal, consistent with a Gondwanan sediment origin. These different age populations have been documented in multiple Cambrian and Ordovician sequences of the SKC and are consistently well correlated with sediment grain size. Coarse-grained sediments, sourced primarily from local basement rocks, were deposited in coastal, nearshore, and shelf environments, whereas fine-grained sediments were derived from more distal sources (i.e., the Gondwana mainland and/or the Gyeonggi Marginal Belt) and deposited in inner to outer shelf settings. Therefore, the repeated occurrence of sediment with two distinct provenances in the Cambrian–Ordovician siliciclastics of the SKC is likely a result of provenance shift integrated with changing depositional environments in an epeiric platform. This yielded variations in sediment grain size and source rock provenance, with and/or without a tectonic activity. • Spatial variation of meiofauna assemblage prevailed somehow masking seasonal fluctuations. • Sediments properties were key environmental factors that determine meiofauna assemblages. • Anthropogenic pressures significantly influenced diversity and composition of meiofauna taxa. • Hypoxia directly influenced drastic community collapse on both macrofauna and meiofauna. • Benthic communities varied in response time and sensitivity to environmental stresses/gradients. The present study investigated the spatiotemporal distributions of meiofauna and corresponding environmental variables in two different subtidal environments. The two habitats represent unique geographical localities; (1) Jinhae Bay for semi-enclosed industrial bay (under anthropogenic pressure) and (2) Samcheok coast for open sea area (rather in natural condition) in Korea. Biotic and abiotic data were seasonally collected from six monitoring stations in each area for 3 years (2013–16) at two study areas and all the data were comparatively analyzed. First, abiotic data such as sediment properties and water quality parameters showed significant variations in time (season/year) and space (site/area) cross the study areas and within sites in each area. Second, meiofauna assemblages, such as number of taxa, abundance, and composition, greatly varied between seasons and localities, reflecting (in)direct association(s) to local activities and/or environmental gradients. Of note, the Jinhae Bay community was directly influenced by a hypoxia during summer season. In general, the site-specific variations rather prevailed masking seasonal fluctuations, indicating significance of both oceanographic settings and terrestrial land use activities. Among the environmental parameters measured, sediment grain size appeared to be the key factor in determining the meiofaunal assemblages and distributions, particularly under natural condition shown at Samcheok. Altogether, clear separations in meiofaunal community cross sites (inner vs. outer stations) and areas (enclosed industrial bay vs. open sea) implied anthropogenic pressures and certain impacted boundaries. In addition, association of benthic communities to anthropogenic environments seemed to prevail in macrofaunal community, being simultaneously influenced by abiotic seasonal fluctuations. Overall, two contrasting nearshore habitats exhibited typical spatiotemporal distributions of subtidal benthic communities being collectively influenced by anthropogenic stresses and site-specific environmental gradients.
