The article presents a study that deals with olfactory receptor (OR) genes in East Asian loaches. The authors investigated the divergence and evolutionary changes in OR genes in two loach OR gene families, D1/3 and D32 from Taiwanese and Chinese populations of 2 species, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Paramisgurnus dabryanus. Based on their findings, the authors highlighted the advantages of gaining extra copies of OR genes for adapting to local environments. Information was also given on the dynamic changes in OR gene number and the possible explanation for a lower OR gene number in fish.
