Deletion polymorphism of BCL-2-like protein 11 (BIM) is specifically found in East Asia. To explain some epidemiological discrepancies between Asian and Western countries, we analyzed a silent single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in exon 5 (c465C > T) and a deletion site (2903 bp) in intron 2 in 77 patients with follicular lymphoma by the Q-invader method using PCR. In females, 5-year progression-free survivals (PFS) were 20.0% in the BIM deletion group, 66.7% in the SNP group and 81.5% in the wild-type (WT) group (p =.0012). In the WT group, 5-year PFS was 40.4% in males (p =.0448 vs. female PFS). This tendency was strengthened in patients receiving rituximab (26.9% vs. 84.2%, p =.006). Superior PFS in the WT females in Japan was comparable with the results of cohort studies in the United States and Sweden. Abstract: Three-dimensional shear wave speed structure of the upper mantle beneath the Japanese Islands and the surrounding regions is constructed from the measurements of inter-station phase speeds of surface waves. We employ the dense broad-band seismic network (F-net), deployed throughout Japan, as well as permanent stations of global seismic network in East Asia. A temporary broad-band seismic network in Far-East Russia, which has been constructed as a part of the Stagnant Slab Project since 2004, is also used in combination with the permanent stations. Using seismic events from 2005 to 2007 with moment magnitude greater than 6.0 and depth shallower than 100km, we measure the phase speeds of the fundamental-mode Rayleigh and Love waves, working with the conventional two-station technique. Phase speed maps of the Japanese Islands and the Sea of Japan are obtained from the inversions of inter-station phase speeds that are measured for a large number of station-pairs. We have collected over 5300 paths for Rayleigh waves and 3800 paths for Love waves. The phase speed maps of Rayleigh waves, in the period range from 25 to 140s, are inverted to obtain an isotropic 3D shear wave speed model in the depth range from 40 to 200km. The isotropic S wave model represents prominent fast wave speed anomalies in northeastern Japan, associated with the subducting Pacific Plate. Fast anomalies of the lithosphere beneath the Sea of Japan are also imaged, implying that the average thickness of lithosphere beneath the Yamato Rise and Japan Basin is about km. Immediately below this oceanic lithosphere, slow anomalies are found in the asthenosphere beneath the entire region of the Sea of Japan in the depth down to about 200km. In southwestern Japan, the low-angle subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate is mapped clearly, indicating that the northern end of the plate extends beyond the northern coast of the Chugoku region, reaching beneath the Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan. A strong low velocity anomaly off the west coast of Kyushu is found in the depth down to about 130km, which supports the existence of an upwelling flow beneath this area. We also invert the phase speed maps of Rayleigh and Love waves in the period range from 30 to 80s simultaneously, to construct the radially anisotropic shear wave speed model. A remarkable anisotropy with SH>SV is found in the mantle wedge beneath northeastern Japan, while only weak anisotropy is seen beneath the Sea of Japan. Such anisotropic properties, which cannot readily be obtained from body wave studies only, will be an important key to understanding the dynamic processes in this tectonically actively region. We conducted the first study to determine fracture incidence in institutionalized elderly people in East Asia. Fracture incidence was generally higher than in the general population but was not for all fracture types. Specific fracture prevention strategies for institutionalized people are needed. Ethnic differences in fracture incidence are also discussed. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of fractures in nursing homes in Japan, where fracture is becoming an increasingly problematic health issue. We conducted a cohort study with a 1-year follow-up. Subjects were 8,905 residents (average age, 84.3 years) in nursing homes. Caregivers assessed activities of daily living levels using Barthel’s index, and we collected demographic data of each resident. Fracture diagnosis was based on medical records from the hospitals where patients were admitted. Incidence of hip fracture was 14.9 per 1,000 person-years for women and 9.7 for men. Incidence of forearm and upper-arm fractures was 1.9 and 5.1 for women and 0.5 and 2.1 for men, respectively. Hip and upper-arm fracture rates were higher than in the general population, but forearm fracture rates were lower. Hazard ratio of fracture incidence in totally dependent to partially dependent or independent subjects was 0.14 (95%CI 0.05–0.33) for hip fracture and 0.34 (95%CI 0.23–0.50) for all fractures. Fracture incidence in institutionalized elderly people is generally higher but is not higher for all types of fractures than the general population. Several intercomparison exercises were organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the determination of operational quantities at the regional or interregional basis. In East Asia region, a third phase of the intercomparison finished in mid 2004. It was organised within the frame of the Regional Cooperation Agreement (RCA) as a follow-up to previous exercises carried out during 1990-1992 and 1995-1996. The results of this intercomparison for the determination of operational quantities were satisfactory for all Member States. The laboratories demonstrated a good performance in quantities tested. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the RCA/IAEA intercomparison and the future of RCA activities in support of assessment of occupational exposure by organising intercomparison runs.
