SUMMARY The continued circulation of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) in Egypt, despite the use of various vaccines, is a serious problem that requires continuous detection of IBDV. In the current study, real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction testing of 100 diseased chicken flocks during 2017–2021 revealed the presence of very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) in 67% of the flocks, non-vvIBDV in 11%, and a mixture of both vvIBDV and non-vvIBDV in 4%. Twenty-nine IBDV isolates were submitted for partial sequencing of the viral protein 2 hypervariable region (VP2-HVR), and 27 isolates were confirmed to be genogroup A3 (vvIBDV) with 96.3%–98.5% similarity to the global A3 (vvIBDV) and 88.9%–97% similarity to genogroup A1 vaccine strains. The remaining two isolates were non-vvIBDV and showed 91.1% and 100% identity with classical genogroup A1 strains, respectively. Furthermore, the sequence and phylogenetic analysis of VP1 (amino acids 33–254) of two selected isolates of A3, 5/2017 and 98/2021, clustered them as B2, vvIBDV-like, strains with high similarity (99.5%) to four Egyptian, 99% to Chinese and European, and 97.7% to Chinese and Polish vvIBDV isolates. Experimental infection of commercial broiler chickens with two vvIBDV-A3B2 isolates (5/2017 and 98/2021) showed no mortality despite typical tissue lesions, clear histopathological changes, and strong ELISA antibody response. Isolate 98/2021 was more pathogenic, as confirmed by histopathology, whereas isolate 5/2017 induced a stronger serological response. In conclusion, vvIBDV (A3B2) strains with two amino acid (aa) substitutions in VP1 as V141I and V234I as well as VP2 as Y220F and G254S are still circulating in Egypt. RESUMEN Análisis de las secuencias genéticas y de la patogenicidad del virus de la enfermedad infecciosa de la bolsa de pollos en Egipto durante los años 2017–2021. La circulación continua del virus de la enfermedad infecciosa de la bolsa (IBDV) en Egipto, a pesar del uso de varias vacunas, continua siendo un problema serio que requiere la detección continua de este virus. En el presente estudio, se realizó una prueba de transcripción reversa y reacción en cadena de la polimerasa en tiempo real de 100 parvadas enfermas de pollos durante los años 2017–2021 y reveló la presencia de virus muy virulentos (vvIBDV) en el 67% de las parvadas, otros tipos diferentes a los muy virulentos en el 11%, y una mezcla de virus muy virulentos y otros tiposen un 4% de las parvadas. Se enviaron veintinueve aislados del virus de la enfermedad infecciosa de la bolsa para la secuenciación parcial de la región hipervariable de la proteína viral 2 (VP2-HVR), y se confirmó que 27 aislados pertenecían al genogrupo A3 (vvIBDV) con una similitud del 96.3% al 98.5% con el genogrupo A3 global (vvIBDV) y de 88.9% a 97% de similitud con las cepas vacunales del genogrupo A1. Los dos aislamientos restantes no resultaron ser muy virulentos y mostraron un 91.1% y un 100% de identidad con las cepas clásicas del genogrupo A1, respectivamente. Además, la secuencia y el análisis filogenético de la proteina VP1 (aminoácidos 33-254) de dos aislados seleccionados de genogrupo A3, 5/2017 y 98/2021, los agruparon como cepas B2, similares a virus muy virulentos, con alta similitud (99.5%) con cuatro aislamientos de Egipto, con similitud de 99% con aislados chinos y europeos, y de 97.7% con aislados muy virulentos chinos y polacos. La infección experimental de pollos de engorde comerciales con dos aislados muy virulentos tipo A3B2 (5/2017 y 98/2021) no mostró mortalidad a pesar de las lesiones tisulares típicas, los cambios histopatológicos claros y la fuerte respuesta de anticuerpos por ELISA. El aislado 98/2021 fue más patógeno, según lo confirmado por histopatología, mientras que el aislado 5/2017 indujo una respuesta serológica más fuerte. This study aimed to assess the influence of pollution on the quality of sediments and the risks associated with El-Qusier and Safaga Cities, Red Sea, Egypt, during 2021, divided into four sectors, using multiple pollution indices. To achieve that, we evaluated the metal pollution index (MPI), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), contamination security index (CSI), and anthropogenicity (Anp%). Moreover, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks are used for human health hazards. Results indicated that Mn and Fe recorded the highest concentrations, whereas Cd had the lowest. El-Quseir City sediments were found the following metal ions: Fe > Mn > Ni > Zn > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd, where the order in the Safaga City was: Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cd. MPI > 1, this is alarming in the study area due to heavy metal pollution. In addition, Cf < 1 in all metals except Cd with contamination degree CD ranged from low to considerable contamination in El-Qusier city. In contrast, contamination ranged from significant to very high in Safaga city. PLI < 1 is lower than the reference at all monitored stations. CSI values ranged from relatively low to moderate. Besides Cd, data reflect each element's low environmental danger (EriMe40). This study's risk index (RI) is low to moderate in Sector 1 and high to extremely high in Sector 2. HQ and HI index < 1 means it is safe for human health in order: HI ingestion > HI dermal. CSR for different pathways was recorded as dermal > ingestion, in which total CSR for all paths is considered harmful, and the cancer risk is troublesome and higher than the reference ranges of 1 × 10–6–1 × 10–4. Lake Qaroun, one of Egypt’s largest lakes, is a remnant of a much larger one; it is considered as a closed basin used as a general reservoir for agricultural wastewater drainage in El-Fayoum Province. Furthermore, the lake receives agricultural and partially treated sewage water from the El-Fayoum Governorate as well as fish farm drainage. The current study assessed the changes in physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal levels (Zn, Pb, Cd, and Cu) in water and sediment, as well as the bioaccumulation of these heavy metals in Mugilcephalus fish samples obtained from Lake Qaroun. Thus, information on histopathological changes in the gills, liver, kidney, end of the alimentary canal, and muscles was provided. This research was conducted in three different locations along Lake Qaroun (Eastern, southeastern, and western). This study confirms an increased heavy metal pollution in the eastern and southeastern sectors of Lake Qaroun, facing the drain outlet, as a result of the discharge of drainage water effluents without prior treatment, which directly affects water quality and fish health, and subsequently human health. The concentrations of Pb and Cd in the water exceeded the allowable limits. The gills are the target organ for Cd in Mugil cephalus, but Pb and Zn are preferentially collected in the kidneys, with the liver containing the highest concentrations of Cu ions. Histopathological changes with an evident damage were visible in the gills, liver, and kidneys of Mugil cephalus taken from the lake’s eastern and southeastern areas. In addition, blood parameters of Mugil cephalus collected from various study sites throughout Lake Qaroun were included in this study. A highly significant decrease was detected in red blood cell counts, hemoglobin content, and hematocrit values of fish collected from the lake's eastern and southeastern parts in comparison to fish collected from the western sector, indicating more or less normal values. The Suez Gulf is the most critical commerce corridor connecting the Middle East to the rest of the world due to its unique geographic location. Furthermore, it has an economic significance as a fishing and touristic area. These maritime activities have a detrimental effect on marine environments and are responsible for transmitting several harmful substances into the ocean. Therefore, assessing the degree of metal contamination in water and sediments at selected locations along the Suez Gulf from Port Tawfiq to Ras-Gharib is the main objective of this study. According to annual averages, an ecological risk assessment based on seawater quality standards in China and NOAA criteria indicated that these heavy metals did not pollute the Gulf water. Conversely, during the winter, the spatial fluctuations of eight heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Co, Zn, and Cu) in sediment samples were assessed. Several indicators, including the contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), and geo-accumulation index (Igeo), were used to evaluate the level of contamination in the Gulf sediments. The results showed that the two biggest ecological threats were lead and mercury. Additionally, the levels of contamination varied from somewhat contaminated to very contaminated. In the present study, Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from Tilapia zillii and Mugil cephalus samples collected during different seasons from various Suez Canal areas in Egypt. The prevalence of A. hydrophila, virulence genes, and antibiotic resistance profile of the isolates to the commonly used antibiotics in aquaculture were investigated to identify multiple drug resistance (MDR) and extensive drug-resistant (XDR) strains. In addition, a pathogenicity test was conducted using A. hydrophila, which was isolated and selected based on the prevalence of virulence and resistance genes, and morbidity of natural infected fish. The results revealed that A. hydrophila was isolated from 38 of the 120 collected fish samples (31.6%) and confirmed phenotypically and biochemically. Several virulence genes were detected in retrieved A. hydrophila isolates, including aerolysin aerA (57.9%), ser (28.9%), alt (26.3%), ast (13.1%), act (7.9%), hlyA (7.9%), and nuc (18.4%). Detection of antibiotic-resistant genes revealed that all isolates were positive for blapse1 (100%), blaSHV (42.1%), tetA (60.5%), and sul1 (42.1%). 63.1% of recovered isolates were considered MDR, while 28.9% of recovered isolates were considered XDR. Some isolates harbor both virulence and MDR genes; the highest percentage carried 11, followed by isolates harboring 9 virulence and resistance genes. It could be concluded that the high prevalence of A. hydrophila in aquaculture species and their diverse antibiotic resistance and virulence genes suggest the high risk of Aeromonas infection and could have important implications for aquaculture and public health. Simple Summary: Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is a potent immunosuppressive, persistent pathogen that can thrive in a range of environmental conditions and withstand even potent disinfectants. The common circulating pathotypes of IBDV in Egypt are classical virulent, attenuated, very virulent IBDV, and novel variant (nVarIBDV). The current study describes the incidence of nVarIBDV in 18 Egyptian chicken flocks although they were vaccinated against IBD. Partial sequence analysis of viral protein 2 (VP2) in two obtained isolates identified them as nVarIBDV (genotype A2d) exhibiting 100% identity to SD-2020 and 99.5–98.1% similarity to ZD-2018-1, QZ, GX and SG19 strains. Similarity to USA variant strains was 95.5–92.6%. Moreover, the similarities in the aa of the VP2 hypervariable region of both isolates to vaccine strains were 86–90.4%. Histopathological examination of both the bursa of Fabricius and spleen collected from diseased chickens in flock no. 18 revealed severe atrophy. In conclusion, this study identified the nVarIBDV genotype which is identical to the nVarIBDV circulating in China. Further studies are required to investigate the epidemiological situation of this novel genotype across the country, and to assess various vaccine protections against nVarIBDV. Additionally, it is crucial to incorporate nVarIBDV into the inactivated vaccines administered to breeder chickens prior to egg production to ensure complete protective and specific maternal immunity in their offspring during their first three weeks of life. After an extended period of detecting classical virulent, attenuated, and very virulent IBDV, a novel variant (nVarIBDV) was confirmed in Egypt in this study in 18, IBD vaccinated, chicken flocks aged 19–49 days. Partial sequence of viral protein 2 (VP2) [219 aa, 147–366, resembling 657 bp] of two obtained isolates (nos. 3 and 4) revealed nVarIBDV (genotype A2d) and OR682618 and OR682619 GenBank accession numbers were obtained. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that both nVarIBDV isolates were closely related to nVarIBDV strains (A2d) circulating in China, exhibiting 100% identity to SD-2020 and 99.5–98.1% similarity to ZD-2018-1, QZ, GX and SG19 strains, respectively. Similarity to USA variant strains, belonging to genotypes A2b (9109), A2c (GLS) and A2a (variant E), respectively, was 95.5–92.6%. Also, the VP2 hypervariable region in those two, A2d, isolates revealed greater similarities to Faragher 52/70 (Vaxxitek®) at 90.4% and to an Indian strain (Ventri-Plus®) and V217 (Xtreme®) at 89.7% and 86–88.9% in other vaccines. Histopathological examination of both the bursa of Fabricius and spleen collected from diseased chickens in flock no. 18 revealed severe atrophy. In conclusion, further studies are required to investigate the epidemiological situation of this novel genotype across the country, and to assess various vaccine protections against nVarIBDV. African horse sickness (AHS) is a non-contagious arthropod-borne infectious disease of Equidae. Because of its severity and quick spread, It is cosidered as a notifiable disease. The current study intended to look into the current suitation of the vector-borne African horse sickness virus (AHSV) in Egypt, determine viral seroprevelance, and assess the associated risk factors. In this context, 2739 sera and 150 spleen samples were collected from different Egyptian governorates and tested for AHSV screening. The sera were investigated for presence of antibodies against AHSV whilst spleen samples were tested for AHSV Ag and RNA detection. The obtained results revealed that all 2739 sera samples tested negative for AHSV antibodies. Furthermore, using ELISA and conventional reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), to identify AHSV Ag and nucleic acid, the 150 tested spleen samples gave negative results with both assays. In conclusion, the recorded results indicated the absence of antibodies, antigen, and viral nucleic acid of AHSV in all tested samples which proved that there is no circulating virus in the investigated Egyptian governorates in the period from 2017 to 2022. Evenually, the effective control programs are recommended by carrying out further epidemiological investigations to understand the current situation of arboviruses in the country. Cardiac arrest causes primary and secondary brain injuries. We evaluated the association between neuron-specific enolase (NSE), serum S-100B (S100B), electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns, and post-cardiac arrest outcomes in pediatric patients. A prospective observational study was conducted in the pediatric intensive care unit and included 41 post-cardiac arrest patients who underwent EEG and serum sampling for NSE and S100B. The participants were aged 1 month to 18 years who experienced cardiac arrest and underwent CPR after a sustained return of spontaneous circulation for ≥48 h. Approximately 19.5% (n = 8) of patients survived until ICU discharge. Convulsions and sepsis were significantly associated with higher mortality (relative risk: 1.33 [95% CI = 1.09–1.6] and 1.99 [95% CI = 0.8–4.7], respectively). Serum NSE and S100B levels were not statistically associated with the outcome (p = 0.278 and 0.693, respectively). NSE levels were positively correlated with the duration of CPR. EEG patterns were significantly associated with the outcome (p = 0.01). Non-epileptogenic EEG activity was associated with the highest survival rate. Post-cardiac arrest syndrome is a serious condition with a high mortality rate. Management of sepsis and convulsions affects prognosis. Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most important emerging foodborne pathogens. The objectives of this work were to investigate the incidence of Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes in soft cheese and ice cream in Assiut city, Egypt, and to examine the effect of some probiotic Bifidobacterium spp. (Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium animalis, or a mixture of the two) on the viability of L. monocytogenes in soft cheese. The existence of Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes was examined in 30 samples of soft cheese and 30 samples of ice cream. Bacteriological analyses and molecular identification (using 16S rRNA gene and hlyA gene for Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes, respectively) were performed on those samples. Additionally, Bifidobacterium spp. were incorporated in the making of soft cheese to study their inhibitory impacts on L. monocytogenes. Out of 60 samples of soft cheese and ice cream, 25 samples showed Listeria spp., while L. monocytogenes was found in only 2 soft cheese samples. Approximately 37% of soft cheese samples (11 out of 30) had Listeria spp. with about 18.0% (2 out of 11) exhibiting L. monocytogenes. In ice cream samples, Listeria spp. was presented by 47% (14 out of 30), while L. monocytogenes was not exhibited. Moreover, the addition of B. animalis to soft cheese in a concentration of 5% or combined with B. breve with a concentration of 2.5% for each resulted in decreasing L. monocytogenes efficiently during the ripening of soft cheese for 28 d. Listeria spp. is widely found in milk products. Probiotic bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium spp., can be utilized as a natural antimicrobial to preserve food and dairy products. Aeromonas veronii is associated with substantial economic losses in the fish industry and with food-borne illness in humans. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, antibiogram profiles, sequence analysis, virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes, and pathogenicity of A. veronii recovered from Mugil seheli. A total of 80 fish were randomly gathered from various private farms in Suez Province, Egypt. Subsequently, samples were subjected to clinical, post-mortem, and bacteriological examinations. The retrieved isolates were tested for sequence analysis, antibiogram profile, pathogenicity, and PCR detection of virulence and resistance genes. The prevalence of A. veronii in the examined M. seheli was 22.5 % (18/80). The phylogenetic analyses revealed that the tested A. veronii strains shared high genetic similarity with other A. veronii strains from India, UK, and China. Using PCR it was revealed that the retrieved A. veronii isolates harbored the aerA, alt, ser, ompAII, act, ahp, and nuc virulence genes with prevalence of 100%, 82.9%, 61.7%, 55.3%, 44.7%, 36.17%, and 29.8%, respectively. Our findings revealed that 29.8% (14/47) of the retrieved A. veronii strains were XDR to nine antimicrobial classes and carried blaTEM, blaCTX-M, blaSHV,tetA, aadA1, and sul1 resistance genes. Likewise, 19.1% (9/47) of the obtained A. veronii strains were MDR to eight classes and possessed blaTEM, blaCTX-M, blaSHV,tetA, aadA1, and sul1 genes. The pathogenicity testing indicated that the mortality rates positively correlated with the prevalence of virulence-determinant genes. To our knowledge, this is the first report to reveal the occurrence of XDR and MDR A. veronii in M. seheli, an emergence that represents a risk to public health. Emerging XDR and MDR A. veronii in M. seheli frequently harbored aerA, alt, ser, ompAII, and act virulence genes, and blaTEM, sul1, tetA, blaCTX-M, blaSHV, and aadA1 resistance genes. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying pneumonia in the pediatric age group. However, it plays a limited role in the early distinction between viral and bacterial pneumonia in children. The objectives of our study were to determine if LUS and the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were useful in identifying and distinguishing between viral and bacterial pneumonia in Egyptian children under the age of two. Within the first 12 h of being admitted to our department, 52 children with clinical symptoms and signs suggestive of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) underwent LUS and the NLR. LUS and the NLR strongly differentiated children with viral from those with bacterial pneumonia. For the early diagnosis and differentiation between viral and bacterial pneumonia in young Egyptian children, LUS was proven to be a noninvasive and reliable method. Fava beans is considered the first leguminous crop in Egypt. the research problem is the decline in the areas planted with Fava beans in Egypt, statistics indicate a decline in the area from about 2715 thousand acres in 2000 to about 175,4 thousand acres in 2019, and the researsh aims to study an economic efficiency of the Faba bean crop in Egypt by studying the current situation of production, consumption and economic indicators and estimating the efficiency of the use of economic resources in the Fava bean production farms in the research sample, the technical, the distribution and the economic efficiency for the resources used in the production of Fava beans in the cases of stability and change of capacity, using the data envelop analysis method. It was found that the average technical efficiency in the case of constant capacity reached about 81%, 92% and 98% for the three categories respectively. With regard to distributive efficiency, it was found that its average for the three tenure categories in case the return to capacity is stable, amounted to about 87%, 42% and 95%. While, it was in the case of a change in return to capacity is about 95%, 95% and 97% as for the economic efficiency, it was found that the average of the three categories in the first case amounted to about 74% 86% and 91% respectively, while in the case of a change in return to capacity amounted to about 96%,94% and 95%. Highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses are circulating in lots of avian species, causing major outbreaks in both wild and domestic poultry. Since its first emergence in 2014, clade 2.3.4.4 H5N8 viruses widely spread in the world resulting in enormous economic losses. In Egypt, the newly emerging high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 viruses have been detected in domestic poultry and in wild birds since the 2016/2017 winter season. AI H5N8 is cocirculating with LP H9N2 and HP H5N1 in the Egyptian environment. Poultry vaccination strategy in Egypt is based on commercially available H5 vaccines as an essential control policy, while the majority of commercial avian influenza H5 vaccines utilized in Egypt are not effective against H5N8 viruses. The present study included 3 experimental H5N8 inactivated vaccines based on the 2 major antigenic proteins of the currently circulating strain A/chicken/Egypt/Q16684C/2019 (H5N8), and the internal segments of the A/PR/8/1934 (H1N1) virus. Then, the protective efficacy of the three forms of inactivated vaccines (HAH5N8+7PR8, NAH5N8+7PR8 and HA, NAH5N8+6PR8) were compared regarding the parental PR8 virus in vaccinated specific pathogen free chickens. The NAH5N8+6PR8 as well as HAH5N8+7PR8 and HA vaccines showed the highest protection capacity of challenged SPF chickens and were able to elicit the highest titers of virus-neutralizing antibodies. Vibrio species are major sea foodborne pathogens that cause gastroenteritis as a serious disease of human public health due to the consumption of undercooked or raw fish. In the current study, a total of 100 fish samples (Nile tilapia, Nile perch, Meagre, and Sea bass) were collected randomly from retail markets in Egypt to investigate the prevalence of Vibrio species. The results revealed that Vibrio species isolated with an overall percentage of 52% of all examined fish. Bacteriological and chemical examinations revealed 42.3% V. parahaemolyticus, 26.92% V. mimicus, 19.23% V. alginolyticus, 9.62% V. vulnificus and 1.92% V. cholera. Antibiotic sensitivity declared high resistance of the isolates to different antimicrobial agents used in Egypt including Ampicillin (100%), Nalidixic acid (88.3%), Streptomycin (84.2%), Sulphamethoxazol (70.7%) and Oxytetracycline (64.8%) and it had sensitivity to Amikacin (94%), Ciprofloxacin (70.5%), Gentamicin (58.9%) with an average MAR index of 0.576. By polymerase chain reaction, all examined Vibrio isolates were positive for 16SrRNA specific for Vibrio spp. and harbored toxR gene virulence gene. Finally, dipping of tilapia in lemon juice 5% for 2 h reduced V. parahaemolyticus count by 0.42log cfu/g (62.08%). Consequently, hygienic measures should be approved to control the contamination of fish in the markets and the aquatic environment. Regular monitoring of fish for antibiotic resistance by Vibrio species, and their molecular characterization is necessary to improve the safety of seafood. The global spread of avian influenza virus (AIV) of clade 2.3.4.4b since 2016 has caused severe losses in wild birds and poultry and has posed a risk for the infection of mammals including humans. The vaccination of poultry has been used to limit the spread of the virus and mitigate its socioeconomic impact. Here, we describe H5N8 epidemics in chickens, turkeys and ducks from different localities in Egypt from 2019 to 2021. About 41.7% (n = 88/211) flocks were tested positive by RT-qPCR for H5N8 viruses with prevalence rates of 45.1% (n = 65/144) and 34.3% (n = 23/67) in vaccinated and non-vaccinated flocks, respectively. A sequence analysis of the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase genes indicated not only the multiple introduction events of H5N8 viruses in Egypt but also the establishment of endemic viruses in commercial poultry in 2020/2021. The recent H5N8 viruses in poultry in Egypt are genetically distinct from the majority of licensed vaccines used in the field. Together, our findings indicate that poultry in Egypt is an endemic center for clade 2.3.4.4b in the Middle East. Taking into account the great interest of Euphorbia plants as potential sources of active phytochemicals, this study aims to investigate the polyphenols of Euphorbia dendroides aerial parts in relation to its cytotoxic activity. the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of E. dendroides aerial parts were determined as 152.2 ± 10.16 mg GAE/g DW and 66.68 ± 4.46 mg RE/g DW, respectively. Polyphenolic-rich fraction (EdPh-B) was chromatographically fractionated from the hydro-ethanolic extract of this plant. LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of EdPh-B showed the presence of three phenolic acids and five flavonoids. Additionally, the extensive chromatographic purification of EdPh-B resulted in identified of seven known compounds; vanillin (1), luteolin (2), quercetin-3- O - β - d -glucuronopyranoside (3), kaempferol-3- O - β - d -glucuronopyranoside (4), gallic acid (5), trans -caffeic acid (6) and protocatechuic acid (7), which are first reported from the plant. Moreover, in vitro cytotoxic activity of two fractions (EdPh and EdPh-B) as well as the two isolated flavonoids (3 and 4) against two cancer (OVK-18 and MCF-7) and a normal (NHDF) cell lines was evaluated. EdPh, EdPh-B and compound 3 showed remarkable inhibitory activities against OVK-18 with IC 50 values 3.21, 5.10 μg/mL and 10.35 µM, and MCF-7 with IC 50 of 25.29, 6.09 μg/mL and 15.17 µM, respectively compared to vinblastine as a positive control. The current study introduced the activity levels of 238U, 232Th, and 40K as well as their radiological hazard indices for some valleys along the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea. Activity levels of 238U, 232Th, and 40K were performed by a ϒ-ray spectrometer at the Nuclear and Radiological Regulation Authority (CLERMIT), Egypt, using a NaTl detector (3x3 inch). "Genie-2000" program has been used to analyze the gamma-ray spectrum. The mean activity levels of 238U ranged from 6.10Bq/kg to 157.68Bq/kg, 232Th fluctuated between 4.38Bq/kg and 29.92Bq/kg, and 40K changed from 44.80Bq/kg to 497.18Bq/kg. The calculated absorbed and effective dose rate values in the downstream and the tidal flat of Hamrawin valley reached 76.41 and 88.39nGyh-1; the annual effective dose-effect was 93.71, and 108.40Sv Gy-1; the radium equivalent activity level index values were 163.59 and 190.01Bq kg, and the external hazard index reached (0.44 and 0.51). The representative level index values reached 1.16 and 1.30, and the excess lifetime cancer risk reached 0.27×10-3 in the valley downstream and 0.31×10-3 in the tidal flat zone, respectively. The radiological risk parameters values of (D), (AEDE), (Iγr), and (ELCR) at the Hamrawin valley are not safe, exposing health risks to the population, since they are higher than the permissible levels. Background: Surveillance for circulating emerging diseases of economic importance has a major role in the rapid response to major pathogen outbreaks. Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is one of the significant endemic viruses in Egypt. FMDV is periodically investigated for monitoring evolution and emergence of new variants. The genetic characterization of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus serotype A responsible for recent outbreaks of FMD in Egypt was determined. Methods: Samples were collected from different locations and virus isolation was performed using BHK-21 cells. Viral RNA was extracted and samples were screened for FMDV using real-time RT-PCR. DNA sequence analysis was performed and computational and bioinformatics analyses were used to determine the substitution rates and phylogenetic relationship. Results: Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of full-length 1D region of FMDV samples collected from different governorates in 2020 showed close similarity to Egyptian FMDV strains from serotype A-African topotype-G-IV with genetic variation of 6.5%. Recently isolated FMDV strains showed high genetic variations from locally used vaccine strains in the major antigenic sites of VP1 region. Conclusions: Although, efforts made by the veterinary authorities to implement an effective mass vaccination plan, the recently detected FMDV strains in this study could not be subtyped using the FMDV primers routinely used for molecular serotyping. These dissimilarities raise the alarm for reconsideration of the FMDV isolates used in vaccine manufacture. Objectives: This study aims to present the manifestations of juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) across Egypt, to focus on age at onset and gender-driven influence on disease characteristics, and to compare findings to other countries. Methods: The study included 404 Egyptian children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presenting to one of the specialized rheumatology centers corresponding to 13 major governorates. Juvenile cases age was ≤ 16°years at the time of recruitment. The SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) and damage index (DI) were assessed. Results: The mean age was 13.2 ± 2.4°years; 355 females and 49 males (7.2:1), and the disease duration was 2.3 ± 1.6 years, while age at disease onset was 11.1 ± 2.5°years. Their SLEDAI was 13.5 ± 12.3, and DI, 0.36 ± 0.78. The overall estimated prevalence of childhood-SLE patients in the recruited cohort in Egypt was 1/100,000 population (0.24/100000 males and 1.8/100000 females). 7.4% developed pre-pubertal SLE (≤ 7 years); 73.3%, peri-pubertal; and 19.3% during early adolescence. The differences according to age group were equal for gender and clinical manifestations except skin lesions present in 59.3% of pre-pubertal onset, 74.6% of peri-pubertal, and 84.2% of adolescents (p = 0.029), and renal involvement in 73.8% of peripubertal, 62.1% of pre-pubertal and 58.9% of adolescents (p = 0.03). Laboratory investigations, SLEDAI, and DI were similar among age categories. Lupus nephritis was more common in Egypt compared to JSLE from other countries. Conclusion: Our large multicenter study identified that female gender influenced disease characteristics with more frequent skin involvement. Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the commonest complications following cesarean section (CS) with a reported incidence of 3-20%. SSI causes massive burdens on both the mother and the health care system. Moreover, it is associated with high maternal morbidity and mortality rate of up to 3%. This study aims to determine the incidence, risk factors and management of SSI following CS in a tertiary hospital.Methods: This was an observational case control retrospective study which was conducted at Minia maternity university hospital, Egypt during the period from January 2013 to December 2017 (Five years). A total of 15,502 CSs were performed during the studied period, of these, 828 cases developed SSI following CS (SSI group). The control group included 1500 women underwent cesarean section without developing SSI. The medical records of both groups were reviewed regarding the sociodemographic and the clinical characteristics.Results: The incidence of SSI post-cesarean section was 5.34%. Significant risk factors for SSI were; chorioamnionitis (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 4.51; 95% CI =3.12-6.18), premature rupture of membranes (PROM) (AOR 3.99; 95% CI =3.11-4.74), blood loss of > 1000 ml (AOR 2.21; 95% CI =1.62-3.09), emergency CS (AOR 2.16; 95% CI =1.61-2.51), duration of CS of > 1 h (AOR 2.12; 95% CI =1.67-2.79), no antenatal care (ANC) visits (AOR 2.05; 95% CI =1.66-2.37), duration of labor of ≥24 h (AOR 1.45; 95% CI =1.06-2.01), diabetes mellitus (DM) (AOR 1.37; 95% CI =1.02-2.1 3), obesity (AOR 1.34; 95% CI =0.95-1.84), high parity (AOR 1.27; 95% CI = 1.03-1.88), hypertension (AOR 1.19; 95% CI = 0.92-2.11) and gestational age of < 37 wks (AOR 1.12; 95% CI = 0.94-1.66). The occurrence of some carcinogenic metals; Cu, Ni, Pb and Cd was investigated in sediment samples collected from 12 stations at Great Bitter and Timsah lakes. In the same time, two of the most famous edible bivalve species (Ruditapes decussatus and Paratapes undulatus) live buried in these sediments were chosen for measuring the same metals within their edible tissues in order to investigate the permissibility limits for human consumption. The bio-available forms of these metals were measured in the bulk sediments and the finest fractions (Ø3, Ø4 and Ø5) and in the edible tissues (flesh) of the selected bivalve individuals using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The finest fraction (Ø5) recorded the highest averages of most carcinogenic metals at Great Bitter and Timsah lakes with significant occurrences of Cd at both lakes. Carcinogenic Cd in the edible tissues of P. undulates and R. decussatus showed neglected low contents at the Great Bitter and Timsah lakes in spite of its very high contents in the surrounding sediment layer. Ni, Cu, and Pb averages in the edible tissues of P. undulates at the Great Bitter lake were 1.32, 0.23 and 0.37 μg/g wet wt. respectively. The averages of Ni, Cu and Pb in R. decussatus at Timsah Lake, were; 1.30, 0.24 and 0.95 μg/g wet wt. and in P. undulates were; 0.79, 0.14, and 1.15 μg/g wet wt. respectively. Bio-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) in the different bivalve species at the Great Bitter and Timsah lakes were much lower than unity (<<<1.0) indicating that the bivalves tend to accumulate their needs only from the surrounding environment. Finally, the investigated metals in the edible tissues of the different bivalve species are within the permissible safe limits for human consumption except for Pb that exceeds these limits and showed a slight hazard to health risk. Escherichia coli infections are of significant concern to the poultry industry. It is one of the most important and frequently encountered bacterial avian pathogens causing a wide variety of disease syndromes in birds, inducing up to 30% mortality. In this study, samples from the liver, heart blood, lung, air sacs, yolk sac and joints from diseased and freshly dead chickens from broiler and layer flocks were collected for the isolation and serotyping of E. coli. Nine E. coli serotypes were isolated and identified from 8 broilers and 1 layer flocks and they were O8 (3 strains), O27 (2 strains) and the other 4 isolates were O29, O115, O148 and O169, respectively. The in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity testing for these E. coli isolates revealed that all isolates were highly sensitive to cefotaxime, mostly higher sensitivity to amoxicillin + clavulanic acid and intermediate sensitivity to doxycycline, and spiramycin. During the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic there were several barriers to treatment access and medication adherence in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. There is no information regarding the RA patient health status in Egypt during the COVID-19. Thus,the aim of this work was to study the impact of the pandemic on RA patients through a patient-reported questionnaire and to determine the influence of gender, geographic regions. This multi-centre study initiated by the Egyptian College of Rheumatology (ECR) was conducted on 1037 RA patients attending rheumatology clinics from 10 governorates. The questionnaire provided covered socio-demographic data, health/disease status, information/knowledge about COVID-19 and medical/family history of the infection. Patients mean age was 44.2 ± 12.3 years;855 females and 182 males; 539(52%) from rural and 497(48%) from urban areas. 41.8% reported a striking difficulty to obtain hydroxychloroquine during the pandemic. The majority (70%) considered maintaining a regular visit to the rheumatologist in addition to remote contact mainly by phone (44.4%) or via WhatsApp (33.1%), in particular among male and urban patients. Urban patients were more likely to be infected by COVID-19 (12.9% vs 6.2%; p < 0.0001) than rural. Northern cities had more patients with suspected COVID-19 (13.9% vs 6.1%; p < 0.0001); was significantly associated with more disease flares (30.8% vs 5.8%) with subsequent change in the RA treatment (20.9% vs 6.4%; p < 0.0001). Patients with RA faced remarkable difficulty to obtain their medications with subsequent change in their disease status. With the purpose of decide the response of growth characteristic of some maize hybrids to foliar spraying treatments, two field experiments were carried out at the Experimental Station Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University, Egypt, during seasons of spring and autumn 2017 and 2018. All experiments were in strip-plot arrangement in 4 replications. Mean –plot was with maize included: hybrids i.e. Three Way Cross 324 (TWC 324), Single Cross 128 (SC 128) and Single Cross 131 (SC 131). The second plot was occupied with foliar spraying: without (0), Spraying on plants: trader fertilization Fert-plus (20:20:20, NPK), Amino acid (AA), yeast essence (YE) and mix Fert-plus powder (20-20-20, NPK) + amino acids (AA) + yeast extract (YE). The results showed that SC 131 hybrid surpassed other studied hybrids and recorded the highest values of stalk diameter, ear leaf area, ear length and diameter, in both seasons. SC 128 hybrid registered the tallest plants and the highest values in both seasons. Foliar spraying maize plants three times with the mixture treatment (Fert-plus + amino acids (AA) + yeast extract (YE) exceeded other foliar spraying treatments and produced the highest values of growth in both seasons. Promising results were obtained when using foliar fertilizing maize hybrids SC 131 or SC 128 with the mixture Fert-plus powder (20-20-20, NPK) at average 4 g/litre + Amino acid (AA) at of average 2.5 mL/litre + yeast essence (YE) at average of 100 mL/litre of water in each spraying. A field experiment was conducted at the Experimental Station Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University, Egypt, during 2017 and 2018 seasons to study the effect of water stress (skipping of some irrigations) and organic fertilization sources (without, farmyard manure "FYM", poultry manure "PM" and compost) as well as their interactions on growth, yield and its components and grains quality of maize. The experiment was carried out in strip-plot design with three replications. The obtained results from this investigation illustrate that giving maize plants 7200 m³/ha irrigation water divided equally in 6 irrigations gave the highest values of all studied characters of growth, yield and its attributes as well as grains quality in both seasons while skipping second and third irrigations, respectively (giving maize plants 4800 m³/ha irrigation water divided equally in 4 irrigations was accompanied with the least values of these characters in both seasons. Organic fertilizing maize with poultry manure (PM) gave the highest values of growth characters, yield and its attributes, grains quality characters, and followed by organic fertilizing with compost then organic fertilizing with farmyard manure (FYM) in both seasons. It can be recommended that giving maize plants 7200 m³/ha irrigation water divided equally in 6 irrigations and organic fertilizing with poultry manure at the rate of 20 m³/h in order to maximize its growth, productivity and grain quality and giving plants 4800 m³/ha irrigation water divided equally in 4 irrigations by skipping second and third irrigations, respectively and organic fertilizing with poultry manure at the rate of 20 m³/h to save irrigation water (2400 m³/ha) and maintain highest productivity and grain quality under the environmental conditions of Egypt. The energy strategy was updated in Egypt until 2035 in cooperation with the European Union. This strategy dealt with a study of all the potentials and scenarios of the energy in Egypt, where the generation mix includes nuclear power and renewable energy in addition to the traditional energy from gas and oil with a focus on renewable energy uses to reach about 42% from the generation mix. This paper includes a framework strategy to provide an optimal yearly mix from generation sources that gives minimum cost with an acceptable range from the emitted pollution and satisfying the forecasted load. The paper objective is achieved by calculating the overall generation mix in parallel with the fair sharing from each available source that gives minimum cost against the emitted pollution. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) scheme is used to implement the proposed strategy and subjected to the generation capability limit of each type of generation from solar, wind, nuclear and conventional (thermal and hydro) as given by the government. The effectiveness of this scheme is verified by comparing the results with the Egyptian network data and with conventional optimization methodology. The scheme structure was built using MATLAB library. According to the results, it has been proved that the designed scheme used with the help of the PSO can robustly and efficiently generate great economic benefits. Introduction: Resistance to fluoroquinolones (FQ) in uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) has emerged as a growing problem. Chromosomal mutations and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants have been implicated. Data concerning the prevalence of these determinants in UPEC in our hospital are quite limited. Purpose: To investigate the occurrence and genetic determinants of FQ resistance in UPEC isolated from urinary tract infection (UTI) cases in Zagazig University Hospitals. Patients and Methods: Following their isolation, the identification and susceptibility of UPEC isolates were performed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF MS). FQ resistance was detected by the disc diffusion method. Ciprofloxacin minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using E-test. Chromosomal mutations in the gyrA gene were detected using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), and for detection of PMQR, a couple of multiplex PCR reactions were used. Results: Among a total of 192 UPEC isolates, 46.9% (n=90) were FQ resistant. More than half of the isolates (57.8%) exhibited high-level ciprofloxacin resistance (MIC > 32 μg/mL). Mutations in gyrA were detected in 76.7% of isolates, with 34.4% having mutations at more than one site. PMQR determinants were detected in 80.1% of UPEC isolates, with aac(6ʹ)-Ib-cr gene being the most frequent found in 61.1% of isolates. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of both gyrA mutations and PMQR determinants among UPEC isolates in our hospital which contribute to high-level ciprofloxacin resistance, a finding that may require the revision of the antibiotics used for empirical treatment of UTI. In the current study, fowl adenovirus (FAdV) was detected and characterized from broiler chicken flocks with inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) in Northern Egypt during the period from March 2017 till March 2018. Grossly, the examined flocks showed hydropericardium and enlarged friable livers with ecchymotic hemorrhages. Histopathologically, liver tissues revealed intranuclear inclusion bodies in hepatocytes and hepatitis. Molecular detection by PCR assay using primer specific for the L1 loop region of hexon gene was conducted, the PCR products were sequenced for typing of FAdV. Seventeen out of 37 flocks tested were positive. Sequence analysis revealed that the 17 FAdVs were identical, suggesting a common ancestor for the FAdVs circulating in northern Egypt during the period of study. Phylogenetically, they clustered with fowl adenoviruses D species (FAdV-2 and FAdV-11). Interestingly, mortalities observed in the 17 flocks infected with FAdVs varied from 0.4% to 20%. To our knowledge, this is the first report of FAdV-D from broiler chicken in Egypt. Further studies are needed to examine different poultry species and other geographic areas in Egypt. The avian reovirus (AVR) induces various manifestations in chickens. They are associated with disease conditions including malabsorption syndrome and tenosynovitis. RT-PCR is a rapid, sensitive and specific diagnostic test for ARV detection and avoiding economic losses. Five broiler poultry farms in Behera province with reovirus like symptoms were screened for ARV. Results revealed the successful identification of one ARV isolate. The pathogenicity of the obtained isolate were assessed by experimental infection of 7-day-old commercial chicks and results revealed various post-mortem lesions in the liver, pancreas and proventiculus. The serological follow up of maternally derived antibodies against ARV in the negative control group revealed that the ELISA antibody titers were declined till becoming negative (ELISA titers less than 395) at 21 day old. Meanwhile, the experimentally infected group showed a significant increase in the ELISA antibody titers following infection. Our results confirm the continuous circulation of ARV in the Egyptian field as well as raise the concern toward ARV and its incrimination in retarded growth rate and arthritis among chicken flocks that consequently have great drawbacks on the poultry industry in Egypt. Natural selection is likely a major factor in shaping genomic variation of the African indigenous rural chicken, driving the development of genetic footprints. Selection footprints are expected to be associated with adaptation to locally prevailing environmental stressors, which may include diverse factors as high altitude, disease resistance, poor nutrition, oxidative and heat stresses. To determine the existence of a selection footprint, 268 birds were randomly sampled from three indigenous ecotypes from East Africa (Rwanda and Uganda) and North Africa (Baladi), and two registered Egyptian breeds (Dandarawi and Fayoumi). Samples were genotyped using the chicken Affymetrix 600K Axiom® Array. A total of 494,332 SNPs were utilized in the downstream analysis after implementing quality control measures. The intra-population runs of homozygosity (ROH) that occurred in >50% of individuals of an ecotype or in >75% of a breed were studied. To identify inter-population differentiation due to genetic structure, FST was calculated for North- vs. East-African populations and Baladi and Fayoumi vs. Dandarawi for overlapping windows (500 kb with a step-size of 250 kb). The ROH and FST mapping detected several selective sweeps on different autosomes. Results reflected selection footprints of the environmental stresses, breed behavior, and management. Intra-population ROH of the Egyptian chickens showed selection footprints bearing genes for adaptation to heat, solar radiation, ion transport and immunity. The high-altitude-adapted East-African populations' ROH showed a selection signature with genes for angiogenesis, oxygen-heme binding and transport. The neuroglobin gene (GO:0019825 and GO:0015671) was detected on a Chromosome 5 ROH of Rwanda–Uganda ecotypes. The sodium-dependent noradrenaline transporter, SLC6A2 on a Chromosome 11 ROH in Fayoumi breed may reflect its active behavior. Inter-population FST among Egyptian populations reflected genetic mechanisms for the Fayoumi resistance to Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), while FST between Egyptian and Rwanda–Uganda populations indicated the Secreted frizzled related protein 2, SFRP2 , (GO:0009314) on Chromosome 4, that contributes to melanogenic activity and most likely enhances the Dandarawi chicken adaptation to high-intensity of solar radiation in Southern Egypt. Purpose: To outline the management of newly identified trematode induced uveitis in pediatric patientsStudy design: Prospective interventional case seriesMethods: Patients with distinctive uveitis were recruited to either receive steroid monotherapy or undergo surgical excision of the inflammatory lesions based on a scoring system. Outcome measures included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular inflammatory activity, and incidence of ophthalmic complicationsResults: 170 patients (174 eyes) were recruited. Mean age was 11.1 years. Mean initial decimal BCVA (± SD) was 0.58 (± 0.31). Of 116 eyes with disease scores <5, 109 were treated effectively with steroids (93.97%). Surgical excision was offered to 58 patients and proved curative in the treated eyes. Protracted inflammation with persistence of the granulomas was noted in 5 patients refusing surgery. Mean follow up period was 21.5 months. Mean final BCVA was 0.69 (±0.27). A significant change in BCVA was noted (p=0.002). There has not been a need for retreatment in any of the study patients, who were also given instructions on evading exposure to fresh water habitats. The Gulf of Suez plays a significant role in Egypt's economy and strategic position in the region, making it a critical waterway domestically and internationally due to being an essential hub for Egypt's oil and gas industry, housing numerous offshore oil and gas fields in the region. This paper aimed to comprehensively present the environmental status of the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea, and pollution sources using one of the most fundamental ways to evaluate a water body. The Water Quality Index (WQI) measures nitrate levels in marine water and determines their potential harm to human health and the ecosystem. Excessive amounts of nitrate can pose non-carcinogenic health risks. Trophic state index (TSI), trophic index (TRIX), and Organic Pollution Index (OPI) are practical applications for surface water quality investigation and categorization based on contamination level. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Cluster Analysis (CA), were used to get better information for the studies on the water quality of surface waters. This study tested 38 subsurface locations during February 2021 for physical, chemical, microbiological, and nutritional salts. The WQI revealed that 71.23% of seawater samples were classified as having good water quality. However, TRIX and TSI metrics indicated eutrophication, with an average mean of 55.20, categorizing the water quality fairly. OPI values ranged between (3.50–3.75) which can be classified as moderate water quality. Finally, the current study's findings indicated the NO 3 − non-carcinogenic health hazards (HQ < 1) in all groups, but children are at a higher risk of NO 3 − exposure. Abstract Diterpenoids salvimulticanol (1) and salvimulticaoic acid (2) together with known diterpenoid (3–6) were isolated from Salvia multicaulis. Structures were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques including HRESIMS as well as 1D-, and 2D-NMR. In-vitro cytotoxicity was assayed against human cancer cell lines. As several metabolites exhibited activity against drug-resistance lines, compounds were screened against a panel of human drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant cancer lines. A proposed biosynthetic pathway for these new diterpenoids (1 – 2) as well as the cytotoxic structure-activity relationship of all identified compounds were discussed. Compound 1 and 6 showed the most potent cytotoxicity with IC 50 11.58 and 4.13 towards leukemia cell lines CCRF-CEM and CEM-ADR5000, respectively. Gallibacterium anatis biovar haemolytica constitutes a part of the normal microflora in the upper respiratory and genital tracts of healthy chickens, but it is also associated with different pathological conditions. In the current study, 102 commercial chicken flocks suffering from respiratory disease and/or drop in egg production were investigated for the presence of G. anatis during 2013 and 2015. These flocks comprised 8 breeder, 32 layer, and 62 broiler flocks. By culture method, 20 flocks were found positive: one isolate derived from broiler breeders, 6 isolates from layers, and 13 isolates from broilers. G. anatis biovar haemolytica was identified by phenotyping and PCR. Additionally, partial genome sequencing of 11 isolates (5 layer isolates of 2013 and 6 broiler isolates of 2015) based on 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA gene sequences was performed and revealed 96.5% to 100% genetic relatedness. Antibiotic sensitivity of these isolates revealed that the 2013 isolates were highly susceptible to florfenicol while the isolates of 2015 were highly susceptible to cefotaxime. H9N2 influenza virus has a great potential for causing severe economic loss in ducks especially in backyard ducks. The current study was conducted to isolate H9N2 influenza virus from backyard ducks and preparation of antiserum against isolated H9N2 influenza virus in rabbits and further evaluation by neutralization test. Samples from liver, spleen, brain and lung were collected from clinically infected ducks during 2014 and 2015. The viruses were isolated and propagated by inoculation of 10 days old embryonated chicken eggs via the allantoic sac. The allantoic fluid was harvested and tested for the titration of the HA activity using chicken erythrocytes. Avian influenza virus type A antigen was detected by flu detect strip test. The RNA was extracted from HA-positive allantoic fluid and identified by RT-PCR using specific primers for H9N2 virus. Antiserum against H9N2 virus was prepared in rabbits. The produced antibody was tested and titrated by HI test against H9N2 isolates from ducks and chickens as well as field samples from ducks and H5N1 isolated from chickens. Neutralization test was also done for evaluation H9N2 antibody protective titer. Ten samples from ducks were HA positive with titer values of 2-5 to 2-10. The HA titer of H9N2 isolates from chickens ranged from 2-4 to 2-11. Also, 16 field samples from ducks were HA positive with titer values of 2-3 to 2-7 and the HA titer of H5N1 isolates from chickens ranged from 2-7 to 2-12. The results of RT-PCR showed that the 10 samples from ducks were positive for H9N2 HA gene. The HI results showed complete inhibition of H9N2 isolates from ducks and chickens. HI test for field samples from ducks showed complete inhibition of 16 field samples. On the contrary, HI test for H5N1 isolates from chickens showed no inhibition of 13 isolates using H9N2 rabbit specific antiserum. The neutralization index using H9N2 virus was 2-5. The presence of LPAI H9N2 may add another risk factor to the poultry industry in Egypt together with the endemicity of HPAI H5N1, especially that backyard ducks and chickens are reared in direct contact allowing easy virus transmission and adds more stress to the poultry populations. Avian nephritis virus is a new circulating virus in Europe, Australia, and Japan, this virus lead to growth retardation of young chickens by causing interstitial nephritis. Investigation was done in 5 Egyptian governorates (North Sinai, El-Minoufiya, El- Gharbia and El-Behera and Kafr-Elsheikh) on 28 broiler chicken flocks and all the flocks were negative for Avian nephritis virus. In addition, we continued the detection of IBV in the same 28 broiler chicken flocks, resulting that 11 flocks out of 28 flocks, were positive for IBV. Regarding spike glycoprotein (S1) gene, sequencing was done to 5 isolates, which showed that they belonged to Eg/12120s/2012 spike glycoprotein (SP1) gene variant 2. Protectotyping was done using 2 isolates, and 3 types of IB live attenuated vaccines (H120, Ma5, IB primer). In conclusion, this study recorded the extensive circulation of variant 2 IBV in Egyptian broiler chickens. Regarding the pathogenicity of the tested variant and cross protection with available live IB vaccines, it was clear that there no complete cross protection against IBV isolates although of using live attenuated IB vaccines so there a need for further studies to define a more effective program for IB control. Purpose. To investigate tear function, ocular manifestations, and squamous metaplasia of the conjunctival epithelium (SMCE) in children with end stage renal failure (ESRF) on dialysis. Methods. Thirty children with ESRF and 20 age and sex matched controls during the period from January 2014 to May 2015 underwent full ophthalmologic examination and the tear function was investigated by the Schirmer and tear film break-up time (TBUT) tests. SMCE was evaluated by impression cytology and immunocytochemistry. The correlations of tear function status with ESRF-related clinical and biochemical variables were measured statistically. Results. Dry eye symptoms were detected in 26% of children with ESRF, compared with none of the controls (P=0.05) and SMCE was almost absent. Values of the Schirmer and TBUT tests were significantly lower in children with ESRF for right eye (t=24.63, P=0.01, and t=11.9, P=0.002, resp.) and left eye (t=24.7, P=0.02, and t=11.4, P=0.0004, resp.). TBUT and the Schirmer test values were correlated inversely with the duration of ESRF (R=-0.45, P=0.01, and R=-0.46, P=0.01, resp.) and with the duration of dialysis (R=-0.39, P=0.03, and R=-0.45, P=0.01, resp.). None of the following parameters was associated with distorted tear function including serum creatinine, electrolytes, parathyroid hormone, total protein, albumin, CBC parameters, and systolic or diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion. The basal tear secretion and tear film stability were lower while the dry eye symptoms such as itching and redness were more common among children with ESRF. Background: Egyptians recognized the healing power of herbs and used them in their medicinal formulations. Nowadays, "Attarin" drug shops and the public use mainly the Unani medicinal system for treatment of their health problems including improvement of memory and old age related diseases. Numerous medicinal plants have been described in old literature of Arabic traditional medicine for treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) (or to strengthen memory). Methods: In this study, some of these plants were evaluated against three different preliminary bioassays related to AD to explore the possible way of their bio-interaction. Twenty three selected plants were extracted with methanol and screened in vitro against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and cycloxygenase-1 (COX-1) enzymes. In addition, anti-oxidant activity using DPPH was determined. Results: Of the tested plant extracts; Adhatoda vasica and Peganum harmala showed inhibitory effect on AChE at IC50 294 µg/ml and 68 µg/ml respectively. Moreover, A. vasica interacted reversibly with the enzyme while P. harmala showed irreversible inhibition. Ferula assafoetida (IC50 3.2 µg/ml), Syzygium aromaticum (34.9 µg/ml) and Zingiber officinalis (33.6 µg/ml) showed activity against COX-1 enzyme. Potent radical scavenging activity was demonstrated by three plant extracts Terminalia chebula (EC500 2.2 µg/ml), T. arjuna (3.1 µg/ml) and Emblica officinalis (6.3 µg/ml). Conclusion: Interestingly, differential results have been obtained which indicate the variability of the mode of actions for the selected plants. Additionally, the reversible interaction of A. vasica against AChE and the potent activity of F. assafoetida against COX-1 make them effective, new and promising agents for treatment of AD in the future, either as total extracts or their single bioactive constituents. The Egyptian government is considering embarking on a new wave of health sector reform. Although primary care is seen as central to the anticipated reforms, little is known about the current morbidity and utilization patterns in Egyptian publicly funded primary care. We conducted this survey study of patient encounters to describe the demographic characteristics of patients attending publicly-funded primary care practices, the relative frequency of conditions encountered in these practices, and the rates of drug prescription, investigation and referral. Method Cross-sectional survey of twelve primary care practices and 2458 patient consultations. Additional secondary data were collected from five of the twelve practices for preventive services provided at these practices i.e. immunizations, family planning and ante-natal care. 54% of the attendances were for people below the age of twenty, of which 54% were females. In patients above the age of twenty, women accounted for 73% of consultations. Upper respiratory tract infection was the most common reason for encounter, accounting for 24% of the presentations, followed by gastroenteritis (10%), intestinal parasites (5%), and lower respiratory tract infections (5%). Over 97% of patients were prescribed at least one drug, whereas investigation and referral rates were low (15% and 5% respectively). When the analysis was repeated for practices where data on both curative and preventive services were available (5 practices and 2146 consultations), substantial proportions of patients were found to seek care for immunizations (25%), family planning (12%), and ante-natal care (11%). Conclusion Most patients utilizing primary care practices in Egypt seek care for minor and preventive services with relatively few consultations for more serious conditions. . Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major health concern in Egypt being highly prevalent among Egyptians. The two genders experience different responses to HCV infection and show variations in response to interferon (IFN)-based therapy that may be attributed to sex hormones. We previously demonstrated the suppressive effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) on the expression of the IFN-stimulated gene MxA in HCV-infected peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The selective oestrogen receptor (ER) modulator Tamoxifen has been shown to have an antiviral effect against HCV, but its effect on the host immune response is unknown. We investigated the effect of Tamoxifen on the IFN signalling pathways in PBMCs of HCV-infected Egyptian females. We pooled PBMCs and treated then with exogenous interferon alpha (IFNα) or the TLR7 ligand, Imiquimod, and quantified the relative expressions of MxA using RTqPCR. Studies were performed with and without Tamoxifen pretreatment. Pretreatment with Tamoxifen reversed the suppressive effect of E2 on the JAK-STAT pathway in IFNα-treated PBMCs as indicated by a significant increase in MxA expression ( P = 0.05*). Tamoxifen pretreatment also significantly upregulated MxA expression in Imiquimod-treated PBMCs ( P = 0.0011**), an effect not ascribed to ER blocking nor to an upregulation in TLR7 expression because Tamoxifen showed no potentiating effect on the expression of the receptor. Abstract: Background: The objective of the present work is to determine the prevalence of Cyclospora cayetanensis in symptomatic and asymptomatic immune-competent children less than five years in Alexandria, Egypt. Subjects and methods: This study was conducted on two groups: Group I: 100 children suffering from acute diarrhea for less than 14days. Group II: 100 apparently healthy children without diarrhea. All patients were subjected to history taking, physical examination and stool examination by: direct smear examination, concentration using formol ether sedimentation and Sheather’s sugar floatation technique and staining using modified Ziehl–Neelsen and modified trichrome stains. Results: There was a significant difference between Cyclospora infected children in symptomatic (17%) and asymptomatic (6%) groups. Cryptosporidium was detected in 10 diarrheic children (10%), five cases were combined with Cyclospora infection and not detected in any of the asymptomatic group. Microsporidia, Giardia lamblia and Hymenolepis nana were also detected in the symptomatic group. There was no significant difference as regards age and residency of Cyclospora positive and negative cases in both groups. In asymptomatic group, Cyclospora infected cases were males while in negative cases, 50% were males. This was statistically significant. There was no significant difference between the type of feeding and the Cyclospora infected cases in the two groups. As regards weight for height standard deviation (SD), there was no significant difference between the number of cases below normal in infected and noninfected diarrheic children. All asymptomatic cases were within the normal range without a significant difference. There was no significant difference between symptomatic Cyclospora infected and noninfected cases as regards the duration of diarrhea and clinical presentations. Conclusion: Cyclospora infection in immune-competent symptomatic and asymptomatic children in Alexandria is common. Abstract: This paper presents a novel method of matching wind turbine generators to a site using turbine performance index (TPI) in conjunction with minimum deviation ratio (DR) between rated speed of wind turbine generator (WTG) and optimal speed and resulting in minimum cost of energy (COE). The methodology allows yielding higher energy production at higher capacity factor and minimum cost of energy. The wind speeds are parameterized using cubic mean cube-root and statistically modeled using Weibull probability density function. Normalized power (P N ) and capacity factor (CF) are expressed entirely in normalized rated speed. The plots of P N , CF and TPI versus normalized rated wind speed are drawn for known values of Weibull parameters of a site. The proposed methodology for identifying optimum wind turbine generator parameters for two sites with installed WTG and two candidate locations for installation of WTG in Egypt are examined. The cost of energy (COE) and capital cost of WTG under different tower heights at the sites are also determined. The proposed methodology, if used at the planning and development stages of wind power stations, will serve as useful tool to make a judicious choice of a wind turbine generator that yields higher energy at higher capacity factor. Aim: To evaluate endothelial cell loss after cataract surgery performed using the divide-and-conquer versus phaco-chop nuclear fracturing techniques. Settings: Mansoura Ophthalmic Center, Mansoura University, Egypt. Methods: Patients and methods: This prospective study included 30 eyes of 30 patients. Eyes were randomly selected and divided into two groups: group 1 (15 eyes) undergone divide-and-conquer phacoemulsification technique and group 2 (15 eyes) undergone phaco-chop technique. During surgery, phaco time, phaco power, and grade of nuclear firmness were recorded. The endothelial cell density and central corneal thickness (CCT) was recorded preoperatively and postoperatively at one day, one week, one month and 3 months. Results: less phaco energy (absolute phaco time) was significantly used during phaco-chop technique than during divide-and-conquer technique. The mean absolute phaco time (APT) was 32.6 ± 13.1 S.D in divide and conquer group compared to 15.2 ± 11.8 S.D in the phaco chop group. Postoperatively, both groups had a significant but equal decrease in cell density. There were no statistically significant changes in variation in endothelial cell density, or CCT. Visual acuity increased significantly and equally in both groups. Higher endothelial cell loss had no significant correlation with age, sex, axial length (AL), APT and nuclear grade. The government of Egypt has decided to construct a new barrage with hydropower facilities, 3.5 km downstream of the existing old one. The water levels in the head pond for the new barrage will be continuously maintained at a level with approximately 0.5 m higher than water level in the head pond of the existing one. To evaluate the effect of increasing the head pond water level on the groundwater and drainage, there is a need to enhance linking reservoir and stream/aquifer system. Visual MODFLOW has been used to simulate the surface water/groundwater interaction in the area of proposed new barrage. The model has been calibrated against the available historical groundwater levels for 25 observation wells based on the steady state conditions. Numerical modeling suggests that river stage is the primary control of rapid groundwater hydraulic head fluctuations in the aquifer system. At present the area at which the depth to groundwater table less than one meter is about 30 110 feddans (1 feddan = 4200 m2). This area will increase to be about 40 610 feddans after the construction of the new barrage and increasing the head pond water level. The mitigation measures to overcome the effect of construction of the new barrage have been discussed and their costs have been estimated and evaluated. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a hazardous opportunistic pathogen that is involved in many serious human diseases and is considered to be an important foodborne pathogen found in many food types. Multidrug resistance (MDR) K. pneumoniae strains have recently spread and increased, making bacteriophage therapy an effective alternative to multiple drug-resistant pathogens. As a consequence, this research was conducted to describe the genome and basic biological characteristics of a novel phage capable of lysing MDR K. pneumoniae isolated from food samples in Egypt. The host range revealed that KPP-5 phage had potent lytic activity and was able to infect all selected MDR K. pneumoniae strains from different sources. Electron microscopy images showed that KPP-5 lytic phage was a podovirus morphology. The one-step growth curve exhibited that KPP-5 phage had a relatively short latent period of 25 min, and the burst size was about 236 PFU/infected cells. In addition, KPP-5 phage showed high stability at different temperatures and pH levels. KPP-5 phage has a linear dsDNA genome with a length of 38,245 bp with a GC content of 50.8% and 40 predicted open reading frames (ORFs). Comparative genomics and phylogenetic analyses showed that KPP-5 is most closely associated with the Teetrevirus genus in the Autographviridae family. No tRNA genes have been identified in the KPP-5 phage genome. In addition, phage-borne virulence genes or drug resistance genes were not present, suggesting that KPP-5 could be used safely as a phage biocontrol agent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the spring of 2019, distinct virus-like symptoms were observed in the Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate in Egypt in naturally infected eggplants. Leaves of affected plants showed interveinal leaf chlorosis, net yellow, chlorotic sectors, mottling, blisters, vein enation, necrotic intervention, and narrowing symptoms. The Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) was suspected of to be involved in this disease. Forty plant samples from symptomatic eggplants and 10 leaf samples with no symptoms were collected. The samples were tested by double antibody sandwich ELISA (DAS-ELISA) using AMV-IgG. Six of the 40 symptomatic leaf samples tested positive for AMV, while, DAS-ELISA found no AMV in the 10 leaf samples without symptoms. The AMV Egyptian isolate (AMV-Eggplant-EG) was biologically isolated from the six positive samples tested by DAS-ELISA and from the similar local lesions induced on Chenopodium amaranticolor and then re-inoculated in healthy Solanum melongena as a source of AMV-Eggplant-EG and confirmed by DAS-ELISA. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay with a pair of primers specific for coat protein (CP) encoding RNA 3 of AMV yielded an amplicon of 666 bp from infected plants of Solanum melongena with AMV-Eggplant-EG. The amplified PCR product was cloned and sequenced. Analysis of the AMV-Eggplant-EG sequence revealed 666 nucleotides (nt) of the complete CP gene (translating 221 amino acid (aa) residues). Analysis of phylogeny for nt and deduced aa sequences of the CP gene using the maximum parsimony method clustered AMV-Eggplant-EG in the lineage of Egyptian isolates (shark-EG, mans-EG, CP2-EG, and FRE-EG) with a high bootstrap value of 88% and 92%, respectively. In addition to molecular studies, melatonin (MTL) and salicylic acid (SA) (100 μM) were used to increase the resistance of eggplant to AMV- infection. Foliar spray with MLT and SA caused a significant increase in the morphological criteria (shoot, root length, number of leaves, leaf area, and leaf biomass), chlorophyll and carotenoid content, antioxidant enzymes, and gene expression of some enzymes compared to the infected plants. On the other hand, treatment with MLT and SA reduced the oxidative damage caused by AMV through the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anions, hydroxyl radicals, and malondialdehyde. Background: Reducing maternal mortality ratios (MMRs) remain an important public health issue in Egypt. The three delays model distinguished three phases of delay to be associated with maternal mortality: 1) first phase delay is delay in deciding to seek care; 2) second phase delay is delay in reaching health facilities; and 3) third phase delay is delay in receiving care in health facilities. Increased health services' coverage is thought to be associated with a paradigm shift from first and second phase delays to third phase delay as main factor contributing to MMR. This study aims to examine the contribution of the three delays in relation to maternal deaths.Methods: During a 10 year period (2008-2017) 207 maternal deaths were identified in a tertiary hospital in Minia governorate, Egypt. Data were obtained through reviewing medical records and verbal autopsy for each case. Then data analysis was done in the context of the three delays model.Results: From 2008 to 2017 MMR in this hospital was 186/100.000 live births. Most frequent causes of maternal mortality were postpartum hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and sepsis. Third phase delay occurred in 184 deaths (88.9%), second phase delay was observed in 104 deaths (50%), always together with other phases of delay. First phase delay alone was observed in 13 deaths (6.3%) and in 82 deaths (40%) with other phases of delay. One fifth of the women had experienced all three phases of delay together. Major causes of third phase delay were delayed referral from district hospitals, non-availability of skilled staff, lack of blood transfusion facilities and shortage of drugs.Conclusions: There is a paradigm shift from first and second phases of delay to the third phase of delay as a major contributor to maternal mortality. Synthetic antimicrobials have a negative impact on food quality and consumer health, which is why natural antimicrobials are urgently needed. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) has gained considerable importance for food poisoning and infection in humans and animals, particularly in biofilms. As a result, this study was conducted to control the CoNS isolated from food samples in Egypt. CoNS isolates were selected on the basis of their antibiotic susceptibility profiles and their biofilm-associated behavior. In this context, a total of 29 different bacteriophages were isolated and, in particular, lytic phages (6 isolates) were selected. The host range and physiological parameters of the lytic phages have been studied. Electron microscopy images showed that lytic phages were members of the families Myoviridae (CoNShP-1, CoNShP-3, and CoNSeP-2 isolates) and Siphoviridae (CoNShP-2, CoNSsP-1, and CoNSeP-1 isolates). CoNShP-1, CoNShP-2, and CoNShP-3 were found to be virulent to Staphylococcus haemolyticus, CoNSsP-1 to Staphylococcus saprophyticus and CoNSeP-1 and CoNSeP-2 to Staphylococcus epidermidis. Interestingly, the CoNShP-3 exhibited a typical polyvalent behavior, where not only lysis CoNS, but also other genera include Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA), Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis. In addition, CoNShP-3 phage showed high stability at different temperatures and pH levels. Indeed, CoNShP-3 phage showed an antibiofilm effect against Staphylococcus epidermidis CFS79 and Staphylococcus haemolyticus CFS43, respectively, while Staphylococcus saprophyticus CFS28 biofilm was completely removed. Finally, CoNShP-3 phage demonstrated a high preservative efficacy over short and long periods of storage against inoculated CoNS in chicken breast sections. In conclusion, this study highlights the control of CoNS pathogens using a polyvalent lytic phage as a natural antibacterial and antibiofilm agent from a food safety perspective. Background and Aim: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus causes continuous outbreaks, leading to serious economic consequences that affect animal productivity and restrict trade movement. The potential influence of the disease was due to the emergence of new strains or re-emergence of local strains with major antigenic variations due to genetic mutations. This study aims to evaluate circulating virus in samples collected from infected animals during an outbreak using antigenic characterization and identify whether there is an emergence of a new strain or mutation. Materials and Methods: Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to screen 86 samples. Viral protein 1 (VP1) codon sequencing was performed. The virus was isolated from the samples inoculated on the baby-hamster kidney cell line and Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed for serotyping and antigen detection. Results: Based on the RT-PCR screening results, 10 positive samples were selected for sequencing. The sequences belonged to the FMD serotype A African topotype originating from the ancestor prototype Sudan/77, with which it shared 98.48% ± 1.2% similarity. The divergence with local isolates from 2020 was 9.3%. In addition, the sequences were 96.84% ± 1.01% and 95.84% ± 0.79% related to Egyptian-Damietta type 2016 and Sudanese-2018, respectively. Divergence with vaccinal strains ranged from 10% to 17%. Amino acid sequence analysis revealed that the isolates had variation in the most prominent antigenic regions (residues 35-75) and the immunogenic determinants of the G-H loop of VP1 (residues 100-146 and 161-175). Conclusion: The current isolates should be included in the locally produced vaccine to provide broader immunogenic coverage against serotype A African topotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
