The article discusses the politicalization of computer hackers. The author observes that hacker culture has evolved from a preoccupation with pranks to an aggressive advocacy for freedom from Internet censorship. In support of the Occupy Wall Street movement in the U.S., the hackers group Anonymous threatened the online presence of the New York Stock Exchange. Hackers also assisted anti-government protesters in Egypt after the regime of President Hosni Mubarak restricted Internet access. Hackers' actions in Egypt reflect a desire among hackers to oppose both censorship and oppression, it is noted.
