Abstract

This article discusses the practices of imprisonment in the Netherlands and England. It investigates the claim that the Dutch provided a more humane penal system compared to the English. It describes the conditions of prisoners in the two countries. In addition, the article explores both transformations and continuities in penal trends cross different political contexts.
