The article discusses a research conducted by the National Institute of Industrial Psychology, London, England, regarding the selection, training and status of supervisors. The survey, based on short visits to 87 firms by the investigator, studied existing practices and requirements of the supervisors' jobs, installed industrial selection programs and determined improvements in selection processes. The findings indicate that only two firms had made serious attempts to use systematic practices including formal interviewing, intelligence and other tests, and probationary periods, as selection procedures. It suggests that selection of supervisors should be based on efficient use of systematic procedures.
