The article discusses the lighting design for a 1983 production of the opera "Boris Godunov," directed by film director Andrei Tarkovsky and performed by the Royal Opera at Covent Garden in London, England. The set design, the limitations of stage lighting during the early 1980s, and the use of lighting to determine the atmosphere of the setting are examined. A scene-by-scene synopsis of the lighting design is presented and the desired effects are compared with film direction and atmosphere. The cooperative nature of creating the setting and design is also explored.
