Kigi region, today the center of a district in the province of Bingol, was established in the form of a sanjak during the Ottoman era. First, it was linked to the province of Diyarbekir, and in 1535 to the Province of Erzurum. In the neighborhood of Kigi, there are small-scale rivers, but are important to the region. Besides this, its mountainous structure has created an environment suitable for animal husbandry. It is hardly conducive to agriculture. However, according to the findings of 16th century, notable amounts of grain were produced. Part of this production was used for grain producers themselves or for animals. Livestock and crop production led to the spread of leather processing and milling. Commercial products such as silk, çivid agent, originating in Diyarbekir or Iran, and other transit trade products transferred from there to the west was directly or indirectly effective in the development of regional trade and industry.
