The article reports on challenges facing automobile engineers in Europe due to legislated phaseout of R-134a, issues with carbon dioxide systems and proposals for R-134a replacements. The phaseout of R-134a will start with new platform vehicles in 2011 and expanding to include all vehicles by 2017. Two fluid possibilities are proposed by Honeywell and DuPont.

The article presents the objective of the Automotive Open Systems Architecture, a consortium created to provide a standardized platform for automotive systems in Europe. The consortium is aiming for an industry-wide adoption of its proposed automotive architecture standard. The article discusses the advantages of light-emitting diode (LED) headlights in Europe. The article focuses on the designs of Ford Motor Co. engineer Rod Mansfield on high-performance automobiles in Europe. It states that Mansfield worked on NVH and chassis before heading the engineering sector at Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) in 1970.
