The goal of this descriptive study was to analyze the differences between patients in a therapeutic community and inmates in a drug free unit in prison in several areas measured by the EuropASI test. It was also intended to develop a user profile for each of the groups, with the psychosocial characteristics of these patients as well as the psychopathological profile. The sample was made up of 174 patients and inmates who requested treatment for drug addiction during 2006 at one Therapeutic Community and at a Drug Free Unit in a prison. The results show that, in general, the drug free program users present greater severity in the areas measured by the EuropASI and suffer more problems than external program users. The psychiatric state of the incarcerated patients also seems much more affected than the others, since the percentage of prisoners with personality disorders is much greater than in the therapeutic community at all scales of the MCMI-II test, reaching statistical significance in 17 of the 22 scales. The results are discussed and the clinical implications of them analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
