Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the most prevalent initiatives undertaken by leading universities in sustainability and offer a roadmap for other institutions seeking to undertake similar actions and contribute to more effective implementation of sustainability practices. Design/methodology/approach: By using a quantitative assessment approach, the study sheds light on successful initiatives implemented by universities worldwide, spanning six categories: transportation, waste management, curriculum, food and dining, water and energy. Each category is clearly related to one or more of the 17 sustainable development goals. A cluster analysis was also applied to identify regional trends in preferred initiatives. Findings: The study underlines the importance of integrating sustainability principles into the curricula of higher education institutions (HEIs) as well as educating staff members on energy and water management. The most common and impactful initiatives in the studied six categories have been identified. Many of the initiatives mentioned in the study do not just result in reducing ecological footprint but also provide economic savings as well. Differences among regions and countries were observed in the implementation of initiatives. Cultural and habitual factors should not be disregarded during the selection process of initiatives. Originality/value: The findings of this study may help universities to take their first steps toward implementing initiatives that can effectively promote sustainable development. Results will aid other HEIs in planning for next steps while outlining the more common initiatives.

Biological invasions pose a rapidly expanding threat to the persistence, functioning and service provisioning of ecosystems globally, and to socio‐economic interests. The stages of successful invasions are driven by the same mechanism that underlies adaptive changes across species in general—via natural selection on intraspecific variation in traits that influence survival and reproductive performance (i.e., fitness). Surprisingly, however, the rapid progress in the field of invasion science has resulted in a predominance of species‐level approaches (such as deny lists), often irrespective of natural selection theory, local adaptation and other population‐level processes that govern successful invasions. To address these issues, we analyse non‐native species dynamics at the population level by employing a database of European freshwater macroinvertebrate time series, to investigate spreading speed, abundance dynamics and impact assessments among populations. Our findings reveal substantial variability in spreading speed and abundance trends within and between macroinvertebrate species across biogeographic regions, indicating that levels of invasiveness and impact differ markedly. Discrepancies and inconsistencies among species‐level risk screenings and real population‐level data were also identified, highlighting the inherent challenges in accurately assessing population‐level effects through species‐level assessments. In recognition of the importance of population‐level assessments, we urge a shift in invasive species management frameworks, which should account for the dynamics of different populations and their environmental context. Adopting an adaptive, region‐specific and population‐focused approach is imperative, considering the diverse ecological contexts and varying degrees of susceptibility. Such an approach could improve and refine risk assessments while promoting mechanistic understandings of risks and impacts, thereby enabling the development of more effective conservation and management strategies. Introduction: One of the main causes of anaphylaxis in Europe is Hymenoptera stings. Epidemiological data indicate that insect venom hypersensitivity concerns up to 5.0-7.5% of the population. Aim: To assess the influence of selected clinical and socio-demographic factors on the tests used in the study: WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief) and CECS (Courtauld Emotional Control Scale). Material and methods: The research was conducted among patients diagnosed with Hymenoptera venom allergy, treated with immunotherapy. The following socio-demographic and clinical factors were evaluated: gender, age, place of residence, marital status, education, professional activity, financial status, type of allergy and duration of therapy. The research was carried out in 2014-2015 in the Chair and Clinic of Allergology, Clinical Immunology and Internal Diseases, Jan Biziel University Hospital No. 2 in Bydgoszcz. The study was conducted by means of a diagnostic survey using an interview. Results: Quality of life varies significantly depending on age, education, professional activity and financial conditions. The type of allergy significantly differentiates the value of CECS in the sample. People allergic to bee venom have a higher CECS level = 53.54 compared to people allergic to wasp venom, which show a lower CECS level = 49.03. Conclusions: Quality of life varies depending on age, education, professional activity and financial conditions. A higher quality of life is found in the youngest people, with better education, professionally active and declaring good financial conditions. Patients diagnosed with a bee venom allergy have a higher level of emotional control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Physical activity (PA) during childhood is important for preventing future metabolic syndrome (MetS). To examine the relationship between PA and MetS in more detail, accurate measures of PA are needed. Previous studies have only utilized a small part of the information available from accelerometer measured PA. This study investigated the association between measured PA and MetS in children with a new method for data processing and analyses that enable more detailed interpretation of PA intensity level. Methods: The association between PA pattern and risk factors related to MetS was investigated in a cross- sectional sample of children (n = 2592, mean age 10.9 years, 49.4% male) participating in the European multicenter I. Family study. The risk factors examined include body mass index, blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, insulin resistance and a combined risk factor score (MetS score). PA was measured by triaxial accelerometers and raw data was processed using the 10 Hz frequency extended method (FEM). The PA output was divided into an intensity spectrum and the association with MetS risk factors was analyzed by partial least squares regression. Results: PA patterns differed between the European countries investigated, with Swedish children being most active and Italian children least active. Moderate intensity physical activity was associated with lower insulin resistance (R2 = 2.8%), while vigorous intensity physical activity was associated with lower body mass index (R2 = 3.6%), MetS score (R2 = 3.1%) and higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (R2 = 2.3%). PA of all intensities was associated with lower systolic- and diastolic blood pressure, although the associations were weaker than for the other risk factors (R2 = 1.5% and R2 = 1.4%). However, the multivariate analysis implies that the entire PA pattern must be considered. The main difference in PA was observed between normal weight and overweight children. Conclusions: The present study suggests a greater importance of more PA corresponding to an intensity of at least brisk walking with inclusion of high-intense exercise, rather than a limited time spent sedentary, in the association to metabolic health in children. The methods of data processing and statistical analysis enabled accurate analysis and interpretation of the health benefits of high intensity PA that have not been shown previously. Purpose: Several genomic loci have been previously found to be associated with intervertebral disc degeneration, so far. Data are mostly derived from northern European countries whereas data derived from Southern European Ancestor are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between radiological disease severity of lumbar disc degeneration and certain genetic loci in a sample of participants from Southern Europe.Methods: Seventy-five patients with mild to severe lumbar disc degeneration and 25 healthy controls were enrolled into the study. In each subject, each lumbar intervertebral disc was separately examined to obtain a total radiological score for disease severity. In addition, single-nucleotide polymorphisms of predefined genetic samples were analyzed in all participants: COL1A1 Sp1, COL9a2 Trp2, COL9a3 Trp3, and VDR TaqI.Results: Degeneration scores were significantly worse in cases with COL1A1 Sp1, COL9a3 Trp3, and VDR TaqI mutations; however, COL9a2 Trp2 mutation was not associated with a difference in the severity of disc degeneration. In addition, subjects with mutation in more than one gene sample (n = 20) had significantly worse degeneration scores than the remaining study participants (n = 80) (17.70 ± 2.72 vs. 21.81 ± 1.81, p < 0.001).Conclusion: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms occurring in COL1A1, COL9a3 and VDR genes seem to be associated with the development of lumbar disc degeneration in this cohort, possibly with even more pronounced association when multiple mutations are present in the same individual. By further prospective twin studies in associated genes and analyses of their relationship with environmental factors in an internationally sampled large cohort will make a more clear-minded conclusion about their association with disc degeneration, which would yield better appreciation and clinical planning of some predisposed people for these pathologies. In January 2011, the European Union established three European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) for the financial sector: the European Banking Authority (EBA, in London), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA, in Frankfurt) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA, in Paris). So far, the ESAs have played less a supervisory role than a regulatory role. They have focused on technical measures specifying in more detail the often abstract legislation adopted by the European Parliament and the Council. These measures may be binding technical standards or non-binding guidelines or recommendations. They are of great importance, to both financial and non-financial industry. Currently, the European Commission is reviewing the regulations governing the three ESAs and will bring forward its proposals for amendments in early 2015. It is thought that the new context at the present time of capitalist hegemony is globalizing world's 'projects' originating from the West. The West World provides important contributions to the projects, especially supported by the European Union, which will be carried out on specific social aspects and cultures (especially women, youth and children) of the East World about which the West World thinks relatively can't accord to its understanding and mind-structure. In this paper on the context of a historical and expressional perspective of how capitalist hegemony as a whole establishes control on social aspects and cultures which are out of itself by the hand of projects will be studied. The background of projects actualized as a new trivet of legitimating of capitalist hegemony through nongovernmental organizations (NGO) will be analyzed and hereby attempt to reveal its expressional aspect of capitalist hegemony. Ecological criteria are needed for a comprehensive evaluation of groundwater ecosystem health by including biological components with the physical and chemical properties that are already required by European directives. Two methodological approaches to assess the ecological status of groundwater ecosystems were combined in two alluvial plains (the Ariège and Hers Rivers, southwestern France) varying in agriculture intensity (from grassland to crop rotation including maize and sunflower, and to maize monoculture). In the first approach, the composition of invertebrate assemblages (only obligate-groundwater crustaceans, i.e. stygobionts) sampled in 28 wells differing in their land use contexts was analysed. Abundance, species richness, and assemblage composition significantly changed with agricultural land use or urbanization around the wells. In the second approach, we tested an in situ exposure of sentinel organisms to quantify their response to the environmental pressures. The epigean and native amphipod species Gammarus cf. orinos was used as the sentinel species. Amphipods (30 individuals in each of 10 wells) were exposed for one week to the in situ conditions at two seasons with contrasted concentrations of pollutants. The Ecophysiological Index (EPI) synthetizing the survival rates and energetic storage decreased in wells with low oxygen and high nitrate concentrations, but only during the highest contamination period. Atrazine-related compounds negatively impacted sentinel health whatever the season. Abstract: GPS observations from EUREF permanent GPS network were used to observe the response of TEC (Total Electron Content) to the total solar eclipse on October 3, 2005, under quiet geomagnetic conditions of the daytime ionosphere. The effect of the eclipse was detected in diurnal variations and more distinctly in the variations of TEC along individual satellite passes. The trough-like variations with a gradual decrease and followed by an increase of TEC at the time of the eclipse were observed over a large region. The depression of TEC amounted to 3–4TECU. The maximum depression was observed over all stations located at the maximum path of the solar eclipse. The delay of a minimum level of TEC with respect to the maximum phase of the eclipse was about 20–30min. The two-dimensional TEC maps constructed with high temporal resolution (5-min interval) show that the eclipse produced remarkable changes in the structure of the ionosphere. These TEC maps demonstrate also that the depression of TEC reached 20–30% compared to a quiet day (October 4, 2005). The complex pattern in the spatio-temporal TEC distribution presents the important role in the dynamic processes in the ionosphere during the eclipse. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The TEC time series of ionospheric quiet and disturbed conditions over different European stations for a half of the solar cycle period from 1995 to 2001 were analyzed in this study. The wavelet analysis enabled to detect disturbances in TEC during the period considered, as well as to compute coherences and time delays between wavelet transform coefficients of TEC corresponding to different stations located near the same meridian. The information about the time delay between different GPS stations can be useful for prediction purposes. The forecasts of the TEC time series for the stations considered were computed by the autoregressive moving average (ARMA) method for 1, 2 and 3h ahead at a single location, and compared with the corresponding future values of TEC data. A sample of the results for representative periods is presented. The prediction accuracy depends on the starting prediction epochs and ionospheric conditions, and for a few hours ahead it is of the order of 5% of the real TEC values over a GPS station.
