The article discusses the multi-annual work programme of the European Railway Agency (ERA) for 2014-2017. The agency's works in accordance with the European Commission White Paper on transport and its policy goals for railways is outlined. Its strategic priorities to achieve its objective on areas including the development of railway safety, railway technical specifications and processes, and rail regulations. How it promotes and disseminates the EU legal framework is also explored.

The article reports on the agreement among European railway companies to launch better and more cross-border rail services from Frankfurt/Main and Milan, Germany through Switzerland starting December 2017.
