One of the youngest nations, or states of Europe, was still in the middle of conflicts at the turn of the millennium. Although the country's existence itself is not anymore an acute problem, the most important social and economic break line is still drawn between Macedonian majority and Albanian minority. Albanians make up almost 25% of the country's population, and their number and proportion is continuously increasing. It is so much the more remarkable as Albania and especially Kosovo (or the still unresolved problem of its legal status) might mean a strong attractive force for the neighbouring country's Albanian population, cornered to its social periphery. Thus the economic and social situation of the Albanian settlement territory cut up by several countries still remained a destabilizing factor not only in Macedonia but also in a broader area, whose European integration is still uncertain.
