Background: On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak to be a pandemic. As the mosquito season progressed, the understandable concern that mosquitoes could transmit the virus began to increase among the general public and public health organisations. We have investigated the vector competence of Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus, the two most common species of vector mosquitoes in Europe, for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Due to the very unusual feeding behaviour of Ae. albopictus, we also evaluated the role of this mosquito in a potential mechanical transmission of the virus., Methods: For the vector competence study, mosquitoes were allowed to take several infectious blood meals. The mosquitoes were then collected and analysed at 0, 3, 7 and 10 days post-feeding. For the mechanical transmission test, Ae. albopictus females were allowed to feed for a short time on a feeder containing infectious blood and then on a feeder containing virus-free blood. Both mosquitoes and blood were tested for viral presence., Results: Culex pipiens and Ae. albopictus were found not be competent vectors for SARS-CoV-2, and Ae. albopictus was unable to mechanically transmit the virus., Conclusions: This is the first study to show that the most common species of vector mosquitoes in Europe do not transmit SARS-CoV-2 and that Ae. albopictus is unable to mechanically transmit the virus from a positive host to a healthy host through host-feeding.

Background: The European Regional Office of the World Health Organization developed a strategic approach to halt the indigenous transmission of measles in its 53 Member States by 2015, World Health Organization [1]. Many European countries, including Italy began the implementation of national programs to reach this goal., Objectives: To describe and discuss the results of laboratory activity in measles surveillance, performed from January 2011 to December 2013 by the Italian National Reference Laboratory for Measles and Rubella., Study Design: Samples of suspected measles cases were collected from different Italian regions to confirm clinical diagnosis. Anti-measles IgM antibodies detection by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay and/or molecular detection by Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction assay were performed. Positive samples were sequenced for viral characterization., Results and Conclusions: According to results from the National Reference Laboratory's activity urine and blood seem to be the best specimens for measles laboratory surveillance. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a co-circulation of the genotypes D4 and D8 during the reviewed period, a cluster of B3 and sporadic cases of D9 and H1., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. During 2005-2006, nine measles virus (MV) genotypes were identified throughout the World Health Organization European Region. All major epidemics were associated with genotypes D4, D6, and B3. Other genotypes (B2, D5, D8, D9, G2, and H1) were only found in limited numbers of cases after importation from other continents. The genetic diversity of endemic D6 strains was low; genotypes C2 and D7, circulating in Europe until recent years, were no longer identified. The transmission chains of several indigenous MV strains may thus have been interrupted by enhanced vaccination. However, multiple importations from Africa and Asia and virus introduction into highly mobile and unvaccinated communities caused a massive spread of D4 and B3 strains throughout much of the region. Thus, despite the reduction of endemic MV circulation, importation of MV from other continents caused prolonged circulation and large outbreaks after their introduction into unvaccinated and highly mobile communities.
