This study aimed to assess and compare the utilization of preventive and other health services and the cost or availability in different regions of Europe, before and during the economic crisis. The data used in the study were obtained from Wave 8 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (2019/2020) and Wave 1 data (2004/5), with a sample size of 46,106 individuals aged ≥50 across 27 countries, adjusted to represent a population of N = 180,886,962. Composite scores were derived for preventive health services utilization (PHSU), health care services utilization (HCSU), and lack of accessibility/availability in health care services (LAAHCS). Southern countries had lower utilization of preventive services and higher utilization of other health services compared to northern countries, with a significant lack of convergence. Moreover, the utilization of preventive health services decreased, whereas the utilization of secondary care services increased during the austerity period. Southern European countries had a significantly higher prevalence of lack of accessibility. An increase in the frequency of lack of accessibility/availability in health care services was observed from 2004/5 to 2019/20. In conclusion, our findings suggest that health inequalities increase during crisis periods. Therefore, policy interventions could prioritize accessibility and expand health coverage and prevention services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The current study aims to examine the use of preventive and other health services among adults aged 50+ in eleven European countries. Methods: The data used were derived from 16,120 adults aged 50+ years participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (2004/05). Preventive Health Services Utilization score (PHSUs) and Health Care Services Utilization score (HCSUs) were assessed as a composite value from answers to 12 and 16 questions respectively, on a scale ranging from 0 to 100. Estimations were based on a complex study design. Results: Participants from Central European countries were found to have significantly higher mean PHSU and HCSU scores than their counterparts in Northern and Southern regions, (p < 0.05) and also exhibited a greater gap between the two scores (29.3, 95% CI: 28.6–30.1). Overall mean PHSU score was 39.9 (95% CI: 39.4–40.4) and mean HCSU score 12.4 (95% CI: 12.2–12.7). Women have a higher mean PHSUs and HCSUs (p < 0.001); as age increases, PHSUs falls and HCSUs rises (p < 0.001). Better educated participants appear to have higher mean PHSUs and HCSUs (p < 0.001). In addition, both of the above scores increase in the presence of chronic diseases (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Strong correlation is seen between comorbidity, increasing age, educational level, and retirement on the one hand, and increased use of health services on the other hand. Purpose: Previous research has suggested that individuals are mostly prone to loneliness in their later years of life because of exposure to several risk factors typical of old age. The current study aims to examine possible demographic, health and social determinants of loneliness among older adults in Europe.Methods: Data on a nationally representative sample of 5074 Europeans aged ≥ 65 years were drawn from the first wave of the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE, 2004/2005). Frequency of feelings of loneliness was examined according to adverse health conditions, stressful life events and social isolation indicators.Results: Female gender, older age, lower socioeconomic status, living unpartnered, being childless and having no activity involvement were significantly associated with frequent feelings of loneliness (p < 0.001). The proportion of the respondents who declared enduring loneliness most of the time compared with none of the time was significantly higher among Southern Europeans relative to their Northern counterparts (p < 0.001). Recent departure of offspring from the parental nest was a significant predictor of loneliness in both the second (ORs = 2.08; 95% CI 1.24-3.48) and the third (ORs = 1.75; 95% CI 1.03-2.96) multiple regression models.Conclusion: In this sample of older Europeans, several demographic characteristics, specific adverse health conditions, stressful life events and social isolation indicators were associated with feelings of loneliness. Policy initiatives for the alleviation of loneliness in older age should therefore aim at improving psychosocial and health-related difficulties faced by this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The current study aims to examine the utilization of preventive health services in relation to social isolation among older Europeans adults. Methods: Data on 5,129 adults 65 years of age and older was obtained from the first wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE, 2004/05). Prevalence of social isolation indicators (living arrangements, marital status, number of children, contact with children, proximity to children, activity participation, social exchange) was assessed in relation to preventive health services utilization, which was ascertained by a 12-item composite score (PHSUs). Estimations were based on the complex study design. Results: Diverse facets of social isolation were differently associated to preventive care. Significantly lower mean PHSUs were found for adults living unpartnered, who were unmarried, had no children and were socially disengaged. A similar pattern was thus drawn regarding the clustering of social isolation indicators (4+). Considerable variations were detected across SHARE countries in the distribution of PHSUs among socially isolated adults. Conclusion: Socially isolated individuals were found to receive fewer preventive services. This finding confers important evidence on the potential factors that affect the use of preventive health services among older adults. It is also suggestive of the need to develop public health and social policies with the aim to alleviate social isolation and as a means to enhance preventive care uptake in later life. Objective: The study objective was to assess the burden of major cardiovascular disease (CVD) behavioral risk factors (BRFs) (i.e., smoking, excess body weight, physical inactivity, risky alcohol consumption) among individuals in the community with and without CVD history.Methods: For the current study, a subset of the data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) was analyzed, which were collected from 26,743 individuals aged 50+ years old, during the 1st wave of SHARE in 2004/05 in eleven European countries.Results: Among those with CVD, there is a statistically significant higher percentage of inactive individuals (81.4% vs. 69.5 among those without CVD), and of individuals with excess body weight (64.3%) or obese (21.6%). Patients with CVD had a lower prevalence of smoking and risky alcohol consumption in most countries, whereas the prevalence of high body weight and physical inactivity was higher in CVD patients compared to individuals without CVD in almost all countries. More than half of the population has at least two BRFs, with a significantly higher prevalence of multiple BRFs among those diagnosed with CVD.Conclusion: Study findings suggest that a significant burden of behavioral risk factors for CVD remains in the population overall but also among patients diagnosed with CVD. Given the significant prevalence of BRFs, the prevention benefits would be immense for all stakeholders involved and negligence would be perilous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: We investigated the effects of weight loss and maintenance with diets that varied with regard to protein content and glycemic index (GI) on metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) status. Methods: Secondary analyses were performed within the Diet, Obesity and Genes (DiOGenes) study (2006-2008), a randomized controlled dietary intervention. Nine hundred and thirty-eight overweight and obese adults from eight European countries entered an 8-wk low-calorie-diet period. Seven hundred and seventy-three adults who lost at least 8% of their body weights were randomized to one of five ad libitum diets for 6 mo: 1) low-protein (LP)/low-GI (LGI); 2) LP/high-GI (HGI); 3) high-protein (HP)/LGI; 4) HP/HGI; and 5) control diet. MetSyn prevalence and a standardized MetSyn score were assessed at baseline, after the low-calorie diet, and after the intervention. Results: Weight loss among participants while on the low-calorie diet significantly reduced MetSyn prevalence (33.9% versus 15.9%; P < 0.001) and MetSyn score (- 1.48 versus -4.45; P < 0.001). During weight maintenance, significant changes in MetSyn score were observed between the groups, with the highest increase detected in the LP/HGI group (P = 0.039, partial η² = 0.023). Protein, GI, and their interaction did not have isolated effects on study outcomes. Conclusions: Neither protein nor GI affected MetSyn status in this sample of European overweight and obese adults. However, a diet with a combination of an increased protein-to-carbohydrate ratio with low-GI foods had beneficial effects on MetSyn factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of this study was to estimate the differences in prevalence of multiple behavioral risk factors (MBRFs) for chronic diseases in European adults, from eleven North, Central and South European countries. Subjects and methods : We used data from 26,656 adults, aged 50+ years, participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (2004/05). Physical inactivity, high body weight, smoking and risky alcohol consumption were assessed and estimated based on sampling weights, controlling for socioeconomic characteristics. Results: 53.4 % of adults had 2+ MBRFs. Prevalence in the total sample was highest for physical inactivity (71.2 %) and lowest for smoking (18.1 %). The cluster of high body weight and physical inactivity had the highest prevalence of MBRFs (35.4 %), with higher prevalence in Southern Europe ( p < 0.05). Smoking and alcohol consumption presented the greatest degree of clustering (observed to expected ratio = 2.44). Spain and Greece had the highest prevalence of clustering 2+ MBRFs, whereas Southern European countries had a higher mean number of MBRFs, compared to North and Central European regions ( p < 0.05). Conclusion: Prevalence of MBRFs varied between countries, with Southern European countries engaging in more risky behaviors. The current study assessed the physical performance of youth Greek football (soccer) players between the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Youth and National Leagues' matches. This effort was based on 271 measurements of nine physical/motor activities recruited from 25 players with a mean age of 18.4 (±1.2 years) during August 2017 and January 2018 from official-matches of UEFA Youth (n=6) and National Leagues (n=16). Measurements were recruited using Global-Positioning-System Technology-(GPS) and differences were assessed through analysis of covariance. 56.0% of the players were 18.0+ years old, 52.0% were midfielders, and 56.5% of players' participations were recorded in full time (90.0+ minutes). Between the two competitions of UEFA Youth and National Leagues' matches, it has been found that there is significant difference only in mean number of decelerations (71.4 vs. 61.7, respectively, p=0.010). High mean levels of total distance-(TD), very high-intensity-speed-running-distance-(VHS), maximal-sprinting-speed-distance-(MS), high-speed-running-(HSR), distance/time-(D/T), sprints, number of accelerations and maximum-velocity-(Vmax) were noticed as well as in UEFA Youth Leagues' matches but did not differed significantly in relation to counterparts (p>0.05). The researchers observed that youth football players displayed similar efforts in all matches maintaining a high level of physical performance, without separating the matches according to the competition, due to the educational behavior adopted within the football academy of the club. Background: Cognitive function is crucial during aging. This study assessed the cognitive function of European adults aged 50 and over in relation to handgrip strength and physical inactivity. Study Design: This was a cross-sectional survey., Methods: Data were collected from 41,395 adults from 27 European countries participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) during 2019-2020. Cognitive function was assessed based on five tests, and cognitive impairment was defined using 3+tests. Handgrip strength and physical inactivity were also correlated through the analysis of covariance using a complex study design., Results: The majority of participants were female (56.6%), with a mean age of 70.9 years, and 22.6% presented multimorbidity. Furthermore, 51.1% had a normal cognitive function, while 13.3% had cognitive impairment (The estimated population was 21,944,722). Moreover, cognitive impairment was more prevalent in females than in males (14.4% vs. 12.0%, P <0.001) in patients with no years of education ( P <0.001) and origin from southern European countries ( P <0.001). Additionally, participants with cognitive impairment had lower mean handgrip strength compared to those with cognitive impairment in 1-2 criteria or with normal cognitive function (29.3 vs. 33.4 and 35.1 kg, respectively, P <0.001). Physically inactive participants had higher odds ratio (OR) of cognitive impairment than those engaging in moderate/vigorous physical activity, both in 1-2 tests (OR:1.73, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.32-2.26) and in 3+tests (OR: 3.36, 95% CI: 2.57-4.40)., Conclusion: Cognitive impairment presented low prevalence and was associated with low levels of handgrip strength and physical inactivity. Introduction: Noncommunicable diseases are the leading cause of illness and death worldwide; behavioral risk factors (BRFs) contribute to these diseases. We assessed the presence of multiple BRFs among European adults according to their physical and mental health status., Methods: We used data from 26,026 adults aged 50 years or older from 11 countries that participated in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (2004-2005). BRFs (overweight or obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and risky alcohol consumption) were assessed according to physical health (ie, presence of chronic diseases, disease symptoms, or limitations in activities of daily living) and mental health (depression) through multiple regression estimations., Results: Overweight or obesity in men and physical inactivity in women were the most prevalent BRFs. Compared with physically active adults, physically inactive adults had a higher mean number of chronic diseases (1.33 vs 1.26) and chronic disease symptoms (1.55 vs 1.47). Risky alcohol consumption (≥4 servings of an alcohol beverage ≥3 times a week) was associated with a higher mean depression score (2.84 vs 2.47). Compared with adults with 0 or 1 BRF, adults with 2 or more BRFs had significantly higher odds of having 1 or more chronic diseases (men: 1.52; women: 1.73) and functional limitations (men: 1.65; women: 1.79) and higher prevalence of high blood pressure (37.8% vs 28.2). Belgian adults with BRFs had the highest mean number of chronic diseases or functional limitations among those who were overweight or obese and the highest mean number of chronic diseases and disease symptoms among those who smoked and were physically inactive., Conclusion: We found revealed significant positive associations between BRFs and poor health among middle-aged and older European adults. Primary health care intervention programs should focus on developing ways to reduce BRF prevalence in this population.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence and the associations between multiple behavioral risk factors (MBRFs) for chronic diseases in European adults., Method: Data from 26,743 individuals, aged 50+years, participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) (2004/05) were used. Estimations were based on weights according to the complex sampling design., Results: In total, 71.2% of individuals were physically inactive, while 59.8% had high body weight. 53.4% had 2+ MBRFs, while males presented higher prevalence of MBRF clusters than females (P < 0.001). Females displayed lower odds of increased alcohol consumption (OR = 0.16, P < 0.001) and higher odds of physical inactivity (OR = 1.47, P < 0.001) than males. Individuals who lived alone, compared to living with a partner and those with more, compared to fewer education years, exhibited a significantly higher and lower, respectively, mean MBRF score (P < 0.001)., Conclusion: The prevalence of MBRFs was considerably high in this sample of European adults, while not living alone and having higher education may prove protective. Principles: The efficacy of low-calorie diets (LCDs) has not been investigated in large-scale studies or among people from different regions, who are perhaps unaccustomed to such methods of losing weight. The aim of the present study was to investigate changes in obesity measures among overweight/obese adults from eight European cities (from Northern, Central and Southern Europe) during the 8-week LCD phase of the DiOGenes study (2006-2007), a family-based, randomised, controlled dietary intervention., Methods: 938 overweight/obese adults completed baseline examinations and underwent an 8-week LCD, providing 3.3-4.2 MJ/day to replace all meals. Anthropometric measurements and body composition were assessed at baseline and post-LCD., Results: 773 (82.4%) adults (mean age, 43.1 y) completed the LCD successfully. The highest drop-out rate was observed in Southern (24.9%) and the lowest in Northern (13.3%) European cities. Overall, the LCD induced favourable changes in all outcomes, including an approximate 11.0% reduction in body weight and body fat percentage. Changes in outcomes differed significantly between regions, with North- and Central-European cities generally achieving higher percentage reductions in most anthropometric measurements assessed. Nonetheless, participants in Southern Europe reduced their body fat percentage significantly more than participants in Northern Europe (-11.8 vs. -9.5%, P = 0.017)., Conclusions: The LCD significantly improved anthropometric and body composition measurements in all cities participating in DiOGenes.
