Power-to-Liquid (PtL) plants can viably implement carbon capture and utilization technologies in Europe. In addition, local CO2 sources can be valorized to substitute oil and gas imports. This work's aim was to determine the PtL efficiency obtained by combining a solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC) and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. In addition, a recommended plant configuration to produce synthetic fuel and wax at pilot scale is established. The presented process configurations with and without a tail gas reformer were modeled and analyzed using IPSEpro as simulation software. A maximum mass flow rate of naphtha, middle distillate and wax of 57.8 kg/h can be realized by using a SOEC unit operated in co-electrolysis mode, with a rated power of 1 MWel.. A maximum PtL efficiency of 50.8% was found for the process configuration without a tail gas reformer. Implementing a tail gas reformer resulted in a maximum PtL efficiency of 62.7%. Hence, the reforming of tail gas is highly beneficial for the PtL plant's productivity and efficiency. Nevertheless, a process configuration based on the recirculation of tail gas without a reformer is recommended as a feasible solution to manage the transition from laboratory scale to industrial applications. In addition to the climate crisis's looming dangers, Europe was recently affected by profoundly volatile energy markets, entailing soaring inflation and political uncertainty. Power-to-Liquid processes have the potential to curb global warming by valorizing CO 2 to produce synthetic fuels and platform chemicals while simultaneously substituting fossil energy imports. The impact of the CO 2 source, i.e., cement production, biogas upgrading and solid biomass combustion, on Power-to-Liquid plants was evaluated by implementing the designed configuration, including CO 2 capture, solid-oxide electrolyzer, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and steam reforming, in IPSEpro, a stationary equation-based process simulation tool. Maximum Power-to-Liquid efficiency of 63.8% and maximum carbon efficiency of 88.6% were obtained by exploiting CO 2 emitted by a biogas upgrading unit. Solid-oxide electrolyzers ranging from 23 MW el. (biogas) to 504 MW el. (cement) are required to process CO 2 streams from 4.5 to 100 t/h. In addition, the mass and energy balances of the three considered configurations were determined and embedded in a process flow diagram. The presented study aims to facilitate future decisions concerning carbon capture and utilization policy by assessing the CO 2 source's influence on Power-to-Liquid plants' key performance indicators. Abstract: Background: The Bladder Cancer Research Consortium (BCRC) created nomograms to predict all-cause mortality (ACM), cancer-specific mortality (CSM), and recurrence after radical cystectomy (RC) for urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB). Objective: To perform a formal validation of the BCRC nomograms in a large multi-institutional patient cohort from Europe. Design, setting, and participants: Records of 2501 patients who underwent RC for UCB at eight European centers were reviewed. Complete information for external validation was available in 2404 patients for the ACM and CSM nomograms and in 2243 patients for the recurrence nomogram. Measurements: For the purpose of external validation, model discrimination was measured using the receiver operating characteristics derived area under the curve. Calibration plots examined the relationship between predicted and observed probabilities at 2 yr, 5 yr, and 8 yr. Decision curve analyses were applied to assess the net benefit derived from the three models. Results and limitations: The discrimination accuracies of the BCRC nomograms for ACM and CSM at 2 yr, 5 yr, and 8 yr after RC were 71.0%, 69.1%, and 68.2%, and 74.9%, 73.1%, and 72.4%, respectively. The accuracy of discrimination for the recurrence nomogram at the same time points was 76.5%, 75.3%, and 74.9%, respectively. Calibration plots revealed slight underestimations from ideal predictions. Decision curve analyses showed an increased net benefit for the use of the BCRC nomograms in this cohort. Limitations include the retrospective study design, potential surgeon bias, and lack of a central pathologic review. Conclusions: The ACM, CSM, and recurrence nomograms showed acceptable predictive accuracies and could thus be adopted into clinical practice in UCB patients treated in Europe. Background: High-quality management of prostate cancer is needed in the fields of clinics, research, and education., Objective: The objective of this project was to develop the concept of "European Prostate Cancer Centres of Excellence" (EPCCE), with the specific aim of identifying European centres characterised by high-quality cancer care, research, and education., Design, Setting, and Participants: A task force of experts aimed at identifying the general criteria to define the EPCCE. Discussion took place in conference calls and by e-mail from March 2017 to November 2017, and the final consensus meeting named "European Association of Urology (EAU) Prostate Cancer Centre Consensus Meeting" was held in Barcelona on November 16, 2017., Outcome Measurements and Statistical Analysis: The required criteria were grouped into three main steps: (1) clinics, (2) research, and (3) education. A quality control approach for the three steps was defined., Results and Limitations: The definition of EPCCE consisted of the following steps: (1) clinical step-five items were identified and classified as core team, associated services, multidisciplinary approach, diagnostic pathway, and therapeutic pathway; (2) research step-internal monitoring of outcomes was required; clinical data had to be collected through a prespecified database, clinical outcomes had to be periodically assessed, and prospective trials had to be conducted; (3) educational step-it consists of structured fellowship programmes of 1yr, including 6mo of research and 6mo of clinics; and (4) quality assurance and quality control procedures, related to the quality assessment of the previous three steps. A limitation of this project was that the definition of standards and items was mainly based on a consensus among experts rather than being an evidence-based process., Conclusions: The EAU Prostate Cancer Centre Consensus Meeting defined the criteria for the identification of the EPCCE in the fields of clinics, research, and education. The Prostate Cancer Programme of the European School of Oncology developed the concept of specialised interdisciplinary and multiprofessional prostate cancer care to be formalized in Prostate Cancer Units (PCU). After the publication in 2011 of the collaborative article "The Requirements of a Specialist Prostate Cancer Unit: A Discussion Paper from the European School of Oncology", in 2012 the PCU Initiative in Europe was launched. A multiprofessional Task Force of internationally recognized opinion leaders, among whom representatives of scientific societies, and patient advocates gathered to set standards for quality comprehensive prostate cancer care and designate care pathways in PCUs. The result was a consensus on 40 mandatory and recommended standards and items, covering several macro-areas, from general requirements to personnel to organization and case management. Objective: The aim of this study was to externally validate the prognostic value of concomitant urothelial carcinoma in situ (CIS) in radical cystectomy (RC) specimens using a large international cohort of bladder cancer patients., Methods: The records of 3,973 patients treated with RC and bilateral lymphadenectomy for urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB) at nine centers worldwide were reviewed. Surgical specimens were evaluated by a genitourinary pathologist at each center. Uni- and multivariable Cox regression models addressed time to recurrence and cancer-specific mortality after RC., Results: 1,741 (43.8%) patients had concomitant CIS in their RC specimens. Concomitant CIS was more common in organ-confined UCB and was associated with lymphovascular invasion (p < 0.001). Concomitant CIS was not associated with either disease recurrence or cancer-specific death regardless of pathologic stage. The presence of concomitant CIS did not improve the predictive accuracy of standard predictors for either disease recurrence or cancer-specific death in any of the subgroups., Conclusions: We could not confirm the prognostic value of concomitant CIS in RC specimens. This, together with the discrepancy between pathologists in determining the presence of concomitant CIS at the morphologic level, limits the clinical utility of concomitant CIS in RC specimens for clinical decision-making., (Copyright © 2011 S.
