Abstract

This essay examines how Stanisław Lem mobilizes the genre of science fiction to portray regional Central European concerns as structural conditions of semiperiphery. The essay centers on Lem's interest in illegibility, which defines him as a novelist and a critic, showing how his argument against the US monopoly within the genre of science fiction is reflected in his novels. Focusing on Lem's paralleling of female masochism and epistemological critique, the essay reads Solaris as a novel invested in inspecting the interrelatedness of systems of oppression. The article examines concepts of gender in relation to sadism and masochism, with reference to texts produced in the interwar period in Europe. It explores how male and female sexual identities were studied and what sexual behaviors were viewed as normal. It notes that the masochistic woman was still considered normal in her basic orientation. Abstract

The article reports that the police, courts and security services should be banned from using brain-imaging technology. That was one of 37 recommendations about the future of the brain sciences that came out of the "Meeting of Minds European Citizens' Deliberation", the biggest ever public science consultation exercise, which reported to the European Parliament. Other recommendations were to improve communication between ordinary citizens and brain researchers, boost funding for the field and ensure adequate care for the growing number of people suffering mental or brain disorders.
