Historic concrete buildings are at risk. Limited knowledge of concrete technology until the 1960s led to more sensitive buildings than modern concrete buildings. In addition, the lack of sensibility regarding their heritage value and insufficient protection is leading to remorseless demolition. Still, concrete has proved to be a resilient material that can last over a century with proper care. There is not yet an estimation of the status of historic concrete buildings in Europe. Until now, a few attempts have been done to secondarily, and subjectively, gauge their conservation status. This paper is the result of a joint investigation studying forty-eight historic concrete buildings distributed in four countries. They were surveyed by expert teams according to a predefined methodology. The study aims to identify recurrent damages and parameters affecting the conservation state. It also aims to serve as the first trial for an objective and measurable methodology, to apply it with a statistically significant number of cases. Damages related to the corrosion of reinforcement and moisture-related processes were the most recurrent. The use of plasters, flat roofs, and structural façade walls show a positive effect in protecting the concrete. The state of conservation has a great variability across countries. . Nonacog alfa, a recombinant factor IX (FIX) used for the treatment of haemophilia B, was approved in Europe in 1998. In accordance with European Medicines Agency requirements, a registry study was conducted from 2002 to 2009. A reformulated iso-osmotic version was approved for European use in 2007. This study was conducted to evaluate the safety of nonacog alfa in a usual care setting, and provide clinical trial and postmarketing surveillance data support. This open-label, non-interventional, prospective observational cohort study (registry) comprised 52 sites in nine European countries. Patients with haemophilia B receiving nonacog alfa in either formulation for prevention or treatment were followed on a usual care schedule. A total of 218 patients were enrolled, of whom 66 (30.3%) were <18 years of age. Haemophilia severity was evenly distributed, with baseline FIX activity of <1%, 1-5% and >5% in 33.3%, 36.6% and 30.1% of patients, respectively. One hundred thirty-eight patients received the original formulation alone; 80 switched to or received only the new formulation. There was a low incidence of events of special interest (ESIs), with less-than-expected therapeutic effect in five patients (2.2%), inhibitor development in two (0.9%), thrombosis in one (0.5%) and allergic events in eight (3.7%). These accounted for the majority of the 15 serious AEs reported in six patients. Six patients discontinued because of AEs, primarily related to hypersensitivity. KOGENATE® Bayer (rFVIII-FS) with Bio-Set® is designed to prevent patient contact with exposed needles during recombinant factor VIII reconstitution. This postmarketing surveillance study evaluated patient satisfaction before and after switching to the new Bio-Set reconstitution method. Male children and adults with haemophilia A were enrolled from nine European countries. A preference questionnaire was administered to patients after Bio-Set training and at the end of the observation period (≥20 exposure days or 3 months). Physician assessments of patient compliance and satisfaction were conducted at the end of the observation period. Patients ( N = 306) received a mean ± SD of 28 ± 23 infusions of rFVIII-FS with Bio-Set. A majority of patients (82%) preferred the Bio-Set method, with domain scores for ease of use, safety from needlesticks, and speed of reconstitution being highest after training and at the end of the observation period. The Bio-Set method received higher mean scores than previous reconstitution methods for worry/safety and ease/confidence domains at both time points. Physician-reported patient compliance with the Bio-Set method was similar or greater compared with the previous method for 94% of the patients, with physicians reporting that 92% of the patients were satisfied or very satisfied with Bio-Set. Thirteen adverse events (AEs) occurred in nine patients, and five serious AEs occurred in five patients; none was related to rFVIII-FS. No de novo or recurrent inhibitor development was observed during the observation period. rFVIII-FS with Bio-Set was well tolerated and well accepted by haemophilia A patients, which may improve treatment compliance. The possibility to detect thermal neutrons with single gap resistive plate chambers (RPCs) has been investigated. The development of the detector has been performed in the frame of the detection and imaging of antipersonnel land-mine by neutron back-scattering (DIAMINE) European Project for humanitarian de-mining. The RPCs are simple devices widely used in many particles physics experiments as trigger detectors because of their fast response and good spatial resolution. The RPC detects the charged particles generated by neutrons via the (n,α) reaction on boron. A 10B4C thin coating on the inner surface of one RPC electrode is used as thermal neutron converter. A simulation study has been performed to optimize the converter thickness and the RPC working parameters. Tests on converter samples have been performed with a thermalized 252Cf source in order to evaluate the conversion efficiency. A first detector prototype has been realized and tested with cosmic rays and thermal neutrons. Results of simulation and experimental measurements of conversion efficiency, together with the description of the RPC prototype, are presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The renovation of existing residential buildings across Europe has become a key factor for energy saving and the improvement of Indoor Environment Quality (IEQ). This paper presents an investigation of IEQ for a typical 1960s single-family house in Germany before and after a new retrofitting strategy (prefabricated element with integrated ventilation and new thermal envelope). In-situ measurements were applied to investigate the energy efficiency and IEQ improvement for the new retrofitting strategy in temperate winter regions of Europe. The simulation model replicates the measured data to be closer to reality and simulates a home office (COVID-19) scenario. The in-situ measurements showed that our retrofitting strategy increases the indoor air temperature during the heating period by up to 2.5 °C, decreases relative humidity by up to 3.8% and increases CO 2 by up to 24 ppm than before. As the simulation results shows, the retrofitted home office scenario allows a reduction in heating energy of up to 77%, an increase in CO 2 concentration of up to 41.8 ppm, 0.5% less relative humidity and 1.6 °C higher indoor air temperature than that without retrofitting. Within the framework of the EURADOS Working Group 11, a comparison of passive neutron dosemeters in high-energy neutron fields was organised in 2011. The aim of the exercise was to evaluate the response of poly-allyl-glycol-carbonate neutron dosemeters from various European dosimetry laboratories to high-energy neutron fields.
