The growing rate of electricity generation from renewables is leading to new operational and management issues on the power grid because the electricity generated exceeds local requirements and the transportation or storage capacities are inadequate. An interesting option that is under investigation by several years is the opportunity to use the renewable electricity surplus to power electrolyzers that split water into its component parts, with the hydrogen being directly injected into natural gas pipelines for both storage and transportation. This innovative approach merges together the concepts of (i) renewable power-to-hydrogen (P2H) and of (ii) hydrogen blending into natural gas networks. The combination of renewable P2H and hydrogen blending into natural gas networks has a huge potential in terms of environmental and social benefits, but it is still facing several barriers that are technological, economic, legislative. In the framework of the new hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe, Member States should design a roadmap moving towards a hydrogen ecosystem by 2050. The blending of "green hydrogen", that is hydrogen produced by renewable sources, in the natural gas network at a limited percentage is a key element to enable hydrogen production in a preliminary and transitional phase. Therefore, it is urgent to evaluate at the same time (i) the potential of green hydrogen blending at low percentage (up to 10%) and (ii) the maximum P2H capacity compatible with low percentage blending. The paper aims to preliminary assess the green hydrogen blending potential into the Italian natural gas network as a tool for policy makers, grid and networks managers and energy planners. A transition to a low carbon energy system is needed to respond to global challenge of climate change mitigation. Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) is a technology with worldwide potential to provide sustainable space heating and cooling by (seasonal) storage and recovery of heat in the subsurface. However, adoption of ATES varies strongly across Europe, because of both technical as well as organizational barriers, e.g. differences in climatic and subsurface conditions and legislation respectively. After identification of all these barriers in a Climate-KIC research project, six ATES pilot systems have been installed in five different EU-countries aiming to show how such barriers can be overcome. This paper presents the results of the barrier analysis and the results of the pilot plants. The barriers are categorized in general barriers, and barriers for mature and immature markets. Two pilots show how ATES can be successfully used to re-develop contaminated sites by combining ATES with soil remediation. Two other pilots show the added value of ATES because its storage capacity enables the utilization of solar heat in combination with solar power production. Finally, two pilots are realized in countries with legal barriers where ATES systems have not previously been applied at all. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP) is a rare, incurable, vision-threatening, genetic disease. In this study, we aimed to reveal the real-world burden of this disease from the viewpoint of retina specialists and geneticists involved directly in XLRP care and to identify unique insights that may not otherwise be available through typical clinical studies or health economic research., Methods: In this exploratory, cross-sectional study (EXPLORE XLRP-1), retina specialists (n = 20) and geneticists (n = 5) in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK provided anonymized insights on their experiences managing patients with XLRP (n = 80) via an online survey and 60-min telephone interview., Results: Survey respondents reported that patient independence decreased over time, where 37% of patients were considered "completely autonomous" at diagnosis versus 23% at the last consultation. At their last visit, 45% of patients were active in the workforce; 67% (12/18) of "completely autonomous" patients had active working status compared with 13% (1/8) of "completely dependent" patients. The average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis was 4 years and varied among countries. In 78% of patients, XLRP was confirmed by genetic testing, the rate of which varied among countries (range, 50-94%), taking up to 6 months to receive results. Specialists identified unmet needs in XLRP management including more standardized assessments of quality of life (QoL) as well as easier and earlier access to specialists, genetic testing, patient support programs, and effective treatment options., Conclusions: The diagnosis, genetic testing, and management pathways among patients with XLRP can vary considerably.
