The article presents a study of the use of large-particle-size talc in the treatment of malignant pleural effusion. The use of talc has been associated by acute respiratory distress syndrome in a percentage of patients so treated. A multicenter, open-label, prospective cohort study of patients with malignant pleural effusion who were treated by thoracoscopy and talc poudrage was conducted in hospitals in South Africa and Europe. The study concluded that large-particle talc was safe for treatment of malignant pleural effusion and did not result in respiratory distress syndrome.
